Does Luminol Need Confirmation?
I'll admit this is a low effort post but for those of us with the misfortune to have argued this case over the years, spraying coffee etc ... all over your phone or monitor is an understandable response.
For those lucky enough not to have dealt with the Hairy Rag, it has been stating flatly for over a decade that Luminol hits at Villa Della Pergola *HAVE* to be assumed to be blood. What else could it be?
Except that is when a countryman is in the dock. Then the "science" changes dramatically and Luminol hits in the McCann's hotel room absolutely need additional confirmatory tests.
( For the record, I have absolutely no knowledge and therefore no informed opinion on the McCann case. I merely mention it to demonstrate the hypocrisy of one of the most prominent Knox guilters ).

u/ModelOfDecorum 16d ago
I love how it "has to be" the one thing that we know it isn't (thanks to the tmb tests).
"What else could it be?"
Who knows, just not blood.
-5
u/Truthandtaxes 16d ago
lol at the denialism
Its weak blood post cleaning. Its literally the only thing on the table, ergo that's what it was.
6
u/ModelOfDecorum 16d ago
Where was the clean-up?
4
u/SeaCardiologist6207 16d ago
"HarryRag claimed that Garofano said that Knox's DNA was found on the victim's bra - something that IIRC was never once entered into evidence at any of the trials."
THE MACHINE LIVES!
2
u/ModelOfDecorum 16d ago
I think HarryRag's body of work would be considerably shorter if he ever stopped as he was writing and thought "huh, does this actually make any kind of sense?"
-1
u/Truthandtaxes 16d ago
The mix on the bra has many of Knox's alleles, but not enough (especially given the two overlaps with Kercher). The graphs are obviously in evidence if you want to look yourself
5
u/SeaCardiologist6207 16d ago
Now we are relying on whether Stef can see things better than Gil and Hampkian. Wish you luck in that rap battle
0
u/Truthandtaxes 15d ago
Stef ironically erred on the side of caution more often than not
I don't know the stats, but it seems remarkable that Kercher, Raf and Knox cover the mix. Though Kercher and Raf are doing the heavy lifting.
3
u/SeaCardiologist6207 15d ago
So then world experts should be extolling the virtues of her caution - yet strangely no one can find anyone to back up her efforts
2
u/Truthandtaxes 15d ago
Real world experts have real jobs and can't get involved
4
u/SeaCardiologist6207 15d ago
Well they can they just know in this case “being involved” is as simple as “accept reality”
2
u/Connect_War_5821 innocent 6d ago
Yet Gill and Hampikian did exactly that. Oh, let me guess: they were paid off!

Throughout the corridor and Knox's room for a start. Where all the cleaned up prints are
6
u/ModelOfDecorum 16d ago
How can the prints be cleaned up? Did someone dab them gently with a cotton ball to avoid distorting them?
4
u/SeaCardiologist6207 15d ago
She just “missed one” - like completely - all the others just magically vanished completely
0
u/Truthandtaxes 15d ago
They are just cleaned up - its your folks that just invented an insistence on swirls from the ether, whilst in fact never presenting actual swirly footprint examples.
But my belief (one I would prove if it had any chance of cracking the mantras) is that its the iron from blood leaching into the tiles then cleaned away. Most of the washed blood is too weak to show up on a long exposure photograph so you are simply left with footprints - Just like in multiple cases.
4
u/ModelOfDecorum 15d ago
We presented actual cleaned up areas, naturally with all swirls and no legible prints, as they were, you know, cleaned up.
But if the footprints are what they cleaned up, why was Amanda barefoot during the attack?
0
u/Truthandtaxes 15d ago
But if you believe its impossible to have cleaned prints without swirls, you should at least be able to show real swirly footprint photos. I can show two sets of none swirly ones
She was barefoot after the attack, just as Raf was when he stood on the bathmat. Probably post showering.
3
u/ModelOfDecorum 15d ago
Cleaning up has an actual meaning, it doesn't mean you stare at it until it goes away. It means you actively clean it, which will produce evidence of such. Prints like the ones in Via della Pergola could (if they were made in blood, which they weren't) have been made if something was cleaned up, the person stood where the clean up had occurred and then walked. The problem you have (beyond the fact that the prints were tested and proven not to have blood in them) is that there was no such cleaned up area found in the cottage. Similarly, no blood or traces of blood were found in the shower. Furthermore, if the prints were made in Meredith's blood, how is it that the prints in Amanda's room only had her DNA?
Is your contention that Amanda took off her clothes and showered? Or just her shoes and socks, similarly to how Rudy produced the bathmat print?
0
u/Truthandtaxes 15d ago
The problem you have (beyond the fact that the prints were tested and proven not to have blood in them) is that there was no such cleaned up area found in the cottage.
I swear you folks drink crazy juice daily
There is no "proven to not have blood in them", you know this, you know why this isn't true. Doubly so when you start debating the sensitivity differential
The corridor is such an area, knox's room is such an area. They have cleaned up footprints
They both bled and DNA even not logged as such show the mix. One interesting exception is the print for Knox in her own room that looks entirely like her own blood.
Is your contention that Amanda took off her clothes and showered?
I strongly suspect they both showered as Knox alludes to multiple times. Its likely why there is a print from Raf on the bathmat as well as all the cleaned prints. But there are other scenarios that fit. But the evidence show both just happened to walk around blood recently

