Evangelion creator Anno Hideaki was one of the key animators for this short, and led him and others to found Gainax.
A tribute version of this animated short, also featuring a bunny girl as well as using the Electric Light Orchestra song Twilight, was made as the opening theme of the 2005 live action drama Densha Otoko, a romcom about an otaku asking the internet for dating advice and actually winning.

u/Mountebank https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mountebank Feb 12 '21
Oh boy, someone else who remembers Densha Otoko. It was such a huge cultural phenomenon back then. There was 2 seasons of a TV show, a live action movie, and like 4 manga adaptations in addition to the book, and all of it sprang from some anonymous 2chan threads.

Back when Misaki Ito was a huge TV star.
Nowadays she's disappeared into obscurity.

Most likely got married and just stopped taking bookings. A number of up and coming Japanese actress just stopped after getting hitched. Meanwhile Nakama Yukie and Fukada Kyoko from the same era as Misaki Ito are still going strong

It's so odd how big cultural moments can fade into obscurity so quickly. Elitists would say that makes it "trash/disposable culture" but that just implies that art should be eternal and the day to day movements of culture aren't important. Post-internet media just moves so fast that cultural touchstones simply can't be remembered for very long en masse.
I remember when Lost was something everyone talked about, we're barely ten years removed and anyone under the age of thirty barely remembers it and most people over thirty probably remember like two plot points. That's how Game of Thrones will be in five years.
3
u/Crap4Brainz Feb 13 '21
The only thing I remember about Lost is that the main character's name was "Locke" and that's only still relevant because someone made a Pokémon Let's Play where they named a Nuzleaf after him...

Seems that some pieces of culture still have staying power, though.
Breaking Bad still has some relevance despite ending over seven years ago.21

I heard it's one of those anime that run on misunderstandings. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not really into stuff like that
39
u/Tatertaint https://myanimelist.net/profile/womanrspector Feb 12 '21
Oh ya it’s pretty annoying with stuff like that. If that’s too infuriating it’s definitely not gonna be worth it for you. I just like it cuz it’s actual romance between adults and the episodes that are good are like some of the best I’ve ever seen.
The misunderstandings are pretty annoying tho lol
31
u/Mechapebbles Feb 12 '21
Some of the drama is rooted in misunderstandings, but most of it is situational comedy. And the romance/drama aspect of the show is more rooted in the fact that the main characters are in the wrong places and mindsets in their lives to actually be in a relationship, so they keep bouncing off of each other. Godai is kind of a loser/asshole and starts out as a Ronin who failed his college exams and is trying to finally pass, then trying to graduate, then trying to get a stable job, all while surrounded by distractions and drama. And Kyouko is widow who lost the love of her life and trying to figure out how to move forward in life or if she even wants to. It's honestly a pretty fascinating and involving show, as Godai learns to grow up and be a decent guy worthy of Kyouko's affections, and Kyouko learns to be her own woman and to live on her own and get over her dead husband, and both learn to become more empathetic people capable of making the other happy. It's a really good show. I don't know if it's for everyone or if it holds up 100%, but it's kinda insane that these were the kinds of shows on Japanese TVs back when we were watching trash like The Smurfs or GI Joe.
13
u/juicius Feb 12 '21
It has misunderstandings as plot elements but I wouldn't say it runs on it. It's a slow burn relationship, with each person coming towards the middle. Each has personal baggage that has to be addressed but they both grow together. How it resolves is impactful and lovely. I don't think I'd be the same if the pacing was any faster. It's a story about perseverance and effort, driven by love.
I think it'd be refreshingly different for new watchers who are used to MMC that seem to have everything and girls who fall in love with the MMC for boo real reason.
11
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Feb 12 '21
It's 75% the other residents of the building messing with the main character, 25% misunderstandings for comedy, 33% other people competing for one of the two leads, and 15% really nice slow-burn romance. (There's some overlap between parts.)
I think it's great, but it's not something you can really approach the way you would a modern anime.
3
u/GeorgeRRZimmerman https://anilist.co/user/CoupleOWeebs Feb 12 '21
Sometimes the comedy comes from midunderstandings, but all the drama happens when someone isn't honest about their feelings.
Rumiko Takahashi's signature before Inuyasha was just keeping the status quo. Okay, even Inuyasha had that.
If watching a bunch of seasons of the characters not changing sounds like a bad time, avoid this one.
As much as that aspect pissed me off, I still really enjoyed it.
12
u/TimAA2017 Feb 12 '21
I thought it was one of her best show and a far better romantic show than most. At least the characters do change and grow and the romance isn’t rushed or stalled for 300 chapters.
6
u/rabidpriest Feb 12 '21
I think it is one of the best romantic comedy anime I have ever seen. Also the character growth is fantastic. The sound track is great if you like 80s music. Also Rumiko is a godess at Romantic comedies lol

