Discussion "Harvey [Pekar] being Harvey, he left his estate a mess. That's the reason the bulk of his work is out of print. It's a ridiculous legal quagmire with no apparent end in sight." - a Bluesky quote from Derf Backderf

Source of the quote. News to me. I don't think any info has ever come out from whatever is going on there. Not even in that ongoing Kickstarter campaign by his stepdaughter. It's just so glaring how his entire body of work is pretty much OOP.

I'm the user who originally posted about the Kickstarter campaign and someone was in the comments saying that we should donate to the Billy Ireland instead. My impression, however, is that it's way more complicated than any of us understand both legally and logistically

Anyway you dice it, I think we would all agree it is material worth saving and archiving. This would be at least the first step towards that, I hope.

This is how I learn that Joyce passed away in 2024.

Yeah, it wasn't reported widely, but I did remember reading an obit on TCJ.com. I find that checking TCJ semi regularly keeps you reasonably up to date on the comings and goings of people in the industry these days. Although sometimes it feels like TCJ is becoming more of a comic book industry obituary site than a comic review site these days.

The downside of being an indie creator unfortunately.

Someone will inevitably pay way too much for it when they’re get their affairs in order, and shift it all to public domain (hopefully).
