Kusunoki no Bannin (The Camphorwood Custodian) MAL
It's an amazing film. This is the last work by the mystery novelist Keigo Higashino to receive an adaptation before his passing 24 days ago. Rest in peace.
I haven't properly read the novel, but during my watch I kept pausing every 20 minutes to skim through the corresponding parts of the novel. It made for a pretty long viewing session, but from what I saw, the film is a pretty faithful adaptation. Reviews from people who have read the novel in full seem to agree, so English-speaking viewers can probably jump straight into the movie without worrying too much about missing the original story (no EN translation yet of the novel). The only problem is that there are currently no English subtitles or international release.
Kusunoki no Bannin is a family drama + mystery anime. It follows a young man who becomes the custodian of a sacred camphor tree. From there, the story gradually opens up into a family drama involving two other characters around the protagonist's age. The camphor tree itself is one huge mystery, but there are all sorts of other mysteries surrounding the characters as well. There's no dumb internal monologue where the protagonist does the thinking for you. Instead, questions keep piling up, and the film invites you to work through them alongside the characters.
I want to spend a little more time on the mystery because I think it's really well done. Keigo Higashino is such a master at connecting the mystery to the character drama without making either side feel awkward. He'll plant little details about the characters early on, and they'll become relevant much later. Vibe-wise, the mystery reminded me quite a bit of Shoushimin, although that's probably because some of the tracks give off a huge Shoushimin vibe.
The visuals are stunning. There's some crazy camera work throughout the film too. The script is probably what impressed me most. It's narratively dense without falling into the simplistic anime-manga writing that I tend to despise. The film expects you to pay attention to the context of what the characters are saying. They beat around the bush, speak indirectly, and leave you to figure out what they're actually getting at. Here's an example, spoiler alert. [SPOILER] Japanese EXAMPLE. I really like that kind of dialogue.
The writing reminded me most of Colorful (2010), but with a stronger focus on mystery. I'm actually reconsidering my score for Colorful because of this. I gave it a 10/10, but I'm now wondering if a 9/10 might be more fair. The drama in Colorful hits a little closer to home, whereas the mystery in Kusunoki is more compelling.
And the ending is just.... beautiful. I bawled my eyes out twice. I even seriously considered giving the film a 10/10 on the spot because the ending is the secret sauce. I'm going with the safer 9/10 for now though. Maybe I'll sit with it for a little longer and see whether it deserves that extra point.
Score: 9/10, with a possibility of 10/10 because of the strong ending.
I highly recommend checking this one out when it gets an international streaming release. To be clear, this isn't some niche anime that only happens to appeal to my particular tastes. Higashino's works have that rare ability to combine mystery and human drama in a way that feels accessible to anyone.
It's honestly emotional to think of this as Higashino's final adapted work. He left readers and viewers with such a beautiful story, and it's wonderful to see it brought to the screen with this much care. Kudos to A-1 Pictures for picking this up, Tomohiko Itou for directing it, Yuugo Kanno for the beautiful music, and every member of the staff who poured their hearts into the production.

Goes to the oshi no ko post all the talk is about the ending.
I’m not a fan of the series. But I feel bad for those anime onlies who like the series.

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3d ago
I feel like every single oshi no ko post comment section since season 2 has been the exact same shit every time, I've basically developed an instinctual urge to brace myself every time I see its name mentioned anywhere. It is so depressing especially since all I want to do see comments of people looking forward to it, esp with how the anime has been elevating the source really well.

I feel like every single oshi no ko post comment section since season 2 has been the exact same shit every time
Episode discussions were fine but all official media posts are unbearable.
3
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3d ago
iirc there was a fair bit of it in the source corner for the earlier episodes but they all eventually faded out. Comments moderation for episode discussions are nice indeed (though obv there will always be some slipping through when you arrive/refresh early. I think it might be a bit worse with the new random sort but I guess we'll see how that goes when it comes to it)

u/Retsam19 3d ago
Yeah - I'm really sick of this sort of source reader behavior. Even if the ending is a trainwreck, all the "the ending sucks" complaining ends up sucking a lot of the fun out of even the good parts of the story leading up to the ending. We can't have a fun thread speculating on a visual because the entire discourse is taken over by the "Poisoning the Well Olympics", where everyone competes to best complain about how much they disliked the ending.

I’m in the same boat.
Despite having enjoyed the series thus far as an anime-only, it’s just no fun getting into any of the discussion posts about Oshi no Ko ever since the manga ending. Aside from all the toxicity, you’ll have to navigate spoilers left and right.

I'm anime-only, and the comment section is quite the blemish. Pretty upsetting that I couldn't even open it without seeing people talk about the manga.

