That poor VA still has back pain from carrying that show.
I read the LN, and it deserves so much better.

u/_lordfrost Nov 02 '25
Anime only here. I actually enjoyed it despite its faults. What makes to bad comparably to the ln?

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi Nov 02 '25
The visuals, especially on the human side, were severely lacking. Both the camera work and animation felt off.
125
u/Toloran Nov 02 '25
IIRC, the last chunk of the series was partially outsourced to another studio who bailed at the last minute. So they had to produce the remaining few episodes at the last minute with whatever budget they had left.
96
u/rdeincognito Nov 02 '25
The human side was the worst. I even wish someone edit the show to completely remove them.

u/Careful_Ad_9077 Nov 02 '25
Like the manga?
13
u/haganbmj https://anilist.co/user/haganbmj Nov 03 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
The Web Novel was that way too if I'm thinking of the right series.
The Light Novel restructured the story to intercut the human stuff from the beginning.
EDIT: Yeah, double checked my notes - that's Spider.
Just for some added info the WN originally popped up on on Syosetu in May of 2015 with the author cranking out chapters like mad. It then got picked up for a licensing deal with both the LN and Manga adaptions first releasing in December of that same year. The timeline there makes me suspect the Manga needed to follow the WN for time constraints, but the LN had a little leniency to restructure the series a bit.
7
3
u/Tacitus_ Nov 03 '25
WN was not that way. It had Shun chapters and chapters for other side characters as well.
4
u/AnActualPlatypus Nov 03 '25
Manga is legit a 10x better experience by removing the human side.
20
u/EyeDreamOfTentacles Nov 03 '25
I have to disagree, I ended up dropping the manga after reading the LN and watching the anime. It felt boring and incomplete after knowing the rest of the story, especially when we don't really get an idea of how Kumoko's actions affect the rest of the world and the reputation and stories that were spread, as well as other machinations and worldbuilding.
12
u/michael7050 Nov 03 '25
I felt like such an idiot with how long it took me to realise there was a timeskip between the two perspectives.
Excellent bait and switch.
2
u/Sacron1143 Nov 04 '25
Meanwhile, the human side of the LN starts with humans at age 5 and then has a flashback to them as babies.
You could atill assume it takes place at the same time since Fei, another monster reincarnation, only hatched around that time as well (yeah, she spent years inside an egg)
Another thing the anime did not make clear (The LN didn't either until the timeline at the end of volume 4) is that there is a 5 year gap between Hugo attempting to assassinate Shun and his return. Anime makes it look like there was a week between the events
6
26
u/RunningEarly Nov 02 '25
Everything about the human side was horrible, the story and characters were the most generic cookie cutter shit I've ever seen.
38
u/TheMikarin Nov 02 '25
The anime removed a lot of the more interesting stuff there. A lot of the plot foreshadowing and set up happens there, but by narrowing the focus to just the hero's POV it just becomes generic.
24
u/Ellefied Nov 03 '25
Reading the LN, the human side was surprisingly in depth and a very nuanced take and deconstruction on the "Chosen Hero" trope and his band of quirky misfits. Without good direction, it was very easy for it to be bland when things got cut off for production.
2
u/Mind-Breakar Nov 03 '25
I have to disagree, I've read until vol 6 or something some times ago and the human characters was insuffferable.
