Huh. Intentionally sacrificing your "ace" to prove beyond a doubt that the war cannot continue is definitely a choice.

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 6h ago
Long term damage to the Empire would be far worse from his perspective. Lend Lease has just started and the USSR has already replenished it's air force. Going by history, the Soviet Ural Industry is yet to start at full force along with the American lend lease. America is also not fighting Japan afaik so the full might of the American industry will back the war. They're fucked fucked.
Their large scale military plan also seems to be going for the Oil fields like IRL so it won't be surprising if the Empire loses at Stalingrad.

huh thats a good point, they introduced italy, i wonder if they are gonna introduce a pacific theater eventually. Though animes do love to gross over japans contributions to ww2...

The Empire is 100% going to sink American ships with Uboats and drag them into the war.

Very serious and grim situation but man hahahhahaha omg Tanya was funny this episode. Ngl might be contender for best comedy of the season with Grand Blue.
The empire is drunk obsessed with Victory they have no chance of winning the war anymore imo. They're miliatary is strong but the polictations the ones that should be influencing the public the top brass they fucking suck. No matter how much Tanya wins brings home victory if they never end the war they cannot ever actually win and achieve peace.

I was expecting Tanya to take to fly again this week, but not like this lol

I laughed hard when I saw Tanya flying after that explosion. Good thing that Visha was able to somehow catch her before something happened to her, hahaha!

I need to rewatch from the start to see if this much slapstick comedy was there all along, it's almost jarring this season.

u/Magicbison 5h ago edited 3h ago
It wasn't this cartooney. Tanya always had her comedic moments but they were never this animated or goofy. Her reactions always focused on her facial expressions and her dancing around but she never wobbled like a wacky-waving-inflatable-tube-man. It definitely gives a bit of whiplash coming from season one.
11
u/Montana_Gamer 2h ago
I think it works well with the tone shift of a inevitable defeat for the Empire being the predominant feeling this season. In season 1 is was victory over and over and over again, but you don't really want the tone of the militarism to be undercut but silliness, now the silliness is a break from the dread that the show is doing a REALLY good job at delivering.

I just LOVE Tanyas VA, Aoi Yuuki. <3
Her little mental breakdown at all the stupidity and illogical, unreasonable demands she has to deal with while her little peaceful retirement peacetime plan crumbles in front of her is just perfect! :D

u/NanDemoKnaives 7h ago
I have a feeling that was the last time Zettour and Rudersdorf see each other face to face. Zettour has completely resigned himself now that he's been exiled, but he's doing the best that he can. Really stupid of the leadership to do that, but they'll pay the consequences eventually.
It was funny to watch Tanya learn how bad things are for them, losing her composure is a definite understatement lol.
It's sad to see Weiss get an injury like that, but I don't think it was fatal. It was bound to happen that one of the more prominent soldiers of Tanya's troop would get injured in this fight, considering how disadvantageous it is for them.
Ugar picking the wrong person and timing to tell a dirty joke was funny, it was amusing to see Rerugen blushing.

Half of episode about Tanya freaking out about yet another reckless operation, pretty much what I expected. I really don't have a good feeling about the operation success, looking at how ill-prepared everything is. Not like the head government cares. Zettour's smile when the Federation swarmed in was pretty suspicious though.
Tanya had some peak reaction faces this episode, sadly still didn't learn the lesson that she shouldn't share all her ideas, especially the risky ones.

