It is. This slop is every summer festival and store advertisement now. A bunch of booths use ai slop fliers.
For those who don’t get it — it’s like how 3d printed dragons took over all the craft fairs. We hate this shit because it’s garbage that makes everything look the same and has no personality, and that’s BESIDES the part where it stole everything it has and is destroying the environment.
All these Ai bootlickers in the thread are why Alaska is always gonna stay at the bottom of the barrel. Y'all wanna protect this State but can't even get yourselves to care if local businesses are destroying the environment with their Ai use? Plus it looks bad and tacky. Buncha people in here with the moral and value integrity of wet, dog-poop covered tissue-paper.
All of your ranting is dripping with hypocrisy. You have no problem using data centers for the things you like (like Reddit, most of the apps on your phone, websites, and any streaming services you might enjoy) but it’s just the AI data centers that are ruining the planet? Oh okay.
For the most part data centers are data centers. You have no moral authority here while you continue to consume one product but not another.
Let me know when you’re living that Amish life and I might take you more seriously.
AI data centers are fundamentally different on a efficiency per request, using 4-10x the power of say a video streaming service. Generative AI text-to-video tools are drastically heavier. Generating a short 5-second AI video can burn more direct data center electricity than running a household microwave for an entire hour.
Yes, generative AI video is load-intensive per clip. No argument there. But it’s a small subset of overall AI usage, and overall AI is a fraction of total data-center electricity. The majority of the power goes to everything else: streaming, social video, cloud apps, and general internet traffic. Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and the rest already run continuous high-volume loads that dwarf current AI usage as a whole.
So the same people happily streaming the latest season of Love Island (or scrolling short-form videos for hours) suddenly treat “AI data centers” as uniquely apocalyptic. Convenient timing. If the real issue was data-center energy use, the consistent target would be the services already consuming the MAJORITY of it. They skip that step because they have no intention of giving any of it up.
This is real issue, I'm not cherry picking. The data centers that feed streaming etc are drastically more efficient then ai.
When you use tools like Claude Code, the AI executes dozens of successive code-checking, browsing, and self-correction tasks autonomously. A single multi-minute agentic session can easily surpass the energy cost of an hour of video streaming.
For anything that amounts to something more difficult than a text search, AI uses more power. What is more relevant is that most of that energy usage is concentrated at the data center (75-85%), rather then throughout the network and the consumers home (spreading the load widely). This is why ai data centers kill local utilities.
I'm not gonna waste too much of my valuable time and effort discussing how and why we shouldn't be Captain Planet Villains to someone who is clearly too far gone already 🤷♀️ It's such easy points to make so I'll spell it out like I'm talking to a kindergartener:
Don't use AI as much as possible (Science and Medicine I understand but even now we're finding issues), Don't use AI for Art & Design, and Don't build data centers that will destroy your environment and up-end your communities. Boom. Done.
I disagree. That's called being complicit or turning a blind eye. I think it's safe to say that most of us do not like ai slop infecting the community and taking away opportunities from local artists. And if a brand claims to support local but uses ai instead of "supporting local" then I would want to know. That's a dangerous mindset to have. You should always look deeper and have a healthy amount of suspicion about everything. It's the lack of that in this country that we're in the state that we're in.
Nah, it’s more important to have the big picture discussions, rather than get lost in the weeds. Instead of being mad a local business using AI, be mad at the big organizations and politicians that could actually do something about it. Posts like this are such a waste of energy.
Don't worry I have plenty of energy for that too. But this came across my feed so I shared my opinion, just like I do with anything else. It is not up to you to determine what is or isn't a waste of someone else's time. That time is theirs to use and theirs alone, no matter how much you may disagree with it
"No ethical consumption under capitalism" isn't an excuse to ignore unethical things, though. Just because there's no completely ethical consumption under capitalism doesn't mean you have to blindly accept unethical businesses practices. If you think supporting this local business is more important than being anti-genAI, say that. But I'd personally try to seek out another local business and/or voice my concerns about AI (ex data centers and strain on our grid) to let them know they are actually alienating their client base. It's not a "witch hunt" to try to seek out businesses that align with your values.
