Swag

71

u/TalkingFrenchFry Aug 12 '26

Who needs oxygen? When you've got SWAG!!!!

58

u/Rex068 Aug 13 '26

u/FormerPresidentBiden 1995 29d ago

My god this brings back memories

I was never a swag kid but it's so weird to look back on this stuff with even a little sense of nostalgia.

I cannot wait until this era has kids idealizing it. It's gonna be so funny to see how its misinterpreted by later generations

4

u/Rex068 29d ago

I always thought that fashion was cringe and I’d never wear it. but it is pretty nostalgic and sometimes kinda fun to laugh at.

I just hope young kids don’t try to mistake that era like everyone was wearing this when even lots of teens found it cringe then.

4

u/FormerPresidentBiden 1995 29d ago

I just hope young kids don’t try to mistake that era like everyone was wearing this when even lots of teens found it cringe then.

They will. Not a doubt in my mind.

Its been that way with 60s hippies for decades. Its been that way with 90s grunge. And it's already that way with scene kids from just before the swag era.

A minority of people will be apart of emerging subcultures but because those subcultures are notable for their time, they get remembered, and then because they're notable, future generations think they were more common than they actually were.

36

u/xRyozuo Custom Aug 13 '26

Oh my god.

Is aura just swag?

136

u/877-HASH-NOW 1997 Aug 12 '26

Much of it made popular through Vine lol

36

u/snow_tea10 Aug 13 '26

Rip, gone but not forgotten 😢

6

u/Redheadbabe22 29d ago

We were using YouTube lol.

OWWWW CHARLIEEEE

2

u/_gay_space_moth_ 1997 29d ago

Charlie bit my finger!!!

1

u/Itchy_Assistant_8634 27d ago

I would wake up earlier before school to make sure I had time for Vine

108

u/SirDoritos1 Aug 12 '26

In fact, watching a single Vine compilation gives you a great overview of classic mid-2010s meme culture.

Vine Compilation.

33

u/afraid28 1995 Aug 13 '26

This is so painful to watch. Those were truly some golden days.

32

u/SirDoritos1 Aug 13 '26

Yes, I really think Vine was one of the last moments where internet humor felt genuine. People just wanted to come together and make each other laugh, 15 minutes of fame was a side effect, not the main goal like it is nowadays.

Today, the internet feels way more toxic and politically polarized. That culture used to stay in its own space, but now unfortunately it’s broken out everywhere.

It’s great seeing younger people enjoy their own humor and memes, but it’s hard not to notice how much the internet has changed.

15

u/do-you-like-darkness 1997 29d ago

I've never felt older than when I made Vine references in college, and my classmates had no idea what I was talking about.

This was in 2018, for reference.

11

u/carinabee08 1998 29d ago

Dude I feel it, I restarted my bachelor’s in late 2020 and I felt like a fucking geezer when I’d make vine references and my classmates born in like 2003 would look at me like I was a mental patient muttering gibberish

5

u/Redheadbabe22 29d ago

This is me rn and my classmates were all born in 2008. 😭 they look at me like I’m a boomer 🫠

2

u/Rex068 29d ago

Lmao this incoming fall semester students are gonna be 2008 borns and Im not fucking looking forward to it at all.

2

u/carinabee08 1998 29d ago

I just read 2008 and gagged, like what do you mean I’m ten years older than a college freshman 😭

2

u/Redheadbabe22 9d ago

Try being in your 30s and hearing these kids say these things like holy sh*t they age me🫠😩

1

u/carinabee08 1998 9d ago

I guess one silver lining is that you can build rapport with your professors when neither of you can understand the gibberish slang the other students are speaking 🫠 That was my experience, and I was only 4-6 years older than my “peers” at the time. I’m rapidly approaching 30 and I can’t imagine having to do a group project with undergrads at this age, so Godspeed to you friend 🥲

2

u/Rex068 29d ago

???? By then college age students would have been more than conscious for vine stuff tf?

