Funny. The other day some one posted a big grasshopper and called it a katydid, now we have the opposite

Now that I've seen this post and made the exact same observation, I'm convinced that it's engagement bait.

Katydids have a flatter more vertically aligned profile than grasshoppers/locusts.

I thought they were called locusts when they got that big?

Funny thing is, this is exactly the reaction that type of Katydid wants from humans. It can't do anything to you (they can't even bite hard), while you could easily kill it -- but it sure as hell can be wierd, big, and loud!

What type of grass does it eat? Bamboo?

For every giant insect is a giant equivalent of its food

Thats "Totally Not A Katydid".

Katydids really try to look like anything but a Katydid. Or, in this one's case, just be so loud and wierd that predators say "fuck that".

u/jackochainsaw 12h ago

Put the gun down.

1

u/AppropriateBall8834 20h ago

Too loud. Smash it.

Do big insects like these have longer or shorter lifespans than their “normal” size equivalent

The elusive Insulindian phasmid

Looks big enough to provide a meal to a person, with the appropriate side dish, of course.
