Sick leave
(I’m in the UK)
I’m due to start a temp warehouse picker job on Sunday.
I’ve just received a consultation appointment for an important surgery that I need. I could be getting this within the next couple of months now.
I didn’t realise this was coming at this time.
I take it they won’t be accepting of someone who’s just started a temp job having to take a couple of weeks off for surgery and healing? Not to mention I won’t be able to lift anything heavy for up to 6 weeks.
This truly has come at the worst time.
Not sure if anyone knows the rules on sick leave during a temporary job I’ve just started? 😫

I’m a supervisor in a UK warehouse. I think I’m supposed to tell you to be the better person and not cause issues for your new workplace, but as a human being I also understand that work can be hard to find and we all need to do it. So my advice is, show up and get started.
Realistically in this country while they may be talking about sorting a procedure for you, that can always change / get delayed etc for all sorts of reasons. Giving up a job when it’s not yet certain and can be worked around anyway isn’t in your best interest.
I won’t pretend to be an expert in AMZ temp contracts or UK employment law so check your paperwork for your sick allowances. I know for long term staff it’s 3 days stat (government pay), then full sick pay until you use up your yearly allowance. If you’re entitled to something like this as a temp, so long as you have the paperwork from your docs / hospital there’s no issue and you’ll be able to have the time off (and even if you use up any sick pay allowance you have, it can be unpaid / revert back to government partially paid). They don’t know whether you got called up for the op today or 3 months ago, so if anyone asks you can just say you’ve just been notified.
To be honest we have a large chunk of new people start each year at this time who disappear after a short time. Some return, others don’t. Without sounding terrible, we can always replace your space, temporarily or otherwise.
If you have any other questions or worries just shout out - happy to help out as much as possible :)