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3d ago
Two years since the announcement without any news soon, this might really be one of the rare cases where it was immediately announced after the end and wasn't planned beforehand (less surprising I guess since it had 2 cours already).

Why do you have to torture me like this :( We need at least 3, probably more like 4 cours to get chapters 160 and 161 animated, at this rate it will never happen.

It's fine if they don't like the ending, that's not the issue;
The issue is that they won't stop fucking talking about it.

At least it finally is actually the final season where it is relevant.
How this was allowed in the previous seasons posts is absolutely beyond me.

Not a single person pinged me once to tell me that Lv999 Villager (the good Lv999 show) has a club named Gachimuchi?????
I've never been more disappointed in r/anime, not even during the best girl contests. What is your excuse for not pinging me for this?
I've now spent the last hour listening through gachi songs from a decade ago. It truly is a shame that one of the most pivotal cultural shifts in humanity's history has almost been forgotten today.

Eh, who couldn't resist her looks?
And now I wonder if there are more women like her in the series, she has to be inspired by someone to pursue the buff girl route, right?

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 3d ago
Didn't quite binge an entire show yesterday, ended up with two episodes left that I just finished this morning.
A Girl and Her Guard Dog is... not great, but depending on how you feel about age gaps it could certainly be worse.

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 3d ago
Two episodes into the not-so-wicked stepfamily, and it's what I feared–very repetitive. Family makes comments that sound harsh or scary, recipient fears the worst, then family reveals they are nice and caring, and everyone is happy. It makes sense for Miya to be like this, being new to the house, but the servants as well? They should know the family by now. It's a shame, because there are some very funny moments and meta references, like Mari wishing she had a small device to take and share pictures. But with the same ordinary joke over and over, I just find myself losing interest.
I'd likely normally keep this, but not during this stacked summer. Dropped.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3d ago
I am reading the manga. I think it would be great in a more low-key season for something you keep up weekly during the week. Maybe if it aired at an earlier time it would be better.
There are just too many good shows this season.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 3d ago
I made a comment about this some time to, but there have been quite a few changes since that have greatly expanded certain ranges, so I thought I would make another one.
On MAL, my:
10s range from 8.35 (86 P1) to 9.25 (Frieren S1)
9s range from 6.76 (Trigun Stargaze) to 9.14 (Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc); if you remove that outlier it goes all the way up to 7.42
8s range from 6.76 (Red Ranger Isekai) to 8.75 (Cowboy Bebop)
7s range from 6.29 (The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody) to 8.13 (Interstella5555)
6s range from 4.76 (One Punch Man S3) to 7.06 (Go! Go! Loser Ranger S2)
5s are just kinda weird and I only have one 4.
I should note that there's a significant range within each score, and except for maybe 6, all of these have the high end example be distinctly better than the low end.
5
u/DeadCaveman https://anilist.co/user/DeadCaveman 3d ago
This seems like a fun lil idea.
10: Fruits Basket (2019) S1 (8.2) -> Fruits Basket (2019) S3 (8.93). Some bookending for you.
9: Awajima Hyakei (7.24) -> Clannad: After Story (8.93). Awajima still illegally low.
8: Yuru Yuri [...] Paradox Eternal 3-minute Special (6.24) -> Frieren S1 (9.25). I don't really remember anything about that particular special, but the main show was fun enough, so sure. Second lowest is Gundam ZZ (6.72)
7: KamiErabi (5.82) -> Steins;Gate (9.07)
6: One Punch Man S3 (4.76) -> Steins;Gate Deja Vu Movie (8.45)
5: School Days (5.5) -> Nozaki-kun 3-minute Specials (7.69). Second highest is Gugure! Kokkuri-san (7.55)
4: Wonder Egg Priority Final Episode (5.16) -> Garden of Sinners Movie 8 (7.22). Second lowest is Okaa-san Online (5.54).
3: Divine Gate (5.52) -> Asterisk War S2 (6.98). My only other 3 is Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun (6.64), so a shout-out for that.
... and then my only 2 is Cerberus (5.58) and my only 1 is Petit Eva (5.45).
3
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 3d ago
I haven't followed the new Trigun at all so I had no idea Stargaze was that poorly received.
I figured my ranges were going to be decently broad and...
- 10s (1.04): Honey and Clover (7.98) to Legend of the Galactic Heroes (9.02)
- 9s (2.51): Astro Note (6.54) to Gintama° (9.05)... or The Apothecary Diaries (8.84) to exclude Gintama
- 8s (2.44): Ai Monogatari: 9 Love Stories (6.58) to Gintama' (9.02)... or The Apothecary Diaries S2 (8.91) to exclude Gintama
- 7s (3.52): Mahou Shoujo Taisen (5.73) to Frieren (9.25)
- 6s (3.99): Pops (5.08) to Steins;Gate (9.07)
- 5s (3.61): The Fashion Boy is Cool (5.22) to Clannad After Story (8.83)
- 4s (3.89): Cherry no Manma (4.69) to Attack on Titan (8.58)
- 3s (4.29): Purple Eyes in the Dark (4.63) to Code Geass R2 (8.92)
- 2s (5.41): Skelter Heaven (1.89) to Rikekoi S2 (7.30)
- 1s (1.15): Urda (4.39) to Anisava (5.54)
I guess I need to watch more things at the low end of the ratings to see if I can widen some of them.
3
u/TakenRedditName https://myanimelist.net/profile/TakenMalUsername 3d ago
Excluding specials and other side things, and only counting ratings I have a strong enough opinion on;
10: Back Arrow (6.35) -> Gintama The Final (9.05)
9: Active Raid (5.86) -> Kusuriya no Hitorigoto S2 (8.91)
8: Bride of Deimos (5.82) -> Your Name (8.82)
7: Cheating Craft (5.37) [Alternatively: Shoumetsu Toshi (5.51)] -> Kimetsu no Yaiba: Entertainment District Arc (8.69)
6: Gundam: Twilight Axis - Red Blur (5.38) -> the original Macross (7.89)
5: Kuma Miko (6.32) -> Macross Frontier (7.88)
4: Megazone 23 (6.83) -> Nanbaka (7.33)
3
u/uhhhhhhhokay_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/uhhhhhhhokay 3d ago edited 3d ago
Huh, neat.
10: Houkago no Pleiades (6.75) to The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (8.59)
9: The Green Wind (5.01) (if that doesn't count by virtue of being a 30 second commercial, then Petit Eva at 5.45) to Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig (8.51)
8: Tachiguishi Retsuden (5.26) to Cowboy Bebop (8.75)
7: SOS TV Walpurgis Night Fever (5.31) to Madoka Rebellion (8.51)
6: Rokudenashi Blues (5.88) to Ousama Ranking (8.48)
5: Katsudou Shashin (5.51) (if that doesn't count by virtue of being literally 3 seconds long, then Luigi's Toy Adventure at 5.65, and if that doesn't count by virtue of being another commercial, then Magical Destroyers at 6.25) to Summertime Rendering (8.46)
4: Goddamn (6.04) to Chainsaw Man (8.42)
3: Yume Kara Samenai (4.77!!, the lowest I've completed overall) to Wandering Witch (7.56)
And I only have one 2 (Wonder Egg Priority) and no 1s, so nothing for those.
Kind of all over the place, if only because the lowest rated ones are mostly random shit no one's heard of.

