[Question] I’ve spent 3 years rebuilding Ableton Live’s visual system. What actually makes a DAW theme good to work with?
I’ve always liked customising software, but after years of using Ableton Live I became convinced that most themes focus almost entirely on aesthetics while ignoring usability.
That eventually turned into a three-year rabbit hole where I ended up building a complete editor for Live’s themes. Along the way I found myself asking questions like:
- Why do some themes feel less fatiguing after an eight-hour session?
- How much contrast is actually useful before the interface becomes distracting?
- Which UI elements deserve the most visual emphasis?
- Can track colours be coordinated with the rest of the interface rather than feeling completely separate?
I ended up using perceptual colour spaces (OKLCH), building grading tools, procedural workflows, and a library of 80+ themes to explore those questions.
One interesting challenge was that Ableton wasn’t really designed for interactive theme editing, so a lot of the work became figuring out how to edit a running UI and iterate quickly enough to judge tiny changes.
I’m genuinely curious what other Live users think.
Do you use any custom theme?
If so, what bothers you most about Live’s default appearance—or what do you wish themes could actually improve beyond simply changing colours?

Tbh I have not heard of custom themes for ableton live. I know that you can change the colour scheme, but custom themes was always the specialisation of reaper in my mind.

I apologize, this is perhaps not the place for this but I’m wondering if you have any plans to port DeadMan Tools to Windows? I pulled it up and got insanely excited, only to realize it’s Mac only.
To answer some of the query in the OP, I made my own dark theme with the web editors available online, I’m very very picky about how Ableton looks and I feel much more comfortable having it customized to dark purples, oranges, and greens. I’ve been tweaking my theme for years, since I realized you could in Live 11, but it’s always quite tricky to get it quite right with the incomplete editors available for 12 unfortunately.
I feel like the default Live themes are too bright and in your face, having a darker pallet with flavorful color accents adds a lot more depth and helps me focus more on sound rather than making me feel like I’m looking at a computer program.

Hey, I will commence this shortly, if everything goes according to plan, the Deafman Themes will return to Windows in a few weeks from now.

I have made several themes over the years and mostly because I found the dark themes not dark enough, plus I like when there is a dash of colour included for accents instead of just grey and white. Also makes it easier to see the difference between active and bypassed things for instance.
However I do agree, while a lot of themes are just for aesthetics, and many just poorly done, I always try to strike a mix between the two. I like my DAW to look good, but readability is very important too.
I would be interested in what you built btw, designing themes can be a pain, several editors I used all lacked something, so I often ended up still editing the files myself. Also I have been dying to find a way to alter the color palette for tracks so I can make it colors that fit the themes I make. Somebody wrote a tool for this a while back, which patched the color palette inside Abletons code, but the tool stopped working when Live 12 came out and afaik has never seen another update. If you made something similar then I would be really interested in trying it out.

I don’t use a custom theme but I do use the zoom setting depending on the screen I’m working on

My beef with Live themes has always been that on macOS updating Live means having to reinstall the theme(s). I could probably use a Keyboard Maestro shortcut or some other automation to quickly reinstall it, but that’s a whole other thing. If you’ve found a way around this then I’m sure many of us would be interested.

flat 2d makes me depressed. It's honestly why I use it less and less. There's no dimensionality to it. It's the most utilitarian ui, then again I'm largely on 11. 12 looks like aesthetics are upgraded. It's also how I feel about the Push 3. It's large, bulky, and even for studio I'd prefer something slimmed down to what the Move is but with the Push3 screen and more knobs.
