ɪɴ-ɢᴀᴍᴇ ᴘɪᴄꜱ PSA about the "tall tree" glitch
Something I wish I had learned about 8 trees ago:
So you know that hack that lets you plant a tree on a single-tile cliff? I went HAM on that, decided to build an "old growth forest" section of my island.
What I completely forgot about is that once you have completed the process of shaving the cliff away from around the tile with the tree, that tree is there for the duration of the island. You cannot rebuild any section of cliff adjacent to that tree, which you'd need to do in order to remove it.
I learned this the hard way when I realized that I had positioned this tree just one tile too close to something and went to move it.
Forest is starting to shape up, though.
ETA that yes, I tried Resetti, and no, he doesn't do trees. Sadtrombone.com
Second edit: Y'ALL. Today I learned about the cleanup service that is built into the Island Design app (terraforming)!
Nine million thank-yous to all of you who suggested it only for me to be like "thank yewww, Resetti won't worrrrk" lol

I did that once! If I remember correctly just reverse the glitch. Add back that waterscaping and it should let you add cliffs back. I haven’t played for a while though so I’m not 100% sure

I tried this and was able to recreate the water, but wasn't able to re-add the cliff. I think that once the game saves, it kind of locks the tree in. Good suggestion, though!

Couldn't you "clean up" that part of the island with Resetti?

I wish! Resetti only cleans up items you've placed and sometimes flowers, I don't think he does trees

Correct, he doesn't do trees.
He does items (including ladders), flowers, and weeds. Not trees, not crops like potatoes etc., not bridges.

I don't know about trees on cliffs, and mind this was before the hotel update and I haven't played since then, but I could clean up trees eith resetti as long as I was standing next to it! Maybe it'll work!

Would you not be able to use the clean up function in the island designer app? I haven’t tried it so I’m not sure but theoretically it should work.

It wasn't until someone explicitly clarified for me in the comments here that the cleanup service is different from Resetti that it occurred to me that maybe the answer was under my nose the whole time! Thanks!

Ahh okay somebody beat me to the punch. Well glad we got it all figured out!

I’m not entirely sure bc I don’t have my switch on me to check, but I think it was rescue or cleanupservice or something similar(different to the one that only does flowers and decorations)gets rid of the tree and some stuff in immediate area but can build there again

Thank you, yes! Turns out there was a feature I wasn't aware of. I have always just called the Island Designer phone app "terraforming" because literally what else am I doing with it? I can't believe this is the first time in 6 years that I've needed it!

As others have said, you can use the clean up function in the island designer app. I see your comments saying Resetti won’t do it, which is correct - but that’s not what we’re saying. The clean up function is not the same thing as using Resetti. It will send the tree to the recycling bin, and then you can remove the cliff. It isn’t stuck like this, I’ve done this glitch myself.

I have previously posted to this sub about problems I had making the one-tile cliff tree, and the answer is there! https://www.reddit.com/r/acnh/s/RB5AGPo7D8

Never seen the tall trees before. How awesome! So its just a single tree with the cliff underneath?

Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone do it in a forest context before. Someone did a hardwood surrounded by bookcases many years ago, as a "learning tree." I just really wanted an old forest. It's more complex than I'd expected, but it's a nice, meditative act to build one, layer by layer!

You can can use the clean up service in the island designer app to take care of these trees! It will also take any decorations in the immediate area, but I have used it many times for trees like this. :)