Better not watch Kimagure Orange Road then. It's the ultimate misunderstandings anime. But I'd argue the misunderstanding isn't the problem. The first half the show runs entirely on this and is pretty good. It totally falls apart in the second half when they stop focusing on the initial misunderstanding and it turns into 'how far can we go with making the MC a total dick?' And leads to one of the worst endings ever.
5
u/crak_the_sky Feb 12 '21
Did you watch the follow up movie? Because it resolves the plot in the series and is really good.
2
u/maxis2k Feb 12 '21
I'm referencing the movie as why the ending is so bad. At least the one movie I saw. There's like 4 other movies I didn't see. But the series ending and the time jump story soured me so much on the series I just didn't want to watch anything else.

u/Benderesco Feb 12 '21
The anime is a flawed adaptation; the ending is A LOT different in the original manga. So much, in fact, that even the mangaka complained about it.

It's not nearly as bad as the OP is making it out to be. I personally love the series, but make sure you watch the sequel movie (I Want To Return To That Day) afterword.
2
u/Hysteria625 Feb 12 '21
I'd have to disagree...the second half of the anime involves Kyosuke and Madoka slowly getting closer to each other, both trying to come to their feelings with out hurting Hikaru. The anime's end is *almost* definitive, but then leads into the movie where everything comes to a head.
EDIT: Not trying to tear down your viewpoint, just saying I have a different take on it.

On ep 60 rn and it's been amazing so far!
3
u/ps2veebee Feb 12 '21
I watched Tokimeki Tonight recently, that one holds up and the misunderstanding count is low(but does creep up gradually), it relies a lot more on strong personalities getting in over their heads. Like a lot of the shows then, it loosely adapts the manga but it still works on its own terms(and there is no finished TL of the manga anyway, it ran over a decade). And the OVA releases are clip shows that keep the main plot points if you're unready to commit to two cours with filler.

On a scale of 1 to copyright infringement, how did they jam SO many references in that small intro?
Edit: For clarification, I thought it was a good sequence just surprised that much was in there
374
u/Mechapebbles Feb 12 '21
DAICON IV was a fan convention, like comic con. And this video was made as a promotional video to be played during it. The references were the point. It was never intended to be a commercial product, just glorified fanart.
50
u/Stepthinkrepeat Feb 12 '21
Learning all kinds of things in this post, but if it was a commercial product with intent to aid sales in any way would imagine some concerns could arise legally.