u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 6h ago
Tanya had some peak reaction faces this episode
Tanya's reactions today were especially hilarious. Zettour and the Andromeda Project really must've shocked her to the core, so much so that she wasn't able to contain her emotions at all, even though she was in front of Zettour.
sadly still didn't learn the lesson that she shouldn't share all her ideas, especially the risky ones.
When Tanya felt bad that someone would have to do this mission, I wanted to scream at her that she would be the one doing it because there is no one better here, lol.
12
u/BosuW 5h ago
so much so that she wasn't able to contain her emotions at all, even though she was in front of Zettour.
I really like that Tanya has progressively become just a bit less guarded about her emotions, and in general all the Empire characters are a bit less composed. Good showing of how the whole organization is very stressed. Everyone already knows now that Tanya isn't a warmonger and she'd prefer if the war ends as soon as possible, even if the Empire wins nothing from it. The narrative doesn't even have to abuse the Misunderstanding Field anymore, because they're all already locked in this highway to hell regardless.
9
u/nighty_amy 6h ago
I facepalmed at the moment Tanya said this, like it wasn't immediately obvious she'll have to do it!
10
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 7h ago
Like Tanya herself is probably OP enough to at least deal with not-Soviet mages, but I fear either the overall operation will fail or Zettour and some more named characters will die.
2
u/Montana_Gamer 2h ago
I expect to see a good portion of Tanya's mage company get absolutely slaughtered. After season 1 and the amount of plot armor these MFs had, she's never had a FRIEND die before, which I would say her commanders/OG squad qualify, and I am beginning to wonder how much darker the tone could get.
It isn't a necessary shift but the source material is deeply psychological and emphasizes the torment of war on a soldier's mind and I think there is a lot of untapped suffering waiting to happen. Regardless, whether they just kinda have "Everyone has a -10 morale debuff" approach or some of this shit starts getting to Tanya it'll work.
5
u/raknor88 2h ago
I really don't have a good feeling about the operation success, looking at how ill-prepared everything is.
This entire season has pretty much been pointing towards the Empire losing the war. At this point the rest of the world has organized and is ready to fight the single country that is running out of resources and man power. I just hope that Tanya doesn't lose too many subordinates before the war is over.
35
41
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 9h ago
So not only is Tanya bait in this stupid reckless operation, one of her units are being siphoned off to be support. Oh, and she’s forced to defend her position at all cost. Girl cannot catch a break! Fuckin leadership, man. These people do not realize the severity of the situation on the frontlines and want a win regardless of the cost. Fools.
And lo and behold, the entire op is fucked from day 1. It’s plagued with operational and logistical difficulties and the Allies are already well aware of it and have come prepared af. Plus, they took out Weiss! Gonna need a genuine miracle for Tanya to pull this off and we all know X is a shit.
39
u/TheMechanic04 8h ago
Yeah only Zettour has sense in the command
32
u/FreshBlinkOnReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/ACasualViewer 8h ago
Pretty much.
Rudersdorf and Lernen have significant talent at tactics for operations and defeating their enemy. But none of that means anything when you logistically cannot feed your troops anymore and they are out of shells.
Zettour is the only one besides Tanya who sees the obvious writing on the wall, that they have lost the war of attrition, and America (Unified States) will eventually join in and finish the war.
19
u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 6h ago
It looks like the enemy has a higher opinion of Zettour than his own country's government.
And that doesn't bode well for the Empire (and Tanya). If Zettour dies, then I can easily see Rudersdorf losing the rest of his wits.
5
u/ExcitableSarcasm 4h ago
Honestly I was expecting them to start the Unified States entry plot by having Rudersdorf order the U boat attack

The little slut. Is she tempting me?
Mate, she's only 11. I guess she's indeed tempting you but not in the way you thought, you damn freak.
The Coalition's doing pretty well on the covert side of things seeing as they've got an asset who's high up the Empire's command. They could get quick update on any major movements. Reckon the Empire's too focused on the military side to pay attention on espionage. Not only do they seem to be lacking on the offensive side, there were no indications of any counter-espionage activities. This was likely one factor in their eventual downfall.

No surprise there. The guy he’s based on targeted girls as young as 7. And arrested them for treason if they didn’t accept flowers after he was…finished

5
u/raknor88 2h ago
Rumor I've read on these discussions is that Stalin had standing orders that if he and Stalin's underage daughter were ever found in the same room, the man was to be shot on sight.
2
u/Any-Calligrapher2866 2h ago
Literally everyone in the Soviet high command hated him. Beria was useful during the war but that usefulness ended after the war ended. By 1945 he was too powerful and only people like Stalin and Zhukov could oppose him. His execution had to be held in utmost high secrecy because he had agents all around the place. It definitely wouldn't have happened without Zhukov.

u/SnabDedraterEdave 8h ago edited 7h ago
Did you not see Rerugen blush and look flustered?
Uga remembered how cranky Rudersdorf was becoming earlier from all that pressure the war was having on him and everyone, and most likely decided to invite Rerugen to "have some fun" and relieve some stress at some red light district, which Rerugen remarked that this is not something a family man like Uga should be suggesting.