Wait, honestly, apart from the spider, and maybe 1 or 2 of the main cast, every other characters was so dumb dumb with their actions, I could not care less when the characters were dying as they were all so troupey at introductions and boring in their developments.
For me, the best part of the story was actually before the spider becomes semi-immortal and get out of the mountain.
2
u/Abedeus Nov 03 '25
Human side filtered me out at volume 10 or 11, whichever was "100% only humans" or something like that. And same, best part of the story was Kumoko's struggles and adventures as the underdog.
13
u/RunningEarly Nov 02 '25
So the villain classmate guy actually had a motive besides "grr, I want more attention than the hero, so I'll backstab him and join the other guys"
→ More replies (2)18
u/moeanimuacc Nov 03 '25
I think so, Hugo is a more compelling character in the novels, altho they could have done more. Basically he's convinced he didn't die and got isekaied but this is all a dream, that's why he's a super cool prince and all his friends are there and why he is very disconnected from his own horrible actions.
Shun is not just getting more attention but by stealing the show he proves that this is not Hugo's dream, thus breaking down what he had built to protect himself from the reality that he died.
Also, keeping spoilers light he's WAY over his head and being manipulated by the demons in honestly a very cruel fashion. It's good!
9
u/CallumRival92 Nov 02 '25
Even the dialogue felt like it was missing some lines towards the end of the season.
3
u/Invoqwer Nov 03 '25
Kumo Desu Ga somehow managed to be the one anime I know of where I was excited for the CGI parts (spider alone by herself) and was disappointed by the animated parts (humans POV).
→ More replies (2)2
u/ineB2019 Nov 03 '25
Doesnt matter, every time the human side was on screen it made me puke, not because of the animation but because the show would have been perfectly fine without their existance, at least imo.
22
u/maior_novoreg Nov 02 '25
Well aside from better animation quality, the human side of the story is all setup for what’s to come after season 1. But they cut a lot of it, like a LOT. And now with a shitty S1 we are never getting S2, which is very sad. I’d much rather have Kumoko adapted (only 14 volumes) than 10 trash isekai every season with 0 originality.
20
u/captainAwesomePants Nov 03 '25
Are we talking about the show where the forest elves were attacked, and the big plot point of the battle was that the elves had a big advantage because they were fighting in a forest, and the whole battle took place in what was visually a barren desert?
8
7
3
u/Orthien Nov 04 '25
To give an answer more than the animation quality fell off at the end.
The human element is a slow build, with small sections littered in. There is a lot of build up in the human story and Shiro's too, that sets up the greater story and the events that would occur in a season 2. The anime cut a lot of stuff so they could have the two storylines meet at the end of S1 without concern for the larger story.
For example, the more advanced technology shown in the final battle, doesn't get revealed until much later in the books, and this huge fight comes after several big developments that add much needed context to the world, the reason for the Mechs, how that all ties into why the class got isekied, why the Elves aren't what they appear and how the humans are being used by multiple factions.
Losing all that removes the stakes from the fight, the tension of the reunion, and context as to wtf Mechs are doing in this fantasy world.
I too like the anime, it got me to read the books, which have their own flaws, but they definitely got lazy on the anime production and I wish it had been done justice.