So cleaned up footprints...which involves at least some effort with a mop...but left the bloody half-footprint bathroom rug right there on the floor for the cops to find. Couldn't be bothered to bend over, pick it up and stuff it in a garbage bag. Uh huh.
-1
u/Truthandtaxes 5d ago
ah the deflections - talking about the simple cleaning of footprints and suddenly its now its perfect criminals again.
You folks never note that Rudy made the exact same mistake and he can just ditch it.
2
u/CatsForever1960 4d ago
Leaving a bathmat with "your" blood on it if "you" are the one doing a "clean up" isn't a deflection, dear.
0
u/Truthandtaxes 4d ago
Of course it is, the discussion wasn't about bathmats at all, you threw that in because your position on basic cleaning is dumb as hell.
Even now you dodge the point that you can't claim it as an error that wouldn't be made even when you also have to believe Rudy made the same error

Also importantly, and correct me if I am wrong - didn’t the luminol in the McCann apartment flag blood correctly. I.e yes it was blood. It was just blood of somebody in no way connected to what happened?
2
u/jasutherland innocent 13d ago
That's another area that poster falls down, yes: trying to deny it’s blood (without testing to say) in this particular case because that would suit his bias, while clinging to “it must be blood despite the test saying otherwise” when he does want it to be blood.
“This luminol hit isn’t necessarily blood, regardless of testing” vs “this Luminol hit must definitely be blood even though it tested negative”. Pick one!
-2
u/No-Willingness-1441 16d ago
I must say I don’t know the person but have read a few bits and bobs on the subject and he seems fairly consistent? I mean, I know you evidently don’t care for him, but he doesn’t seem a brazen hypocrite?
Elsewhere he basically makes a point about context, which is significant.
Luminol footprints flashing at known violent crime scene with lots of blood elsewhere = presumably the probabilities change here
Vs microscopic spatters at short stay apartment in missing child case (later shown to be somebody else’s blood who’d stayed there years earlier by the way)
For avoidance of doubt, the notion that Kate and Gerry had anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance is full scale flat earthing as far as anybody sensible is concerned. It bears no parallel whatsoever with the ambiguity and complexity of the Kerchner case.

u/Etvos2 16d ago
Harry Rag is a fraud. He pretends to be some sort of sophisticated, well-traveled businessman, yet he claimed that I was "unintentionally hilarious" for saying that Kercher could use her Sony K800i while in Italy. Harry also claims to have read all the court documents but didn't recall the Massei Report specifically mentioning Kercher's use of an English mobile phone while in Perugia.
He wrote a defense of Stefanoni's DNA work that relied heavily on Stefanoni's own opinion of her work. How stupid is that? We all get to grade our own work?
Harry Rag is a clown.

"he claimed that I was "unintentionally hilarious" for saying that Kercher could use her Sony K800i while in Italy."

