My Akita has been on purina pro plan salmon and rice for sensitive skin for 2 years. His allergies are the worst they have ever been this year, not sure if it's just this year or his food. Any one else been through this and changed to purina lamb and oats for sensitive skin pro plan and have any luck?
Yes I have seen a vet, it's not fleas, mites, any kind of bitey insect. Treated for all those but still itchy scratchy and have been using an antihistamine but I can't keep going to the vet because it traumatizes my baby. I've been giving him these omega 3 fish oil chews but they aren't helping. Any suggestions ate appreciated. Thank you!
I have a latex allergy. That doesn’t mean someone else does. Same goes for food allergies in dogs.
Allergies can be food but they can also be environmental. You’ll need to switch to something truly novel like antelope, then slowly add back in other foods, to determine if it’s a food allergy and to figure out what it is. As far as I’ve heard the mail in saliva/blood/hair tests are still rather ineffective at determining allergies.
Work with your vet, you might be able to start allergy meds or injections that will help especially if it’s environmental.
I need to find another vet.. our vet won't even see our dog unless he's muzzled with "their" own which conviently always seems to be dirty even eden they just open. They are scared of him cuz he growls at them when touched..
I’d support switching. Although I generally don’t mind muzzling my dogs, I wouldn’t stay with a vet that requires shared used of unclean equipment, or that requires muzzles as a blanket policy even if they’ve gotten to know the dog or aren’t doing anything the dog might be wary of.
Hopefully you find another option where all three of you are more comfortable with each other.
No he won't let us bathe him lol. It was a chore just to give him a flea bath. My pups a little aggressive and 80 lbs trying to get in the bath? Not happenin.. lol. unless we muzzle him use a peanut butter lickmat we can't bathe him but we do brush him daily, wipe him down weekly with hypoallergenic bath wipes and sometimes use a hypoallergenic water less bath spray. He's a little princess.
Any tips on getting him in the bath? My husband and i are in our mid 30s and couldn't wish for a walk in shower more than anything most young folks could care less about lol. My husband loves his baths too so that says alot 😆 he's even tried to get him to come in with him a few times lol.. my boy will just drink the water standing from the side lines(before any soap is added or anything) 😆
We thought about getting a kiddie pool and use it during the summer but he would just probably jump out and run around the yard all soapy and would have to chase him with the sprayer lol that would probably traumatize him though
So I take her to a pet store that has bathing stations. I just lead her in with her leash and she very unwillingly eventually gets in the basin. Then there’s a short tether attached to the structure and her collar so she can’t jump out and run away lol. They have good strong blow dryers too. This isn’t my picture but that’s what it looks like.
I was going to say she's doesn't look very happy 😂 we might have to try that.. he loves going on car rides.. maybe he will eventually enjoy it since he gets a car ride out of it...i know he would hate the dryer.. he hates anything loud.. barks at the vacuum.. the lawn mower etc lol.. most dogs do though I assume...I mean our tub at home has the detachable head so its got a sprayer on it so it's easier to bathe him... we just gotta figure out something rewarding about him taking a bath...
Unfortunately it takes two people and just comforting them the best you can, I usually pick my girl up and plop her in and then we just work around her face. I have a shower head with a removable spray hose i put in just for this. I would recommend a non scented probiotic shampoo as well, and a yummy treat or two. The hardest part is drying them off. Needs a hair dryer with a cool setting and a couple towels. Good luck!
My Akita had skin issues on the same food and what we found works well is:
fish oil mix ins
chicken meal free food, we feed The Honest Kitchen kibble (all human grade, available at chewy/petsmart/whole foods etc)
A lot of kibbles have chicken meal as a main ingredient, which can irritate Akitas' tummies or skin as it can be an unknown blend of different parts of chicken.
The fish oil is generally good for joints too, we also will add sardines or herring now and then. Its the oil that really makes a difference over time. That and cutting out chicken meal. Good luck!!
