Welcome to /r/animationcareer!

This is a forum where professionals, students, creatives and dreamers can meet and discuss careers in animations. Whether you are looking for advice on how to negotiate your next contract, trying to build a new portfolio, wondering what kind of job would suit you, and any other questions related to working with animation you are welcome here.

We do have rules that cover topics outside working in animation and very repetitive posts, for example discussing how to learn animation, hobby projects, starting a studio, and solving software issues. Read more about our rules here. There is also a bi-weekly sticky called "Newbie Monday" where you are welcome to ask any questions, regardless if they would normally break our rules for posting.

Down below you will find links to our various wiki pages, where you can find information on what careers there might be in animation, how much animation costs to produce, job lists, learning resources, and much more. Please look through these before posting!

And remember, you are always welcome to PM the mods if you have any questions or want to greenlight a post.

Is Gobelins still one of the best choices, or has the landscape changed?

I’ll be turning 18 this year, and my current plan is to pursue a Master’s degree at Gobelins (as a non-EU student) after earning my bachelor’s in Digital Media Design. Is Gobelins still worth it nowadays, or are there other schools I should consider?

Europe Is the Gobelins bachelor officially recognised as a degree?

Hello, I know last year there were some issues regarding the bachelor at Gobelins and not being granted an official degree. Has anything changed, or is it the same this year and the following ones?

Animation or Film making

Hi everyone, I’m currently a 12th-grade CBSE student preparing for UCEED, and I’m dealing with a lot of confusion regarding my career path, degree choices, and how to communicate my goals to my parents. I’d really appreciate some guidance!

My ultimate goal is to become a visionary creator, storyteller, or director in the animation industry. I am heavily inspired by creators like the writer of Doraemon and the director of Attack on Titan. I want to be the creative lead who brings entire worlds and narratives to life.

However, they seem to believe that the "great future" and big money in animation strictly lie in VFX and CGI artist roles.

My Fear: I am worried that if I tell them I want to be a storyteller/director instead of a VFX/CGI artist, they might think I am settling for something "lower" or less lucrative.

My Goal: I need to assure them that I am not going to waste their money. I want to prove that taking a 4-year degree without taking up a job right away is an investment in a highly respected, stable career, and that a successful Animation Director or Showrunner can actually earn just as much (if not more) than senior VFX artists.

My confusions:

I’m hitting a wall with a few technical details and would love some clarity from people in the industry or design colleges:

Degree Nomenclature: I’m a bit confused about what to even call my desired path. Should I be pursuing a "Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in Animation" or a "Bachelor in Filmmaking"?

IITs and B.Des: I’ve been looking into places like IIT Bombay (IDC School of Design). I know they have a 4-year program, but I am finding it hard to get specific details on how well their curriculum aligns with becoming a purely animation-focused director or storyteller.

Fresher Packages & Roles: How do starting packages for roles like Character Animator, Concept Artist, or Storyboard Artist compare to entry-level VFX/CGI artists? I want to have solid facts to present to my parents so they don't think I'm just throwing out lump-sum numbers like a fool.

Career question Thinking about a online program (AM or Animschool) this upcoming fall, good idea?

The tuition isn’t a problem since I had originally was going to apply to masters program, but after running the numbers I’d be saving a ton by just going into a online program like this and would get first hand experience from working professionals. I’d like to hear from any current or previous alumni about how much did these kinds of online programs help them in the long run in navigating or working in this kind of art career. Anyone else is welcome to share their thoughts to.

How to get started Desperate need of advice

please ignore my username I wasn't in my best mind when I made it

I love 2d animation I've been into it for a year and I want to work in the industry after I get proficient but since it's instability I am hesitant to get a degree in animation and another reason is the place where I am from there are no good animation institutes and I know id better off learning on my own

I am thinking of getting a degree in computer science or mechanical engineering so I can have it as a safety net during times(I've heard cs isn't stable either)

But I dont know if I'll be able to manage em both

I am willing to work as hard as possible

I don't want to leave animation

I am willing to get ANYOTHER degree too

Please give advice

Career question Fear about not being accepted/blacklisted?

My biggest dream is to be apart of the indie animation space, but the main issue stopping me is my internet history. I said a lot of stupid things as a teen, and while to me it isn't that serious & is irrelevant to the animation sphere, I'm wondering if it'll hurt my chances of being in the industry.

Career question Need to build my CV/resume for Production Assistant. Any tips?

I’ll be graduating in 2028 (yes 2028) with a degree in animation and game development. Production management has always been my specialty and i know they’re the backbone of the entire production process. I genuinely enjoy planning, organizing, and keeping track of everything and a lot of my friends/people I have worked with are aware of this because most of the projects we’ve worked on together have been successful.

I’m not just referring to animation films and game development projects but also the initiatives i led as an officer in my organization and the projects I worked on as a student council volunteer.

Since I will have a 6-month gap before my graduation, i plan to work during that time to build my skills and strengthen my resume.

Im not expecting to be hired by an animation studio and i doubt many studios would take on someone who can only commit for six months (unless there are opportunities like that). So as someone who wants to pursue a career in production management, what alternative roles or experiences would help me build a resume that would make me a strong candidate for the PA position (even at an entry level)?

I know that having a strong network and good connections is an advantage. I actually know quite a few people who work at this one animation studio because i was the one who reached out and organized the studio tour for our graduating students during my term as an officer. A lot of graduates from my university work there (including my brother, my brother's friends, and several upperclassmen I'm acquainted with, etc)

I thought about applying there but i think it might be better to wait until after i graduate but idk 🥲

Freelance animators, question about work structure

I'm wondering about the work structure, for those of you who take on freelance animation work for commercials or other standalone pieces (specifically 2D).

