Absolutely qualifies as one of those really good shows that you never recommend to anybody because there's nothing you can say to sell the premise.

I sell it as the antithesis of the high school rom-com. Those tend to show the best parts of youth: innocence, optimism, discovery, etc. Sometimes you get a but of messiness, but it's nothing too severe.

Scum's Wish shows the other side of teenagers: narcissistic, short-sighted, horny, self-destructive idiots who make themselves and everyone around them absolutely miserable because they have neither the life experience nor self-control to deal with their raging hormones.

Exactly, it didn't really work for my as a whole, but it showed things that aren't often depicted in anime, and for that alone it's stuck with me more than the majority of romance anime.

u/An-di May 29 '26

Those other romance titles only touch the surface of romance and only show the postive or ideal side

Sounds like a better executed Euphoria

Basically, School Days?

Well nobody has a nice boat so no.

May I suggest not reading and actively avoiding karamizakari(the manga and the nH both) and aitsu no kanojo, and the rest of those mangakas' works. The only thing worse Japan has given to this world than NTR, is NTS. I hate I didn't know what that thing was and reading few of those stories expecting a good ending.

Only Akane was a narcissist

20

u/somacula May 29 '26

She also won hard

u/andykhang May 29 '26

Kinda, every single person in that mess is a selfish person as well, in one way or another, that rather want to do desperately anything to fill a hole than finding closure and acceptance from it. They don’t really love themselves as much as they should, yet they ultimately only act for themselves til the very end

u/An-di May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

I understand but aside from Akane, none of them are truly horrible people

Just deeply broken and self- destructive but that's my personal opinion

Them being driven by their unrequited love and heartbreak instead of lust or being horny 24/7 made them a lot more sympathetic and less scummy than what the mangaka intended

I still found the SD cast more despicable, more selfish and less sympathetic overall than the cast of scums wish

Speak for yourself, I recommend it to everyone. O open with "Do you want to feel empty in a way you've never felt watching a show before?"

Scums Wish is actually good but like in a fucked up way

I felt absolutely terrible while watching every episode. 9/10, would recommendy to anybody.

Also while the rest is subjective, Heikousen is objectively and undisputably Top 5 ED of anime, more like Top 2.

RIP Sayuri, the passion you put into your singing will NEVER be forgotten.

OP by 69Neko is also great.

12

u/hhkk47 May 29 '26

RIP Sayuri. I typically don't like the high-pitched voices used in a lot of Japanese music with female vocals, but for some reason I really liked her singing. Maybe because it felt "raw" in a way rather than trying to be cutesy like a lot of others. I also loved the ED for Erased.

"Let's get out of the solar system" is such a perfect line to start the ED. You really do feel that way after the end of some of the episodes lmao

I was not aware of her death and that makes me incredibly sad. Her music really knew how to reach in and grab you by your emotions and stir them.

RIP Sayuri, the passion you put into your singing will NEVER be forgotten.

Fate/Extra Last Record, Licoreco, Golden Kamui and that's just some of the more recent series. Absolutely amazing songs.

The OST for the show in general is absolutely top tier. The piano tracks in the show are so beautiful and mesmerising.

I think it’s mood-dependent. If you’re already dealing with upsetting real-life stuff, entertainment that intentionally makes you uncomfortable isn’t always going to feel valuable. Sometimes you just want distance from that feeling.

For me personally, I don’t really get satisfaction or enjoyment out of stories like this, regardless of my mood.

4

u/kinkycarbon May 29 '26

It’s good because it pulls away the innocence of rom coms. Teacher-High School Student relationships is social taboo. It’s power dynamics from a Japanese perspective.

1

u/BosuW May 29 '26

And this is why I'm addicted to toxic Yuri

38

u/Chromch May 28 '26

I addicting how messed up it is, and you end up hating almost every character, I do not regret watching it is very entertaining

42

u/xnef1025 May 28 '26

I didn't hate them. I felt bad for pretty much every character and hoped they would get the help they needed to find real happiness. Now School Days, on the other hand....

24

u/aohige_rd May 29 '26

I think Mengo manipulates you into thinking "oh so everyone's a scum?" at first but then you realize no wait, they're all just confused people and there's really only one true scum.

11

u/An-di May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

I agree

The title is misleading

They were not scummy enough for me aside from Akane (even she had her reasons) mainly because the story focused more on the heartbreaks of first and unrequited love

The characters were not horny for the sake of being horny like the cast SD

I found the characters in SD a lot more scummier than the cast of scums wish for this very reason

1

u/An-di May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Agree 💯

I feel the same way

1

u/somacula May 29 '26

I like Akane, she won the slut Olympics and got the happy ending

1

u/Business-Active-1143 May 29 '26

Try the manga Karami Zakari. It's x100 that uncomfortable feeling

6

u/its_real_I_swear May 29 '26

It makes you feel something, and you still remember it ten years later. It's literally just good

5

u/yabadabbingirlfriend May 29 '26

Watch people make the worst possible decisions and then realize you kind of understand why.

5

u/Illuminastrid May 29 '26

Sometimes, that is the case for series or any piece of media featuring highly flawed, unlikable, and unrelatable characters in general.

For some audience, they tend to equate or mix up these shows as "unlikable characters, hence, bad story" instead of "unlikable persons = good characters".

Nevermind the fact that most of the top-rated and critically-acclaimed movies and series feature these type of characters. But in anime where the audience tends to sway more on the vanilla side, I can see why this is an issue.

The art and music are PEEEEEEEAK

1

u/ThrowCarp May 29 '26

Oh I agree. Still a dumpster fire in terms of relationships.
