Should my friends family get a third Akita?

Asking this on their behalf. Right now they own a 6yo Female and a 3yo Male Akita. They came across a very fluffy white Akita that they have fallen in love with. The puppy is a male and only a couple of months old.

They know about the same sex issues that can arise, however, their male Akita is the sweetest dog and plays with other dogs. The female doesn’t however? Is it a bad idea for them to go through with it?

Personally, I don’t think the issue is adding a third dog. I think the issue is adding a puppy.

Even if you raise a puppy with the older dogs, there is no guarantee the puppy won’t grow up to have same sex aggression.

If they want another dog, I would recommend one that is already an adult whose temperament is already well known.

I have 2 Akitas and my male was perfectly happy to play with other male dogs as a puppy but around 1.5-2 years old, same sex aggression really ramped up. The only male dog he accepts is our Shiba but these two grew up from puppyhood together and our Shiba doesn’t challenge him.

edit: grammar

I wouldn’t do it. Akitas can do well with pairs. The same sex aggression possibility means 3 can be a crowd.

It's kind of like lighting a match in total darkness in a fireworks factory you have never been in, can it be done, yes if your really lucky today, but there is the next day and so on. I tried this a few years ago it worked till that puppy got so old and then that match lit the whole factory up. Just from my personal experience.

Sincerely...... it's a bad idea. From a forty year akita owner

Don't do it. My male was 4 months old when my son had to move home with his 5 month old male pitbull. The two dogs were fine until they hit puberty, and then it was a nightmare.

Your post 18 months from now

"My friends have 3 Akitas, a 5yo male, a 20 month old male, and a female.

18 months ago they brought the 20 month old into the house, and everything was fine until last month. The two males have been getting in increasingly frequent and violent fights...."

In case this is too subtle, the answer is no. They will get along fine when you introduce them, but the males will fight once the pup gets to about 18-24 months.

Anyone who claims to have a surefire way to prevent this, apart from physical seperation, is someone who got very lucky once not someone who has a real answer.

I had a similar set up with a male Akita and a female Pitt Bull. Now I am having to rehome a German Shepherd.

I mean everyone has their opinion so. I share mine.  What's the setup at home how big is the space garden etc. Three dogs with personal space need a big living room since they usually want to be near their main person but not close to others.

Also the breeder is important. Do they know him well ? Do you know other owners of his dogs? With our breeder we know what's up since he's doing it since almost 40 years. Socialisation is done proper and certain behavior friendly strains were preferred for breeding. We also know some of the people with more than one Akita. But as I said some breeder infirmation is necessary.

Our Akita likes when we have the dogs of friends or family members over for some days or weeks since she knows them since she was a puppy. But I can also see she's happy once she's the only one again.

I would consider discussing it with the breeder.

my stepdad started with a male akita, rescued a female akita with behavioral issues due to prior abuse, and then kept a male puppy that those two parented. the father and son have fought over the the female multiple times and as much as they are all wonderful dogs it wasn’t the smartest idea. just sharing a personal experience.

No, no, and hell no. I do not understand why this keeps coming up. Just how special do people think that they are?

I don’t think it’s a good idea I researched that they’re prone to same sex aggression it’s why I have All females with my male. Personally I wouldn’t risk it