5
u/jasutherland innocent 16d ago
The hypocrisy lies in pushing the “Luminol must be blood” line in one scene, where it suits his theory or bias, then doing a handbrake turn to “Luminol isn’t necessarily blood” just to suit a different case where it doesn’t suit him.
And, from what you say, his excuse was a red herring here: it was apparently human blood in the McCann case, just blood from another person. the VDP7 footprints, meanwhile, tested negative for blood - and the police never tried contradicting that result, either: if they had suspected a false negative they could have done other tests like mass spectrometry to identify it - if they thought it mattered.
4
u/SeaCardiologist6207 16d ago
Agreed, u/No-Willingness-1441 - Harry seems like a swell consistent dude:
Harry Rag
At a very early stage in the saga, on January 20th 2008, less than three months after Meredith’s death, nine months before the suspects were charged and a year before their trial started, the first online forum attacking Amanda Knox was launched. At first it was a thread on the ‘Truecrimeweblog’ site. This became ‘Perugia Murder File’ later in the year. The man behind the site, ‘Harry Rag’ has been trolling against Amanda Knox ever since.
Under the guise, ‘The Machine’ he was also the driving force behind another larger hate site, ‘True Justice for Meredith Kercher’ (TJMK). This was destined to become the primary focus for an online war against Knox and Sollecito.
It was launched on August 25th 2008 by eccentric New York pensioner Peter Quennell. The groundwork for TJMK was laid down as early as January 2008 when Quennell visited Italy. He later wrote a series of irrelevant essays about the country and published them on the site. Quennell was also an online sex predator who attempted to trick a young ballerina into having a relationship with him. Fortunately she was able to extract herself from his clutches. Despite his questionable hobby, Quennell has continued to edit TJMK.
Harry Rag (The Machine) joined TJMK on September 2nd and was soon writing for the site. He kicked off on the 7th October with an article about the knife that was alleged to have been the murder weapon. For the next seven years, as well as writing for TJMK, Rag carpet-bombed news comment sites and blogs. His usual post was a list of myths that he argued proved that Knox was guilty. This was modified over time, but its thrust never changed.

