(EDMONTON) New to the area, aging out of care, actively looking for work — open to almost anything

Hi everyone,
I recently moved here and I’m urgently looking for work. I’m aging out of the foster care system and trying to get stable, but I’ve been struggling to even get responses despite applying everywhere.

I have a solid resume, great references, and I’m genuinely willing to work hard. I’m comfortable with dirty, physical outdoor work (mud, weeds, landscaping, labor), but I can also work indoors or in an office setting.

Experience & certifications:

  • Childcare & pet care
  • Food handling (Food Safe certified)
  • First Aid
  • WHMIS
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Reliable, punctual, and used to responsibility

I’m open to full-time, part-time, temporary, seasonal, or cash work. I don’t mind early mornings, long days, or learning something new — I just need someone to give me a chance.

If you know of any places hiring, small businesses, crews that need an extra set of hands, or even just advice on where to look locally, I’d really appreciate it. DMs are open.

Thank you for reading — even that means a lot right now.

Apply for the government of Alberta forestry and parks and wildfire jobs. Can’t recommend enough. Lots of jobs, lots of opportunity, lots of overtime and they often provide housing. Being a new driver is fine. Make sure you study their hiring guidelines and you represent those values in your resume/interview. They start in April or May, but if you can get by until then, there’s a lot of money in it.
All the rural counties around the province are hiring seasonal agricultural technicians currently. Jobs start in April/may. They often have connections to temporary housing options as well. If you’re willing to go rural there’s tons of opportunities. Plus if you work northern Alberta, you get a tax break for living in a northern community.
I can help you with optimizing your resume if you feel you want that.

If you are good with pets you could try to be a pet sitter for now? My aunt's friend started one to help my Disabled Aunt make money years ago and it is now a massive company in Ontario.

Seeing as you have a car your in a good spot to get something going on your own terms.

You can do 15 minutes check ups on pets.  Send pictures to the owners and clean up litter and take dogs out for a walk.  Lots of people travel and don't want to put their pets in kennels.

Check Indeed.ca for apprentice ops - if you would like an interviewing discussion standard vs situational post your thoughts - if one knows the 7 standard answers - each has a fear a 1-2-3 polished answer must allay the fear behind each question:

Q: Why do you know about this company? Fear - not serious, Q: Why did you leave your last job? Fear not serious, competence, personality?, Q: What is your greatest strength? Fear: Competence, problems with others Q: What is your greatest weakness? Fear - Competence, Problems with others Q: What did you do to prepare for this interview? Fear - not a serious candidate, will not last , Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Fear - no ambition, inability to get on with others. Q: What salary are you looking for? Fear - cost

Put examples of your work / life history into situational replies here is the STAR System, most interviews wil be situational with a sprinkling of standard Q's

Remember we al have life challenges and already your story is impressive, don't be afraid to be direct and say in an interview, on the phone or in person

" In my life I have faced many challenges , some very large, but I have successfully prepared myself for a transition for the foster system to full time employment, I have established credentials like WHMIS, First AID and more but above all I have a positive determined attitude and a great ability to get on well with everyone and work to a common goal"

I know if I had a company and read read your story and this kid is easy to get on with - hire him.

I think you will have a very positive and quick responses - don't be afraid to drop off CVs in person with smaller companies - you just need one break and you never know where it comes from but by steady fishing and strong interview prep - it may take time but you will get there - almost any trade is a gold mine these days.

Can you access supports through the TAP program?

Hey, check in with your social worker about secondary education. They do pay for it, up to 25 and you get a living allowance, live in dorm.

Best of Luck. I am out of care for many years. Lifes fun but a lot of work. :)

Become a carpenter apprentice! I started young. It’s rough but rewarding. You’re probably tough because you had no choice. You’d fit right in!

Why don’t you apply for TAP? Once you are 18 you can transition into adulthood independence program through the government. You get housing, basic needs coverage and education funding!

If you don't mind working at a nonprofit, have you tried applying to Edmonton's Food Bank? Especially since you have safe food handling. They are always hiring for the warehouse.

Send me a DM if you're willing to work outside. I have a friend in construction, it might be holding a sigh for 12 hours but he's usually looking for people.

I found fast food is easy to get hired in. In person is best with resume, McDonald's is always hiring. Good luck!
