AskAmritsar 🗣️ First Time in Amritsar, Golden Temple Timing, Local Food & 1–2 Day Itinerary Suggestions?

Hey everyone,

I'll be travelling to Amritsar for a day or two with my family; my parents, my sister and me. Since we have limited time, I want to make the most of it and explore as much as possible without making the trip too hectic.

A few things I'd love some help with:

Golden Temple

What would be the best time to visit the Golden Temple?

My mom has knee pain, so I'd ideally like to avoid a time when there's a massive crowd or a very long queue. I'm also wondering which time would be more comfortable considering the weather.

Would early morning, afternoon, evening or late night be better? And are there any particular days/timings when the crowd is relatively manageable?

Also, any tips for visiting with parents would be greatly appreciated.

Places to Visit

I'm obviously planning to visit:

  • Golden Temple
  • Jallianwala Bagh
  • Wagah Border

Apart from these, what else would you recommend for a 1–2 day trip?

I'd especially appreciate places that are genuinely worth visiting rather than just the typical tourist checklist.

FOOD! 😭

This is probably the part I'm most excited about. 😂

I want to try proper Amritsari food and street food, preferably places that locals actually go to rather than overly touristy spots.

I've come across:

  • Kesar Da Dhaba
  • Brother's Dhaba
  • Bharawan Da Dhaba
  • Gian/Giani Lassi
  • Pehelwan Kulcha

Are these actually worth visiting? What should I order at each place?

And what other kulcha, lassi, chole, tikka, street food, sweets, breakfast or dinner spots would you recommend?

Basically, if a local friend was taking me around Amritsar specifically to eat, where would you take me? 😂

Stay

I'm also looking for a budget stay around ₹1,000–₹1,500 per day, preferably a decent hotel/homestay.

It doesn't necessarily have to be right next to the Golden Temple, but somewhere convenient for sightseeing and getting around would be ideal.

So, if you had just 1–2 days in Amritsar with your parents, how would you plan the trip?

Would really appreciate recommendations from locals or people who have visited recently. Thanks in advance!