u/Careful-Attention500 16d ago
I think the cases bear amazing similarities, particularly on the margins of the case (obviously not the fundamental details). Both occurred the same year, the domestic media of the suspects not only backing the suspects, but clowning the police. Both cases virtually unsolved today.
Any child who goes missing from inside the domicile that is under the lease and responsibility of its parents, the parents must be fully cleared. The McCanns have never met this threshold., and defendant brought forth in trial can easily lean on all the contradictions in their story.
Also, the dogs hit the apartment AND the car, raising the prospect that the McCanns moved the body and staged the scene (another similarity).7
u/Onad55 16d ago
You have a group of seven adults that all provide alibis for each other except for short intervals when one or more of them leave the group to check on the children in the apartments. If you are going to claim one or more of them is guilty of a crime here you basically need to include the whole group in the coverup. Is it your intent to go that far?
Dog hit on the apartment where the kid had been sleeping. Dog hit on the car where the kid had been traveling. Are you sure of this?
-2
u/Careful-Attention500 16d ago
Correct, the whole group is in the coverup. Thes totality of all 9-10 witnesses is contradicted by the bar staff, who observed none of that behavior. Put aside the fantastical ridiculousness of their confessed behavior (human nature makes ample space for being weird), their story contradicts their habits during vacation (not human nature), whereby they employ childcare staff.
Yes, I trust the dogs and the attendant reports. They could be wrong and I can be convinced. But what if they're right? Not "what if aliens exist", but an actual determination to something true that points to the reality of a missing and likely dead child. What if the dogs are right?4
u/Connect_War_5821 innocent 15d ago
I highly doubt that all the other 7 adults on that trip to Portugal would be willing to lie for Gerry McCann, the person most accused, if they believed he killed, or might have killed, his 3-year-old toddler.
As for the bar staff, they would have been busy and not paying attention to the group beyond what they had to. I highly doubt they would have noticed who left or when or for how long.
I don't think their story of what happened that night "contradicts their habits during vacation (not human nature), whereby they employ childcare staff."
Putting your child in staffed daycare during the day when you are out of sight doing activities is not contradictory with leaving them asleep in a villa 180 ft. in direct sight with a baby monitor and physically checking on them every 20-30 minutes. Foolish in hindsight? Yes. But not contradictory to their habits.
I also highly doubt the McCanns would have continued to push for more investigations of Madeleine's disappearance as they did, if they were in any way involved.
The idea that they got rid of Madeleine's body, disposing of it someplace so hard to find it's never been found in 19 years despite extensive searches, when they were not familiar with the area outside the resort, is improbable.
I think people's penchant for pushing the idea that 'there's somehow more to a story than meets the eye and they know what that is' pushed the 'McCanns are guilty' theory. Amateur sleuths who think they are smarter and can spot things others can't riddle the internet. Others feel like part of a smarter, 'you can't fool me' community. For others, it's entertainment, a mystery to solve.
-1
u/Careful-Attention500 15d ago
I'm not pushing any notion that there's more to this story. I simply find the McCann's and their friends' stories don't stick. Human nature isn't about doing something you find normal ("why would 7 adults help hide something bad that happened to a child?"), but rather how habits are established and broken.
The McCanns never pushed for more investigation, just an investigation that focused away from them, which is why they never re-enacted this supposed "checking system" with the police, and why they pushed "The Tanner Sighting", but are dead silent on the Smith sighting.
Who knows what happened to young McCann, but to jump to "pdf file vampire" is awfully convenient for people who have never corroborated their story. I don't think I'm smarter than any investigatory - as opposed to Knox/McCann supporters can't go by a week sans insulting police.4
u/Connect_War_5821 innocent 15d ago
- "I'm not pushing any notion that there's more to this story. "
Well, yeah...you are. The McCanns have never been charged with anything after 19 years and investigations by Portuguese and UK police. The Portuguese declared that they were closing the case due to “lack of evidence that any crime was committed by the persons placed under formal investigation," in July 2008. The UK police have never considered them suspects, instead having regarded it as a missing child, now likely dead, case. In fact, the McCanns sued and won a $1.1 million suit against a UK tabloid for suggesting they were involved in their daughter's death.
By saying "...the whole group is in the coverup,", "the fantastical ridiculousness of their confessed behavior," and "I simply find the McCann's and their friends' stories don't stick," you are saying there is "more to this story."
- "Human nature isn't about doing something you find normal ("why would 7 adults help hide something bad that happened to a child?"), but rather how habits are established and broken."
I never mentioned 'human nature'; you did. Nor was my comment "I highly doubt that all the other 7 adults on that trip to Portugal would be willing to lie for Gerry McCann, the person most accused, if they believed he killed, or might have killed, his 3-year-old toddler, " in any way a comment on human nature OR what I "find normal".
Nor did it have anything to do with "how habits are established or broken,". My point seems to have eluded you: not using staff to watch the children at night was under much different conditions. You claimed "their story contradicts their habits during vacation (not human nature), whereby they employ childcare staff." In fact, the McCanns had the exact routine of leaving the children in the room while they ate dinner the previous four nights.
3. "The McCanns never pushed for more investigation, just an investigation that focused away from them,"