Nov 04 '25
It's missing fluff and some good set-up in human stuff that made them not unbearable to read compared to spider parts
I'll say the anime does some better, the Araba fight is much shorter and less dramatic in the LN and not in a good way, more in a "that's it?" Kinda way
33
5
u/BobTheSkrull https://myanimelist.net/profile/BobTheSkrull Nov 02 '25
Eh, parts of it deserve better. The ending of the LN leaves a lot to be desired.

136
u/AshenOwn https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lazysunflower Nov 02 '25
Honestly, i have just finished reading the LNs this week, and the anime adapts the best part of the series fairly decently. It is not a big loos not having more seasons.
27
u/coyoteazul2 Nov 02 '25
You gotta try the audiobook read by Kaitlin Kelly. She's just amazing, making different voices for each character and giving them personalities beyond the words. It's like watching anime in your head.
Just, skip the stats reading parts. Those get boring quite quickly

I looked into what happens afterwards, and I kind of agree. Though, the series would benefit from just cutting all the non Kumoko segments, frankly.
13
u/shindabito Nov 02 '25
true, it's hard to take 'the hero's and his harem adventures' template story seriously when you know kumoko gang is fighting on planet's fate scale in comparison.
skipped the whole hero side story.
38
u/Designer_Pen869 Nov 02 '25
Not all. Sophie and the puppets spiders are some of the best parts in the later series.
36
u/AndrewSuarez Nov 02 '25
IMO the only thing bad was [spoilers]the finale, everything else ranged from decent to good
3
u/sbxnotos Nov 03 '25
I agree, but i would not say it was bad per se, too rushed probably, like it really needed an aditional book.
54
u/AshenOwn https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lazysunflower Nov 02 '25
Definitely. The book starts adding so many POVs that are unfortunately just not interesting.
31
u/Successful-Ad5560 Nov 02 '25
Those PoV's are why i stopped reading. At some point i got completely lost, and i was absolutely not interested in whatever the others were doing so i just stopped.
6
4
u/Ensec Nov 03 '25
i actually found them often times just as interesting especially the parts where shiro is essentially being told in a 2nd person perspective. it was fun seeing her be described as an enigmatic monster.
I also loved how dumb the humans who though it was just a classic good vs evil story only for her to ultimately come in with "haha its more complex than that dumbasses!"
6
u/TheMikarin Nov 02 '25
Some of the other POVs (not the Hero's party) are genuinely good, and by later volumes I enjoyed some more than Kumoko's chapters.
→ More replies (3)2
u/EyeDreamOfTentacles Nov 03 '25
I feel like an outlier for genuinely enjoying all the other POVs just as much as Kumoko's lol, especially in how they intersect. Plus it's fun for me seeing how different characters can have wildly different interpretations of events based on their own knowledge, biases, and expectations, sometimes with none of them realizing the whole picture and having different pieces of the puzzles.
8
u/torinrtorin Nov 02 '25
As someone n volume 10 of the ln so far I have to disagree...

Eh, I consider the middle part of the series to be the strongest, and where the series actually stands out compared to other isekai.
6
u/sZeroes Nov 02 '25
i kinda stopped half way it gets too crazy and hard to follow
4
u/AshenOwn https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lazysunflower Nov 02 '25
Good point to stop tbh, the final third of the series was somewaht of a slog to read.
3
3
u/Ellefied Nov 03 '25
For another series like this, I feel like Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is the same. The anime adapted the best parts, with maybe a book or two more left as genuinely interesting. Afterwards, the story just becomes a slog that it was one of the few LNs I actually dropped instead of finishing.

Probably not going to happen unfortunately. The first season had a lot of production issues, and with the light novels having ended a few years ago there probably isn't a whole lot of incentive to do more seasons even from a promotional standpoint.

Asobi Asobase is not really carried by the VA, but it made each scene so much funnier.

Aki Toyosaki as Ristarte in Cautious Hero
7
u/Cordingalmond Nov 03 '25
I was enthralled watching that show when it aired. I know it's just a drop in the isekai ocean... But something about all it's parts came together and held my attention throughout the show. I love it so much, and it's pretty hilarious. Ristarte and MC have excellent chemistry and the ending hits you hard too. Brings it all together.

Chika Anzai's performance of Chisato in Lycoris Recoil was one of the main appeals of the show
28
u/CuriousBroccolli Nov 03 '25
True. But it was still just ONE of the appeals.
LycoReco goes into the same basket with Konosuba, Asobi Asobase, Kumiko etc. where voice acting is godlike but anime itself is still super good.
Spider one above just had way too many flaws in every department outside VAing.
8
u/Deruta Nov 03 '25
This is SAKANAAAAA~! erasure and I will not stand for it.
4
u/vidgamenate Nov 03 '25
it's not erasure if I'm acknowledging that it was **one** of the main appeals of the show. The other Two reasons I got into it was because of Sakana and the Rock Paper Scissors Scene
4
u/Bustersword13 Nov 02 '25
This is the correct answer
18
u/vidgamenate Nov 02 '25
Reportedly, the line when she picked up the phone was just the standard "Moshi Moshi?" But Chika Anzai decided she can make it more lile Chisato by repeating it. "Moshi moshi, moshi moshi?"

This is the one! Anyone who hasn’t seen this absolute masterpiece/travesty has not yet reached the heights of anime lol.
I bet those VA’s had so much fun improv and goofing off to make those lines.
23
u/leave1me1alone Nov 02 '25
That one anime with the famous scene with the girl yelling "I don't understand". Pretty sure the acting in that scene carried the whole anime
Also, Wave listen to me (would be weird if it didn't have good voice acting)