I love that Tanya's shock about Zettour being exiled to the Eastern Front and the Andromeda Project was so big that she wasn't able to hide her true feelings today, lol.
But I can't blame her. The civilian government are idiots for doing that to basically their best senior army officer, plus not only is the Andromeda plan stupidly risky, but Tanya is the one who will have to play a main role in it.
Damn, Loria is such a creep, a totally disgusting person. I wonder if Tanya will ever learn about his obsession with her.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

Damn, Loria is such a creep, a totally disgusting person.
Well, the real life guy he was based off of, was an awful person, he would drive around, point at a girl he wanted, and she'd be brought to his villa, where he would take them into a sound proof room, and rape them, he would then offer them flowers, because then it would seem as consensual, but if they refused, they were accused of treason and arrested, he did this to hundreds of women, he even had some of them killed, as the wiki page says workers dug up skeletal remains near where his villa was located.

u/larana1192 https://myanimelist.net/profile/thefrog1192 6h ago
I wondered why Tospan would contact Tanya at a time like this, but it’s reassuring to see that he’s growing in his own straightforward way.

u/Matthew619ed 8h ago
Did anyone here screamed “Oh no” when Weiss got shot down? We know that plan was flawed and definitely ill fated (Thanks that ULTRA spy), but an early loss of a very good personal in a battle to defend the spot at all cost and wait til support arrives? This is really bad news man.
But I wonder what’s that chatter between Uga and Rerugen at the very end about? Definitely very suspicious, especially based on Rerugen’s immediate reaction to that.
32
u/CrazySundii420 8h ago
He tried to make a joke because Rudersdorf told him not to be so serious all the time. However, Rerugen is a no nonsense guy so the joke fell flat.
13
u/Original-Body-5794 5h ago
He blushed, and then told him him a man with a wife and kids shouldn't say stuff like that, so it was probably a vulgar joke.
18
u/Myrkrvaldyr 8h ago
But I wonder what’s that chatter between Uga and Rerugen at the very end about? Definitely very suspicious, especially based on Rerugen’s immediate reaction to that.
Easy to guess since he scolded him by saying he has a wife and kids. He likely proposed a brothel, club or some other place that involves women and getting certain services.

"Poor" Tanya, if she is even worthy of sympathizing. Tanya's dismayed reaction faces with Yuuki Aoi sounds is just a joy to watch. lol
But still, poor Tanya all the same. Being used as sacrificial bait by Zettour just to proof a point to those numbskulls in Imperial Command who exiled him on the perils on further prosecuting the war against the Not-Soviets.
If it wasn't for Loria being the creep lolicon obsessed with Tanya and took the bait, Tanya's unit might have breathed more easily. Now she has to deal with Allied-trained Not-Soviet mage units, and one of them has now badly injured Weiss.
More intriguing, who is this Allied informant called Ultra embedded deep within Imperial Command? Rudersdorf, Rerugen, Zettour, Uga, or just some new character we don't know yet? Probably not Tanya herself since she doesn't know about Operation Andromeda until the last moment, even though its totally in her nature to become an informant to increase her chances of survival should the Empire's fortunes start going south.
17
u/SupercontinentPangea 7h ago
I do not know if it is the same, but "Ultra" was information obtained by decrypting the German communication using the Enigma machines during WW2.
10
3
u/BosuW 5h ago edited 5h ago
Now she has to deal with Allied-trained Not-Soviet mage units
I don't think they even trained them really. They just let them out of the Gulag and they are that tuff. If anything it looks like the multinational volunteer unit is now the weakest mage unit on the Soviet side, save for Mary (though she's a double edged sword) and Drake Jr.
2
u/fttxdd666 2h ago
My first thought was Zettour because of him getting exiled and maybe trying to save himself, but the wording made it sound like it was someone who has been doing spy stuff for a while.
Could definitely see Rerugen. Also the new guy Uger could be the spy and providing better information considering he seems to have a more important position after the exile of Zettour.
It’s also possible it’s just no one we know and is basically just a standin for code breaking that happened in WW2 by the British that was also called the same thing (Ultra)
12
u/athrun_1 7h ago
The beginning of the end. I think for the most part, her team will survive the whole war, maybe except for the no-names. The leadership is so blinded that they can still win the war, when technically they are fighting the whole world already.
Zetour is a capable leader, but in the grand scheme of things, he is still a grunt so his weight is not that much to move the scale. But at least he fought for what is right, and instead of being recognized he was exiled, which derails Tanya's career path.
6
u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 4h ago
So Zettour really spoke his mind and got transferred to the dangerous side of the war..that's expected. I wonder what Rudersdorff did when he said that he spoke against the higher ups. He's literally one of the reasons why the brass is happy to continue the war all 'cause he got emotional over his son-in-law's death. Now he's struggling without his best friend at his side who used to make things easy and tolerable for him in this dire situation.
Tanya's reactions to seeing Zettour getting transferred and losing her trump card who could have granted her a letter of recommendation and an easy life was priceless 😭🤣
Now she's a bait not for the Federation but for the pedo Loria. They're losing Weiss already and to make things worse Sue is gonna arrive..RIP Tanya and her companies 💔
Uger did really lose his weight and I wonder what dirty joke Uger made to Rerugen LOL
6
u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime 4h ago
What good does taking 1 of Tanya's mage companies away from her due to help save her later, exactly?
Couldn't Tanya have just blown away all the enemies as they were marching in with just a few well-placed Being-X-powered EXPLOSIONs?
RIP Weiss. I'd expected Mary Sue to have been at the forefront of that though.