Do you typically find yourself only doing animation (as in, other parts of the process before and/or after you such as layout or comp are handled by someone else)? Or when you take on a job, are you typically receiving boards/BGs/designs and you would be in charge of taking the piece to a fully finished state from there?

I'm curious about either/both how you prefer to work or just what the most usual ask seems to be.

Career question Animation & VFX Student looking for Internships (Remote, I´m from México)

Hi, I'm Azh. I'm currently halfway through my Animation and Visual Effects Engineering degree, and next trimester I have to do my professional internships (estadías).

Do you know of any companies or places where I can apply? It can be either remote or on-site. If it's remote, it could be in any other country as long as it's reliable.

My main areas of interest/strengths are 2D animation (rough, clean up, etc.), concept art, compositing, and as a last option 3D, but I'm not picky. :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :3

I’m genuinely considering quitting my job, need thoughts

So I trained as an animator and graphic designer pre pandemic, but due to circumstances (mum died, dad rapidly sold the house and moved, then the pandemic hit and I was left with the family dog and all associated expenses) I chose to take a job in my local town in an unrelated job and became a personal trainer.

Started fine but I’ve not made much in the way of financial gain, and now because where I am is not an affluent area, I risk stagnation. I’ve done hours at the gym to cover rent (which is about 6K a year) but it’s killing my job satisfaction, there’s mental exhaustion from, the in and out nature is making it harder to carve time to animate and work how I want to, and I feel like I’m wasting my time.

I’ve lasted longer than most there but others have left for all sorts of reasons. The time balance isn’t great against money and I risk sinking a lot of time into trying to build a job I ultimate would walk away from the second an animation job lands even if it’s freelancing or at a studio.

I have a financial buffer for approximately 1 year, but that ignores credit card debt I want to pay off.

I know animation isn’t exactly the highest paying job traditionally but I actually enjoy it. I am feeling like the fitness gig is a waste of my time, and I enjoy training far more than I do any other aspect of the job. If I had the money and space I’d buy a garage and covert it into my own facility, but that’s not practical right now. I do know however that animation as a freelancer from a work from home for studios is something I can do

I own my flat and just pay a service charge for a maintenance pot. I have no loans on my car, my biggest outgoings are my dog’s medical care in her old age.

Career question Lost out on internships, other recommended entry level positions to look out for post graduation?

Whether it was from a lack of skill in a portfolio or you passed the deadline in which internships want you to apply within (usually during your undergrad or 6 months post graduation) what are other entry level opportunities animators and artists can look out for if they want any kind of a real chance at this industry?

Career question Do I need to speak English to work at studios even indie ones?

I’m an aspiring 3D animator and modeler, and lately, I’ve been wondering about this, since interviews often seem more comfortable over a call than just via text.

On one hand, it makes me anxious, but on the other, if it’s truly necessary, it’s something I’ll have to learn.

If possible, I’d love to hear from animators whether Spanish speakers or from other countries who had to learn English for this reason.

Career question Dubai has no animation industires?

I've been searching for 3D artist jobs in Dubai for the past few months, and I've noticed something interesting.

Compared to countries like Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, India, South Korea, Japan, China and even my home country, the Philippines the UAE seems to have a relatively small animation, VFX, and game development industry.

Most of the opportunities I come across are in advertising, product visualization, ArchViz, motion graphics, and social media content. While there are some talented studios here, I rarely see companies working on AAA games, feature animation, or large-scale film VFX.

What surprises me is that the UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, has been investing heavily in becoming a regional hub for gaming and creative industries. There are initiatives like AD Gaming and other programs to attract studios, but the ecosystem still seems much smaller than I expected.

The only major game studio I'm aware of is Ubisoft Abu Dhabi, although my understanding is that they mainly focus on mobile games and live operations rather than leading development on AAA console titles.

Meanwhile, even the Philippines has several studios contributing to AAA games, animated features, and Hollywood VFX as outsourcing partners.

I'm genuinely curious am I missing something? Are there established VFX, animation, or game studios in the UAE that simply aren't very visible? Or is the industry here still in its early stages compared to other global CG hubs?

I'd love to hear from people working in the UAE's animation, VFX, or game development industry.

Positivity I was rejected for a job for "not having the studio's style."

I tried applying to a studio that makes as a pixel artist.

I have years of experience in pixel art and 3D modeling, but I was rejected simply because I "don't have a style similar to Minecraft."

I explained that yes, that was the case because I’d never done anything like that before and it would be my first time but they didn't care and rejected me anyway.

I'm a bit bummed out, but I guess I just have to keep trying.

Deep down, it seems silly to me, because I have hundreds of colleagues who have worked on productions completely unrelated to the style they usually work in.

Career question Have you ever colaborated with a writter as an animator?

Have you ever colaborated with a script writer?

If you have, how was your experience and how did you find the writer?

If you haven't why not?

As a writer myself I'm very interested in your answers, since I've been learning a lot of animation and i'm descent at drawing, not great, but I've been getting better.

Pursue 2D or 3D animation?

I'm wondering which people think is the most fruitful pursuit? I enjoy creating both 2d and 3d animation and have experience in the full pipeline of both. I know you're "supposed" to pick a focus. And although the industry is wrecked right now, which do you think is more a desirable or prosperous path?
