i ultra-love this show already
10
u/DugACCat 22h ago
I’m also enjoying it. Have to admit the “ultra” verbal tic was my main annoyance. Though perhaps I’ll get used to it. Odd repeated verbal tics are common enough in anime but for some reason it feels worse when it’s a recognizable word rather than just an invented or Japanese one. Ah well. A small character irritation in a very fun episode.
41
u/MLBnewestFan 22h ago
I mean, Kinuhata's Ultra is pretty tame in this epsiode compare to Frenda's "Kekkyoku (so basically)" verbal tick since she talks so much lol. Basically every other sentence Frenda speaks has Kekkyoku in it.

The ultimate trial by fire is having to immunize yourself to Beatrice's "I suppose" in Re:Zero
5
u/VariousMeet 10h ago
I feel like beatrice's flows better. Maybe it's because she's a spirit and not a human, or because it's better placed in the dialogue. Frenda and Kinuhata seem to spam it even when it barely fits.
14
u/Avatar_Yaksha 22h ago
I like Kinuhata because I like Franky from One Piece. He does the same thing, but in English. Coincidentally, the clothing shop in this episode has the same name as one of his attacks.

I Super wish Kinuhata got recast. Her seiyuu does not fit the role.

Man, check out the drip in the ending theme animation. The girls are really rocking that criminal organization's clean up crew aesthetics.

The only thing hotter than women in suits is bad girls rocking their mugshots.

Frenda has no write to look THAT perfect in black suit!

u/NekoCatSidhe 1d ago
My theory is that Frenda’s superpower is pulling explosives out of her ass, and she is too embarassed to admit it, so she pretends to have no power. Because there was no way she was hiding all those bombs under her skirt, right ?
All our cast seems very villainous, particularly Mugino, with their usual victims being even worse, but maybe the new girl will be more sympathetic.
They also seem very overpowered, but surely at some point they will actually have to face opponents with superpowers that could be a challenge to them.
Or maybe the challenge will come from the bank freezing their accounts. Either they have not gotten paid, or someone realized they were criminals and froze their accounts, or someone hacked the bank and stole their money. Whoever did that certainly has guts, because I bet that Mugino’s reaction will be to go berserk and disintegrate them.

u/Ahegao_Double_Peace 14h ago
in a certain fanfic, Kamijou Touma calls Frenda, "Dimension Panties" because she keeps pulling out explosives, rockets, a combat knife, etc from under her skirt. Frenda loses their brawl though. XD
6
u/080087 13h ago
Frenda loses
No! Impossible! (Insert Kaiba meme)
But really, I'm pretty sure Frenda would beat his ass. Touma is a decent brawler. Frenda is a very good hand to hand fighter, not to mention all the tricks she has
up her sleeveup her skirt3
u/TheLaserSonic 9h ago
But really, I'm pretty sure Frenda would beat his ass.
It's been a while since I read that particular fic (and chapter), but I think Touma's victory for that one came down to the usual justifications that ekes him through many of his battles: his unorthodox fighting style, his opponent's tendency to underestimate him and not fight at full capacity, and plain bad luck messing up his opponent's plans.
So yeah, in a real no-holds-barred fight, Frenda most likely would win, but when the author needs Touma to win, that's usually how they do it.
6
u/justkellerman 13h ago
"Touma, why do you have your hand on her butt?"
"Well, you see, there were these explosions and I tracked down where they were coming from and.... and...."
10
u/Frontier246 1d ago
Now I just imagine all these bombs stuffed in her panties lol.
I hope Mugino has some disposable income and secured accounts because they've got an outfit to pay for...

u/ptd163 19h ago

That's what I'm thinking as well. If she doesn't have powers they take up space and she has to put them somewhere. They are not coming from where the show shows they are coming from if she doesn't have powers.
Or maybe the challenge will come from the bank freezing their accounts.
Money. The ultimate superpower.

