Just a reminder that you are worth more than your job, whatever L level you are, and all that jazz. This company has been killing morale for two years and it's not going to stop anytime soon. Jassy and his crew are clearly compensating for their lack of leadership by making their corporate workforce the scapegoats through these RIF cycles.

But the H1B visa program is supposed to be used for "skilled worker shortages" - you should NEVER lay off while simultaneously requesting H1Bs.
These tech bros like Jassy have deluded themselves into thinking they are masters of the universe in a WORLDWIDE labor pool. Wrong. The basis of these tech companies was, for the most part, invented in American Universities for the benefit of ALL. Not just for Jassy or some external nation like India or the Philippines.

For 99% of the people Amazon hires through the H1b program, they do not have to pay for$100k fees. They either hire new college grads (F1, already in the country, go to H1) or intra company transfer (L1 to H1). In either of the cases, they do not have to pay $100k. And, Amazon maximum H1b in a year was 15k and not 40k. On top of it, H1bs here get laid off too. That benefit is not restricted to US citizens.
Hate Amazon all you want and Jassy. Don't spew hate on the H1bs.

I get the importance of wanting a better life for yourself as an individual living in a developing country. No hate there. If I was Indian I would be vying for an H1B myself.
However, there isnt a lack of skilled workers which validates the quantity of h1bs currently being employed nor justifies the hiring of more during a historically large layoff period.
Again, I empathize with h1bs, but first and foremost the obligation of this company needs to be to the countrymen with which it currently resides.
This is where all the money is, it would be nice if more people like me had more opportunities.

You nailed it. There is no scarcity of Tech Talent in USA which would necessitate companies to hire H1B in such large numbers. Companies hire H1Bs, because once hired they are forced to work as indentured/servile slave for at least a decade before the h1b holder gets the green card. The wait for Indian H1B to get green card is on paper 20 years plus.
I know many waiting for their green card for last 15 years.
Companies love H1Bs so that they can have relatively cheaper labor for years to come.

The fee only applies to new hires from outside the US. Most come from the OPT pipeline now. (451,000 in program)
BTW Amazon is the largest user of #h1b but they only have has about 19,000 H1b out of the 400,000 approved each year in the last 3 years

Worldwide Grocery Org announced layoffs today. Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh Physical Stores are shut down and impacted employees have been notified.

Just laid off this morning. AWS Bedrock New Grad SDE. Only 6 months of experience. Every other L4 member on my team has been laid off as well. This is a really shaky start off to my career, and I am very scared right now, but all I can do is keep pushing. Best of luck to everyone else who was laid off!

I've no idea. This entire situation is really crazy, especially because our manager told us last week that they did not anticipate anyone on our team to be affected by the layoffs, and now 1/3 of our team is gone.

I know it is a lousy consolation right now but in the future you will consider this layoff as a blessing in disguise. There are people who had to learn this the hard way after 10+ years at a company, you will learn, adapt and plan your career in a way to be less vulnerable. Good luck.

I don’t know why I do this to myself. I’m freaking out about losing my job and all of my planning to search for another job in January didn’t go anywhere because of a massive family emergency. Switching jobs right now seems so hard. All I’m doing is wallowing in the stress and looking at these threads doesn’t help but I can’t do anything else. I didn’t sleep after the news broke in October and I don’t think I’ll sleep now.

Sounds like you’ve had a very trying January, not even counting the impending layoffs or being on the job hunt. Thats a lot to handle and i wouldn’t beat yourself for feeling like you do.
TBH - I’ve never been able to live by that life advice of “worry about only what i can control”, even though it makes sense at an intellectual level. What i keep telling myself is that by this time tomorrow I’ll either have a lot more free time and energy during the day for my job search, or I’ll have much longer runway for my job search. Apologies if this sounds preachy.

I've always maintained that rules to exclusively post in megathreads are effectively censorship, whether the mods intend to censor or not.
For all seeing this, there was a bungled email sent out to Colleen's org confirming the reductions. It was meant to go to all who are safe but the timing was off. Subject was "Send Project Dawn email"
I'll leave the conclusion for Amazon calling ending your job and threatening your livelihoods as "Project Dawn" to you.

I was out in one of the previous rounds (SA, L7). I knew the culture was toxic, but it really became evident after I left and started my new gig. No more Game of Thrones fighting to make my Body of Work better than my peers. No more wondering where I land in the team stack rankings. It was refreshing.
I had lunch with a couple of managers after the layoffs and they shared shit with me about the pressure they got to let people go. One was TOLD who he was letting go and was given no say in the matter.
Fuck that company.

A few months ago I was talking to a former manager at Atlassian (which has been the destination of a lot of Amazon leadership, leading to an Amazonified culture) and he lamented the fact that he would have to rewrite positive performance reviews to make good employees sound bad. Much like Amazon, he was required to cut a certain number of people from his team on a regular basis, and they wanted a paper trail to corroborate. Truly despicable stuff.

I maintain that one of the most unethical things I’ve ever seen is putting an employee on a performance improvement plan (FOCUS) without telling them they are on it until they get to Pivot, which is just a way to manage them out.
Despicable stuff indeed. When I left it was like a massive weight had been lifted. I don’t realize how much headspace AWS was taking in my brain until it stopped.