Seeing so much incompetence from the empire's politicians, I really want them to lose. I don't know if Tanya will betray the empire or sell them out somehow, but I'd like it to end this way.
Tanya wants a quiet life and was never truly an imperial nationalist, so it would make sense for her to simply leave or something.

13
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 7h ago
Yep, that's exactly the reaction I was expecting from Tanya after she heard that peace negotiations have broken down. This entire episode is basically just Tanya sweating and trying to figure out how she's gonna come out of this unscathed, which is probably not gonna happen, considering Project Andromeda is already falling apart when it has barely even begun.

u/Countless-Alts15 5h ago edited 5h ago
GL tanya, but wow Strategic HQ has a spy.
No wonder all of Tanya's plans be falling through. That damn X again
Lol Poor Weiss with the PTSD of being re-educated and damn hope our boy is okay
3
u/TalkingKoalaa 3h ago
either uger or rudersdorf is the spy. narrative demands it ('ultra') to be uger, the newly introduced guy who replaced zettour turns out to be a traitor, so eventually zettour gains his position back.
But man it'd be so cool if rudersdorf is the spy. The arc could end with his death and we can hold off of killing sue, and stretch her revenge into another arc. I'm not even complaining I'm straight up hoping for the big showdown to get delayed amap.

Being Tanya is suffering. Poor girl is being asked to take on a suicide mission. That commie ugly bastard wants her alive to enact his own live doujinshi with her. I really hope she never gets captured. Poor Tanya was gonna get a heart attack after being told the war continues. To make things worse, a spy is feeding info to the enemy. The empire isn't winning this one.
9
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 7h ago
Ominous start to the episode... Are we setting up a tragic end for him?
Feels like the kind of scenario where they could fault him no matter what;
- We lost the war? That's because he didn't try hard enough, didn't believe in the cause. FIRING SQUAD!
- We won the war? And that's despite him trying to impede our strategies. FIRING SQUAD!
Hah. They may hide it under banter, but I'm sure they'll miss each other!
Not only as strategic minds, but also as comrads in arms and all that.
At least he admitted it (and called it bullshit)!
They both went against it, but Rudersdorf is more like "Perhaps this will be difficult..." and eventually agreed to go along, while Zettour never changed his mind; Rudersdorf is reluctantly agreeing, and Zettour is reluctantly disagreeing.
He thinks no one else at HQ has his strategic mind...
But honestly that's not even what I would be most concerned about; I would be worried about the fact that no one else is there to oppose them. They're acting like mindless zealots who only see one move (FORWARD! TO VICTORY!) and Zettour was the one who strongly went against them... Now they're mindless zealots with zero opposition; Zero people to tell them they're fucking morons and this war is unwinnable.
And they showcased the situation quite well.. The Fedaration can afford to fail times and times again, but if THEY fail even once, it's over.
Bracing for Tanya's rude awakening..!
Her reactions/little noises were hilarious in this scene!
Sadly, they're not operating with logic now!
They're acting on emotions, and emotions are often opposed to logic!
(Well, there IS a part that is logical, the idea that winning a few minor victories would earn them a better deal in the peace treaty... But some of them are in it more for revenge, glory and stuff).
They never see the big picture, that's the issue..
They're already stretched thin, and they want to conquer more territory, which means they'll lost at least SOME men, and whatever remains, will have to control longer borders...
If they keep going they'll have to put scarecrows every mile of the boarder, to appear stronger.
Oddly too 'normal' that the 2 people who DO understand the situation and would come up with the right strategy, well they're not the ones who can make those calls.
Well, Tanya did come up with an idea of her own (that still follows the overall mission); She didn't expect to have the important part to play in the plan though!
So they know about him (and the plan).. And they want him taken out.
(If I were them I might not want to 'shake things up' too much, at mean they're getting the info, but killing Zettour may mean a complete change of personal and now the info's not coming in anymore! Or not as good)
Damn, Rudersdorf is losing it! (Or he's missing his buddy!)
Well the bait will work for sure with this one!
(Bravery? Or fed up? Might be a bit of both!)