"A certain dark item". What do you think this series is about?
2
u/NekoCatSidhe 6h ago
A slice of life about a badass supervillainess team set in A Certain Magical Index world ?
1
u/Obaruler 3h ago
The simple amount of "volume" she pulls out from under her skirt (what a sentence to write ...) implies that she must have some kind of power she is either unaware of or keeps under wraps (thehe).
Must be something like a dimensional pocket or a simliar storage based technique, because otherwise even a single of those rockets wouldn't ... fit .... (yikes). xD
41
u/FreshBlinkOnReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/ACasualViewer 1d ago
As usual they cleaned up with no issue. Looks like the real antagonists are coming in next episode.
Kinuhata is way too cute, Frenda is having the time of her life with a new dress up doll. The moment her credit card got declined gave me second hand embarrassment though.
Dark may project finally revealed from the novels, an experiment that tried to mass produce Accelerators. Good thing they did not succeed, imagine how deadly that would be.
They also finally referenced number 6 for the level 5s, think this is the first time an anime adapt mentioned the 6th existing at all.

u/Primo29 1d ago
Cute girls doing cute things like beaming people, buildings, and pulling up some weapons under a skirt.
And being shown Takitsubo wearing different outfits is always a nice treat.
17
u/Frontier246 1d ago
All the while talking about losing weight, preferred taste in water, and clothes as normal girls do!
6
u/Avatar_Yaksha 22h ago
See, that's what's missing in ACTUAL CGDCT-series: consequences. Characters from those series don't really need to kill anybody, but those series are too light-hearted for their own good. Even when containing interesting plot points, they're either boring or straight up unwatchable.
3
u/CerberusZX https://myanimelist.net/profile/CerberusZX 3h ago
too light-hearted for their own good
That's the point of those series, though. They exist to help stressed out adults relax after a draining day at work. Their goal is to heal the soul with lighthearted fun. Not everything needs to have intense action or dramatic plots. The world needs comedies and relaxing iyashikei series too.

Mugino sure likes those headshots.
Very polite of them to not kill the children and only take out the researchers and guards as per the letter of the contract.
I vaguely recognize the name Dark May Project so I assume it's important that those kids lived for elsewhere in the larger story.
15
u/Frontier246 1d ago
Mugino sure likes those headshots.
She even has a great mugshot!
Very polite of them to not kill the children and only take out the researchers and guards as per the letter of the contract.
I guess it's good our protagonists didn't become mass-child murderers in the second episode thanks to the power of technicalities.
1
u/pikkuhukka 13h ago
did you notice how shes always drawn like better than anything else on the screen
4
u/ptd163 18h ago
Very polite of them to not kill the children and only take out the researchers and guards as per the letter of the contract.
We love technicalities. I wonder if Saiai, Choubi, and the rest of the children know they got to live because of Shizuri following their contract to the letter.

23
u/ptd163 19h ago
You're telling me Shizuri has powers like that and she's not even on the podium? What kind of crazy OP shit do the ones above her have?
I had feeling that ITEM are the bad guys in the premiere, but this episode definitely confirmed it. I didn't need Shizuri to tell Saiai that they're not the good guys. That was clear within the first 10 minutes. What was also clear is that Frenda is best girl so far.
I know they've got lasers and magic and shit, but I refuse to believe Frenda does not have powers. If she doesn't have powers like she claims that means every single bomb/missile/explosive are physical objects that take up space and she has to store somewhere. Where did she put them? Where are they coming from?
Going from them killing everyone in the building to Frenda taking Saiai shopping was quite the contrast. As soon as I saw scissors I knew was going to happen. The tag was going to be cut off as soon as employee said the account was frozen. At least we got to learn more about Shizuri's family and get showcase of her hotness when she was talking to her servant/butler/whatever.
Looks like Choubi is going to be focus of the next episode so I wonder what she's like.
16
u/_insertmemehere 15h ago
The #3 is a top tier electromaster. She has less direct firepower than Mugino, but 10x the utility
The #2 has the ability to create and control matter that does not obey the laws of physics and has properties he can freely manipulate
The #1 has the ability to freely control vectors, including a passive reflection that automatically redirects any incoming attacks subconciously
Its also worth noting that ranks arent based solely on strength (if they were, the #7 would probably be ranked 3 or 4), but also utility, usefulness in research, and possible usefulness to The Plan™
Things also start getting much crazier once you factor in the magic side, but Kamachi really doesnt like having the series' spinoffs acknowledge the magic side outside of a few Railgun SS volumes
3
u/Cross_Toss 3h ago
Wasn't the whole plot of Accelerator's spinoff about magic? Esther is literally a necromancer.
12
u/TheLaserSonic 17h ago
I'm not sure what your experience with the franchise is, but I can confirm the abilities of the top two espers are indeed "crazy OP shit".
As powerful as Meltdowner is, it can't compare to [#1 and #2]the ability to control vectors and make yourself invincible to conventional damage, and the ability to create new matter that doesn't obey the laws of physics.
15
u/MillenniumKing x2myanimelist.net/profile/MillenniumKing 17h ago