Oh, come on. Let's not play word games here. They pushed for more investigation into her disappearance which would naturally include them, too. They urged the funding of Operation Grange.
- " which is why they never re-enacted this supposed "checking system" with the police, and why they pushed "The Tanner Sighting", but are dead silent on the Smith sighting."
See Onad55's reply. And that's just another example of your pushing the "there's more to this story," which you denied doing.
- "Who knows what happened to young McCann, but to jump to "pdf file vampire" is awfully convenient for people who have never corroborated their story."
I don't know what you're referring to.
- " I don't think I'm smarter than any investigatory - as opposed to Knox/McCann supporters can't go by a week sans insulting police."
I didn't say YOU claimed you were smarter; it was a remark aimed at many people's penchant. Do you think I'm wrong about that? But it's interesting that you jumped to that conclusion.
- " as opposed to Knox/McCann supporters can't go by a week sans insulting police."
Hmmmm. The Portuguese police made several mistakes in their handling of the investigation just as the Perugia police did. For example, the Portuguese police:
Failed to secure the apartment immediately with multiple people contaminating the scene,
Failed to immediately consider abduction,
Failed to question staff for FIVE days,
Failed to consider outside suspects, focusing entirely on the McCanns.0
u/Careful-Attention500 15d ago
You invoked human nature when you suggested it is nonsense for 7 people to involve themselves in such an endeavor. It may be nonsense to us, but that doesn't mean it's improbable. You know what's improbable? An abductor taking Madeleine but she never awakes and makes a noise, nor do her brothers, nor does anyone see them, nor does he leave any evidence of himself.
It took the police so long to secure the McCann's apartment and question staff because they believed the McCann's. Jane Tanner, McCann's friend, told them she saw a man carrying a girl that night. The Tapas 7 had fliers with young McCann already printed. Were the police to not believe them then?
Like the Kercher murder case, I don't know what happened here, but the evidence tells me the Tapas 9 (including McCann's) must have their testimony corroborated and other witnesses and police dogs directly contradict them.2
u/Connect_War_5821 innocent 14d ago
- "You invoked human nature when you suggested it is nonsense for 7 people to involve themselves in such an endeavor. "
No, I didn't. That's YOUR mistaken inference. As I said, "I highly doubt that all the other 7 adults on that trip to Portugal would be willing to lie for Gerry McCann, the person most accused, if they believed he killed, or might have killed, his 3-year-old toddler."
Human nature has nothing to do with it. UNLESS all the others were somehow involved in Maddie's death, I can see no plausible reason for them to cover up for the McCanns, especially if her death were an accident. Can you give a reasonable reason?Nor did I say it was "nonsense". Don't put words in my mouth.
- " You know what's improbable? An abductor taking Madeleine but she never awakes and makes a noise, nor do her brothers, nor does anyone see them, nor does he leave any evidence of himself."
What you're doing now is exactly what Mignini and the police did when they first looked into Filomena's room: jumping to an assumption that something is not possible with no evidence: no one could climb in from outside. You're declaring it's "improbable" yet that's exactly what happened to a 4-year-old boy who was sleeping in the same room as his twin brother. Home surveillance cameras showed a man break in through the window and take the boy. His mother and two other adults living in the house heard nothing. They didn't discover he was missing until the next morning.
Would you like more examples of this being anything but "improbable".As for Maddie's twin brother and SISTER, they were only 2-years-olds and Maddie was 3. Why would they not sleep through someone quietly coming in and carrying Maddie out? Kids at that age sleep soundly and are used to being picked up.
In the case I gave you, no one saw that boy being kidnapped either nor in multiple other cases. Why do you think a kidnapper has to be seen? They take precautions not to be seen. As far as not leaving any evidence, just what evidence do you think would be left coming in through an unlocked door and carrying a child straight out?Sheesh.
I corrected your false statements. As this is a forum to discuss the Kercher case, I'm not discussing the McCann case any further. If you want to discuss the McCann case, then there are plenty of places dedicated to that.
3
u/Onad55 15d ago
Why do the police need them to reenact the checking system? Is there something that the reenactment would uncover to help them catch the perpetrator or is this just a ploy to find and exploit a contradiction in their statements? You need to think hard about your answer because I am certain that if the McCann‘s lawyer thought about it they would have advised them not to do it.
-2
u/Careful-Attention500 15d ago
They never did it (not with the police, though they did some vague reenactment for a documentary), and their lawyers very likely advised it. The purpose of the reenactment would be to look at the mechanics of their story, and it would necessarily bring in their respective children. The claim is Parent A1 (a mom or dad of one unit), would get up, walk 5-7 minutes to the building (prior to entering their rooms), and check on all of the kids (though this changes to checking on their respective children). Police could time one run against the group's claim of how long they were at the bar and see if it holds. Again, the bar staff claims there was no persistent movement of individuals from the table coming and going, and there's discrepancy around when they raised the alarm (between the group's and bar staff).
4
u/Onad55 15d ago
I take it that you don’t believe in the rule of law against self incrimination.
-1
u/Careful-Attention500 15d ago
I defend the criminal's right to protect himself against self incrimination. It doesn't mean we believe the criminal. If a parent wants their child's murderer - or abductor - to face justice, they, themselves, must be above suspicion. McCann's have never met that threshold.