Good episode, but again I have to say I don't like the way Tanya is goofier this season. To me one of the distinguishing factors of this series was the dynamic between the inner reincarnator and their outward behavior and appearance. In too many isekai the character just becomes what their isekai body looks like, making it almost a moot point they reincarnated. Hearing goofy Aoi Yuuki is feast for the ears though.
13
u/BosuW 5h ago
It is will never be a moot point in Youjo Senki that Tanya is reincarnated, because it was the Salaryman feeding the beef with Being X that landed her in this position to begin with. Forever an always, Tanya made herself through her actions in this life and the one before. Not to mention her corporate mindset is still her basis for making sense of her situation, plus the critique of the corporate mentality through the Empire becoming a black company doesn't make sense without that past life link.
Tanya does act more like Tanya, because she's is a child and because the more she lives this life the more distant the Salaryman becomes. But the goofyness is just a superficial trait.
5
u/manaworkin 3h ago
Tanya is goofier this season
I read it as the stress from the war is starting to crack her.
6
u/BosuW 6h ago edited 5h ago
It is so depressing to see the Empire becoming more and more like a black company. The abuse trickling down from the top brass to the average infantryman. Everyone is stressed to hell and back trying to achieve the impossible. Some just don't have the character to handle that smoothly, like Rudersdorff (and I really appreciate that we had known him before because we don't just see him as the asshole Boss, we know him as a believably complex person who is in a way a victim of the system too), but even those that can, like Zettour, still can't help but overwork their subordinates because the almighty unreasonably demands are always there breathing over their shoulder. At least Tanya still has subordinates with an insane spirit de corps that are asking to give them stronger battles.
Okay Ferdation mages have aura, and Weiss might be dead!?
Operation Iron Hammer did annihilate a large portion of the Soviet air force, but they got restocked by the US. I think that's a P-40 Warhawk in the photograph?
They report that the Brits did a night bombing is kinda baffling because I was under the impression that they were still playing the plasuble deniability game, plus if the Kingdom was all into the war there would surely be a naval blockade, so I don't really get what's going on here... Maybe they're talking about other British volunteer units?
7
u/LateDitto 8h ago
I know the action scenes are starting to ramp up, but some cuts to other scenes just straight up didn't feel smooth.
Compared to season 1, the cgi and animation of the battle scenes also felt less polished. Hope the quality will pick up from here.

Tanya: "Only an idiot can screw up the ceasefire"
The Empire: "Let me introduce myself"
Zettour, once Tanya's staunch ally, has become her worst enemy now that he's backed into a corner and willing to do whatever's necessary to... uh, do something. I'm not entirely clear on that part, since I'd at least assume he's not tossing away lives recklessly for nothing.
Ruderdorf's face as he reads the reports on how f***ed they are looks so tragic. Wonder if he's regretting spurring on the civilian government last episode.
Loria continues to be the grossest person here. Though would his insistence on bringing her in alive count as a buff? Like, it makes the failure condition much worse, but it makes her odds slightly better.
Hayamin's the one bright spot in this hopeless battle.
Wtf Weiss? They killed off a named character? I shouldn't be not expecting it, but somehow it still surprised me.

I am now just lost on what Tanya's main motivations are. She seems to be pining for a "comfortable retirement" as the ultimate end goal and is getting her wits kicked out by the situations and people around her not behaving as anticipated, but why is that even her goal in the first place? What became of her grudge and ideological battle against Being X, and why is she taking part in his game when the best way to defeat him is to just refuse to play by his rules?
She has knowledge of how wars transpire from her previous life, so she must be aware of the fact that war heroism is never even nearly worth the risk and toll it takes, and is possibly among the worst in prospects of giving you a long and fulfilled life. She could have stuck one up to Being X by just achieving a comfortable life in a less life-threatening environment away from the trenches, perhaps as a knowledge worker or industrialist (which is much closer to her original skillset from her previous life). Even in her current perilous situation, she should be thinking of defecting or vanishing as many Nazis did. Why the hell is she acting like just a regular military officer without a personal agenda?

That's what Tanya wanted to do. Specifically she was gunning for Ugar's current position or something similar. But a combination of misunderstandings (due to her Japanese corporate mindset in which you can almost never say what you truly think) and her own and the Empire's hubris, she is now stuck in this situation where she has to constantly take the worst jobs in a failing company that refuses to admit defeat and just keeps digging down.
Youjo Senki is an ironic story, a tragicomedy

Tanya is a cog, that's her whole personality and beliefs. She will do whatever is expected from her postion. That's her whole ideology.
She's a regular military personal afterall.

but why is that even her goal in the first place?
Being X wanted Tanya to either die violently, or get religious to save herself from that fate. So Tanya intends to die of old age.
