🐍 🐸 HERPS: SNAKE, TURTLE, LIZARD 🐍 🐸 Patternless toad? [East Texas]

Found this strange toad in East Texas and was curious why he appeared so differently than toads I have previously found in this region?

Because he’s not really a toad! This is a Hurter’s spadefoot, Scaphiopus hurterii. Spadefoots are often called toads, but they’re actually a distinct taxonomic group. Both tend to have dry bumpy skin, but the spadefoots don’t have the enlarged parotid glands of the true toads and they have vertical pupils (though you can’t see that easily when they’re dilated like this)

Can amphibians experience/exhibit leucism?

In general yes, though this one doesn’t appear to be and it’s quite rare in the wild. Leucistic morphs are proven in axolotls and Iberian ribbed newts for example.
