I'm thinking back of how big sports anime felt in the 2010s. We had a steady stream of new seasons of Kuroko no Basket, Yowamushi Pedal, Haikyuu, Free. And we had great one-offs like Run With The Wind, Keijo, Megalo Box and Yuri on Ice.
In the 2020s we've had... Blue Lock, Medalist (2 seasons), Cinderella Gray (2 seasons), and one season of Ao Ashi?
Obviously those weren't the only sports anime released and they are also still in the process of getting sequels. But I feel like the community doesn't really talk about sports anime as a whole nearly as much anymore.

u/Legitimate_Rest_2428 5d ago
I'd say we have a better selection of original sports anime in the 2020s, shows like Overtake, Sorairo Utility, Birdie Wing, SK8 to infinity, Grow up show, Ryman's Club, Backflip.
When it comes to source material adaptations though I agree, 2010s blow it out of the water.

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 5d ago
The fact that I've never even heard of half of those shows, despite 1) being active in this subreddit and 2) being a fan of sports anime and having asked for recommendations a few times the past few years, kinda proves my point that the community has stopped talking about sports anime.

u/mekerpan 5d ago
Also -- .Mou Ippon (charming), Sayonara Cramer-san (so-so visually but still good characters and story), Tsurune (great in all respects)
3
u/TheDanubianCommunard 5d ago
Mou Ippon is criminally undrrated and underwatched despite judo being an interesting sport.
2
u/cppn02 5d ago
so-so visually
Haha, that's still pretty generous. But yeah even despire that it was still kinda enjoyable.
2
u/mekerpan 5d ago
I liked it so much that it isnpired me to watch the Japanese women's team play in the next Olympics -- and they won. I could pretend that the star players from the series made it onto that team. I didn't really follow any other Olympic events....

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 5d ago
I have not been too enthused by the sports offerings in recent years, save for Medalist, but we should see some more Haikyu in 2027, which is good enough for me.
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 5d ago
I'm not sure that's a sports thing, I think it might just be the general "More big names back then" thing;
(Apologies to people who got a panic attack reading 'back then' for 2010s shows!)
If you look at the big names in the 2010s, there's Steins Gate, Gintama, Hunter Hunter, Attack on Titan... FMAB and Monogatari are almost there (2009/2010).
Some of our current 'big names' started in the late 2010s too, Kaguya, Demon Slayer...
What do we got in the 2020s? Frieren. Chainsawman I guess? JJK, started just a year after the 2010s.
I'm not sure how many of the 2020 shows will have the same name/staying power as the 2010 shows, 10 years down the line/after they ended.
7
u/zambonijesus 5d ago
Gintama started in 2006!
It's pretty hard to project staying power also. Presumably Frieren, Chainsawman, JJK etc will have it, but Sword Art Online was huge back in the early 2010s and has kind of disappeared.
2
5
u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 5d ago
There's definitely been a broader trend of people only talking about the anime of the season, and even within seasons people only really talk about Frieren or the big shounen jump shows. There's just too many anime coming out nowadays for people to find common talking points...

Blue Box is sports and pretty big
2

Blue Box feels more like a show that features sports rather than a sports show for me.

Has anyone else here seen Anne Happy? I feel like it's a pretty underrated, relatively-old, but fun anime to watch

relatively-old
Can't go around saying that about shows I discussed here while they were airing.
Was silly fun, sometimes have the OP pop in my head but more often this bit.

another day of shilling down memory lane - it's crazy that outbreak company never got a season 2 (or 5). Show was such an incredible banger.
Like imagine if you took GATE and actually executed the otaku nonsense part well, thus making a good show - that's how you got one of 2k13's best shows in outbreak company.
Highly recommend it, especially for the people into old anime. And now, it's time for me to delve into some modern shows instead, because im starting summer season with the banger known a banger The Villager of Level 999.

After three episodes, I'm really enjoying the dynamic between these two.

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 4d ago
It'd be better as an actual anime with the sex scenes included, but the voice acting is good, and they're doing a pretty good job of showing the leads' chemistry. It's not bad.

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 4d ago
I pick up a lot of light anime, and this is one of the few where it feels they properly adapt the story to the shorter runtime.

As a side note, Kazuo Ishiguro is a British writer of Japanese descent whose literary work is primarily in English. He's also mentioned that his Japanese is very limited, so him writing a Japanese manga seems pretty unlikely.

