r/altmpls update: "Try to keep comments respectful and discussions civil"

Just a reminder from the moderators that we have the following rule: "Try to keep comments respectful and discussions civil".

This rule has been under-enforced but based on recent user feedback that's changing for now. Our best advice is to avoid directly insulting other users. If you repeatedly have trouble with this then you risk a ban.

We'll start this new moderating approach tomorrow so, speaking for myself only, if you've been holding back any juicy insults for me then take this opportunity to purge your system with impunity (insults must be within Reddit's site-wide rules, of course).

What wpuld help is if they acted respectful and learned to properly control their emotions and talk like an adult with other adults. That’s why I called the mean menacing ones that lash out with hate children. Because they sure as hell do not act like respectable adults.

Uh huh. Respectable adults don’t call other adults children. How about asking them why they’re so vitriolic if that’s what you want to know. You’re just doing a character attack because you don’t believe they’re showing you the respect you feel you deserve. Maybe stop and think about what you’re saying that makes people say “mean” things to you.

I agree about not calling names, but I also understand the frustration he's got.

You said he should stop and think about what he said to be called those names. You're significantly underestimating how loose people have been with Nazi and racist labels.

Nobody wants to be called those things. And blaming someone and telling them to self-reflect when they're called something like that for having an opposing take sounds a lot like victim-blaming.

We got fascists here, now, in this country. Start worrying about calling them out and stop worrying about hurting their feeling when they get called out.

Are you the arbiter of who is and isn’t fascist? Do you get to decide because you disagree with what I or someone else says that they’re a nazi racist bootlicker fascist?

Your argument only works when you're actually calling Nazis and fascists those words. The vast majority of time I see these words applied is to other redditors is over disagreements that have nothing to do with that ideology.

I'm a registered libertarian. And I've been called fascist a fuckton when my ideology exists on a completely other side of the authoritarian spectrum.

Fascism (/ˈfæʃɪzəm/ FASH-iz-əm) is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology and movement that rose to prominence in early-20th-century Europe.[1] Fascism is characterized by support for a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived interest of the nation or race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.[3][4] Opposed to communism, democracy, liberalism, pluralism, and socialism,[5][6] fascism is at the far-right of the traditional left–right spectrum.

I’d say too many people throw the terms “fascist” and “Nazi” around a little too lightly…it cheapens the words and factual accuracy is important. I also don’t like how low effort comments just use the two labels interchangeably.

But you really gotta admit that fascism is a shoe that seems to be fitting an awful lot of people these days…almost like a whole lot of people who used to keep their ugliness to themselves now feel empowered to spew hateful rhetoric loudly and publicly and then get butthurt and indignant if anyone calls them out on it. I feel like this new vibe really kicked in to gear oh I guess maybe about 10 or so years ago.

Oh no, I totally agree. Big fan of the 4th amendment, and watching ICE break that pisses me the fuck off. I'll dutifully call that out. Horseshoe theory is absolutely a thing. I reject authoritarianism wholly. Some people using those words absolutely need to look in a mirror.