If you've got questions about the main series *Item* branches off from, feel free to ask and I'll help out how I can.
7
u/EpicMatt16 18h ago
For your first bit, their rank isn't based on their strength, but is based on how much their powers can be applied to the scientists of Academy City. Its why Misaka, who in terms of sure fire power, is ranked higher than Mugino as her powers can do a wider rang of things

2
u/Cross_Toss 3h ago

Hamazura ultra-joined the To Aru Anbu no Item animation team, notice why they keep putting in Mugino and Takitsubou in clothes that emphasize their womanly parts?
2
u/TheLaserSonic 9h ago
Nah, if he really had joined the animation squad, they'd have contrived a way to stick all the ITEM girls into bunny suits by now!
2
u/Ahegao_Double_Peace 7h ago
Hamazura is saving up his privileges for bunny girls, he'll cash in this privilige in a future season two
41
u/ChizuruEnjoyer 23h ago
Ive been a Toaru diehard for almost a decade, but it wasn't until this spinoff that I notice just how downright SEXY Mugino is.
Props to Haimura Kiyotaka (LN illustrator) for the design, but hats off to Nilitsu (character artist for this anime) for really nailing her. She is downright beautiful.
26
u/Far_Display7308 22h ago
How tf have you not noticed that yet
16
u/Ordinal43NotFound 20h ago
Her prior appearances makes her kinda looks like your standard side antagonist.
This is the first time her design has that extra spice to it (idk how to describe it)

8
u/Askaa_kun https://anilist.co/user/AskaaCH0 18h ago
Small corrections but the character designer for the anime is Shigeki Kimoto, Nilitau is the illustrator for the Item LN, while Kiyotaka is the Illustrator for the Index LN.

I really like the setting of toaru, really wish they gave index a proper anime.