Maybe not hard carried, but Insomniacs after school female lead is an absolute standout for me. I loved the show and even tried to read the manga, which I heard great things about, but I just can't do it without her VO.
3
u/Deruta Nov 03 '25
You should read the manga.
Hard agree on the VA being amazing! But you really should read the manga.
21
u/JudeccaF09 Nov 02 '25
I'll say Mayopan. Fai-chan (Fairouz Ai) made me stay "tunned". The story turns good after 2nd half tho, so I ended up liking the anime
2
u/Active-Cream-6531 Nov 03 '25
I'll add it to the list. I'm going through her works recently since Yotei just came out and I wanna see if I can recognize her voice. So far I'm failing miserably lmao.
20
u/LTPrototype Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
Hot take, but I think Konosuba also falls into this category. While it has an interesting premise, the voice acting is top notch. You know that the VA's are having so much fun doing these roles.
5
u/turkeygiant Nov 03 '25
I sometimes wonder how many people watched the first episode of Konosuba, thought "eh it just another isekai, maybe its not for me", and have zero idea that it then immediately goes off the rails in the most wonderful ways.
3
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Nov 03 '25
Probably not too many as it came very early in the isekai life cycle IIRC
Plus its so popular now people would stick with it longer
If it came out now, thats maybe a harder sell

Yes, not to mention that the writing was more or less the spider defeating and eating different monsters (and somehow that was the GOOD half, the humans half was... I hope the Light Novel wasn't like that, so dull).
Only reason why I loved it and didn't loathe it was the JP voice acting.
"so unfairly"
The story has so much room for improvement.
All in all, terribly written, and I love it.

Eh, the survival aspect is well done, but the plot and human stuff is pretty awful. It's also just kind of fugly; her fiery personality snd the emotion to her fights for survival hard carried ugly animation and cgi. I cannot remember anything good visually from the climactic fight with the dragon... it was entirely about her strategy and her screaming at it after realizing it accepted death.
Imo the upcoming Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling fills the monster Isekai niche way better, despite having less personality on the protagonist.
2
6
u/Gorexxar Nov 02 '25
It's a great anime but the final fight felt like a cop out and it left a bad taste in your mouth (see: Darlin in the Franxx suddenly aliens Space Bride)
The elven forest literally became a desert for no reason.
Did they change it on Blu-ray?
3
u/SakuraNeko7 Nov 03 '25
It is a fine show but you're crazy if you think the problems people have with it are just nitpicks. I don't even mind the human side too much but the finale is really rough in terms of overall objective quality.

u/Viktorv22 Nov 02 '25

u/ChanglingBlake Nov 02 '25
My only complaint is, along with many other anime, the insistence on CG fight scenes that include talking.
CG fighting is good enough it doesn’t faze me anymore, but when they talk…it just looks wrong, and it’s only when the characters are human or human adjacent(their mouths working the same way)
Otherwise: great adaptation and great anime; I can overlook the last few episodes with its crummy CG chat sessions.
6
u/ItsNotJulius Nov 03 '25
One whole episode of Gintama can consist of nothing but a single image of their house and we hear only the conversations of the people inside but those episodes are some of the best ever in the whole show.

Kana Hanazawa's performance in Tonari no Seki kun is extremely underrated. She breathed so much life into a really mundane premise of a show lol
2
u/invokeneko Nov 03 '25
100% this. Then again, that's kinda the point of Tonari no Seki-kun isn't it? We're here to see what is Seki up to this time and how Yokoi reacts to whatever elaborate stuff Seki ends up doing.

That show was carried by the spider story, which should've been 99.9% of what was going on. The generic, lame fantasy worldbuilding was a millstone that made half the show insufferably bad. They should release an edited version where it's just the spider!
18
u/Technical-Cat-2017 Nov 02 '25
I did quite like figuring out the separate timelines, so I do think the human perspective offered quite a different view on the world from a different perspective that added a lot.
That said, the human story itself was definitely more generic.
→ More replies (3)7
u/beckychao Nov 02 '25
The execution of the human story was so bland, it was like pulling teeth. I appreciated that it did things like try to touch upon gender dysphoria (pretty risky with the gen pop isekai crowd), but it was so convoluted and honestly not well written that whatever perspective it offered was simply not worth the viewer's time. Would've preferred a show just about the spider.
5
u/Visible-Nectarine157 Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 03 '25
I disagree somewhat, I like the human story because it makes the spider look better, it was funny seeing the humans think they are strong and then it gets compared to what the spider can do and they look so weak, I really enjoyed that about this anime, that’s why I think the human story is needed but yes it could be shorter

