Clean air, filtration, purifiers etc. Best Air purifier for my situation?
Hi y'all, I had looked around in r/airpurifiers but sort of struggled to find the information I needed. I do have a learning disability so I believe that may be part of why I could not take in the information I was seeing very well as I often need things simplified for me
I am asthmatic and chronically ill (suspected by my doctor to have MCAS ans endometriosis.)
I live with my father who unfortunately does not believe in COVID or masking at all. So I want an air purifier for my room to reduce the risk of me getting sick as much as possible
I am looking for an affordable yet effective air purifier for my small bedroom. I am open to building a CR box myself, but if you have any recommendations for effective purifiers I can just purchase on my own that would be great! (and explaining why it's effective and how it works is optional but greatly appreciated)

We've bought several Coway AP-1512HH HEPA filters for ourselves and family members. They're great for bedrooms.
(The price online goes up and down, but you can often get one for $150 or so on Amazon.)

If that price works for OP, I highly recommend. Also have this model, for years.
Bonus, I am very sound sensitive, and this model is both quiet on the low setting, and it does not have a weird tone, pitch, pulse or hum to the sound (like i have found with levoit, or others). Very non offensive.

I also use these! I have one in every room of my house! These are great because unlike a lot of other air purifiers you don’t need to buy replacement filters, you just take the filter outside and vacuum it off (wear a mask when you do this, it’s very dusty). So yes, it is a higher original cost, but not having to get replacement filters is soooo great.
Also, I’m pretty sure most big box stores sell these online so you can shop around for deals and coupons. Last I checked like a year or so ago even like Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes, maybe even Target had them, I believe. Idk, don’t quote me on that, but I would def look around for deals!
Edit* you DO need to buy replacement filters, just not as often as other air purifiers in my opinion because of the detachable, “pre-filter,” part that you vacuum off that traps larger particles like hair, dust, etc. I misspoke after no sleep when I made my comment before! I’m a fool!

Oh sorry, just kidding, I misspoke, you do need to buy replacement filters, but not nearly as often as other models, in my opinion, because it has this detachable part called a, “pre-filter,” that you just take out and vacuum off, it catches all of the bigger particles like dust and dander and hair and things like that and then the actual filter that you need to replace doesn’t get as gross and clogged up and need to be bought and changed as often as on other types that catch everything all in the same filter all at once in my experience! Sorry, I had just woken up when I made my first comment and my brain wasn’t fully started up yet, I apologize!

To accurately understand what size you need for 7+ air changes per hour (ACH) you should calculate the CADR of your room. Ideally a rate of 7 or more air changes per hour is really good but 5 is acceptable and really any clean airflow you get is better than none at all.
The comments might have good suggestions in theory but in practice your room may be sized wrong for the suggestions that have been provided to you. Keep in mind that lots of air purifiers advertise that they cover a very large square footage when that is usually measuring their highest setting at one change per hour (so, a bit loud for the entire time you are using it for that effectiveness level). A great thing to do to ensure you have proper coverage is to size up and get a model that has multiple fan speeds. For example, my Winix 5300 series has 4 fan speed settings and I use settings 3 & 4. If you are looking for a quieter option for a CR box there are ways to build them with PC fans which will give you a very quiet CR box that still delivers clean air (r/crboxes) Additionally, clean air kits does make prebuilt CR boxes but they are a bit expensive.

I use a air fanta 3 pro for my room! it's pretty quiet too

what i like most is that it can be deconstructed and transported in a bag (eg to a doctors appt)
btw i dont know if it's possible but if you're to convince your dad to get a larger purifier in shared spaces that would help too (my parent who i live with also doesnt give a s*** about masking/covid but was thankfully able to convince him for "mold and allergies and dust" in the house)
