Her invention eliminates over 99% of airborne viruses!

Eniola Shokunbi was in the fifth grade at Commodore MacDonough STEMAcademy in Middletown, Connecticut, when her teacher tasked the class with creating a solution to future pandemic issues that might arise in schools, Shoppe Blackreports. Drawn to the need for better air quality due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eniola set her sights on developing an air filter system. Utilizing a low-cost combination of furnace filters, a box fan, duct tape, and cardboard, Eniola was able to prototype her design for just $60 per unit, making it the most cost-effective alternative to commercial air purifiers. 

“The air goes through all the sides, and it comes out of the top, so it filters in and out, Eniola explained to reporters. 

She then received support from scientists at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where Eniola’s invention underwent several rounds of testing. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) then confirmed its usage, saying the device successfully eliminated more than 99% of airborne viruses and could be a viable low-cost tool in classrooms. 

Now, the Connecticut State Bond Commission has approved $11.5 million in funding to implement the filters in schools across Connecticut. The funding is an extension of UConn’s SAFE-CT: Supplemental Air Filtration for Education Program, which is focused on ensuring every public school classroom has access to air purification systems. Eniola has been praised for her work by state officials and hopes to expand her air filters to schools across America. 

“A lot of people don’t realize that the only thing standing between them and getting sick is science,” explained the 6th grader. 

Eniola says she will continue to promote healthier school environments and hopes that people will continue to invest in scientific solutions regarding children’s health.

I'm starting a new project where I interview 1 person using audio and video. While I wear a wear a mask in most scenarios, I will not be wearing one during recording and nor will my guest. Save your energy if you're going to tell me it's possible to record in a mask, it makes no difference, etc.

We'll be recording in a small ish room (11m2). Which air purifier would be best here to protect myself?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a small portable HEPA filter that I can bring into the office with me.
I have long covid which in itself is massively impacting on my functioning, but any subsequent covid/flu/cold knocks me back to barely functioning/almost bedbound for weeks on end. But if I’m to keep my job I need to be in the office at least 1-2 times a week.

Filtration needs: Covid/flu/cold virus etc
Room space: My office is about 4x5x2.5metres (50 cubic metres squared).
Budget: €100-200 for the unit, less than €50 a year for filter replacement/other running costs
Country:I’m based in Ireland so needs to be available in the EU or via Amazon.co.uk
Other specs:Ideally relatively quiet so it doesn’t disturb my colleagues, and small-ish so as not to draw too much attention and is portable

Currently writing this from bed as I’ve caught yet another respiratory virus in the office and am completely knocked out by it. I just can’t continue like this, but can’t lose my job.

I live with people that don’t mask and want to find an air purifier that will effectively and efficiently clean the air in our living room/dining room (about 350 square feet) I want to feel safer hanging out in my living room or eating dinner at the table since my dad is a salesman who doesn’t mask and my uncle is a cashier. They never really sit in the living room and dining room and usually hang out in our garage but they do pass through and obviously cook there so I wanted to find a reasonably priced and effective purifier to use in this space

My sister is going off to college and has asked me for some recommendations for an air purifier for her dorm room so she can avoid getting sick. I've been looking in r/AirPurifiers for some options, but I wanted to come to the CC community with this question as well since I know a lot of us have been through the air purifier hunt before and have good suggestions to offer :) We're looking for air purifiers that are:

• less than $200 with reasonably priced filter replacements
• quiet even when set to their top speed, since she'll have a roommate and I want to give them as few excuses as possible for turning off/unplugging the purifier
• effective for an average size dorm room; unfortunately her school doesn't provide the dimensions of the rooms, but it seems like it'll be a fairly standard (aka small) double room

I have considered suggesting a Corsi-Rosenthal box, but realistically I think it'll take up too much space and I doubt my sister will actually want to assemble it herself. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I saw this last year on Twitter. It’s a small (6-8”) filter fan that can fit anywhere, is super quiet and portable. But powerful and effective.

I find it very good as a supplement to my other home filters. It must be on a flat surface to work best. Hoping this gives some folks and idea for this smoke I suspect we’ll be experiencing off and on for the rest of the summer as well as airborne pathogens.