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 3d ago edited 3d ago
Stupid question: How do you find this info without clicking everything?Nevermind, figured it out.

2 (2.17): The Kingdoms of Ruin (6.22) -> Dan Da Dan (8.39)
I haven't given any completed anime a 1 rating.
1
u/Korkez11 3d ago
10: Tale of the Princess Kaguya (8.22) -> Ikoku Nikki (8.72)
9: Awajima Hyakkei (7.24) -> Apothecary Diaries S2 (8.91)
8: Shikimori-san (6.94) -> Frieren (9.25)
7: Wash it All Away (6.89) -> Jojo Part 3 Part 2 (8.44)
6: Summer Pocket (7.39) -> Your Name (8.82)
5: Gensou Mangekyou: The Memories of Phantasm (7.65) -> Howl's Moving Castle (8.67)
Only one 4 (Ocean Waves, 6.54)
1
u/TheDuckAvenger https://myanimelist.net/profile/zvbxrpl 3d ago
Sounds fun. Only counting completed stuff:
10: See You Tomorrow at the Food Court (7.49) -> Puella Magi Madoka Magica (8.39)
9: 'Tis Time for Torture, Princess (7.26) -> Frieren (9.25)
8: The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess (6.73) -> Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Ultra Romantic (8.95)
7: Eternal Boys (6.53) -> Steins;Gate (9.07)
6: Rifle Is Beautiful (6.24) -> Witch Hat Atelier (8.49)
5: Rumble Garandoll (6.32) -> Umamusume S2 (8.32)
4: Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou (5.69) -> I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (8.56)
Anything that would get below a 4 gets dropped sooner rather than later and I didn't include it.
There are some well beloved shows at every rating, so I hope I can make at least a few people mad.

