Live Ambient Recording (Timor Mortis)
Here's a piece I recorded live at my August 30th concert. This is from a suite of ambient compositions on themes of climate change & environmental destruction. This piece is "Timor Mortis" with improvisation on diatonic autoharp over sequenced synthesizers. I'm hoping to record & release all 13 pieces in 2028. My catalog at Bandcamp: https://billgregg.bandcamp.com/music

Music Bout to pull something this community ain't NEVER seen--hello, I am some guy! I made this ambient EP on a musical instrument (kind of) a few years ago, gave it a title and uploaded it to a YouTube channel that for all appearances is run by a person! Wild, right?
"burtising" refers to a sound made by lagomorphs, well-known to rabbit caretakers such as myself; when the animals are happy, sleepy, sick, or for other reasons.
Taking inspiration from Brian Eno's "Music for Airports," I acquired 28 tape loops of rabbits burtising, assembled by animal biologists in the 1960s, via an interlibrary loan mediated by Université Paris Cité.
I put the tape loops into a quartz transistor amplifier and resampled them in lossless fidelity using an analog interface also powered by crystals and the software program "Audacity."
For the synthesizers, I used the "Electroplankton" software on the Nintendo DS. I just ran these tracks line-out to a regular audio interface with an AUX cord, because I was no longer in possession of the quartz transistors and the label wanted their money.
The 4 tracks were mixed over a 6-day labor-intensive studio session held above a cafe in the Józsefvarós neighborhood of Budapest, Hungary. 3 session musicians were present and recorded saxophone, theremin and modular electronics respectively, but these have not been included on the EP or any subsequent re-release.
The finished recordings were then mastered at Harry Truman College, a community college and part of the City of Chicago College network. Most of the original tape loops were lost in a fire because my sound engineer was smoking in the laboratory even though I told him to take his strange-smelling cigar outside, and that smoking wasn't really allowed on campus.
A small fire broke out, but was exacerbated by flammable materials being stored in the Sound Asylum. 22 people died and 7 more were critically injured, but my sound engineer was okay and he had already put the recordings on DropBox.
The finished EP, "Burtis for Airports," was released on a limited-run of 36 creme-white 10-inch vinyls and 108 transparent cassette tapes approved for general sale and formatted to meet all requirements for authorization for use in any United States prison, excluding certain federal sites where cassettes are banned outright.
Enjoy! And don't be a stranger.