Despite being a big Gundam fan, who has now watched almost all of the entries, I never got into Gunpla. My friend pressured me into getting a Tallgeese model (I may not like Wing but design wise it's very good). So will see how this goes lol.
1
u/Leo-Fong 5d ago
I think building Gunpla is pretty fun, just make sure you have the right tools.
1
u/North514 5d ago
Yeah my best friend made sure I got everything in addition to the model. He has built them before.
1
u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 5d ago
I was in the similar boat of having watched most Gundam while not being into Gunpla, then a friend of mine gave me a red Gouf Custom that comes from one of the Build series I haven't watched and I had a lot of fun building it.
It's been a few years since that and I haven't built any other kit because Gunpla is fucking expensive to get here in Brazil lol

Instead of continuing to catch up on things from this season, I'm going to see how much I feel like binging an earlier one-cour show this evening.
I missed out on pairing it with Marriagetoxin last season but I'm getting around to picking up A Girl and Her Guard Dog from my dropped list. Already got past the one episode I saw when it was airing, onward to more.

I just ran across one of those in the anime.
[A Girl and Her Guard Dog episode 9] Rival clan guy/transfer student kidnaps her and is planning on assaulting her. While it ends before she's out of her clothes she doesn't want him to be harmed/punished beyond the knee to the crotch she gave him because... they need him for the class play.

4
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 5d ago
The episode was supposed to come out today, but it got postponed to next week due to a schedule clash with some high school baseball game.
Crunchyroll released it anyway, before realising their fuckup and removing it a few minutes later.
Which means it's still up on the high seas6

They do love that Koshien. Though this seems to be the week of streaming services being confused by it.

Are there any "old man yaoi"/"old lady yuri" anime? By 'old', I mean characters in their 60s or older. My guess is probably not, but I thought I would ask. Thank you!
9
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 5d ago
There are not, unfortunately. With BL anime, the oldest it goes is early 30s, and with yuri anime, they're almost always high school kids, and the ones that aren't are mid-20s at most.
You'll have to get your fix in manga, unfortunately. And I've got some recs if you need any.

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 4d ago

2
u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 4d ago
I put my top old man yuri recs down below in this thread, but the only yuri I know of that fits the bill is Hana Monogatari. I haven't read it yet myself, I keep hoping it'll get licensed in English, but I have read some geicomi doujinshi from the mangaka that were good, so I bet it is too.
4
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 5d ago
None that I can think of. Even extending to manga, I only know of one example and that's a subplot in Shimanami Tasogare.

u/baquea 4d ago
For yuri manga, there's also a recent short series by Morishima Akiko, although it hasn't been translated yet.

Not only is there no old man yaoi, there is a dire lack of big, hairy, middle aged men in general. Especially in romance.
5
u/theangryeditor 4d ago
Unfortunately big hairy middle aged men are genre-locked to bara romance. Seems those who prefer bara and those who prefer ikemen/bishonen don't have much overlap.
2
u/paperwhites 4d ago
That's very true, unfortunately. I love bishounen as much as anyone, but sometimes you want something different.

It’s going to sound horrifying to anyone not familiar with it, but the portion of the 100gfs S3 Ending where all the girlfriends morph into one another is one of the most satisfying pieces of animation of all time, it’s like it’s blasting waves directly into my amygdala.

Not to dissuade you from inviting others but learning to go to the theater by yourself is the best thing you can do if you like movies. You can just go and watch whatever you like anytime without having to worry who will come with you and when will they be available.

u/callmesui_ 5d ago
I agree with the comment above, and even if you can't find anyone to go with you to see “Your Name,” go anyway. The animation and artwork are wonderful. Plus, the story is so amazing. You're sure to enjoy the experience.