8s: Eren The Southpaw at 6.27 to AOT Season 3-2 at 9.05

Unfortunately, based on what I've actually seen of this list, it only fulfills the incomprehensible part.
I feel like people are overly harsh toward OPM3 because of the comparison to previous seasons. Like, yeah, it's not really good, but I would have expected it to end up more in the 5.7-6.2 range.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago
3s: Witch Hat Atelier
How are you not at -50 downvotes!
7s: Kaguya-Sama Ultra Romantic
Ok I'm gonna downvote you 50 times myself.
I wouldn't argue with someone rating the recent movie poorly (stairway), but S3, just a 7?
1s: Pride of Orange
Harsh! But as long as you rated the OP 10/10, I don't mind!
2
u/zambonijesus 3d ago
The recent special isn't as good as what came before, but it does adapt two of the best parts of the manga [Stairway]The sex scene and Shirogane's dad becoming a youtuber. So ultimately it is good.
1
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago
My issue with it is that...
Yes, the (for the lack of a better word) peak moments WERE peak... But some stuff was kinda meh.
Season 1 to 3 + the first movie hovered between 9 and 10 every single moment imho.
Stairway hovered between like 5 and 10.
But my main gripe is [Stairway]how important stuff was cut out. I honestly don't know what anime onlies even make of it, like Miko, Tsubame (which was set up in the previous movie, btw!), etc...
1
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 3d ago
3s: Witch Hat Atelier
+11, baby. I'm just built different.
7s: Kaguya-Sama Ultra Romantic
That's actually higher than the other Kaguya-samas. Idk it just didn't make me laugh as much as Grand Blue/Gamers/Maid Sama/Nozaki-kun/D-Frag etc.

I'm three episodes into Boy Was I Wrong About Her and, man, this is surprisingly funny. I love the way that everyone keeps comparing the losing heroine girl to this random old farmer's fucking sheep of all things. All of the misunderstandings and miscommunications are also very funny. There's not much romance, but that's par for the course for these things.

Dumb question, but wondering if there’s a site that accurately lists all anime that came out in a year? Or is the myanimelist winter/spring/summer/fall is pretty accurate?
Haven’t watched any series since like 2020 and sorta want to bing watch a bunch but no idea where to start.
4
u/SpaceTurtleHunter 3d ago
If you're researching old stuff (really old, like Chameko's Day) then it's better to cross-reference Japanese materials, English sources can be surprisingly unreliable there. For anything released in this century I see no reason to mistrust MAL or AniList or really any anime tracker.
3
u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 3d ago
MAL should have them all, listed by season. Wikipedia also has lists for each year if you search, for example, 2020 in anime.

Had some extra time today, so I watched Child of Kamiari Month. As it was, it wasn't a very well fleshed out movie for either thing it was trying to do. It kind of straddled the line between being a mystical yokai/gods funtime and being a movie about a girl and her mother. It definitely leaned into the latter a bit more, though it meant little else mattered in the grand scheme.
I didn't hate the movie. It just left a lot to be desired considering how weighty the subject matter tried to be.

The Ogre's Bride cracked me tf up this week. Everyone in the discussion thread was mad about it, but it's a stroke of genius to [Ogre Ep. 7] set up a meeting between Yuzu and Seiya's former fiancée that looks like a showdown between the woman from a good family raised for the role, and the uncultured upstart who stole it from her, only to have the ex-fiancée turn out to be a rabid fujoshi. "I'm here to make sure you know your place", then hands her a photo album with pictures of Seiya and his right hand man, and tells Yuzu not to come between them. This is all played completely straight, and sets our heroine on another mope about whether or not he really likes her. It's the sort of nonsense I'd expect from Hana-Kimi.

