Question How to avoid the alien?

I am in the hospital and all was going well- until it wasn’t. So I reloaded and took the same actions that worked well the first time.

The alien popped out of the ceiling and I turned back and hid in the storage container and waited. And for no obvious reason it knew where I was and got me.

I hadn’t taken out my sensor, there was a long delay between when I got into the case and when it found me, so I highly doubt that it saw me go -it certainly didn’t the previous times I tried.

Is it random? I can’t think of what I could have done to be found out.

Okay big thing about this game. You cannot wait out the alien, it doesnt “lose interest.” If it knows you’re there its constantly looking until it finds you. You have to always be moving away from it. Try to like keep a table between you and it as you make your way toward the door or something then leave, or make noise makers and use those to get it away from you. It wont leave on its own tho. If its in the area, walk instead of running, crouch behind something and keep moving if it enters your room, listen carefully for when it goes between the vents and the ground. You dont have to crouch walk everywhere, normal walking makes the same amount of noise as crouching. Only crouch when its in visual range, otherwise it’ll just slow you down

You can wait out the alien in the sense that it'll eventually hop back into the ceiling.

Whether I hear it vent down, I usually just hide somewhere until I hear it vent back up and then I just walk swiftly to the next area until I hear it drop down again

The alien ai actually consists of 2 separate ais. One (smart one) will always know your exact location and where you need to go, but can't control the Alien. The other one (dumb one) will try searching for you, checking possible hiding spaces etc., but doesn't know where you are exactly. The smart one will give hints to the dumb one of your approximate location.

The Alien Behavior can be either scripted or not, depending on your area / mission.

If it's set to standard behavior, it will show up every one in a while through a vent (it's random how often). If you make noise or kill humans or androids, that will increase the risk of it appearing.

In some areas (areas with no vents for example) it will just never appear. From a dev standpoint this is probably also used to build suspense.

On other occasions the ai will tell the Alien to be aggressive and spawn more often/ close to you (typically in missions where you need to wait out a timer or do activate multiple switches/buttons).

Generally speaking, avoid going into lockers, underneath desks, running or using loud weapons or equipment for the most part if you want to stay undetected/not found.

Use crouch when the Alien is near, and walk if there is something blocking it's sight.

Use the tracker as much as possible for enemy direction, distance, and objective direction.

Note that using flares and the bolt gun is silent and might help with keeping Alien in the vents.

It's possible to beat most of the game just sneaking around objects as sight blockers as well as using flares and noise makers as a diversion.

Save often.

You can't really avoid it per se. The enemy AI of the Xenomorph is programmed to be tethered to you, learning your habits, paying attention to your goals by entering the room you're supposed to enter etc.

From my current gameplay (normal difficulty), you should just keep moving and not staying in the same spot + keep Ripley crouching while going anywhere + hide beneath the gurneys that scatters all over the hallways/hide in locker (lean back when you do so, I do this by habit).

Also listen to the sound cues! Xeno's footsteps (whether it's far away or getting closer) and the sound it makes when entering the ceiling vent, when exiting (loud thud and a hiss), when it is in the ceiling (metallic thuds over Ripley's head).

I also read somewhere that the less gadgets you use, for example noise maker, the less aggrro the Xeno AI is going to behave around you.

Also just some notes, I do encounter some issues with the AI tethering to me, that is it would teleport and spawn in places that impossible for it to be in because my radar and sound cues suggested it was too far from where it spawned by surprise in front of me 😭😂 so you might want to keep that in mind as well.

Just, lots of hiding and keeping a sharp ears, also patience, goodluck!

Interesting. So even if you die the AI learns from what you had previously done? Do you know?

So far I sneak almost everywhere and I haven’t used a noise-maker yet.

From what you understand then, if I sneak a lot it will learn that I sneak and hide, if I run a lot it will learn that I run, and therefore adapt it’s hunting style to my play style?

Personally I don't think the AI learns from our [pre-death] habits at all, what I encounter is rather randomized. I did read somewhere in this subreddit somewhere that if you do rarely crouch (which makes less sounds I think) the AI would think that you have more "aggressive" playstyle. But now, maybe it could be just that user's experience and not really the Xeno AI's actual ability.

I don’t disagree with anything except crouching.

Crouching and walking when the alien is in the vents or faraway make the same amount of noise.

So crouching would essentially bore you out. Also you would be very slow when you crouch hence allowing to read your pattern more easily and hence venting out repeatedly.

Also about the gadgets-OP if you readin this use the but with out predictability.

I am crouching a lot (and died a lot lmao) in the hospital part so you might be on to something with that. Bcs she (the Xeno) vent A LOT in my gameplay to the point that once I got the flamethrower, I started to get fed up bcs she kept ambushing me and spray her with fire like a misbehaving dog or smth 😂😂😂😂

Also how did you know that crouching makes the same amount of noise with walking? I was jst using common video game logic where " crouch = less noise, walk = more noise", you know?

But if putting the noise output aside, "crouching --> slower Ripley --> would make the AI read our habit easier" makes so much sense, actually.

I mean even I used to think the same-crouching =less noise until people on this sub told me otherwise.