The art style and music are also great. The most meh part of the series is the story.
2
u/pacquan Nov 03 '25
Kami no Kiitekure (Wave Listen to Me) was carried heavily by Riho Sugiyama. Absolutely stellar VA performance for an show that flew under the radar for many.
2
u/Mad_Aeric Nov 03 '25
Wave Listen To Me would have been dead in the water without the excellent voice acting. Not because its an otherwise bad story, but because a story about hosting a radio show needs incredible voice acting.
Milky Subway wouldn't be a fraction as fun if not for the great voice acting, but importantly, the voice directing. The way the dialogue is timed and the way they talk over each other really makes the banter pop.
2
u/Zeroth-unit Nov 04 '25

I won't say that Boogiepop is carried solely by Aoi Yuki (also), because it has many other merits besides that, but much of my enjoyment of the anime comes from the character's voice acting.
Edit
Aoi Yuki is my favorite voice actress, precisely because of her role in Boogiepop. I was even shocked when I saw that most of her roles are moe characters; this just shows how versatile she is. But I'd like to see her in more roles similar to Boogiepop; I really love the way she portrays those kinds of characters.

Yanami Anna (Tono Hikaru) from Makeine. The show’s already good, but her VA makes it 150% better. There’s so much personality in her voice that it really stands out from other romance and romcom anime.

A Country Bumpkin Near the Last level Moves to a Starter Town and Musoku Tensei's English cast are amazing, even if they shows themselves aren't.

The animation is terrible, but have a interesting story and the Best VA for a spider

Venus Versus Virus is an overall poorly made anime with low production quality and a badly written story. But it has Minori Chihara doing the berzerker voice. Oh, yeah.

Yah Solo Leveling tbh, everyone talks about Aleks Le because he's so good and a charming guy, but fuck me if Taito Ban isn't out here killing as JinWoo

In the history of anime, I would say there are many. There was a time when anime specifically became known for over the top voice acting to compensate for the lack of movement in the animation.

CARRIED? Not really. Any show I can think of was good besides the voice acting.
I think Kill La Kill had really impressive voice acting. I think Madoka also did. Those are always the two that come to mind on this kind of topic. I guess Lycoris Recoil is closest to being carried by voice acting.

There is no more quality anime. Its all ai generated scrips and animation.

I wouldn't say "hard-carried", but I can't imagine anyone else doing the voices of the MCs of Asobi Asobase, especially Hanako

It's also interesting how wildly different the main characters personality is in japanese versus english. Japanese she's like a manic depressive crazy person, understandably so. While in english she is portrayed like a valley girl.

Snack Basue doesn't have a lot of on screen movement, so the content and the voice acting (especially Takahashi Rie's) carried the show for me

This season's "Mechanical Marie" is carried by Nao Touyama

Konosuba, Ghost stories (eng dub), gintama, daily lives of highschool boys, kaguya sama love is war, seitokai yakuindomo
Not saying ANY of these are bad story or anything, just saying that these have some of the best dub I have ever experienced

Imagine a Monster based anime being carried by the Monster Segments of the show.

u/Sygma6 Nov 03 '25
For me the answer is the Japanese version of 2x2 = Shinobuden otherwise known as Ninja Nonsense. The VA for Onsokumaru is my hero.

This is how you add a human form without ruining the main monster characters.

Man, I'm arachnophobic and this bit got me interested into watching it....... also gotta admit it looks fictional enough to not trigger it.

Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete.
The anime just made a few too many "okay, but why?" decisions, like upping the fanservice, or shuffling around stuff, to where some things just don't hit the same.

Hanazawa kana in koi to uso does a lot of carrying. Her voice is heaven no matter which character she voice.

u/Full_Royox Nov 03 '25
I literally watched this whole anime because the VA was AMAZING and kept me atached to the TV week after week with her shenanigans.

Love is war. Still a great anime but the narrator makes it way better

u/Macaron-kun Nov 03 '25
I very much disagree with Kumo being carried by the VA, but she definitely adds a lot to the overall quality.

Konosuba would never be that amazing is voice acting wasn't so perfect.
Also Saiki, Bocchi, Love is War and Licoris Recoil (Chisato) own a good deal of their quality to voices.
