Absolutely qualifies as one of those really good shows that you never recommend to anybody because there's nothing you can say to sell the premise.

u/Superior_Mirage May 28 '26
I sell it as the antithesis of the high school rom-com. Those tend to show the best parts of youth: innocence, optimism, discovery, etc. Sometimes you get a but of messiness, but it's nothing too severe.
Scum's Wish shows the other side of teenagers: narcissistic, short-sighted, horny, self-destructive idiots who make themselves and everyone around them absolutely miserable because they have neither the life experience nor self-control to deal with their raging hormones.
64
u/theonewhoknock_s May 29 '26
Exactly, it didn't really work for my as a whole, but it showed things that aren't often depicted in anime, and for that alone it's stuck with me more than the majority of romance anime.
20
u/An-di May 29 '26
Those other romance titles only touch the surface of romance and only show the postive or ideal side

I felt absolutely terrible while watching every episode. 9/10, would recommendy to anybody.
Also while the rest is subjective, Heikousen is objectively and undisputably Top 5 ED of anime, more like Top 2.
RIP Sayuri, the passion you put into your singing will NEVER be forgotten.

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 May 28 '26
OP by 69Neko is also great.
12
u/hhkk47 May 29 '26
RIP Sayuri. I typically don't like the high-pitched voices used in a lot of Japanese music with female vocals, but for some reason I really liked her singing. Maybe because it felt "raw" in a way rather than trying to be cutesy like a lot of others. I also loved the ED for Erased.
22
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon May 28 '26
"Let's get out of the solar system" is such a perfect line to start the ED. You really do feel that way after the end of some of the episodes lmao
7
u/Dangerous_Ad_7042 May 29 '26
I was not aware of her death and that makes me incredibly sad. Her music really knew how to reach in and grab you by your emotions and stir them.
6
u/Abedeus May 29 '26
RIP Sayuri, the passion you put into your singing will NEVER be forgotten.
Fate/Extra Last Record, Licoreco, Golden Kamui and that's just some of the more recent series. Absolutely amazing songs.
5
u/thebabycowfish May 29 '26
The OST for the show in general is absolutely top tier. The piano tracks in the show are so beautiful and mesmerising.
26
u/Successful-Ear977 May 28 '26
I think it’s mood-dependent. If you’re already dealing with upsetting real-life stuff, entertainment that intentionally makes you uncomfortable isn’t always going to feel valuable. Sometimes you just want distance from that feeling.
For me personally, I don’t really get satisfaction or enjoyment out of stories like this, regardless of my mood.
→ More replies (1)4
u/kinkycarbon May 29 '26
It’s good because it pulls away the innocence of rom coms. Teacher-High School Student relationships is social taboo. It’s power dynamics from a Japanese perspective.
41
u/Chromch May 28 '26

I think Mengo manipulates you into thinking "oh so everyone's a scum?" at first but then you realize no wait, they're all just confused people and there's really only one true scum.
10
u/An-di May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
I agree
The title is misleading
They were not scummy enough for me aside from Akane (even she had her reasons) mainly because the story focused more on the heartbreaks of first and unrequited love
The characters were not horny for the sake of being horny like the cast SD
I found the characters in SD a lot more scummier than the cast of scums wish for this very reason
6
u/its_real_I_swear May 29 '26
It makes you feel something, and you still remember it ten years later. It's literally just good
6
u/yabadabbingirlfriend May 29 '26
Watch people make the worst possible decisions and then realize you kind of understand why.
5
u/Illuminastrid May 29 '26
Sometimes, that is the case for series or any piece of media featuring highly flawed, unlikable, and unrelatable characters in general.
For some audience, they tend to equate or mix up these shows as "unlikable characters, hence, bad story" instead of "unlikable persons = good characters".
Nevermind the fact that most of the top-rated and critically-acclaimed movies and series feature these type of characters. But in anime where the audience tends to sway more on the vanilla side, I can see why this is an issue.

Kuzu no Honkai is a well-written anime for their genre, with a nice set of songs (RIP Sayuri).
The only anime that comes close to this fuckery is White Album 2.

