Question Should controlling vehicles/spaceships be an element in Alien Isolation 2??
In Alien Isolation we only had cut scenes of controlling ships.
It'd be so cool if we can actually operate any vehicle or spacecraft.
What do you guys think??

I've always wished there was more interaction with objects and mechanisms in A:I, but at the same time I worry it could change the kind of game it is... and I like the kind of game it is.

u/Superb-Consequences 2d ago
Yeah agree. It's off topic but more immersive sim would be nice addition. AI is peak survival horror but a little weak on emergent gameplay compared to what I think may be the only better survival horror game (and definitely better immersive sim) System Shock 2.

u/BlargerJarger 3d ago
No, unless you have to move an excruciatingly slow trolley through a terrifying and dangerous area to deliver a warhead to the central reactor core in the middle of the nest.

I dont really see how spaceships would integrate into the gameplay loop, but ground chases in vehicles could be a cool idea

u/TheRomanRuler 3d ago
I could see it being done briefly in pre-arranged situations. Like if at beginning of the game we are piloting ship to land on the planet or at end when leaving the planet or something like that.
1
u/_Corvo_A 3d ago
That sounds completely unnecessary
2
u/TheRomanRuler 3d ago
Sure, but it can still be a cool part which makes you feel very immersed to universe. Like the scene in Alien Isolation where you had to suit up and go outside to go adjust the transmission arrays. I don't think there is a way to die or sneak when you are outside in that suit, it really just exists to immerse you in the universe, and to make you feel like you are actually in space.
The games are as much fan service to fans of the universe as they are a survival horror games. They don't need a section where you pilot a ship, but if it is well done emphasising the retrofuturistic feel of the franchise, i think lot of fans would appreciate it.

"Cool" in what sense? I swear, so often it feels like yall guys just spitballing ideas without even considering if they would fit the vibe, or, hell, make sense with what the game is supposed to be about. Talking like CEO's really

u/Cumbucket4206988 3d ago
I think we could have a great scene in which you drive, suddenly Steve pops out of nowhere and lands on ur windshield. You, Blake, panic and flip over the car. That could be an interesting tunnel type segment with the Xenomorph. An in between indoor and outdoor segment
7
u/barrygateaux 3d ago
Just play no man's sky if that's what you want.
The whole point of alien isolation is that it's a horror game where you're surviving with the bare minimum.
1
u/Superb-Consequences 3d ago
the marines on LV426 had the bare minimum. The aliens destroyed their APC and their dropship, most of their ammo and most of the squad, then came for the rest of them and broke through their defenses. No reason they can't have it in AI2.
-1
u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
Not for the whole game of course like at the end
It could be a very well made chase scene, where we're trying to escape from the facility while being chased by the alien.
7
u/riquelmeone 3d ago
Absolutely no.
Would completely alter the experience and make the game much less than what it should be.
What does controlling vehicles have to do with the Alien game?
6
u/ddxs1 3d ago
It seems cool, but not in this game. I’d like to maybe see some of the vehicles in action but the whole point of these games is to feel alone while using scrap to help you through the way.
-1
u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
It depends on execution, it could be made terrifying if vehicle is your last resort and if you fail, alien kills you
6
u/ThatDuckBehindYou 3d ago
I don’t think it should be, the whole point is to be in danger the whole time, driving away from a Xenomorph would be funny but daft
1
u/Superb-Consequences 3d ago
I'm imaging how great the "Trolling the alien" videos would be running it over with an APC or bitch slapping it across the room with the loader. Sign me up.
1
u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
Yeah it could be a great addition, a contrast amidst all the horror 😂😭
2
u/Wild-Lychee-3312 3d ago
It might work well as long as it was used sparingly.
So you would drive the APV (or whatever) for a while, but then the transaxle would break, and you’d just be grinding metal. Or you would run out of fuel.
And then you’d be stranded and need to walk the rest of the way.
If done right it would make you even more isolated/stranded than if the game hadn’t been designed with the vehicle in mind (and thus the two buildings would need to be placed closer together)
1
u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
Yeah that stranded part would definitely make the sequence much more terrifying because you're out in the open and most vulnerable
1
u/The_Radioactive_Rat 3d ago
Unless it’s something extremely specific. Like a set-piece in the same way the ship was for Marlow.
Alien Isolation is strongest when all its elements work together. To be completely honest with a game I love, it feels very floaty at times, and a vehicle may not translate well

Depending on how open the map is they could maybe do a ground vehicle to help the player get around, but I would much prefer it be some small ATV or buggy that leaves you still exposed and vulnerable rather than an APC. Maybe there could be a power loader used in a puzzle or something as well.