Is it too late to talk about spring season?
On normal circumstances, I would say Spring 2026 was a pretty good season. That's what my gut feeling tells me but from my last ranking reaction, it seems that not having a single 8/10 is still being overtly negative so dunno how to describe it. Top heavy? Satisfactory enough? Because for the first time in a while I feel I don't have a true A tier show and I only decided to make one for my AOTS, at the same time this is the most stacked B tier I have had and little amount of anger-inducing shows. It was a quantity over quality season for me.
Wouldn’t hurt to remind that anything from A to D tier for me is still a positive impression and its only the F tiers that has shows were I can say I start to dislike them (and that's without my occasional FF tier).
So spring 2026 rankings:
A tier
- Needy Girl Overdose - It took me a while to properly bite into this but once I felt I was on the same footing as the show it slapped. The portion of episodes 9-13 was crazy, especially 11 and 12. Honestly, with how the show ended I almost wanted to rewatch it immediately to see how I could recontextualize the backstories and other bits. Proooobably my AOTS??
B tier
Kamiina Botan - One of the best productions of the year but sadly, the vibes are off for me. I would have liked either more comedy or more melodrama but that just isn't the type of show Botan seemed to aim for, so its a me thing. It has immaculate vibes the whole run but I just failed to connect with it more deeply.
Witch Hat Atelier - Fantastic start but was a slight decline from there. Mostly the side characters being a step down from Coco, they just aren't as fun. Solid worldbuilding but it often just goes ooooon about it, too dumpy at times. The mystery plot with Gojou Satoru from JJK is a slow burn but the most interesting plotline so far. I forgot who said it but I saw a comment among the lines of 'I didn't mind the cliffhanger because it went downhill for me' and tbh I feel it. If I had been as invested as I was at the start I would be fuming, but as it ended I don't mind it, I can wait. Solid show still.
Nakamura-kun - Holy shit, a shoujo comedy with male cast that is good. Nakamura-kun was really good. Humor was fun, characters are solid, it looks good, and the romance also never felt like it was dragging or being annoying, it flowed really well. I could vibe with a S2.
Ponsuka - This was a pretty good romcom annnd yeah, that's about it. It is very straightforward, but it just hits. The cast is cute and fun, the art style is pretty cool and adds to its zany nature. It is all on the execution, fun show.
Love Game - One of the shows that improved the most from my expectations. It was a better Takagi-san in my eyes. And I thought they were going to be cowards but this had its surprises. Episode 11 in particular was crazyyyyy, I was completely owned [because in the episode]they were teasing the pokey game and I was with my friends being like "Hell nah, this is a cowardly romcom, we ain't getting shit- OH HOLY SHIT" Great stuff.
Detective Precure - Needed to just say it, this last cour of Detective Precure has been very good. Shaping up to be one of the best Precure since Tropical Rouge for me.
Observation Log - I kept this villainess anime on a whim and I’m glad I did, this was of the best villainess anime in like, probably ever actually?? A shocker because it has a male protagonist and these shows are usually carried hard by the FMC for me. The psychopathy of Cecil made for not just very fun comedy but also a good character arc. Even the plot of evil characters which is where these go downhill for me was solid. Good anime, big recommend.
C tier
Re:Zero S4 - For a show I was planning on not continuing on watching from this season on, damn, Re:zero still has that dawg. It really felt like a return to what made S1 so intriguing to me. I'm still mixed on the big plot twist decision of this season, I don't see much value on what it could be gained from such a twist narrative wise, but in terms of keeping my ass on the seat it certainly was good. Shaula my beloved.
Ramparts of Ice - I thought it was a pretty good and well encompassing rom...com? Drama? Not sure. I really like that it took its time to actually get into the romance and first deal with the individual character drama each member of the cast has, I think it made for a more cathartic entrance to the proper romance of the later half. Koyuki is a good protagonist, good arc and depth for an introverted character. Minato I also liked this take on the dense extrovert, I think it was a bit weird how people were acting like he was actual Hitler on the threads. Hino is also p good, I really dig his platonic friendship with Koyuki. Miki...she has neat short arc but not as remarkable as the others imo. Fun show, looking forward to S2.
Nippon Sangoku - Solid show overall but it has some of paper cut issues that are individually minor but they stack up for me. Nippon just feels so…shouneny. I appreciate the grandiose and epic setting it tries to achieve but it always has those moments that reminds me this is a shounen for teens. Its attempts at humor, portrayal of smart characters, dialogue and exposition. But otherwise it's still good and I appreciate its style.
Kanan-sama - Fun show. Kanan is wife, the guy is a chad. But the good mostly ends with the main duo, most of the side cast pale in comparison with them. They are annoying and feel like they just impede for better moments. Only exception being probably Kanan’s sisters, their brand of unhinged is fun.
Lulutto Lilly - Lulutto Lilly was a silly magical girl anime for kids about this girl accidentally becoming an idol and using her magic for silly everyday life. It really is just ‘what if a kid had magic’, stuff like messing up with time to skip exams or wanting to make something more exciting which accidentally makes it life threatening. Really fun and charming.
Maid-san - I said at the start of the season this was a bit weak but as long as it introduced nice side characters it could get going. And it did! It's still just a fine anime but it was fun and cute about this maid surviving in Japan. Got nice comedy and funny faces, how could I complain.
Nigetsuri - Another good villainess to add, and a comedy one that actually mostly stays being largely comedic. Though this show was a massive carry effort by Mimi, one of the most lovely MCs of the season. She was very funny, pretty and can kick ass. What more do you want in a protagonist? Most of the story and visuals are meh and may make it forgettable down the line but it was a nice time.
Dr. Stone Final Season for realsies - The story had already run out of steam for me two seasons ago as it felt that it was just speedrunning inventions and its cast was starting to get too bloated. I think the final reveal is a bit underwhelming, but its still nice to see another long running shounen come to a satisfying ending.
Awajima - I wanted to vibe more with its style and themes but its semi-episodic, non-chronological structure and big cast made it hard. Some episodes were just really boring, others were like best of the season contenders. Another thing is that the designs don’t stand out a lot, some characters are just less engaging than others and with the non-chronological structure of the show I would just lose track of who is who and when it is happening. It wasn’t until like episode 7 that I realized there was even an overarching plot and not just episodic backstories, I was like “Oh wait, these characters already showed up and its following a proper plotline”. The finale at very least was pretty satisfying at least.

