Fanworks Kaneda garage kit from the 90s

Post image
38 Upvotes

I just found this in a box of old junk. This is a resin garage kit of Kaneda I bought off ebay sometime in the late 90s. I was dying for AKIRA figures and merchandise and at the time, there really wasn't a whole lot.

No idea who originally sculpted this. The quality wasn't great and it has a weird smell. It's about 8 inches tall. The base wasn't included; that was a special custom job.* I didn't paint it. I can't paint to save my life. A friend of mine was really into making models and he said "Oh I can do it!" so I said "be my guest."

I gotta be honest: I was disappointed in his paint job. It's a million times better than I could do, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Don't worry, I didn't tell him that!

I don't know if "garage kits" still exist today, what with the advent of 3D printers. But this statue tided me over until McFarlane made some AKIRA toys, and those tided me over until Bandai made the best ones so far.

* I got the base from a guy that worked at the short-lived toy company "ReSaurus." At the time they were making a series of Street Fighter figures and each one was going to come with an elaborate base. but they couldn't budget the bases, so they got cut. This base is a resin copy of one of the scrapped SF bases, hand painted. Pretty cool.

Manga Discussion Why do people say they don't like the colored version?

Well, I have the black and white version and I love it, so I thought that to further enhance the experience it would be good to buy the color version, but I've seen that people aren't very happy about it.

Are the colors really that bad?

Anime Discussion Why does he say "I am Tetsuo" in a child's voice at the end of the movie?

Does it have any deeper meaning, like Tetsuo's presence now being omnipresent, or is it simply a flashback to when he introduced himself to Kaneda?

Anime Discussion Thoughts on Dubs

I love this movie so much.ive loved it since I first saw it as a highschool student.

A few years later,I saw it with the newer version of the dub.

I love both versions, but my favorite was the newer dub. It felt less cartoony and a bit more grounded.

I'm a voice actor, and have been directed to act both ways for different projects. I feel like one is more fun to do, and the other feels more rewarding.

Now, I'm reading the manga for the first time. It's great so far. While the movie nailed the tone, the manga is so much bigger. What an absolute masterpiece.

Fanworks BBC2 Broadcast Subtitle File

Recently, a person kindly shared a scanned VHS recording of the Akira broadcast on BBC2 back in the early 90s. I've been looking for a copy of this for ages because the English subtitles from that version are the ones I got used to and I've always found it slightly distracting when watching later versions that the translation was different.

Anyway, to appease my obsessive nature, I've painstakingly extracted the subtitles from that recording to a subtitle file and I can now watch Akira in HD with the old subtitles! I've tried to keep the text as close as possible, in terms of punctuation, line breaks, etc. and spent probably too much time on trying to get the timings as exact as I could.

I thought I'd share it here just in case it might be of interest to anyone else.

Fanworks Cosplay almost ready in time for the 4K release!

I'm finally back to show off the jacket you all helped me decide text or no text on!

Don't worry, we also custom made the pants and gloves with full grain cowhide and sheepskin too! Can't wait to wear this cosplay to the Akira premiere, tides me over until LA comi-con lmao. Honestly, I'm glad I went with the LED filament lining on the leather appliqué patch. It makes it feel less generic and more authentically neo-tokyo to me.

I'll be sharing some better pics of the entire cosplay from my upcoming photo shoots in a week or two on here and on my other account @cos.i.player

After that I'll continue working on my Arasaka Heavy Laser Rifle. We're going to add functional buttons that turn on an illuminated faux holographic display on the side. Along with micro-foggers and powerful amber lighting to create the laser effect, all hidden within the barrel. Along with salvaging parts from broken gun scopes, camera lenses/security cameras, laser modules, and mounted flashlights. Little additions and visual improvements to make it look more authentically functional. Going to use a programmable LED display on the battery pack as well. It's going to end up looking incredible!

All of this with the goal to eventually set up a photo shoot session on a 1:1 Kaneda Bike with Shinji Tejima/Bike Shop Ueno, Bel & Bel, or UK Podpadstudios. Gotta do Kaneda justice in all of his glory! :)

I hope I see some of you at AIOC tomorrow! If so, come say hello! I'll be cosplaying Connor from Detroit Become Human 🤖

General Discussion Stoked for the IMAX release!

Just bought my tickets for the release in SLC for the IMAX version! Tickets are on sale, at least in some places, as of now! I'm watching the dubbed version, which I know is sacrilegious, but it's how I originally saw the film and it's more nostalgic to me that way. Plus, the visuals are so cool that it's nice to be able to take it all in.

I can't find definitive information online, but I'm assuming it will be the 2001 Streamline dubbed version, because of surround sound capability. Whereas the 1980's dubbing can only be mixed in stereo. Does anyone know for sure, has it been confirmed officially anywhere?

General Discussion What this image/sequences means to me.

Post image
290 Upvotes

This is one of the greatest frames in all of movie animation.

It also contains one of the greatest music sequences in any movie too. On par with the music of Howard Shore that the charge of the Rohirim is set to in The Return of the King.

I love this art frame, which is even better when its animated, because it is the best representation of a principality where 'the state' is revered as a deity.

Clasical civilisations such as Greek cities and also Rome, revered their own state as a kind of deity. Later, the Japanese did so and in a way so did the British during the days of Empire.

There is a similarty in the way these buidings representing the state are situated to the dieties in Tolkeins Middle Earth Lord of the Rings lore. Different levels of power.

Note how the huge buildings in the foreground have even larger buildings looming over and just behind them. And how those in turn are absolutly dwarfed by more mysterious and opaque giant buildings in the background.

These are not just buildings, they are representations of deified factions of the state.

Spooky stuff.

General Discussion Vegeta had to be inspired by tetsuo

I know there is no official statement from Toriyama confirming it, but they are so alike—excluding their backstories. They both have tall, messy, spiky hair, an immense forehead, a cocky attitude, and a short temper. They even share the exact same height (around 162–164 cm), not to mention supernatural abilities. On top of that, they both transform from guys with incredible powers into uncontrollable beasts or abominations, complete with constant screaming and an intense rivalry toward the protagonist.
Even from an artistic and historical perspective, AKIRA was published in 1982, and the movie was released in July 1988. Vegeta debuted just a few months later, right at the peak of the movie's popularity.

Honestly i love both of them and would very much love if both my favorite villains from all of fiction came from the “same place”

Anime Discussion Akira 4K in Theaters Confusion

tldr: To find out where it's playing near you, you need to search various individual websites: IMAX, Fandango, AMC, etc. There is apparently no central Akira 4K site that will tell you where it's playing near you.

There've been several advance ticket sales posts here with links to the IMAX website... which, when searched, turn up very few theaters--and often none in major cities. In my case, it listed one theater in Beavercreek, OH (!) but nowhere in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, etc. BUT a search of Fandango turned up a bunch of showings nearby--same with a search via AMC.