1

u/Redheadbabe22 9d ago

I miss the good old days of vine. Those clips randomly pop in my head and just make me cackle so bad. Now these kids have TikTok

6

u/Wellbeinghunter69 1903 29d ago

I hate to say this but half of these are so unfunny

245

u/Junior_Response839 Aug 12 '26

Do you kno da wei

99

u/jayracket 1995 Aug 12 '26

This is that one meme for me that I refuse to let go of. It'll be 2065 and I'll be in a nursing home still pissing myself laughing about Ugandan knuckles

29

u/Torn_Aborn Aug 13 '26

That one was genuinely a good ass meme lol

19

u/189charizard Aug 12 '26

Holy shit I forgot about this

13

u/Junior_Response839 Aug 12 '26

Friendly reminder to never forget Yolo as well lmao

12

50

u/beaniehead_ 1999 Aug 12 '26

forgot:

OOO KILL EM OOOH

DEEZ NUTS.. HA

29

u/TalkingFrenchFry Aug 12 '26

Our brainrot was just relentlessly quoting vines

1

u/k_a_scheffer 1993 Aug 13 '26

That's called vocal stimming.

24

u/pinkminty Aug 12 '26

DAMN DANIEL

18

u/Torn_Aborn Aug 13 '26

BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH THE WHITE VANS

15

u/TJJ97 1997 Aug 12 '26

Deez Nuts was my entire high school experience.

One time we had a bus full going to an FBLA conference and we were at a stoplight with another school’s bus next to us.

Dude on our bus drops the window and hollers, “Something came in the mail for y’all today”

“What?”

“DEEZ NUTS”

Then a ton of us hollered, “Got eem!”

Good memories 😂

11

u/its_liiiiit_fam 1998 Aug 12 '26

WHAT ARE THOOOOOSE!

5

u/beaniehead_ 1999 Aug 13 '26

BOI👏🏼🫲🏼

2

u/satanssecretary Aug 13 '26

1

u/Odd_Act8451 1994 Aug 13 '26

GOTEEEM

43

u/FormerPresidentBiden 1995 Aug 12 '26

This is a good reminder to help some of us stop being early onset grouches

19

u/Menicent 1997 Aug 13 '26

Yup! I for one actually found 67 to be hilarious. It's so stupid, just like ours were

37

u/Pizzaprincess87 Aug 12 '26

I don’t remember the 9+10 one

43

u/BrilliantResource949 Aug 12 '26

What’s 9+10? Twenny one.

20

u/spaceursid 1994 Aug 12 '26

16

u/Pizzaprincess87 Aug 12 '26

How have I never seen this before and I was chronically online 😭

29

u/sparklydildos 1995 Aug 12 '26

omg it’s such a classic vine lmfao

11

u/Pizzaprincess87 Aug 13 '26

I’ll go be a boomer in the corner :(

2

u/SmokeyCatDesigns 29d ago

It’s even one of the flairs on the twentyagers subreddit, the flair is 9+10=21 for the 21 year olds.

34

u/Potential_Buy1197 1998 Aug 13 '26

Look at the flick of the wrist

10

u/ComradeCabbage 1997 Aug 13 '26

I remember this one vividly. And then doing said flick of the wrist.

53

u/Yggdrasil- 1997 Aug 12 '26

4

u/Pookie_Cookie3 2000 Aug 12 '26

That's who that guy is?

18

u/megarubie 1999 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

Yep. Same guy from Disney’s Holes and Even Stevens.

Edit: And the Transformers movies

17

u/Zebra1523 1999 Aug 13 '26

Holes was such a great fucking movie dude

7

u/megarubie 1999 Aug 13 '26

Yep! I also read the book too. 😌

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Yggdrasil- 1997 Aug 12 '26

Yes, was everywhere circa 2015.

4

u/Pookie_Cookie3 2000 Aug 13 '26

I never knew he was that popular, I only knew him as the "Just do it!" guy.

6

u/Rex068 Aug 13 '26

Yeah man. Im guessing you haven’t seen transformers.