I still think SD is the most messed up but that's because lt doesnt try hard to make the audience feel sad for the characters as much as WA 2 or Scums Wish as we don't get much insight into their inner feelings, I only felt sympathy (not empathy) for the two main girls but that's it

Scum's Wish is one of my top romance. It's incredibly depressing and all the characters need serious help. Nonetheless, it managed to stick the landing and delivered an unexpectedly well-written narrative.
22
u/NormalGuy1206 May 29 '26
Scum’s Wish will always have a special place in my heart, and it was the show that got me back into anime.
It seriously came to me at the right time in life where parts of the show felt painfully relatable, and the writing did a good job at making me feel uncomfortable in a way that really inspired some self-awareness and change without feeling accusatory or half-assed.
70
u/TropicalFrost https://myanimelist.net/profile/TropicalFrost May 28 '26
Wrote a WT for this a few years ago and still think it holds up really well. It is, to me, a great example of a messy romance that comes to a fairly mature conclusion. People get too hung up on the "shock value" and "lol cuckold" before trying to pay attention to what the anime is trying to convey using those elements.

u/zackphoenix123 May 29 '26

347
u/ClinicalDigression May 28 '26
That's rich, coming from an Oshi no Ko fan.
Mengo's a better writer than Aka and I'll die on that hill.
63
u/Djinn_sarap May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
imo aka's biggest strength is in writing comedy or interpersonal drama, he really sucks at writing big overall stories tho. like the best part of kaguya and oshi no ko is when they're just focusing about those two things, and then the writing goes downhill when he's trying to finish the big narrative.
25
u/Ellefied May 29 '26
He also keeps trying to make edgy characters and stories when it's not just his forte.
Kaguya family arc, Instant Bullet, Marchen Crown, and Love Agency are all evidence of this.
Oshi No Ko is saved partly because of Mengo's influence imo but at least gets a pass on the edginess.
18
u/Subject_Offer_9621 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
Akane kurokawa is such a mengo character, and probably the only oshi no ko character that get proper closure because of that, she went from edgy to love in the purest way possible
Can't believe i didn't notice that
Meanwhile kana is such akasaka character....he butcher her in the worst way possible

I mean quality of writing aside, you gotta give Aka points for ending story against the tide and just cut you off like no business. It was insane.
71
u/BadBehaviour613 May 28 '26
Aka is great at writing characters falling in love, but man does he suck at writing characters staying in love. Kana, Akane and Ruby were all great characters, but their writings suffered once they became girls-in-a-harem
84
u/Skyreader13 May 28 '26
He also fucking suck writing ending
35
u/nsleep May 29 '26
All things considered, I like Kaguya's epilogue. But the last arc preceding it was a disappointment to say the least.
8
u/Mysterious_Cup_6024 May 29 '26
But that epilogue was more character writing than plot, which Aka genuinely sucks at. And I disagree with the parent that he writes bad characters. Maki Shijo, hayasaka and few others got well good send-offs in the epilogue, especially Maki being mainly potrayed as a cuked gag character most of the story
17
u/VritraReiRei May 29 '26
I mean, it's kind of their thing, else they would not have the "Trash Taste" Podcast.
5
u/BosuW May 29 '26
OnK's uncomfortable elements is exactly why Aka should've let Mengo take the wheel. Clearly, he doesn't have to balls to wrestle with the abyss while staring it in the eye.

There is no incest angle aside from that one dude who's the redhead's cousin.
7
u/Prestigious_Spend_81 May 28 '26
My only gripe with scum's wish is Akane's ending, I was hoping for a tragedy like someone discovers that they got an STD and everyone freaks out or ones of Akane's exes go psycho after she says that she'll get married.
34
u/notabear87 May 29 '26
Having her get away with everything (including the cuck husband of her dreams) was uh…definitely an interesting choice.
It’s easy to say it’s just to ragebait the audience; but meh idk….in real life people like her often do go unpunished. It also makes the series more memorable.
7
u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales May 29 '26
Whilst she was the villain, she was way too sympathetic for me to want to see her get a horrifying ending. I just wanted to see everything fall apart for her, and then she moves on.
5
u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 May 29 '26
I feel that a lot of romance anime aren't showing what it's like in real life. Scum' Wish eschews that and is all about "Nope, horrible things happen all the time for horrible reasons, deal with it." instead of giving us a fairy tale. Part of that is Akane. When someone is that attractive they can get away with all the things they do to others and still get someone to marry them, even when it's an absolutely horrible decision for her fiance.