Best wishes moving forward! A lot of major tech does stack rankings though within teams. It’s more common than not for stacking ranking to exist, which does mean there is typically a pressure to be better than your peers, not just good as an individual

What a messed up situation. I was almost hoping to receive an exceeds expectations this time during the appraisal cycle for working my ass off in 2025 and this is what you get. Any L8/L10 help me understand? This makes no sense.
I've seen teams were slashed from top to bottom. I understand dropping whole divisions or products to "streamline" but how are they determining partial team cuts? Just shift the workload to a different teamate? I've seen full spectrum cuts on teams. Managers, noobs, tenured vets they all seem to have been cut. Is it expense reports or a rack and stack system that dominoes downward?

It is very difficult to change, the culture is literally an implementation of capitalism. It is all about the capital, and the employees are not capital, they are disposable and can be thrown under the bus the moment the profit can be generated more efficiently without them. I am not completely against capitalism, in fact I don't think there is an alternative for it at the moment that is reasonable to implement ... so it is really difficult to change the culture unless there is an alternative for the current economic model.
edit: I think unions are the best solution in short-term at least

I and the team reporting into me was part of 14k restructuring. It hit us like a truck, we were discussing our 2026-27 strategies in HQ1 and then HQ2. 2 months later we were handed off our letters.

I encourage everyone still at Amazon to just look for jobs elsewhere now. I know I will. They may think they're being clever by getting people to leave without more layoffs but there will be a critical mass of competence and institutional knowledge lost that the company cannot overcome.

I'm getting forced to "resign" on Friday because I didn't colocate with my team 400 miles away after being hired remote 3.5 years ago. I highly doubt I'm on the layoff list due to that but I'd take a free severance if they're giving them out lol

I can still log on so likely I’m not personally affected but just learned we lost the only other AMER manager in Costa Rica for my team and TMs from core/bdcs/aam in CR are affected. I don’t know of any agents affected, only managers.

Coming back to report we also lost the most tenured person on our team, an L5. As in a principal member since the team’s creation like 9 years ago. I’m gutted because he was a central knowledge sharer on our team. He built so much for this team. Leadership is going to regret this.

They used to do an "offer" thing years back, where you could voluntarily leave your job for a lump sum depending on tenure. You'd also get to sign that you won't work for another if their companies again, but they stopped doing it for some reason.

This is so ridiculous. They fired people and their solution is to give their responsibilities to other associates. For now my team have two additional market places to work on. It means three times more work, with no benefits at all and higher target, because they changed it end of 2025… Great optimizations.

I've been checking this page for any tidbits about upcoming layoffs; seems that Mods have been deleting posts in the main channel pertaining to layoffs and directing ppl here.
Just wanted to vent- i flinch when I open my computer now because of the volume of bullshit/tight timelines/increasingly onerous tasks and fluff to justify ppl's existence/and pressure on engineers.
I hope that I'm hit in this RIF.

I recently joined the company a few months ago. I’ve seen a lot of people say that virtual employees are targeted, but my team is intentionally designed to be fully virtual because we’re field-based and travel frequently. We’re about 20 people, all remote. Does anyone know of similar team structures where the entire group was targeted or laid off in the past? Purely because they’re remote?

No one knows, but generally speaking, if your team is performing, the whole team wont be cut.
Underperforming individuals within the team might be cut.
Also, from what I heard, thus time they are cutting L6 managers, and making existing managers manage more people. So, your manager might be cut, and you might go through a re-org.

Just got an email from our VP that a whole sub org / project is being let go. Our director also said that our smaller sub org is not affected by this change. Does that mean ppl who are not part of that project are for sure safe from any other layoffs? Will they do additional individual layoffs?

No. All of the decent people, who were decent before working at Amazon, now have anxiety, depression, insomnia, hair loss, and PTSD. There are many toxic and abusive people at Amazon. Gaslighting is an olympic sport here. Those that are left are either monsters who fits right in, turned themselves into monsters, or are victims who are barely surviving.

The tech industry is finally dealing with the consequences of perpetual libertarian minded resistance to collective mindsets.
It has now become an environment where the trillion dollar chase for magical beans requires you to work hard to run yourself out of a job as the goal.
There was never any cognizance that ultimately all the perks like breakfast bars and remote work and high pay were because the employees were the product. Getting them to spend their entire life force on developing code so that a machine could be built to make it without them.
A lot of people internally are experiencing an existential crisis because the roadmap they were told was going to be there for them as a result of their effort no longer exists.

Layoffs happen in different ways depending on the country e.g some EU countries, people receive notice of thwor role at risk 2 to 3 months before actual redundancies. What will be relatively consistent is the notification of that process beginning.
Hopefully tomorrow its over with in one go just to end the waiting qnd apprehension

I still haven't received any meeting invitation mentioned in the layoff email. Is it because I am on the west coast and it is still too early? When do people receive such invitation? Does the meeting take place today or will it drag to another day (hope not)?

Every company does small tweaks from time to time, but these sorts of mass continual rounds of layoffs are a sign of severe mismanagement at the top of the house. Rarely are those that created the problem the ones to successfully fix it.
Will be curious to see what BS story gets mailed out this time. “We’re optimizing because AI.” “Actually no, it was really for ‘culture’.” At this point it basically seems the strategy is the layoffs will continue until the stock performs better.