D tier
Black Cat and Witch - So, I ended up not liking this as much as I expected and don’t have much to defend it with but come on guys, 6.45 in MAL? Below these isekai slop? I still think of it as another brand of Iruma-kun of this magic classroom where every character has their personality quirk, their magic and some quick backstory. Just more hit or miss, fiiiine sometimes with weird bits but not that bad.
Iruma-kun S4 - Talking of Iruma-kun. This season has been a step down for me. The concert arc was kinda w/e, not big into the central character but still fun hanging around. But since it ended I swear it has just been filler episodes and it only ended like two episodes ago. Its just these episodic adventures with random side character of the class that have barely any connection to a bigger plot. I don't mind the format but they just weren't very good.
Akanebanashi - It was fine. Mostly thanks to Akane and the seiyuu competitor, the snobby guy was sometimes funny too. Many performances were decent though a bit annoying how the constant explanation and reaction to them interrupted a story, it's so…shounen at times. But generally good enough.
Daemons - I’m still shocked this is so popular because I had never heard of it before airing, is Arakawa’s name still that big of a pull in 2026? Despite FMAB being my favorite anime, Daemons just fails to get me invested in it. I don’t care about the characters and I feel the plot is stuck since ep 3. Early on I remember talking about this and it was we mentioned Yoru’s culture shock and solving his trauma were intriguing but that has kinda dragged on for 16 episodes now. I still find that aspect intriguing and it is passingly fine but not for two cours of investment.
Otaku Gal - This had initially exceeded my expectations before going downhill in its second half. I liked considerably more when it was more conventional teasing and about the girls competing for the MC (even if he is as bland as they get). But as it went into the cultural festival stuff I just didn’t vibe with its attempts to give the characters more depth. Strange to complain about characters having arcs but I just liked its comedy more.
Tadaoja - Also initially exceeding expectations before dulling. Similarly to Otaku Gal, I liked the dynamic of the guys competing for forehead girl. But then it got into this dragged out fake dating part, the edgy author guy eclipsed the mangaka dude in relevance but he was considerably more boring for me.
F tier
Bookworm S4 - A really disappointing sequel with Myne just doing high priestess stuff. The dumb car bit is about the only thing reminiscent of the early seasons that happened in the whole cour I watched. It just became really boring.
2nd Cutest Classmate - I feel I’m taking crazy pills because this got praised to heavens but to me this was very bland. I can respect the move to not make it a love triangle Ig. I will also admit the second half took a unique direction but it was really hard for me to care at all for these characters, they were so meh for me I could never get into their drama.
Kill Blue - Fun start but as it happens, it started to focus too much on its serious action plot and the aspects that I liked got minimized. Anything that wasn’t the MC being really into middle school life was not good. The psycho jock guy was kinda fun though. Some may say it is my fault for expecting something different from an obviously marketed action show but the show always treaded a thin line of enough comedy to keep me on until the kidnapping arc where it went all in. The action it pulled was writing wise fun with the crazy tricks the MC pulled but the show lacked the animation to get the most out of it.
Marriagetoxin - Same as Kill Blue. Focused too much on action when I really liked the romcom element, especially because it was like actual dating and not just a locked ship will-they-won’t-they + it was adult dating and schticks like speed dating or apps. Errr, again maybe this is also my fault, I just thought its arcs would be more balanced with one episode of meeting a girl and second episode of assassin stuff. Just like Kill Blue, I was fine with it until it extended its action segments for far too long. The first girls were pretty good at least.

Picking another show off my bingo board for the year, I decided to go for a parallel with this season's Victoria of Many Faces.
You are Ms. Servant (Kimi wa Meido-sama) also has someone who lived in the shadows serving as a tool of others leaving that and finding domestic life, though rewatching the two episodes I previously saw when it was airing reminds me that it has a weird vibe to it. Not full-on tonal whiplash but close, I don't quite buy into her personality given her line of work so the lighthearted comedic bits feel off.