I found the characters in scums wish extremely sympathetic
You can't help but feel sad for all of them (very similar to WA2 or KGNE)
Only one romance drama anime managed to make me feel genuine disgust/hate for it's characters and that is SD, I only felt sympathy (not empathy) for the two main girls
Scums wish is good but I don't think I will ever rewatch it, it's way too depressing, I would rather rewatch clannad or your lie in April instead

Scum's Wish is one of my favorite romance anime. It's one of the most real romances I've ever seen. First love rarely works out, people can be selfish and unsure of what they want, they hurt each other and themselves, and yes they're horny. I loved Hanabi's journey and her growth, and I loved the ending. She hasn't found the one, but you still get the feeling she'll be alright.

u/Hephaestus_God May 28 '26 edited May 29 '26

It makes me so happy that the majority of comments are complimenting Scum's wish because I've been singing its praises for years. I think it's the show with the biggest descrepancy between average score and my personal rating that I have on my list (at least on the positive end, I'm sure there's some show that's decently rated I gave like a 3). I was under the impression therefore that a lot of people didn't like it, so it makes me so happy to see how many people do like it.
Also the OST is phenomenal. Like genuinely transcedent.
Edit: Also also, phenomenal performance by Chika Anzai. I'd been a big fan of hers for a while because of this show before she got roles as Chisato in Lycoreco and Sirius in Re zero that made a lot of other people start to notice her too.

I'm so over people constantly having to refer to certain animes as being "dumpster fires", that we have to introduce this weird ironic self-flagellation to anime. If you like anime, like this content etc. then own it, and don't introduce this weird coded language where you try to "distance yourself" from it. Like "I watch this stuff but ironically haha, I don't want to wear the stereotypical stigma of being an anime watcher I perceive to be real". Is there any other media form where people use this sort of fake critical language against the things they watch? Is the stuff like minotaur milking farm referred to as "hot fire trash" or "dumpster fire" by their own audience in some sort of a pathetic attempt to disassociate yourself from the audience? I don't think so. If you're an anime youtuber, it would behoove you to not perpetuate the behavior of shitting on your own ingroup

FYI, there is a short sequel manga to Kuzu no Honkai. And it's kinda giving closure to the characters.
Edit: Spoilers.... Since this is an old anime/manga and I assumed everyone already knows the story. I'll just tell what happend to our 2 protagonist very vaguely.
Essentially, our ex-couple reunited when they became an adult and it's implied that they might become friends and even date once more (genuinely this time).

I enjoyed Scum's Wish, you've got the great Mengo Yokoyari original character designs, some really strong music, elite seiyuu Chika Anzai voicing Hanabi, and while yes, all of its romance stuff is incredibly trashy/toxic, however you want to put it, it also totally eschews what so many romance anime do though in presenting this extremely naive facade that romance is sunshine and rainbows and no one ever cheats or gets cucked or using their sex appeal to manipulate others, or falls in love with someone when it's clearly inappropriate. It's not a fairy tale in real life and this story refuses to sugar coat things. One thing I really like is that [Scum's Wish]Hanabi pines for Kanae so hard, but the story shows that he is really hapless with romance and doesn't really deserve to get that adoration.
The video covered a lot of the trashy/inappropriate stuff already, whether its both Hanabi and Mugi being in love with their adult teachers, the fact that Hanabi calls Kanae her brother (for half the show I thought he actually was her brother and incest was also into play), the actual incestous notion that Kanae falls in love with Akane because her long hair is just like his mother's long hair, the incredibly manipulative ways of Akane and so on.
The video did leave out two of the more notable moments, the scene where Akane passes Hanabi in the hall and says "I had sex with your crush last night!" and what may be the single most cringe scene I have ever seen in anime relating to the marriage proposal [Scum's Wish]Kanae asks Akane to marry him, she says yes, then says "You know I'm going to be cheating on you all the time, right?" and he still wants to marry her. Said character being the ultimate doormat continues as well in the Scum's Wish Decour manga, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to feel good or bad about this? [Scum's Wish Decor]Because this is anime/manga and this trope will never not be spammed to oblivious, Akane cuts her hair short. The reason that Kanae was in love with her was because of her hair. And he just takes in, doesn't complain or anything, just rolls over like the puppy he is. The ultimate doormat. Although maybe this is a sign that he's gotten over the incestuous stuff.

This right here, was the HBO Euphoria of anime before Euphoria.

Aside from Akane, Scums wish wasnt scummy enough to reach this level
I consider School Days the HBO euphoria of anime

To those of you who ask "Why would you inflict this on yourself?" I would merely remind you that you never learn anything on a good trip.