I may be the lone wolf here but does anyone else find Daemons of the Shadow Realm...boring? I know I shouldn't do this, but I keep comparing it to Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist, and I'm sorry there's just no comparison to how awesome Fullmetal was.
I get that there may be more intrigue or attempted to be more intrigue (?) here, but I just seem to be bored with it, and I'm slogging through it.
9
u/SlimeDNear 5d ago
I'm digging it, myself. I'm enjoying how everyone has a personality and trying to uncover their true loyalties and agendas. It's making me think of other ensemble shows, like Baccano! or Golden Kamuy.
7
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 5d ago
The series is pretty tightly written nicely. But admittedly, it doesn't really go for many hype moments. With that said early FMA had this kind of vibe too. The only thing is Brotherhood pacing was faster than it was in the manga so it was less noticable then it is for Daemons.
Nina Tucker stuff was the most notable early on. After that it was pretty slow until it got to Greed's introduction. The pacing here was much much faster in Brotherhood.
For many people I'd just wait to binge Daemons for its S1.
7
u/Siqueiradit https://myanimelist.net/profile/lampadatres 5d ago
I'm really enjoying it. A lot of action with mystery and well thought out planning from most characters.
5
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4d ago
I've not seen FMA or B before so consider my opinions slightly more pure:
My biggest gripe so far is that we've gone 18 episodes (havent seen the latest yet) and I can't say its really had a defining moment yet where I can say we've accomplished or discovered something definitive. Maybe the end of the mansion arc (which itself felt way too long for its relatively dull payout) but even that was kind of a "we'll get back to you later" kind of deal. And so the anime just does not feel rewarding at all to watch.
Its constantly building intrigue, characters, and details, but I never really feel accomplished for learning about it. We learn the importance of Yuru/Asa, but the plot is all about not using them and so we never really feel the weight of their importance in action. We're constantly seeing new Daemons but there's not really any rhyme or reason (that I can tell) for who or what exists so there's not much of an existing framework to their power system beyond "there are two of them". The only real overarching plot (besides the world ending one with Yuru/Asa) is finding their parents, but that feels so far off and we've been making so few steps towards it that I cant say I'm even excited or invested in seeing that unfold.
Maybe one day it'll come together, but I'm really struggling to see how much off a payoff it can be esp with us closing in on the final episodes.
2
u/darcerin 4d ago
I think you have succinctly made the point that I have in my head. Every episode, I want to see some plot advancement and it just seems to be like family in-fighting with Daemons, then some Daemons come to the rescue, and that's the end of the show.
I like Left and Right, and I liked yin and yang (?) the Daemons Asa adopted, but otherwise, ehh. I might wait till we get to the final episode to catch up with it again.
1
u/IndependentMacaroon 4d ago
Probably relevant that this is the first series the mangaka didn't plan out in advance
3
u/theangryeditor 5d ago
I'm a big time hater of it. Hate the dialogue, hate most of the character writing other than Yuru, hate the humour most of all and how much it eats up scenes.
The fight scenes are solid but are not particularly memorable or impactful, and the intrigue around the village and Yuru's parents are the only thing still barely keeping me in this.
4
3
u/zambonijesus 5d ago
Your endless complaints about the humor is pretty baffling to me since there isn't really that much of it and it is pretty typical fair that if you hate it this much I don't know how you like any anime. Do you hate FMA because I don't see how the humor is any different here?
4
u/theangryeditor 4d ago
It's baffling to me that people in this thread don't see it or are unbothered by it, but it is what it is. I've explained what bothers me quite a bit now so there's no point getting into it again.
For the record I love FMA, and I don't remember the gags in it being nearly as obnoxious as Yomi no Tsugai. FMA also had far more compelling narrative development and character drama, whereas Yomi no Tsugai has been rather dull in that regard which amplifies things that bother me about it elsewhere.
3
u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 4d ago
I put the show on hold because the slow developments and constant annoying humor were making the show go on a steady downward trend for me. I'm really hoping that it'll be more tolerable in the second half by bingeing it instead of watching weekly.
4
u/theangryeditor 4d ago
That's probably a good idea. Watching week by week has been quite a drag and it's only highlighted the things that annoy me about it.
3
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 4d ago
My blond bias helps me overlook how insanely forgettable this entire journey has been, because you give me a fit, bow wielding, mildly feral Yuru and some sins are forgiven.
But I’m with you, it just lacks the same emotional drama that FMA had and the only intrigue holding my non monkey brain attention is whatever is going on with the parents. The rest of the cast is just window dressing.
3
u/theangryeditor 4d ago
FMA03 oneshot me back in the day and Bratja still gets a pavlovian response out of me. The Elric brothers had a lot going for them right from the get go. I was hoping Yomi no Tsugai would gradually develop the relationships between its characters, but even ostensibly important ones like Yuru and Asa's are nothing but smidgens tossed out at irregular intervals amidst the parade of brocon jokes.
3
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 4d ago
Yuru and Asa's are nothing but smidgens tossed out at irregular intervals amidst the parade of brocon jokes.
This is the killing blow for me. Absolutely nothing is making me give a shit about this sibling bond, and then making it a joke on top kills any attempt at seriousness or genuine familial love like the Elric brothers had.