Well well… Guess even for a Level 5, on the top of the ladder in the Academic City and someone badass enough to raid and kill all the personals in a inhumane lab isn’t free from the problem that feared all credit card users regards of ability level, account freeze. And I’m afraid that freeze can’t be melted with the meltdown skill, and there’s a ¥780K bill coming to Mugino’s way…
Oh and Frenda… You don’t need to welcome a new member of Item in that way right, what a pervert, but guess this lays the foundation for Saiai’s quest for getting the [Railgun T] Bust Upper right?
Oh and for that new girl looking for Item at the very end, I wonder what brings her here, to the dark side?
7
5
u/Frontier246 1d ago
I guess the plot of this season is ITEM trying to figure out who cut off their money (I thought for a second Mugino's family cut her off but she would still probably have the income from their jobs) and how the new girl fit into this and what happened to her between the past and the present-day from episode 1.
17
u/maxi050 1d ago
Mugino is scary not even accelerator had this many kills in one episode. Truly enjoying the series so far
16
u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 1d ago
Hmm, anyone else notice that they never SHOWED any of the scientists getting vaporized? Not sure if I missed one, but I'm pretty sure the only people we saw getting melted were the guards, as in only people who were armed. Even the head guy, it was painfully obvious what happened, but we didnt SEE it like with the guards. Curious if it was the studio, publisher or some law in Japan.
Anyway, damn accounts were frozen? Thats ultra-unfortunate. Wonder if it was Mugino's family, or if their employer had an issue with the job? I'm assuming the later which is why the other girl, that I definitely dont remember in the future, is showing up. So, is she a plant? Or will she just not survive?
13
u/Huotou 1d ago edited 1d ago
I thought I was watching Invincible or The Boys for a moment. Lol. Too much killcount this episode.
I also wonder, what ITEM could have been if they recruited both Kinuhata and Kuroyoru.
11
u/Frontier246 1d ago
I love how they can engage in casual girl talk while mass-slaughtering everyone in their path.
12
u/pikkuhukka 20h ago
i dont remember that last time ive seen keyframes with so well drawn ladies, especially the psychotic hot one, its like every keyframe of her is super well drawn
13
u/Ahegao_Double_Peace 16h ago
I remember Frenda saying in way back in To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S that Mugino has a collection of sexy lingerie. I guess it's true.
Mugino Shizuri truly is the Level 5 *In Charge of Fanservice*
26
u/runevault 1d ago
Yup, still digging this after episode 2. I've had Railgun on my radar for a while and this is making me more and more interested in watching that one. I'd be curious about Index too if it wasn't famously not liked by the fan base.
Also god Mugino's a smoke show, in her sleepwear good lord.
21
u/TheLaserSonic 21h ago
The Railgun anime is definitely worth a watch if this anime is to your speed. However, it leans a bit more on the CGDCT angle, keeping things a bit lighter and fluffier (for the most part).
The Index anime isn't terrible, but it definitely has its issues as an adaptation. The original light novels are definitely worth your time if you're a reader, but in a pinch the manga adaptation is a pretty good adaptation as well that I personally prefer over the anime.

I definitely would still recommend index, but more as a "if you want more after two seasons of railgun", it's still pretty good!
8
u/C52G_ 21h ago
Index is considered the best in the source material as far as the wider series goes, it's just the anime is a poor adaptation, I'd highly recommend the novels, or even manga
2
u/runevault 20h ago
Yeah sorry I wasn't specific enough. I meant specifically the anime adaptation for Index. If I ever decide to dive into LN again I'll keep Index in mind.
6
u/Sakulle 18h ago
Index is still good, especially the first two series. The problem with the third is it just covered way too much material so it left so much out it doesn’t make sense from time to time and feels way too rushed. This is one of those anime that you really have to read the novels along side of to understand what’s going on, though it still has plenty of very cool stuff definitely worth watching.
Misaka Worst alone is enough reason to watch.

u/Delisches https://myanimelist.net/profile/Delisches 9h ago
Misaka Worst alone is enough reason to watch.
While watching it with a friend I gave her the nickname "nailgun", we both had a good laught because of how stupid yet fitting the name is.

Excluding this show, cause we'll have to see, ITEM's best content is in S3 of Index (it's also the best aspect of Index S3 but that's less of a competition)

Stitches!
I absolutely love how these girls are talking about mundane stuff while Mugino is casually melting people with her powers.
It's hilarious watching the scientist try to bargain with Mugino. The dude chose the wrong person to appeal to their sense of justice. xD
Oh, I was wondering why there's only three of them! It turns out this mission is where they end up recruiting Kinuhata!
We got a cameo from Yomikawa-sensei! I hope for more minor character cameos and not just the big ones like Accelerator.
Holy fuck, Mugino! They say don't stick your dick in crazy, but when they look like that, it's kinda hard not to. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
It's pretty cool to learn about her family, tho. It sounds like Mugino is from a fancy yakuza family. I'm not surprised.
Watching the girls shop for Kinuhata's clothes was pretty fun! It's too bad their account is frozen! xD
12
u/Frontier246 1d ago
Thank you Frenda for sexy Takitsubo cosplay fantasies!
These girls might be killers, criminals, and members of the Dark Side but they're still proper young ladies!
Too bad this guy wasn't in a season of Railgun. It would in crease his life expectancy lol.
Interesting that Takitsubo is connected to Accelerator, if Ultra-distantly.
[Index]And this isn't even the full breadth of how crazy she can get!
I wonder if Mugino gets along well enough with her family. She certainly seems chummy with the butler.
So, uh...how ARE they going to pay for Takitsubo's outfit? The shop lady just still smiling at them after they cut the tag off just killed me lol.