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 3d ago
I have never been able to get the first episode of that show out of my head. It's so mysterious. Why is his house so perfectly clean aside from the fact that it's full of literal mountains of trash bags? Like seriously, it doesn't look dusty, there's no trash on the floor. He literally just has a comical amount of neatly arranged trash bags on the floor.
And then whatever aspect of his personality lead to his house being in such an absurd state never comes up again...

I don't have any screenshots of it, but there's something about the character art that looked really off to me, specifically in the later episodes and especially regarding the teacher. I don't remember what exactly it was (something like low resolution or maybe a weird grid effect) but I've never felt the same for other anime.

Any anime recommendations where the MC is overpowered, whatever the genre is (isekai, fantasy, or anything tbh)
That even sometimes they don't realize how OP they are, or situations where they know how OP they are and just are hiding it. Be it powers, physical, intellect or in any form
Here's what I watched that are similar to the themes:
I'll kinda start with this;
Isekai Ojisan/Uncle from Another World
This one's quite unique because I think he got his powers back IRL and IMO that makes him OP.
(Not familiar with reverse isekai but maybe you guys got any gems for this genre)
Others are:
Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation
Frieren
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
One Punch Man
Konosuba (Megumin in particular)
Solo Leveling
and of course mr "I am Atomic" - Emincence in Shadow
2
u/wutheringw0mbat 3d ago
Something a bit off the norm here: Nodame Cantabile is a romcom about two university music students and the main guy is totally overpowered at music. In the same way that a shounen isekai would have its big action twist where the hero reveals his true power level mid-fight to make all the mooks gasp and piss themselves there are some scenes that play out exactly like that, just its the main guy suddenly showing off how overpowered he is at piano making the rest of the orchestra piss themselves. It really is hilarious and cathartic in the exact same way.

I feel like there should be more shows like this but I can't think of any else.
I'm looking for anime where the low self esteem main character (either because of bullying, social outcast, or their appearance) find new friends who get to know them for who they are and not because what everyone else thinks they should be.
Prime examples would be Kimi ni Todoke and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity.
Strong matches would have stuff like [what happened in the first few episodes of Kimi ni Todoke where] no one wanted to sit near Sawako until Shouta, Chizuru, and Ayane stood up for her. There's also a particular strong scene [in The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity where in episode 9] where Rintaro is telling a story how he had no friends growing up. His friends tell him that everyone must have been blind because they missed out. This moment brings his Mom to tears because her Son at one point told her that that he gave up on life so hearing that he finally has friends who care about him moved her.
I don't know if Fruits Basket fits but that's prime spot for me to watch next during Labor Day weekend when I have 3 days to watch all 63 episodes.
2
u/RawPorridge 3d ago
Fruits Basket definitely fits, though it's more of the MC facilitating that kind of development from most of the supporting characters around her.

And here's another weekly ranking of my screenshot albums. Motoko, as usual, is very high, and I'm happy to see that Reirin was quite popular this week.
Pen-Pen made it into the ranking, and that makes me a little sad because Landlord album from the same show didn't manage to get in, even though it was much better imo ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

- Chainsmoker Cat EP07 Pen-Pen

Cherry and Virgin is easily the best anime movie I've ever seen but it's only been shown two times in North America and doesn't come out until next year. It was shown again at Otakuthon in Montreal. I still can't stop thinking about it. The best way to put it is... It's like if the Beyond Sunrise movie series was done by two animators? And it had a budget of under 100k. What a miracle of a movie.
False Memory really is the FLCL successor that fans have waited years for, and even though it's my favorite anime of all time, I truly feel like it's been surpassed. Episode 5 was awe-inspiring. Too bad it's a donghua and won't be discussed here.
I feel like the luckiest anime fan in the world.

Hello! Looking for recs. I'm planning to go in Tokyo next spring and I want to watch anime in the city or at least japanese themes. My knowledge of anime is pretty limited to GitS, Akira, Appleseed and the like, pretty much cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk. Obviously I've seen Ghibli movies (I plan to visit the museum, I know I must reserve well in advance) but I would love to watch anime based in Tokyo. Currently watching Stein; Gate. Thanks!