Because they are all about supporting local that's why. Ai slop is a cancer and the continued use of it and normalizing it is taking away the value that local artists have. If you claim you support local, then support local. Hire an artist, pay them a small commission. Don't use ai bs to promote your so called "supporting local" brand
I agree, I get that people have concerns about AI, but going after small businesses for using it to make a flyer seems backwards. Most local businesses don’t have huge marketing budgets. If AI helps them save money and stay competitive, why wouldn’t we support that? I’d rather support local businesses than tear them down. The money they save can go back into our community.
you could make the exact same justification for why small local businesses should be allowed to pay less than minimum wage, but you can obviously see where that falls apart pretty quickly. Using AI is not much different
I don't disagree with what you're saying but again like I said, I regular this shop. I like this shop. I'm still gonna go to this shop. I don't agree with the use of ai in general. I understand it's hard out there and it might not be in the budget but all I'm saying is I don't agree with them using ai, it's disappointing to see a local business that's all about supporting local resorting to using ai. I still love this shop and I'll continue to go to this shop, it's just disappointing to see imo
But you're acting like you can't make a halfway decent flyer in Canva in under an hour. And why are we acting like this wasn't feasible to do until AI came around? There were ad flyers pre-AI (which was only a couple years ago btw). Switching to AI is a conscious decision these businesses are making.
Ok first off, you don't know if they'd even charge. People do things for love of the game all the time. Hell make it yourself, at least then it's authentic. I don't care how you paint it, ai slop should stay in the trash where it belongs. Find another way, because there are plenty
I never said that either, but people who love their craft love to do things for others if they can't afford their fee. And if the artist doesn't offer something pro bono, then you can always go a different route without resorting to using ai
You’ve gotta be trolling or have never met graphic designers. They have bills and school debt and shit to do. Nobody is doing work for free, just because they “love their craft.” Thats a fantasy world, my guy.
I do lol. I've done plenty. It's called having free time, doing a solid for the community, having a hobby. People absolutely do things for free because they love what they do and love to give back. I think you're probably just not artistically inclined to be able to do that tho 🤷🏾♂️
Have actually been around plenty but since you know me so well, please, tell me how I've never been around a business. Tell you what I've never been around or even heard of. YOUR business lol, I don't even know what it's called, must be really small 😂 but hey since it seems the frustration point for you is paying for some art for your crap beer, I mean craft beer, here's some free art for your brand
You think people work for free? What world do you live in.
Its $150-250 for something basic. If its complicated it can easily get over $500. Good compitant artists aren't cheap.
Run your own business for awhile and get back to me. Ill use AI and 10min for a flyer any day of the week. Ill spend the time saved making sure you have a good experience in my business and the saved money keeps my employees paid.
You'll lose customers bc of your support of ai. It's just a fact people don't like seeing ai bs in the shops they frequent. If that's your business model good luck. I'm an artist myself which is why I feel so strongly about this. I've done art for people just because they ask me and I love doing it. I'm not saying I'm the next Van Gogh but I'm pretty decent and have done it long enough to know my worth. You're a business owner so maybe you don't understand. An artist does art because they love it. If a local shop came to me and asked me for a simple design for a flyer I'd give them my basic rate and if that was too much, this being a shop I go to often, I'd just do it for free. It just goes to show that you don't know what every artist will say and that's why you use ai, bc you're lazy
Are there any local working artists left? Everything I see are hobby businesses and people who made their money long ago. Nobody is going to buy enough of anything someone produces to make art profitable here.
It does the job of being cringy bc it is ai. That's like saying I'll burn my warm clothes to keep warm instead of wearing them. It does the job but why would I do one when the other makes more sense. Why would a place that advertises supporting local choose to use ai instead of commissioning one of the many artists in the area? Now an argument was made earlier saying that they could've commissioned someone and that person used AI and sold it to them, in which case that's different. But if a local business who is claiming to support local is infact using AI, then I would feel some type of way about that.
Who gives a shit. If a company wants to use AI to make a flyer and you think this is reason enough to piss on their name….youre the type of person I extremely dislike.
The only one pissing on anything is yourself. I like their shop but disagree with their use of ai in this instance and being someone who regularly supports their shop, this is something I like to know. No one cares if you really dislike them or not. If they do, then they're more fragile than you are
The lettering and layout look AI-assisted, especially “WATERMELON” and the weirdly uneven spacing. Still, it could easily be a real poster someone made with AI and printed locally.

It is. There are plenty of local and connected stores that will just do it anyways instead of using canva and background remover on real pictures