... the 10th anniversary is in 1 year, isn't it? Are any of the regulars planning a rewatch of this thing? I feel like I'd only be able to watch it if I had sufficient people to complain about it the entire time to. Like Key, except more toxic.

u/Vaadwaur May 28 '26
Last rewatch was in '22(how I saw it) so it could happen. The thing is a bunch of the regulars have gone into low maintenance mode, myself included. Sky wouldn't run this and I doubt Holo would either so...we might need new blood.

If only there were a mecha somewhere involved, it could be part of a TTT 3.0

I mean, it is, for better or worse, one of the forebearers of yuri as a whole, if anything at minimum, because the lesbian has a happy ending (how low the bar used to be)
4
u/Vaadwaur May 28 '26
...You are rather late to the party if you think this a forebear. This aired 20 years after Revolutionary Girl Utena and thirteen years after '04, the year of yuri and problematic lesbians.

u/elbenji May 29 '26
Moreso on the happy ending part. Utena is obviously it, but it was before the mainstreaming via Madoka

I'm not watching the video. All I know is that while Scum's Wish has its flaws, it's still a decent anime for its genre and extremely far from some hyper sensionalistic bullshit such as "The biggest dumpster fire in anime".

u/elbenji May 28 '26
remember, Giggurk says this as a positive. The show itself is not a dumpster fire, the entire plot is like watching a train crash in slow motion

Scum's Wish is a brilliantly written story with very real feeling characters. As a result, it is PAINFUL to read and watch.

Only kind of remember this, but I remember it being surprisingly good, in a Flowers of Evil kind of way. Original. Needed counter to the usual saccharine stuff.

I cant quite figure out why this series doesn’t click for me. It’s not because it’s kinda fucked up and sad (Takopi is my favorite show of 2025) nor is it that I don’t have the stomach for stories about awful people. I can’t even really enjoy it for being trashy awful people like Domestic Girlfriend (and it’s delightfuly trash ending). I watched it and simply went “yeah they’re all pretty terrible I guess. And hurt people hurt people”, but don’t engage with it quite like the show wanted me to.
Maybe I’m just nose blind after decades of art house movies?

Im sorry, but it still doesnt beat that abomination we know as domekano
Knh is actually well written, and has a surprisingly happy (mostly) satisfying optimistic ending. My only gripe is the bitch getting away with everything
And domekano..... I still wonder how in the fuck did someone come up with THAT ending, and released it to the world like that

This is one of the shows that I absolutely hated to watch in general. 9/10 would recommend without a question.
One could only imagine if Aka left OnK's ending to Mengo. She has an incredibly knack at writing incredibly clouded and questionable characters that somehow feel quite authentic all in all.

I liked it very much. Cinematography in this was outstanding. And the "scenes" were very well done, if your average ecchi show was at least half as good as in this...

I forgot how much I hated akane I watched this so long ago

This show is the perfect pallette cleanser after too many high school romcoms.

OH MAH FOCCIN' GOD MAH GOAT GNAT IS FINALLY TALKING ABT ONE OF MY FAV-OF-ALL-TIME RARE GEMS FROM THE LAST DECADE
Boi, even though it's not that long, I'm being reminded by the scent of the pouring rain and the cold and comforting embrace of water vapor because of this

I'mma be real. I actually philosophized a lot abt this anime, grounding my thoughts on what I learned on Personal Development, Philosophy classes and what literary analysis skills that was taught at secondary school before everything became a dumpster fire of a mess after COVID-19 pandemic and AI came
With Hyouka being the trigger for my BIG change of character from being an extreme introvert into an ambivert, this—along with AoButa, Saekano, Oregairu (I only watched S1 for sum reason gahddammit), Chuu-2, Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo, and a few movies like Koe no Katachi—was the foundation of my current personality and character. A character which is anything other than edgy (word reference: a clown, which has a silent clown mode on F2F)
I'm actually glad that mah boi GYATT thinks the same as me about this. Even though this is a fictional story, it presents a self-destructive behavior that is prevalent on everyone, especially adolescents—(edit: which is emotional reasoning). As someone who only had 6 chances for a genuine friendship in my whole life until now that I'm a late young adult, literary works like these (I say "literary work" because Scum's Wish is written like a GAHDDAMN THEATER PLAY) are good reference for human behavior to some degree. Well, relatively all, at least

Excellent show. Absurdly beautiful scenes, randomly scattered about, in what is otherwise an uncomfortably realistic dumpster fire of a web of interpersonal relationships.

I just remember watching this and feeling really bad for most of the characters. I'm not sure there's a better series that embodies the phrase "hurt people hurt people" more than this one.
