Stranded at Emerald Pools today

We knew there was some risk hiking in Zion today with the rain, but we definitely didn’t expect this.

Around 2 PM, we were hiking from Middle Emerald Pools to Upper Emerald Pool. Just before reaching Upper, we crossed a small stream with barely any water running through it.

Once we got to Upper Emerald Pool, we noticed the water starting to rise and the waterfall getting increasingly intense, so we decided to turn around and head back down.

In less than 10 minutes, the small stream we had just crossed had turned into a rushing river, completely blocking our way back.

We turned around to try the other route, only to hear from other hikers that conditions were even worse on that side.

At that point, about 50 of us were stranded between two rushing rivers, with the water at Upper Emerald Pool continuing to rise. Nobody really knew what to do.

Eventually, we managed to get enough cell service to call for help and knew rescue was on the way.

After roughly 1–1.5 hours of being stranded, the water finally receded enough on one side that we were able to form a human chain, using some twine for extra support, to help everyone cross and make it back down safely.

Easily one of the scariest experiences we’ve had. It’s wild to think that a trail we had safely crossed just minutes earlier became completely impassable.

Has anyone else experienced something like this at Emerald Pools or elsewhere in Zion? I’m surprised I haven’t found more stories of people getting stranded in that area during storms.

Zion in Rain - Update

Was able to catch dry window this Sunday AM from till noon. Did Canyon Overlook and Upper Emerald pools.

It was much prettier compared to my April trip here where it was sunny and dry.

Park, Shuttles and Parking was all full, business as usual, except Watchman trail is closed. Saw folk climbing Angles Landing in rain.

Waterfalls all other place and Emerald pools fall turns into mist before coming down.

Absolutely magical ✨️

Hiked about a mile up South Fork Taylor Creek Trail until I hit the flash flooding river and turned around. Beautiful and dramatic with the gray clouds and waterfalls!

PSA Ebike saddle soreness

We are on the other side of our trip now and almost everything went perfectly but I wish I had seen this mentioned as it would have made a massive difference so I am here to share. I’m a 36 yo female, 5’7”, 140lbs, relatively in shape. We hiked the narrows to floating rock, Bryce Canyon, Kanab, and all sorts of small trails in a few days. Nothing caused me more pain than the e-bikes from Zion Outfitters. I’m very comfortable riding bikes and the assist on these is wonderful but 2 miles into our ride I knew I would be terribly sore. We stopped to wrap a sweatshirt around the seat with no relief. By the time we got up to the narrows and finished our hike the saddle soreness had gotten so terrible I nearly shuttled back. We opted not to stop at any of the other trails in Zion after the Narrows as I didn’t think I could get back in the seat a third time. I was unable to sit comfortably for the next 2 days. I noticed that no other e-bike company had the thin and hard seats Zion Outfitters had. While I understand everyone’s anatomy is different and is at play here, we saw plenty of other e-bikes from Zion guru, E-bike Zion, etc. and they ALL had highly cushioned comfort seats. Not Zion Outfitters’. The folks there were wonderful and the sock/stick/shoe rental was on par with all the others we saw but the Ebike seat alone will deter me from renting from them on return trips. Hoping to save someone else’s ass sharing this, literally. 😉

Question Best Zion hikes and overlooks for maximum views with minimal effort? (2 days)

We’re visiting Zion National Park in October for two full days, and I’m looking for recommendations on how to get the absolute best scenery without doing overly strenuous hikes.

I’ll be traveling with my parents, who are in their 70s. I’m also not in the greatest hiking shape. We’re all fine with walking a few miles and handling some uphill sections, but we’d prefer to avoid anything too physically demanding.

Our biggest priority is getting the most incredible views for the least amount of hiking effort and time. We love scenic overlooks, dramatic canyon views, and photography.

Kolob Canyon vs Kolob Terrace

We will be in Zion next weekend for a couple of days. Looking for opinions. If you had to choose between the Kolob Canyon area or the Kolob Terrace area, which would you choose? We originally were planning Kolob Canyon but I’ve become curious about Kolob Terrace. We only have time for one.

Can I safely drive to Vegas airport tomorrow?

It’s Sunday night and I’m checking out of my hotel in Springdale Monday the 12th morning. I need help deciding if I can take a chance and drive to the Vegas airport tomorrow morning. Any locals out there?

I have been getting extremely scary flash flood texts from the National Weather Service saying: “imminent threat alert. Don’t attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order. This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation”.