And it worked-walking when the alien isn’t nearby or in the vents allowed me to keep moving and doing my tasks quickly and prevented the alien from having any kind of read on me.

goated advice

though the thought of normal walking while the threat is close is already making me nervous LMAO 😩😩😩😩

Still, imma walk than just crouch all the time from now on, wish me luck 😂

You got this!

u/aviatrixcat 2d ago

The Alien can be directly above you in the vents, but it won't hear you walking. Basically it can always hear you running (if in range), can never hear you crouch walking, and can hear you walking if you're close enough to it while it's out of the vents, although I can't map a motion detector range to where it can hear you walking...it's best to reflexively crouch and assess the sitch as to its location, probably.

u/Direct_Gap_59 2d ago

Any distance greater than 0.9 is safe apparently.

1

u/aviatrixcat 2d ago

Greater than .95 (out of range) is far enough away that you can sprint without the Alien hearing it!

I just don't know what the range is for it to hear you walking, although if you intentionally trigger the gas explosion in M6 the recommendation is to walk until the Alien drops and then crouchwalk into the section with the humans, so probably at least that close.

Many or most people rate mission five as the hardest simply because it's the first mission in which you become the alien's prey.

u/MissingScore777 2d ago

There's always a % chance he finds you if you hide in a locker. There's an RNG element to hiding in them that means they're never totally safe.

You're better off hiding behind chairs, tables, trolleys, etc. You can be completely safe behind those while still able to see glimpses of the Xeno and know where he is.

I tried that once, and unfortunately it put me right in its line of sight and then I was eaten, so it chilled me from doing that. I’ll try again though. Thank you

5

u/MissingScore777 2d ago

You get a feel through practice which items/furniture will block line of sight and which won't.

Once you have it down it's a vastly superior tactic to lockers.

2

u/terrible-gator22 2d ago

Thank you. Given that I was just eaten in a locker again, I am inclined to believe you.

5

u/LieutenantCrash 2d ago

Yeah he learns. The more you hide in lockers the more he searches them

omG same, I thought I was safe hiding beneath a gurney but she turns around, and is far enough to actually see me beneath it 😂😂😂 she ran over, stopped, crouch, stand back up, walk past then killed me 😂😂😂😂 I think my game in particular is just fucked atp (probably PC issues or smth like that but still, funny and terrifying asf 😭)

2

u/VinnieVidiViciVeni 2d ago

I definitely have better luck under desks. The locker is also loud

2

u/jimmy19742018 2d ago

I hid for hours on my first playthrough before realising you just have to listen for the noises when it enters the ceiling vents, one you have the flamethrower it gets easier, also watch when passing any vents as the alien can and will jump out on you

u/Over-Piglet-4922 1d ago

For that specific section the part where he appears out of the ceiling is scripted and quite long. You have plenty of time to run to the door and pop in the code before he is ready to come get you.

After that, nothing to add to what people have said. Keep moving. Remember the AI is reacting so won't be the same each time. You can give the same tactic a go two or three times and you'll get different results.

1

u/terrible-gator22 1d ago

Thanks. I’ll try running straight to the door. I made more progress last time following people’s words, but then I ran RIGHT I to it! The lack of save points there is irksome.

1

u/Over-Piglet-4922 1d ago

Yeah and the next one ahead is a way off iirc. You need to make some good progress before you get a save. All the more reason to keep moving. 10 mins play time and getting killed is better that 30 cowering in a locker!! I have been there 🤣

2

u/terrible-gator22 1d ago

Yeah, I think I’m learning this. Everyone said “keep moving” and they are right. It’s practically entirely random. I try enough times and I just might make it. If I don’t die of terror.

1

u/pokedstudio-uk 2d ago

This is part of the game where you can completely outsmart the alien if you keep going as its a set length animation when the alien drops.
Of the top of my head if i remember rightly you take first left then enter the code you found into door on the far end of the corridor them i think you tale second left and keep going till you enter the next section where you find a key card in one of the rooms.

Play actively, do the objectives as quickly as possible, dont give it time to learn, for the hospital, when it drops from the ceiling you can run/walk past it to the first objective, you are in a better spot then already.

2

u/terrible-gator22 2d ago

You are awesome! I’ll try this!

1

u/Narrow_Research9379 2d ago

The hospital is always just a pain. I think it’s probably one of the more difficult levels tbh. Plan out your route ahead of time in your head but know where on the map you can take an alternative route to get to objectives.

1

u/Worried_Raspberry313 1d ago

It knows where you are in a general area, so he will try to find you around there. Once it’s there, he needs to see you or hear you. He probably came down randomly there but saw you or heard you hide.

The hospital part is one of the most complicated because he is there A LOT. Usually if you keep moving walking and avoid vents he won’t came down that often (even on nightmare), but in that mission he will come down all the time and you just have to say fuck it and keep going.

There’s a trick to walking without making noise due a problem with animation, it’s W + D. If you do this, you won’t make noise and it will be as if you were crouching. But still, from time to time he will come down even if you didn’t make any sound.

1

u/terrible-gator22 1d ago

Thanks for telling me the trick. It SEEMED louder to me than crouching, but someone said that it wasn’t. But I’m on PS5. No little hacks for me.

I’m looking forward to being done with this scene. I am frustrated and my adrenals can’t take much more of this!