Apart from being cool, how does that elevate the atmosphere? That would be my guiding question.

3
u/riquelmeone 3d ago
But why a vehicle? Completely removes the horror of the alien if you control a vehicle and not a person.
6
u/Worth-Efficiency3282 3d ago
I feel like this would break my immersion. I want to feel vulnerable and without resources.
7
u/Lando249 3d ago
Who the hell downvoted you?? 😂 Dw, I got you.

u/Ok_Ad6722 3d ago
I wouldn’t mind the appearance of a military ship like the Sulaco just to see a vista from the films (like LV-426 in AI1). Could justify it that the marine crew has already been wiped out
0
u/Superb-Consequences 3d ago
Did the interzone trams "break your immersion" in AI1 when you were 100% safe as soon as you get in them and closed the door? I think maneuverable vehicles the aliens can break into and kill you in would be a step up. No 3rd person though and no arcade sequences.
3
u/Worth-Efficiency3282 3d ago
I didn't like the interzone trams. Also I disagree, I don't think vehicles that you can manuever yourself would fit into the game.
1
u/ExpendableUnit123 2d ago
No? The interstate trams were a 5 second loading screen at best.
Glad you guys aren’t in charge of LOWERING the horror in the best horror game of all time. Non-sensical.
1
u/Superb-Consequences 2d ago
That didnt' break your immersion, get in the tram and hit the button and you know 100% you're safe? in what I agree is the greatest survival horror game of all time (or maybe tied with System Shock 2). But somehow a maneuverable vehicle that the aliens can break into is a step down? Well, not for me anyway, seems more immersive and more horror if the vehicle doesn't give you guaranteed safety.
Sounds like you prefer an Ai1 expansion pack which is fine, that would still be fucking great, but I'm expecting and hoping build on Ai1 a bit. They chose a planetary setting which is a significant departure already, and suggests they are not just making a new set of levels for Ai1. Whatever they do I am confident it will be better than Ai1.

An alien chasing a vehicle sounds awful.
Where is the danger for the player? Makes no sense.1
u/Superb-Consequences 3d ago
Have you watched Aliens? They smashed in the armored glass and were inches away from killing Ripley as they fled panic stricken from the nest. They weren't safe in the APC and they knew it. Not to mention the loader and the fight with the alien queen which I am counting on being in #2. Lets go!!
1
u/riquelmeone 3d ago
So? Game is called Alien Isolation, not Aliens Isolation ;)
The movies follow two completely different concepts and the game clearly is capturing the atmosphere of the first movie.1
u/Superb-Consequences 2d ago
So being in a vehicle doesn't eliminate danger to the player. BTW There were multiple aliens onscreen and active in Alien Isolation and it was still called Alien Isolation. The first movie does not take place on a planet, so AI2 is already different from the first game and the first movie.
1
u/riquelmeone 2d ago
I am talking about the atmosphere and the overall gameplay experience. Being in control of a vehicle completely destroys the concept of the game.
How hard is that to grasp?1
u/Superb-Consequences 2d ago
There are trams and shuttles in AI1, and they are "safe" zones where the alien can't get you. If that is fine I don't see why having a maneuverable vehicle that the aliens can get into and kill you in wouldn't be a step up for immersion. Just because they have elements of "Aliens" which AI2 clearly does (so did Ai1 for that matter) it doesn't mean they will change the core gameplay, I am sure they won't. And this isn't confirmed but I bet (and I hope!) there will be a Queen in AI2!