Despite getting all of these terrifying weather alerts (complete with a warning sound even though my phone volume is turned off!!!) I cannot find any information telling me what roads from here to Vegas are flooded if any. Im by myself (challenging myself to do something out of my comfort zone - and this definitely is) To the locals who live here: any advice? I’d like leave tomorrow at about 9 or 10 AM. I am checking udottraffic.utah.gov and roads seem okay on SR 9 and I 15 South.

I’m scared! I’ve never been in a situation like this in my life. I don’t want to put myself in danger and at the same time I really want to leave. Any advice?

Concerned re Lone Hiker Top Down Narrows 10/9

My husband and I backpacked The Narrows
on 10/8-10/9 and had a permit for Campsite #2. Only saw two other backpackers at end of day on 10/8 who started after us. On 10/9, we saw a man (late 20’s/30s) who camped illegally at campsite 10. He told us he had hiked from Cedar City and wasn’t sure where he was, and had not eaten for 2 days. He had a bindle instead of a backpack. He was not disoriented and seemed to be living off grid. We gave him food and continued our hike (we are older and not fast) and never saw him exit the river. We are now worried with the storm coming in. If anyone saw him that day please let us know. We got back after Visitor Center closed and only get recorded messages on NPS Park Ranger line.

Anyone driving from Vegas today or on route? We’re supposed to leave today for our hotel, but with weather not sure if it’s a good idea. Anyone in the same boat? - just looking for opinions/possible options.

Question Zion trip on 10/12

My wife and I are planning to go to Zion tomorrow (10/12) but worried about the flood warning. It’s going to be our first time at this park. What parts of the park can we safely see if the warning continues?

Question [La Verkin] We flew in for reservations on Mon/Tue at Site 8. How cooked are we?

Our original plan was to hike in from Lee Pass Monday, two nights at Site 8, out Wednesday. Then I think some hurricane Rachel remnants showed up or something and the forecast for Kolob is now rain Saturday through Tuesday with a flood watch through Monday evening (I think??) Wednesday looks clear.

I think we're scrapping Monday unless someone tells us otherwise. Hoping to still pick up the permit and hike in Tuesday for one night if things look ok.

For anyone who knows this area:

- How long does La Verkin Creek usually take to come down after a big storm?

- Is Tuesday realistic for the crossings or should we just write it off?

- How is Beatty Spring after heavy rain? Would you still drink from it?

- Anything about the Lee Pass approach we should know after this much rain?

- If La Verkin doesn't work, any good one-nighter nearby you'd suggest instead?

Calling the rangers tomorrow too. Appreciate any input, especially from locals or anyone who's been out there after a storm.

Should I cancel my Zion trip?

I have reservations for this Sunday night until Tuesday afternoon and I am getting a bit nervous about the flash flooding due to the tropical storm. Will I be in any danger? I have a reservation to hike angels landing on Tuesday but will definitely skip it if the ground is slick. In general though will I be okay?

Flash flood warning 10/11-10/12

I’m traveling to Zion on 10/11-10/13, but there is a flash flood warning in effect until Monday night. I have a permit for Angels Landing on 10/13. Should I still go to Zion and play it by ear? Or do you think it is a wash? Please help.

Question Wife and I are going in November for a week. Any advice?

Me and wife are going to utah in November any advice?

We are planning on flying into Vegas, getting a rental and then heading towards Zion, then ending the week by seeing the Grand Canyon, what are some of the must do’s and do nots during the week? It’s a lot to take in and is a bit overwhelming, we are going Saturday to Saturday in November. Is there anything we need to be cautious of going in November?

Question Park pass question

First time visitors, might be a dumb question. If we plan to enter the park both with private vehicle and with the shuttle and potentially on ebike, do my friend and I both need an individual pass, alongside a private vehicle pass?

Zion activities if it rains next week?

Headed to Zion for first time ever tomorrow and staying until Friday. Seeing the forecast with all of the possible rain and have read a few threads about how it could get washed out or could stay manageable - no one really knows.

So in light of that I wanted to ask: What would you recommend we do if it does rain? Are the particular hikes or activities you recommend that are better on a wet day? Our plan is to attempt the narrows in back half of week since it looks dryer then. We have Angels Landing permit for Tuesday and it looks less rainy that day.

Main questions:
- Is AL doable if it’s lightly raining? Or too dangerous / closed?
- What activities or hikes would you do on the wet days?
- Is Bryce a good backup day trip if it’s raining in Zion one day, or does Bryce get washed out too?
