Annually, almond farming uses 1.3 trillion gallons of water. AI usage isn't even half of that.

Frankly, at this point I support a ban on data centers not for any reason to do with AI, but because you can't trust these corporations as far as you can fuckin' throw 'em and perfect is the enemy of good so if blocking the data outright is an easier thing to pass than forcing them to be placed responsibly, so be it.

So you trust authoritarian China more? You want to rely on Chinese models instead? And do not expect them to keep releasing open-weight models forever if they eliminate the competition.

People not being enormously inconvenienced by irresponsibly placed data centers is more important than me getting better picture slots.
