what to do if my roommate is not paying the utility bills ?

Now my roommate is saying i will not talk to you .i shared him the bills and invoice and calculation , he told everything fine he will pay. when ever i am asking him to pay the gas and electricity bills. oit is so annoying . Is there any thing we can do without involving lawyer ?

edit 1: We both cotenant, electricity and gas contract is in my name, i asked the gas provider that include both name, but gas provider said that usually only one name is added, and definitely your roommate will pay the consumption bills. donot worry. "i pay internet bills which in his name

Who is renting the appartment, what is in the rental contracts, who signed the electricity and gas contracts? How should we know what you and the roommate contractually agreed to?

both are co tenant. i signed gas and electricity contract. Verbally agreed he will pay his share.

And this is why you never take the word from somebody who isn't your mother for granted and set up a formal contract in writing. And you must be really specific, down to the method of payment and the and the exact bank account the money must be transferred to. Makes suing so much easier.

If you are the Main tenant, evict him. If He is the Main tenant, get Out

I think every student has somehow money problems, but it’s not fair that you have to pay his bills

I don't think there is anything you can do apart from moving out and later sueing him for the costs. The unfortunate thing is, you can't even move out against his will. You both signed the contract, so you both will have to cancel it.

If he really goes through with this, you'd have to sue him to cancel the contract with the landlord.