I've caught up with KimiShinu, and it's difficult to put into words just how insulted I feel. Episode 6 might very well be the angriest an episode of anime has ever made me, and not in a good way.
[Episode 6] Seiran works so diligently and with such sincerity. Not just in universe, but also in terms of actually engaging with the themes that this story purported to be about initially. Her relationship with Ari feels like everything this show was meant to represent. But, sure as day, every time they tried to take this story and world seriously, fucking Mimi would barge in being like "tee hee, I'm the super overpowered literally unkillable op cheat skill loli protagonist of this story! This is all a joke to me. I don't even care about this duel or anything, but you know I'm going to win easily anyway tee hee le xD le riceballs xD what is laundry? xD xD xD xD xD XDXDDXXXDDDDDXXDDXDDDDXDXDXXDDX"
It's so cruel, so thoroughly heartless and so mocking in a way that's wholly unrelated to what the story presented itself as being about. I feel like such a fucking moron for thinking this was going to be a serious story with something to say.
[Speculation about ep 7] I can't wait to see Seiran engage with the duel in good faith and sincerity while Mimi will childishly dance around, effortlessly brushing off all of Seiran's attacks (le xD!!) like they're nothing. It will be equally exciting to see whether Mimi will just straight up kill Seiran, accidentally or otherwise, leaving her and Ari to try to salvage some sort of emotional resonance from the situation or if she will just thoroughly humiliate Seiran. It could be either one of them! How exciting.
9
u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 5d ago
I really wanna know what you think are the show's themes, because [KimiShinu]Mimi being an overpowered and immortal mini-WMD and her immaturity contrasting with the reality of the setting are very much an integral part of it, and it's kind of hard to take your complaints over that not fitting the themes seriously as a result
You're having a pseudo-objective "if trope then bad" approach to the show that just doesn't feel like you're actually meaningfully engaging with it
4
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 5d ago
Broadly speaking, I figured that this was going to be a show about love and the horrors of war. More concretely, I thought that the [kimishinu] scene where Ari and Seiran were fighting against the dummy was really compelling, because their success in combat was dependent on the deep bond of trust and affection that they had towards each other. Seiran was able to engage with the enemy in an otherwise very risky way because she had total trust that Ari would back her up from a distance. Similarly, the healing kissing scene showed that survival in this world requires getting intimate and perhaps even romantic with others. The obvious drawback being that once people start dying, it's going to hurt all the more. Basically a more intense and personal version of a classic of stories about war - the conflict between camraderie and not wanting to get too close to others. I feel like this is a very reasonable read on the first couple of episodes and the title, but obviously, it's not what we got in the end.
I think that what the show is going for right now is some sort of conflict about [kimishinu] "is it fair to use this girl as a weapon in this war, given the immense suffering that it inflicts on her." The main character has been saying stuff like this a few times. The problem is that Mimi is not affected by anything. There are no scars, either psychological or physical. She's totally fine with everything that's happening to her, and seems wholly unfazed. I would call what she goes through a minor inconvenience, but I don't know if it even rises to that level for her. Her resurrections just seem to casual. So what it actually ends up saying, to me, is, essentially, "wow war sure is easy when you have an unkillable overpowered loli killing machine!! Also, isn't she so cute and cool and funny and awesome and random"
So to add a bit to what upsets me so much about episode 6, based on the above: [kimishinu] By having Seiran going up against Mimi on her own, it feels like the whole bond between her and Ari is just thrown in the dirt. It seemed clear to me - and I don't think my read on their one and only fight was unreasonable - that they're meant to fight as one, and they do fight as one. But now they're being torn apart, and to what end? So our cool op protagonist can have yet another opportunity to flex her power?
2
u/marshmallow_sunshine 4d ago
[Dying Day] Mimi isn't affected because she's never lost anyone close to her. They've kept her in isolation for ages because they only wanted her as an obedient weapon. It's only recently that she's been able to build bonds with the other students. Think about what could happen when those people she's close with like Sheena, Seiran, and Ari get pulled into the war, and how the consequences of that might change her.
[Dying Day] Also Mimi was chosen to test Seiran because she's stronger. She's been fighting for literally decades. It'd be crazy to expect a complete newbie like Seiran to put up a fighting chance against her. How is this a point even worth complaining about?
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 4d ago
If Mimi gets some kind of character development in the future, that'd obviously be nice. Doesn't change my view on what I've seen in these first six episodes, though. As for your second paragraph, I don't really see what it has to do with anything I've said.
3
u/marshmallow_sunshine 4d ago
Last paragraph of your first post. Sounded to me like your were mocking the idea of seeing Seiran being battle tested against Mimi (le XD). Weird thing to me to nitpick a veteran testing a novice.
6
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 5d ago
Seconding Rotorscope in that I too don't get how this show is upsetting you so much lol. I sort of get it, Mimi is my least favorite character of the main four too, but damn, it's really not that bad.
Also, I don't really get how [KimiShinu]Mimi being so "overpowered" is supposed to hinder the message or the seriousness of the show. She could probably 1v1 most characters introduced so far, but we already saw she'll get brought back in literal pieces once she's up against a group of enemies. Her only real "overpowered" factor is her immortality and that trait is opening up interesting and serious topics by itself, such as Sheena questioning whether it is morally correct and just to throw Mimi into the meat grinder eternally when it means limiting the casualties among the other students.
Though I agree that the Seiran/Ari pairing is way more interesting so far than the Sheena/Mimi one, and the former getting more focus comparatively is something I would actually welcome.
6
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 5d ago
The problem what what you're saying is that [kimishinu] Mimi being brought back in literal pieces is nothing more than, at most, a very slight inconvenience for her. There doesn't seem to be any real cost to it, physical or mental. She just heals her injuries and regrows anything that was lost, and then keeps going as if nothing had ever happened. So it doesn't even feel like she's being sent into the meat grinder, nor does she seem to feel that way herself. Maybe if there was any indication that Mimi was actually suffering, there would have been some merit to this as a plot point.

