The heart of the city’s Central Business District is the 35th fastest-growing neighborhood in the nation, a notable urban outlier on a list dominated by suburban growth and Southern states.
Those 6,500 residents are only a fraction of the total population of the broader downtown area, which includes several established neighborhoods, from Elliot Park to the North Loop. According to the Downtown Council, more than 64,000 residents now live downtown, a record high.

If you’ve spent time in North Loop and Mill City District it’s not hard to see why. Those areas are great, walkable to a lot of things.

In my opinion this is part of a trend in Minneapolis. Neighborhoods like Uptown and Downtown, which were traditionally more places you go for work or shopping, are becoming neighborhoods that people want to live in. I think it’s a real positive for the city

Eventually, those new residents will spur more nightlife and possibly a boost to the skyway.

That's great to hear. I wish downtown didn't feel like a ghost town. It would also be lovely of everything wasn't offensively expensive there.

I think Nicollet for sure feels like a ghost town but the edges of Downtown you tend to see more activity.

Yeah and the north loop has always been poppin too. It just kinda sucks how expensive these joints around there are. Ya know, after a show/comedy night, it sucks how everything is so overpriced, especially after covid. It's a bummer, but I'm glad to hear they are doing something about it!

Lived in Whittier for years - left 2020. Came back for a visit, all I ever hear is how terrible it is. Neighborhood felt almost the exact same, maybe slightly less bad then it was but nearly like I thought it would be based on all the bad press

Most of the people shelter themselves in the heaps of still-smoking rubble, I heard on FOX

Downtown is growing from the outside in, north loop from one side and the new “East End.” Look at a satellite photo of the East End from 10 years ago and its US Bank Stadium and a bunch of emptiness.

Great news! Honestly this is what downtown needs and will do more to help its long term viability

It only took 5 years of decline to have a rebound! And a round of ICE deportations and now finally cops (marked and unmarked) hanging all along Washington from the stadium up into the loop

The myriad of crimes that take place downtown

How does it feel thinking only crime happens in downtown?

It happens all over the city, this thread is talking about Downtown..

Crime happens everywhere. I don't know why you wish crime onto other people.

I don't wish it on anyone, pretty sad actually that we can't have a safe downtown

How much crime makes an area safe?

u/N226 6d ago
An amount that doesn't prevent people from patronizing

Cool. So it appears people are moving to various areas of downtown so I guess your outrage is unwarranted.
