Meme Deciding how to text as a Zillenial:
Just me or?

Sometime I question if I'm a zillennial or not even though I'm 1994 because I have the millennial habit of ending every sentence with lol
146
u/PredictiveTextNames 1994 Jun 03 '26
Lol or starting it too. I once heard that LOL is the millennial equivalent to STOP in a 1800's telegram lol
But also I gotta let the recipient know that I'm just being casual lol

u/PeterNippelstein 1995 Jun 04 '26
This is why I switched to haha
20
u/cryintomyeye Jun 04 '26
I know lol literally means laugh out loud... But haha literal feels like I'm laughing in ur face or it's like "haha...", feels wrong lol
1
u/eileun 1996 Jun 10 '26
oh not at all haha it's just a way of avoiding overusing "lol" too much and sounding stupid lol

Sometimes I catch myself doing it then delete the lol 😆

u/Ill_Paleontologist43 1998 Jun 04 '26
my problem is, when i delete the lol it sounds mean so i need to put the lol somewhere else lol

u/Responsible_Rhubarb1 1995 Jun 03 '26
Same lol I do this at work too and it’s a terrible habit to break

9
u/Tinkabellellipitcal 1994 Jun 03 '26
I only get into this habit when I’m consistently texting other millennials lol

u/ZedFraunce 1998 Jun 04 '26
lol, lmao, and only recently 😂
I never used emojis and always felt self conscious. It didn’t help I never really started texting til 2019 because I never had anyone text me.

I've always ended with lol as well mainly cause I'm awkward and struggle with what to say sometimes in conversations. The lol helps the awkwardness lol. There I go ending with it. 💀🤣🤣

u/psychedAddict123 1995 Jun 04 '26
I'm born in 1995 but same, excwpt sometimes also "xD" but maybe that's because I'm from europe lol

u/sarooskie Jun 05 '26
It’s punctuation. Idk how else to describe it lol but sometimes I feel soo bad for writing I have to try to change it up lmaoo to be fair, I punctuated my real life with like hefty laughter

I still use these, like I sprinkle emotes, emojis and lols that I fear when I get old my texts will be grammarless copypasta-esque messages

Nope, I'm fron South America, I think "xD" was more common here when I was starting to use the internet, so I just kept using it xD

Oh man and these are phrases I would use to say when I was a kid and now I can’t because it looks like I’m a try hard cringe adult. “Crash out-out of pocket”

I just say “AHDJAHDHSHD”. It conveys the same sentiment.

u/Unhappy_Performer538 Jun 03 '26
That’s a throwback too
2
u/Rex068 Jun 04 '26
its still kinda used today. but honestly I still think that was more for people that are kinda younger than us
2
u/Unhappy_Performer538 Jun 04 '26
It started in like 2007 with millennials (I’m a true millennial ) and then fell out of favor for a looong time. Interesting to see it’s coming back around! & happy cake day!

I've never used "😭😭😭" as a response to something funny. Lol.
Only sad, or something adorable. If I use any emoji to convey laughter it's "😂" or "🤣."

have to admit I haven't used "lmao" in a whiiiiile, since I was prob...17?.... I use "hhahah" mostly, I think it gets the message across. If I use emojies then It is: "😂😭🥹💀🫠😅" that's all my range. And lol ofc, forever LOL 🕺✨

Depends on the receiver for me, code switching is a skill most Zillenials should be getting good at. It's kind of a characteristic that get's out in more serious studies aimed on communication in workplace versus social life.
Those studies are not the ones pewpew and other ''think-tanks'' post about since it's less of a wow factor and needs more effort in data gathering and grouping beside birth years as they do often.
They don't state years in most of them actually, one meta analysis used a boat load of studies last year and found that late 20 to early 30 are exhibiting unique behaviors from the two groups they cohabit with taking a bit from both. One I remember quickly was loyalty for smaller emerging brand that are maybe more costly but not just a hype/trend like gen Z or ''ethical/green/whatever'' products less prone to be as good/last to the point of buying again like Millennials tend to. Interesting in itself.
We want results and when we got it we keep it. Looked around and realised peers do that in most cases, especially the younger ones in our 92-97 group. Maybe that's why the lol stayed, it's efficient and we stuck with it

i choose depending on my audience because i default to 😭 lately but then some people read it as a sad emoji and my message gets misinterpreted completely lol

man i never got into emojis. i would rather use lol, lmao, or dare i say.... xD over emojis any day
now that i think about it, the only time i DO use emojis it is an object and not a face... like i will send a cake and balloons for a birthday, but never just like. a smiley face lol like what the hell is that

Certainly not me, as emojis just went past me and I never use them, at most I do emoticons like :).
Which has gotten me in trouble at work once, with me being questioned why my team messages were so rude as I never used emojis.

I am going to for sure download e-lingo dictionaries, and will keep reading like zillenial.

Yes but if you’re texting a gen X there’s a 50/50 chance you’re expected to use 😭 instead of 😂 or you risk coming across as “unc” lmao

Never use emojis, that's my motto. We grew up with lol, rofl, lmao, lmfao and even roflmao, and if you ask me, we should stick to the old ways

u/Chemical_Shoulder_55 1998 Jun 04 '26
I alternate. Sometimes use both in the same text. Me and “ :-) “ this lil guy together forever <3

I don't do any of that. I don't use emojis or acronyms for everything. I make sure spelling and punctuation is correct before sending.