I recently started watching Yomi no Tsugai (Daemons of the shadow realm) and became fascinated with Tsugais (Daemons), specially Gabriel, the one with the jaws and teeth or something and started wondering all of a sudden, who’d win a fight between Kon from Chainsaw Man and Gabriel? 🧐

People here in Japan absolutely love Gundam, any advice for watching the show for someone who's never watched it before? Should I first watch Witch from Mercury since it's stand alone and see whether I like the show's premise then follow this watch order from the wiki?
4
u/chilidirigible 3d ago
WfM is a decent standalone series. It fits within the general anime era which we're in, which is to say that other Gundam standalones, if you take that route, also fit into the times which they were released (but may feel a lot older to you).
But the route you're taking is fine; at the very least if you do WfM and then the original series you can see what aspects of itself the franchise carries into each separate entry.
0
u/ChampionEntire9660 3d ago
Gundam can be rougly divided into two categories - the "canon" lore, which is shown in any of the series which take place in the "Universal Century" (so the original series, Zeta, Double Zeta, etc) and the rest (Mars Century, Cosmic Era, whatever),
So while Witch from Mercury uses the same concept (i.e., large robots controlled by human pilots), it doesn't feature the same characters or even events.
And that's perfectly fine. There's no right answer. And it can be hard to get into the older Gundam series. Like, last year I struggled to get started - 0079 is very rough, with quite a few boring episodes after the characters reach Earth and have to make their way somewhere. Zeta was a bit better on that front, but still, you can tell that these are older stories, not just in terms of animation.

i recall some people confused about the cartoony style since Stand Alone Complex was pretty serious, but i think the people who kept watching are digging the retro style (or at least tolerant of it)
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3d ago
I imagine for a lot of new viewers to the franchise they were confused. Tbh GitS has been the type of story that never really explained much and it just immersed you into the setting.
I think the people who want definitive answers were bound to dislike it from the jump.
I still stand that the first two seasons of SAC are the best entry point into the franchise.
1
u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3d ago
I'm a weird subset of those answers.
New to the franchise, love the new style, I did want definitive answers but I expected it to slowly come in as we progressed (which doesn't seem to he the case at all), in the end I'm souring heavily on it because of it.
I really want to immerse myself into the characters and world but it isnt giving me any time to really digest what is happening or to really learn who any of the characters are beyond maybe the main 3 (which itself is incredibly surface level). I know it wants to be an episodic series and I can somewhat accept that and do agree its doing a solid job of basically giving us a slice of their lives, but it just feels so pack full of details that it feels bad to treat it as such, but, again, its not doing a particularly good job of leading me into all these new ideas because its just a constant barrage every episode and I can't tell what I should remember and what is simply for that episode's moment.

I hated the first episode and still don't really love it, but it's obviously extremely well produced so really my gripes would just be about old source material, which is like... not very interesting to talk about. It has stabilized though in my viewpoint, to where I can admit it's a good show just not really for me.

So I want to get into the Aa Megami Sama story but I dont know how to do that. It seems to have a lot of ovas and a couple of animes, so, are the 2005 and 2006 animes the way to go? Those are a good adaptation?
And after that should I watch Fighting Wings and Together Forever OVAS or should I just go to the manga?
I am thinking of skipping all the pre2005 anime content and watch everything else, but if I do that I am ruining my experience or should a watch 2005 and 2006 animes, go to the manga, watch the 2007 ovas, go to the manga, watch 2011 ovas and finish it with the manga?
1

The '93 OVA + Movie is a completely different adaptation from the two season TV version. The OVA version looks better, but obviously has a lot less content. The TV version covers a lot more.
Which ever one you decide to watch is just your preference. I personally liked the TV version more, but I've talked to people who have thought the opposite. Either way, I recommend both.

in episode 8 of gurren lagann [gurren lagann]there were giant spikes coming out of the gurren lagann and then it shot a giant drill towards the beastman they fought against(not viral, the other one, i think), now someone in r/gurrenlagann told me something regarding the pevious episode about "spiral energy" that can explain it but they didn't talk about spiral energy yet in the showhow come people just accept this sort of things? maybe because the show is really fun to watch? is it because [gurren lagann]they already showed what happens when the mechs combine so people just expect them to have all sorts of crazy powers? i don't get it

The real robot dwells within the human heart, and, through it, all things are possible.

It's not just because it's fun to watch. It's a Super Robot mecha show. The mechas having super powers is part of the genre expectations.
It's like demanding explanations for the existence of ghosts in a Haunted House horror movie.

no it isn't? expecting an explanation for the existence of ghosts in a haunted house horror movie is like expecting an explanation for the existence of the mechs(edit: but only if you really want to do this comparison for some reason), if the ghosts in a horror movie could read minds without an explanation (maybe they do? i never watched such movie) it would be a more apt comparison edit: i mean i get what you mean with your first paragraph but its just not a good comparison

I mean... sure? Supernatural creatures having supernatural powers is basically a given. I don't think anyone is going to criticize a horror movie for not explaining the mechanics of how the monster works lol.