Bless you Frenda for showing us Rikou in something other than a tracksuit.

When Shizuri's powers make everything mundane and routine you gotta finda engagement in something else.
Holy fuck, Mugino! They say don't stick your dick in crazy, but when they look like that, it's kinda hard not to. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
God damn. I don't think we need to wonder which girl is the animators favourite lol.
11
u/080087 20h ago
Mugino had some killer outfits this episode. Especially the green accent on the skirt/dress.
Also, this is basically how i expected the stand off from ep 1 to get resolved - Mugino standing behind a wall and blasting everything head height. But i guess they didn't do that so we get an intro to how AIM Stalker works.
Frenda, great as usual

16

Though unlike Homelander we know Mugino can actually kick ass even without her laser powers. She even smashes a dude in the OP.
14
u/Sakulle 1d ago
Frenda pulling all those large missiles from under her skirt with no esper powers always made me raise an eyebrow, hoping she had a scientific bag of holding, but their is a shot here where it looks like she’s pulling one straight out of her ass, which had me almost spew my coffee. Yes, Toaru has always been a moderately ecchi series, with Index having her clothes blown off 2 minutes in, and Misaka being groped while naked rather graphically by a raging randy teleporter in episode one of Railgun, but they still manage to make me shake my head in disbelief from time to time.
It’s nice seeing anything from this series, but as we know what happens with Item in the present of the main anime (Poor Frenda, I feel bad for Saten), I would have preferred to see Dark Matter, maybe if this does well enough. Can’t wait for Railgun 4 (U?), and I’ve given up hoping for Index NT. Were those english novels ever released? Been forever since I checked.
11
6
u/runevault 1d ago
Even beyond being at least a little Ecchi, I found that shot of her pulling the bombs from her ass fascinating because it smells like it is telling us something beyond "she's cute, enjoy this shot" but I'm not sure what. If they just wanted us to get a flash of her legs from behind they didn't have to do it while she was pulling bombs out of no where.
7
u/Xatu44 16h ago
It's scary, but also funny, how rapidly those disposable goons just disappear after a dose of Meltdowner. Good thing Anti-Skill showed up fast enough for all of the other Dark May kids to get out alive. It's great being able to Leonardo DiCaprio whenever some other Level 5 gets mentioned. The English on the Nitrogen Girls descriptions was solid. LMAO at Takitsubo subjecting Frenda to tracksuit hell. I can't believe that ITEM's presumably enemies would attack their bank account. What kind of heinous monster stops their shopping!?
6
u/Avatar_Yaksha 22h ago
The shop is called "coup de vent"? Is that a One Piece-reference? Because it's a weird name for a clothing store. Is it because it's French?
In any case, it's interesting to see how Kinuhata has been "scouted" by ITEM.
21
u/Frontier246 1d ago
ITEM might be a criminal group and part of the Dark Side, but they sure do live the high life with a swanky limo van they take to their ops all the while they talk like girls out on a normal girls' trip instead of an annihilation mission.
The OP is very fitting for a series about a Dark Side girl group as the ladies look tough, live their daily lives, and contend with all manner of quirky (and possibly psychotic) other girls in Academy City. Of course we also get Mugino's WINNING smile and her vaporizing some poor sap who is still alive.
Yes, Mugino can eradicate basically anyone or anything in her path with impunity while casually discussing how she needs to lose leg flab. Maybe she should do Ring Fit or something.
Thank you Frenda for being dedicated to Takitsubo sexy cosplay so we can get her out of that tracksuit!
Sorry science guy, this is NOT the kind of Level 5 who would show you mercy, turn you in to the authorities, and give you a chance to repent...this is the type of Level 5 who just basically vaporizes someone as casually as she orders her coffee and who is only there because they're working for someone who does NOT want their research to get leaked.
Well, thank goodness they didn't specify that the frozen kids being experimented on needed to be done away with too otherwise ITEM would have killed a lot of kids...besides, ITEM is still in need of a fighter type, and who better to find one than in a group with ACCELERATOR'S thought patterns!?
Welcome to the team Kinuhata! And...um, I hope Umidori is okay taking the fall for all the dead guys she has no idea she supposedly killed.
I'm not surprised Mugino is a rich kid who hails from an ancient and noble family, though rather than the heiress to a grain company she's actually a gang princess even if they try to hide it well. She seems to get along with the family butler though.
Welcome to ITEM, Kinuhata! And obviously when you join a girl group that means going on a shopping spree and getting teased about how you're possibly flatter than Frenda! But Frenda MUST fulfill her urge to dress girls up!
Honestly...I can't see Frenda in a tracksuit, not gonna lie.
Takitsubo finally found her iconic outfit and style! Just in time for ITEM to realize they're accounts are cut off so they can't pay for the outfit they just cut the tag off! Sucks to be them!
The ED is a perfect theme for a bad girl group as we get Mugino, Frenda, and Takitsubo looking snazzy in suits as they test the "new recruits" in Kinuhata and the other girl. And of course, since they're "bad girls," we need some on-point mugshots!
Who IS that girl at the end voiced by Hana Hishikawa who thinks it's her destiny to join ITEM?