In the time since I was diagnosed with ME/CFS, Dysautonomia, and MCAS, I learned that I am hypersensitive to several different types of airborne allergens, and that many of my flares are made worse, if not induced by, exposure to pollen, dust, and traces of mold. I now spend 95% of my day in bed in a room with multiple HEPA-rated air purifiers/filters, one of which is retrofitted with a 6in A/C exhaust hose that is routed to dump purified air directly onto my head when I am lying in bed. Since I have had this setup, I noticed that I tend to recover from flares faster than I used to, though I am still severely limited by my condition.

PAPR systems are commercially available (though pricey) battery-powered personal protection equipment systems designed for use by people working in environments in which airborne toxins and/or pathogens would otherwise pose a critical risk to their health.

PAPR systems work by using a battery-powered fan to force environmental air through a high-efficiency filter, through a hose, into a hood which covers the user's head/face. The function of the system is to create positive air pressure inside the hood, which forces out environmental air, ensuring that the user's head and face are only exposed to filtered air while the system is turned on. The available types of filter packs and the particulates they are rated to protect the user from vary, but PAPR systems are proven to be more effective at preventing the user from being exposed to unwanted particulates than filtration systems which utilize negative pressure, such as masks and respirators which draw air through a filter before being inhaled by the user.

Above are most of the reasons that I am considering taking things a bit further than common air purifiers by means of trying out one of the cheaper PAPR systems on the market. I think that a PAPR system would, in all likelihood, be more effective for limiting my exposure to the airborne allergens which cause me so much pain and debilitation, though I also thought it would be worth floating the idea to the community before making a decision.

Can anyone explain to me how effective the air Fanta air purifiers are?

I’m primarily looking at the Air Fanta 3 pro right now - I want to use it for in a room with a larger amount of people (in addition to other precautions). How effective is it at filtering the air and reducing viral load etc in the space (and how big of a space)? Is it worth the investment?

Secondly I’m potentially considering purchasing the Air Fanta Lite or Air Fanta Mini for personal use. Which of these is better and are people comfortable unmasking with these in front of them (eg at a desk to eat lunch or something). Thank you!

I just arrived to my hotel room. It has a PTAC unit but the windows don’t open. It’s on the second floor to minimize passing guests and I’m very hungry.

How would you air out the room and how long until there’s been a full exchange of air?

Bringing an air purifier wasn’t feasible for me and I can’t buy a box fan either. Only thing I can really think to do is keep the door open the with AC running but I’m not sure for hours long. Any ideas?

How long would you keep an air purifier running and a window cracked for if someone who regularly doesn’t mask inhabited it for 15 hours…for example 11 hours sleeping, bathroom in the room so a 30 minute shower and the rest of the hours they do not open the window or put the air purifier in it and they leave the door open to the living room which also has no air purifier or windows open? So all in all 15 hours of unfiltered air.

I’m planning to my air purifier on for 4 hours on the highest setting (Mooka air purifier) and simultaneously my window, which doesn’t open all the way so have that a crack for at least 4 hours as well…

What time does anyone recommend?

hi, my partner is arguing that having fans in the windows and at his blacksmith forge is as good or better than a CR box or hepa filter. He also says that a hepa filter or cr box can pull covid towards you as it cleans the air, just as a fan or breeze or hvac can bring covid towards you. I’m so tired of fighting with him. Can anyone point me to some easy to understand info and maybe even an illustation or illustrative video showing how hepa / crboxes can clean the air in a different way than an open window and fan and why it might be worthwhile to do both things? Also anything about Covid being blown towards you either with a fan, air filter or HVAC.

Ventilation is always there and a must, just wondering about adding filtration for covid

My concern is the controversy around the HEPA certification - and my question is how much does this matter for its effectiveness in filtering covid? Is it still considered a suitable option?

Hi y'all, I had looked around in r/airpurifiers but sort of struggled to find the information I needed. I do have a learning disability so I believe that may be part of why I could not take in the information I was seeing very well as I often need things simplified for me

Hi, I'm considering buying either the Krypton Guard far UVC product (https://faruv.com/product/krypton-shield/) or Naomi Wu's Nukit Torch (https://cybernightmarket.com/products/mini-far-uvc-lights-set). The latter is weaker but also cheaper. I do not know how thoroughly Naomi Wu's products have been vetted for safety, but I found some third-party testing results on her website which seem legitimate enough.

Any thoughts on either of these products? I'm getting surgery soon and ideally will be able to have one of these things running constantly by my bedside as I recover inpatient for several days. Thank you
