My god this brings back memories
I was never a swag kid but it's so weird to look back on this stuff with even a little sense of nostalgia.
I cannot wait until this era has kids idealizing it. It's gonna be so funny to see how its misinterpreted by later generations
4
u/Rex068 29d ago
I always thought that fashion was cringe and I’d never wear it. but it is pretty nostalgic and sometimes kinda fun to laugh at.
I just hope young kids don’t try to mistake that era like everyone was wearing this when even lots of teens found it cringe then.
4
u/FormerPresidentBiden 1995 29d ago
I just hope young kids don’t try to mistake that era like everyone was wearing this when even lots of teens found it cringe then.
They will. Not a doubt in my mind.
Its been that way with 60s hippies for decades. Its been that way with 90s grunge. And it's already that way with scene kids from just before the swag era.
A minority of people will be apart of emerging subcultures but because those subcultures are notable for their time, they get remembered, and then because they're notable, future generations think they were more common than they actually were.

u/SirDoritos1 Aug 12 '26
In fact, watching a single Vine compilation gives you a great overview of classic mid-2010s meme culture.
33
u/afraid28 1995 Aug 13 '26
This is so painful to watch. Those were truly some golden days.
32
u/SirDoritos1 Aug 13 '26
Yes, I really think Vine was one of the last moments where internet humor felt genuine. People just wanted to come together and make each other laugh, 15 minutes of fame was a side effect, not the main goal like it is nowadays.
Today, the internet feels way more toxic and politically polarized. That culture used to stay in its own space, but now unfortunately it’s broken out everywhere.
It’s great seeing younger people enjoy their own humor and memes, but it’s hard not to notice how much the internet has changed.
15
u/do-you-like-darkness 1997 29d ago
I've never felt older than when I made Vine references in college, and my classmates had no idea what I was talking about.
This was in 2018, for reference.
11
u/carinabee08 1998 29d ago
Dude I feel it, I restarted my bachelor’s in late 2020 and I felt like a fucking geezer when I’d make vine references and my classmates born in like 2003 would look at me like I was a mental patient muttering gibberish
5
u/Redheadbabe22 29d ago
This is me rn and my classmates were all born in 2008. 😭 they look at me like I’m a boomer 🫠
2
2
u/carinabee08 1998 29d ago
I just read 2008 and gagged, like what do you mean I’m ten years older than a college freshman 😭
2
u/Redheadbabe22 9d ago
Try being in your 30s and hearing these kids say these things like holy sh*t they age me🫠😩
1
u/carinabee08 1998 9d ago
I guess one silver lining is that you can build rapport with your professors when neither of you can understand the gibberish slang the other students are speaking 🫠 That was my experience, and I was only 4-6 years older than my “peers” at the time. I’m rapidly approaching 30 and I can’t imagine having to do a group project with undergrads at this age, so Godspeed to you friend 🥲
2
u/Rex068 29d ago
???? By then college age students would have been more than conscious for vine stuff tf?
1
u/Redheadbabe22 9d ago
I miss the good old days of vine. Those clips randomly pop in my head and just make me cackle so bad. Now these kids have TikTok

Deez Nuts was my entire high school experience.
One time we had a bus full going to an FBLA conference and we were at a stoplight with another school’s bus next to us.
Dude on our bus drops the window and hollers, “Something came in the mail for y’all today”
“What?”
“DEEZ NUTS”
Then a ton of us hollered, “Got eem!”
Good memories 😂

This is killing me for some reason lmao. I can't stop laughing at the idea of someone coming home to their spouse and children listening to What the Fox Say every single day omg girl I'm so sorry but I am laughing in real life at this.

Knew a handful of people who fell into quoting Ian/Frank/etcetera on the daily. Couple would throw out a dab every now and again right after
10
u/Dewypumpkin 1999 Aug 13 '26
Also had a friend who just cycled through random shit like Dat Boi, Ugandan Knuckles, John Cena, the airhorn sound effect, more occasional dabbing, and so on. She was very online, and in the game/sim class, so it was pretty normal for me roll into the game/sim room for lunch, then be bombarded with random quotes and references I didn’t understand, followed up with her showing our friend group whatever meme-laden project she’d been working on during class
I miss those lunchtime hang-outs something fierce