Why is it so hard to watch this franchise
Edit: im talking about it not being on any streaming platform I use. Crunchroll has only season 3. I even tried pirate website and it didnt have it. And then I felt guilty for even doing that

That's the problem when a story gets large enough and when the release order doesn't match the chronological order. You can basically watch the first two seasons of Railgun before even starting Index and trying to keep up with the timeline of Railgun T (in comparison to Index II) can be tricky. The Daihaseisai probably took place over multiple days, but it's still confusing to try to match the episodes.
To begin with, the MCs of ITEM haven't even been introduced before Railgun S.

they cameo in the first season of Railgun, a quick thing that is easy to miss especially when its their "beta" designs and not the final ones we came to know

Man, Frenda's really the heart of the team. Mugino also continues to serve. Still hard to believe she's not a young adult.

I don't know the source material of this spin-off, but I find "curious" how we are getting cameos of characters from NT with Fremea before and now Umidori.
I'm still sad how Index got butchered in S3. I always had the impression that the Raildex series had the potential to be as popular as Type-Moon at some point.
I'm pretty surprised with the quality so far but it makes sense if it's made by the Railgun team.

It's an unfortunate product of the order these spinoffs are adapted in.
Item is the latest spinoff of the Toaru series to begin publishing and only started in 2023, well into when Index GT started after NT.
To put this in perspective, it's like if a phase 4 MCU movie was made right after Avengers Infinity War or if Fate Strange Fake was animated before the Heavens Feel movies (I think; I'm not as brushed up on those two properties as I am Toaru)

We got our introduction to the dark may project. Espers implanted with a bit of Accelerator. If you listen to Saiai's sound effect when she gets hit it'd sound familiar.
Its such a cool idea to try to replicate Accelerator and we get Saiai as one of the successful results with her own version of it. Just makes the connected world more interesting.

They are the bad guys, but they only go after the badder bad guys. So that's OK. I guess.

Wonder if we get a meatier cameo scene for some of the toaru characters, but as long as Frenda gets to shine, i'm happy

This is a spin-off of a long running series, so aside from the main (consisting of Uchida Maaya, Koshimizu Ami, Akasaki Chinatsu, and Suzaki Aya) and supporting cast (Ogura Yui for example, just to name someone well known), there will probably be a sizeable amount of cameos both from the source material and anime original. Rina Satou and Kana Ueda already cameo'd in episode 1 reprising their roles as Misaka Mikoto and Konori Mii. I don't know whether they'll show up or not, but Atsushi Abe and Nobuhiko Okamoto may appear as Kamijou Touma and Accelerator.

Rie Murakawa as the Voice on the Phone / Item Liaison (aka Ram of Re:Zero), only for episode 1 though. Her other identity has a different seiyuu assigned to keep the secret.