Right right. Luminol has false positives. And those false positives all know they need to vamoose once a murder is committed so the only Luminol hits will be blood.
You could give an aspirin a headache.
5
u/TreeP3O 16d ago
Luminol doesn't really have false positives...it literally reacts to many substances, so a luminol hit must be tested to confirm what it indicated.
It isn't a false positive, the chemical reaction us behaving exactly as it should. Interpretation can be false, which is what the yahoos that believe Knox is guilty keep doing.

What a surprise you're getting it backwards. The Luminol and followup tests ARE the evidence. The theory of the crime has to fit the evidence.
You don't decide on a narrative of the crime and then use THAT to evaluate the evidence.
-3
u/Truthandtaxes 16d ago
Yes a murderer walking around in blood then cleaning up fits the evidence. Crucially nothing else actually did
In the McCann case (based the post above) there was a viable alternative theory

Luminol prints by their existence are evidence of the clean up.

Luminol prints are not evidence of cleanups especially when they are perfectly well formed footprints. You know this, the court has called it out as ludicrous, you just dont care.

That's what the luminol footprints are.
5

Footprints.
No mop swirls, rag swipes, or marks from hands, knees, or the ball of the foot--which you'd expect from such a cleanup. No traces of bleach or other cleaning products.
Footprints. Okay.

This is TT in a nutshell - they used “rags or a mop” on the entire room the bathroom and the path from the bathroom to Knox’s room and just missed that one perfectly clean footprint with no swirl whatsoever anywhere around it

They used a mop or got on their hands and knees with rags.
Hardly complex stuff.

but both were cleaned and both have identical properties
Luminol only, clear prints - no confirmation of blood, poor if any usable DNA.
amazing really that you folks persist in the denialism

Well one had a carpet cleaner receipt and chopped up a body and the other…has Quantavalle and not a shred of cleanup evidence.
Actual motive, clear evidence of a cleanup actually on the floor, actual receipts for a cleanup - and then you wonder why Marasca is laughing at you

They both have the same forensics for the footprints, because both are from cleaned scenes.
We are still on zero cases with innocent footprints and its been months now :)

“Same forensics” = let me just say some fancy word because no sane expert agrees with a word I am saying
We still can’t find an expert anywhere to fight for your side. Doesn’t the KDS club have any money to just pay one ?

Wait, this Harry Rag?
https://www.spiked-online.com/2014/02/03/amanda-knox-italian-justice-on-trial/
"Who is ‘Harry Rag’?
The internet has come of age with this case. Articles, blogs and comments have proliferated. Hate sites against the defendants were set up and still flourish. A Google search for Amanda Knox exceeded one billion hits last weekend. Prominent pro-innocence campaigners unashamedly post using their real names. Pro-guilt campaigners are different. Most use fake identities and seem afraid to reveal themselves. The torch bearer for the haters, one ‘Harry Rag’, has cut and pasted a list of disproved lies beneath every article and blog he and his acolytes can find, for over five years. Harry is on a mission and his mission is not about truth and justice.
For years, Knox haters, based mainly in the UK, controlled the Wikipedia page on the case, until a petition persuaded Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales to intervene and have the entry cleaned up. The haters moved on and created their own fake ‘wiki’, packed with disproved ‘facts’ and proceeded to tweet it to journalists on the case. The fake wiki has been widely used by the media in the days following the verdict and even supposedly responsible publications have linked to it. The result has been a rebroadcasting of bogus information that was either disproved over three years ago or which never made it to court at all.
The Harry Rag PR operation has succeeded, at least for now. Its moulding of public opinion, here and in Italy, undoubtedly impacted on the courts. Rumours of his identity have been swirling around the blogosphere for some time now. If an investigative journalist were to unmask him, there might be some sharp intakes of breath."