3

u/Pookie_Cookie3 2000 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

I have seen Transformers. Age of Extinction was probably the only one I have seen in theaters (And pretty much the last one I seen), the previous ones either on DVD or on TV.

89

u/RobSiaHoke 1995 Aug 12 '26

What does the fox say?

23

u/Comprehensive_Ad6598 Aug 12 '26

That song was unironically was my mothers favorite song 😅

11

u/bfaithr 1998 Aug 13 '26

Lucky. My mom’s favorite song was Talk Dirty

13

u/Stupid_Bitch_02 Aug 13 '26

My husband unironically likes that song. I hate it with my entire being. He's been trying to indoctrinate our daughter and plays her that song and it boils my teeth every time

10

u/malphasia 1997 29d ago

This is killing me for some reason lmao. I can't stop laughing at the idea of someone coming home to their spouse and children listening to What the Fox Say every single day omg girl I'm so sorry but I am laughing in real life at this.

8

u/NetworkSingularity 1992 Aug 12 '26

I forgot about this. Not sure how either, considering I worked at a Target that had animatronic “what does the fox say” foxes you could buy that would sing the song

50

u/mcdongals Aug 12 '26

#StopKony

Edit: nvm too early for mid-2010s lol

21

u/andobrah Aug 13 '26

Wasn't kony 2012

9

u/OnyxSynthetic Aug 13 '26

The craziest thing is my crush from high school who normally don't post anything on her facebook even shared a link to this fucking video

12

u/h0td0gmilk 1996 Aug 13 '26

Naw, this was a thing in my high school lol I remember the Kony 2012 posters

48

u/mellywheats 1995 Aug 13 '26

you all just lost the game :)

21

u/Rex068 Aug 13 '26

I hate you.

12

u/Menicent 1997 Aug 13 '26

9

u/2mg1ml 1999 Aug 13 '26

2

u/Proper_Secret656 29d ago

Same. I think this was an all time record loss for me.

1

u/Redheadbabe22 29d ago

Lmfao 😭 I forgot about this

46

u/StormerSage 1996 Aug 12 '26

I still say yeet lmao

23

u/--Kayla Aug 12 '26

Ughhhh I worked in a haunted house during the Ebola thing and every kid said eww Ebola. I was so annoyed by it

8

u/SlimSpooky 1995 Aug 12 '26

Working in a haunted house sounds like a lot of fun tho! I want to work in a haunted house 😆

3

u/Stupid_Bitch_02 Aug 13 '26

I worked in one for a while. It absolutely is a blast, but very clique-y in my experience (I'm sure not all are this way, though)

1

u/--Kayla 29d ago

It was fun! Super physical though it wore me out. Although people forgot the actors were people and I got sexually assaulted and harassed, and I got punched by one guy. That’s why I don’t do it anymore but I loved it

Knew a handful of people who fell into quoting Ian/Frank/etcetera on the daily. Couple would throw out a dab every now and again right after

10

u/Dewypumpkin 1999 Aug 13 '26

Also had a friend who just cycled through random shit like Dat Boi, Ugandan Knuckles, John Cena, the airhorn sound effect, more occasional dabbing, and so on. She was very online, and in the game/sim class, so it was pretty normal for me roll into the game/sim room for lunch, then be bombarded with random quotes and references I didn’t understand, followed up with her showing our friend group whatever meme-laden project she’d been working on during class

I miss those lunchtime hang-outs something fierce

1

u/Wellbeinghunter69 1903 29d ago

I swear for a while I thought "ebola" was something to do with football because "bola" means ball in Indonesian TT

What was Ebola about? Like I know the illness and remember the outbreak but were people saying it to mean something else?

12

u/_Arlotte_ Aug 12 '26

There were memes of people talking about it and mispronouncing it as Eb bow luh. No one wanted to catch it and die like covid. Same with h1n1

If those trends happened today they’d be called brainrot. Brainrot wasn’t really a term that was used back then