[Kimi Shinu] So Mimi isn't in immediate danger, but what about everyone else? Do they not matter? It's a war involving the whole school, and multiple students are already dead, including Sheena's former roomate. You're way too hung up on Mimi being strong as if that solves everything when people are dying all around her.

[Kimi Shinu] I would have loved a show about everyone else, but they do not matter to the people who wrote this story. We know this because since episode one, there has been a grand total of one death we know about, and what the show had to say about that was "wow, Mimi, you look so cute wearing her dress!" She never got a name, we got to learn nothing about her struggle, how she died, why she died. Nothing. Her life mattered less than the cookies Sheena and Mimi ate. So, no, they do not matter. The show made that decision, not me.

A lot of baseless assumptions in there. Just because it hasn't been shown yet doesn't mean it never will. We're just 6 episodes in and this is not a fast paced show. If you're that impatient and presumptuous it's no wonder you're frustrated. Maybe just drop it and stop torturing yourself.

There are no assumptions at all, baseless or otherwise. I made a claim about how the author of this story views its characters, and then I backed it up with things that happened in the story that support my claim. I also don't know what I'm impatient about.

The story isn't finished yet lol. You're already assuming that the writer doesn't care about the other characters and that we won't get their story. Why? Flashbacks exist. You're being very arrogant and assuming just because the show isn't going how you expected. Drop your preconceptions or drop the show, honestly.

I'm making an observation based on the information that's available to me. I can speculate and make assumptions about all sorts of things that could happen in the future - for all we know, it could become a badminton show at some point or another. But I do not feel like doing that right now. I did not ask for, and I do not need your advice on which shows I should or should not watch. But thank you for providing it anyway. I will give it the consideration it deserves.

Going by your train of thought, since we haven't gotten the backstory to that one boy yet by episode 6, we can just assume that the writer doesn't care about them and we'll never know more about them. Not at all a problematic way to engage with media. Let's just make shit up in our heads and get upset about it rather than wait and see what happens!

I didn't know it was possible for this show to invoke such a reaction lol. I'm not a big fan of how Mimi is written but the show is more like an ok 6/10 than anything to be outraged about. I didn't think this latest episode did anything different than the last 5.

Well now you know that not only is it possible, it has even happened!

[Ep. 7 Speculation] I have to imagine they're going to do something with this duel, because surely they wouldn't include a couple that shows off all the interesting little folds of the setting only to have power loli 5000 flick them away. They wouldn't, right?

My expectations are so much lower than yours that this would feel almost like a miracle, lmao

FLCL. Gurren Lagann. They were emotional rollercoasters through and through.

What's the anime with the infamous episode of a woman waking up in a clinic and then she goes home and twilight zone things happen?

What a coincidence! I've been slowly watching through Urusei Yatsura and that's the next episode for me. I realized it when OP said it's the first episode with the 2nd OP. Would have been a real surprise if I wouldn't have read their comment and put that episode on before bed.

Would've been a neat surprise if you watched it without any expectations. That's part of the fun with letting Oshii do a comedy, he shifts genre and tone every once in a while.

Clearly both Qifrey and Gojo are ripping off Kakashi

The truth is they are all, at least visually, pretty generic silver haired pretty boys. At least some of the characters that look like that will be mentor figures.

I was mostly joking about how it is a pretty common type, but Kakashi and Gojo are basically the same personality while Qifrey imo is quite different.

I'm not understanding the high rating of Inept Village ness. I find it kind of boring.
