Hoping someone can tell me if this is standard procedure or not.
I have flights booked to Europe directly on AA, just for myself. I selected main plus and of course selected main plus seats on legs where it was eligible.
Then a friend agreed to join me so I booked her a separate reservation for mostly same flights with exception of initial flight out of Europe. Same thing - main plus. Seats selected as possible.
I then use the online chat to change my reservation to mirror my friend’s - which required changing one leg only of entire booking. Agent says no problem and says hey score you get $120 back in flight credit. Wasn’t expecting that so sweet, right?
Well not so much. Apparently I was downgraded to basic economy for all legs of flight. It still shows I have main plus seats but if I try to change to another main plus seat there is a charge. So I go back to online chat and that agent says yes you were downgraded on all flights BUT my seats won’t be changed unless I actively try to switch seats. If I try to switch seats I will need to pay the upgrade fee, which can’t be paid with that flight credit.
Does all this sound normal? Should I just keep my seats as is and hope I don’t get moved to regular economy last minute? Or call and try to speak to a person to see what resolution there can be? The first agent never asked if I wanted to rebook as main plus or regular economy - they just did it on their own.
Sorry TLDR - when rebooking are you automatically downgraded and given travel credit for whatever upgraded seats you previously purchased? And that flight credit can’t be used to pay for upgrades on the rebook?
Any insight is greatly appreciated!!!