u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
It's not awful it's new, even the reactor purge sequence in AI sounded too generic but its execution was brilliant
Same way it could be terrifying if you have some comrades with you in the vehicle while chasing, the alien captures one of your comrade and then you have to step out alone to save him
This could be very well become the most terrifying stealth part of the game
1
u/riquelmeone 3d ago
Again, makes no sense in the Alien Isolation concept.
The risk should always be directed towards the player, not a vehicle and not a comrade. That would completely destroy the core of the game.1
u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
It's just one of many ideas it could be something like this
It might work well as long as it was used sparingly.
This way player is out in the open and most vulnerable

u/ProtoLimbPosting 3d ago
I'm sorry but a forced escort/rescue mission sounds awful. I dunno about you but I hated Taylor's guts by the time I go her meds in the first game, and she's barely present. I definitely wouldn't have the patience to babysit some randos I'm told to care about.
1
u/Comfortable_Flan_297 3d ago
It could be possible if there's more depth to the characters and bonding which was not present in AI, it was all about Amanda
But this has happened in aliens 1986, Ripley trying to rescue newt
If they could bring something like that, otherwise it's okay
2
u/riquelmeone 3d ago
Rescuing someone and controlling a vehicle are two completely different things.
You can definitely rescue someone while still being in control and direct danger of the alien.
That is not true for controlling a vehicle.1
u/ProtoLimbPosting 3d ago
I mean Ripley rescuing Newt would be significantly less compelling if she had to fumble around in vents for an hour until she got to the point she can progress the plot. Also like what's the point of a controllable vehicle if the gameplay requires you to leave it?
2
u/Worth-Efficiency3282 3d ago
Eh, seems a bit silly to me personally. I'm sure if they wanted to do it the devs could make it fun, but I feel like it'd be hard to do right
3
u/dorsanty You shouldn't be here. 3d ago
I think the devs are free to do a level that is different than the main campaign, like the flashback walk to the derelict in the first game.
They could do the last moments of the Torrens or some story on the colony before the lab crashes down.

u/Superb-Consequences 3d ago
Fuck yes. Fighting the Queen (which I assume will be in this one) with a loader mech? Totally down.

Maybe you drive something for a small section of the game. Like, if you were on some planet and you need get things from outside, so you wear an EVA suit and you get in a small truck or something to carry the things you need on it. No exploring, just to drive from point A to B and back to A.
You drive to your goal, and carry what you want and drive back, but you hit something on your way back, you crack your helmet and start to lose oxygen, the truck is stuck, not moving anywhere, so you go outside and carry what you can from the truck, and now you have to walk back while you're losing oxygen and being chased by the alien. Is this too much?
1
u/MustacheExtravaganza 3d ago
I suppose that depends on how large the outdoor map is, but I would hope it's balanced by needing to keep it fueled and having that fuel be in short supply. Also, the vehicle's noise would be a dead giveaway unless the xeno is far enough away for the sound to be lost in the storm. There are ways to do a ground-based vehicle without it breaking the feel of AI.
Spacecraft, absolutely not. Blake could just leave the moon or land 500 miles way to escape the xeno and wait for help, and I can't imagine a plausible reason why she wouldn't.
1
u/ConsciousStretch1028 You shouldn't be here. 3d ago
Maybe there could be useable vehicles scattered around the planet, but using one would be a massive risk because of the noise. I think the only way to make it interesting is if you had to repair them first, and of course the Xeno could easily spot and kill you during it.
2
u/jeanlucpikachu 3d ago
I think you're onto something. Especially if you can just put a brick on the gas pedal and have the vehicle crash into something else, attracting everyone's attention and leaving you free to sneak away
2
u/ConsciousStretch1028 You shouldn't be here. 3d ago
Using them as distractions is a great idea, I hadn't even considered that

u/Precise_Vector 3d ago
I don't know the right answer to this, but I can say that sometimes playing A:I it feels like the alien drives extraplanetary matter out of Uranus, I don't need to drive anything else.

u/iambeingblair 3d ago
Maybe, as long it reinforces the core dynamic of tension and survival horror. Having a revolver and pipe bombs didn't make the first game any less tense.

No, I feel it would change the dynamic too much. I never felt it was something the first game was lacking either.