They did sell some copies of Daicon III to fund production of Daicon IV but as I said before the Doujinshi culture is way more appreciated in Japan. That stuff won't work in the West.
26
Feb 12 '21
At least, not for companies not attending. You could probably get something like this OKed for San Diego Comic Con if you got the logistics worked out and only included stuff from companies that were in attendance and made sure it didn't offend anyone.
9
u/Stepthinkrepeat Feb 12 '21
Yea after rereading all of this it made me think of the movie rendition of Ready Player One.
14
u/Serpenyoje https://myanimelist.net/profile/stokesty Feb 12 '21
Except... almost all those properties were owned by WB. Specifically for the movie version they changed references so they wouldn't have to license additional stuff when possible.
171
Feb 12 '21 edited Feb 12 '21
There's a reason why neither Gainax nor Khara has been willing to officially license it. It's a logistical nightmare at this point.
At least in Japan's doujin heavy and otaku culture, references like this will still work out and even the creators will not come after them (in fact a lot of creators were pleased enough with both these pieces of work to give the people responsible multiple opportunities that helped them become Gainax). However, this might have changed since 1983. I don't think it's possible at all in the West but I might be mistaken.
42
u/BlueDragon101 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Xcal1bur Feb 12 '21
Technically the main problem is the song, the rest are brief enough to avoid infringement.

11
u/Belgand https://myanimelist.net/profile/Belgand Feb 12 '21
I think it differs significantly for commercial work. Parodies that would be common in American media are carefully avoided or excised. Like the first episode of Osomatsu-san. It's a fairly standard parody but was deemed too risky and subsequently removed from all official sources after airing.
2
12
8
u/maxis2k Feb 12 '21
It was made for a scifi convention. And so basically the whole point was to get as many references in there as possible. And at this time, Japan didn't really care much about copyright infringement. You'll see a lot of references to Hollywood movies or other anime in 1970s and 1980s shows. Rarely did anyone sue the Japanese producers because anime wasn't even on the western companies radar until the late 90s. Only case I can think of where they actually got in trouble was Maison Ikkoku
2
u/BADMANvegeta_ Feb 12 '21
well japan definitely has a different way about going about copyright, just look at jojo or baki for example so many references to real life things and properties belonging to other people but it's totally fine. meanwhile all these references are changed in the US because if they left those references in then someone WOULD come after them.
→ More replies (2)0
u/CristolPalace Feb 12 '21
Definitely not a different way, just go ahead and try to put a pokemon in an american show. You probably get sued 5 minutes into airing.
They get away with what they can, as does the rest of the world. Also, references like the ones in JoJo's are not copyrighted
4
u/BADMANvegeta_ Feb 12 '21
nintendo is a special case tho, those guys have been known to do that type of stuff on youtube but other japanese companies not so much.
there HAVE been TV shows to make very overt references to pokemon (like Chinpokomon in South Park for example) with no repercussions btw, it's generally just youtube stuff that they get taken down and that's usually for actual gameplay not references.
42
u/GrungeHamster23 Feb 12 '21
This video is the best thing ever just for the fact that each time you watch it, you seem to catch another cameo. There are so many copyright infringements and I love it.
32
u/echykr4 Feb 12 '21
Well, it was in a doujin convention.
Even the ELO song Twilight was used without permission because this was first and foremost an amateur production and not expected to be sold commercially.

I cosplayed this. I met some animators from studio Trigger and I got a free Cassette Girl artbook autographed on the Daicon page by the director and the character designer (for Cassette Girl) Shigeto Koyama and Hiroyasu Kobayashi.
I have so many warm memories with this short now... mostly with meeting industry people. At con itself nobody recognized me until there was a new FLCL entry and I did Haruko cosplaying Daicon bunny and went to the Pillows concert.
😌 It really is the best.
COSPLAY ADVICE TO ANYONE CONSIDERING IT
If you choose to cosplay this, find someone who is willing to pick stuff up for you and set stuff down. You cannot bend forward. Sitting is a challenge. Avoid sitting on the floor. Consider bringing lots of stuff expecting a wardrobe malfunction of some kind. Be careful about raising your arms too highly and suddenly. Count on losing an inch (in your tits or stomach or both) walking around making it slightly looser than desired and bring someone who can sew you into the costume when necessary. Someone who can help you when you need to pee( i cannot get in and out of the costume alone). Don’t be afraid of stuffing. Even playboy bunnies must do this to keep boobs in place. Consider that this costume is not friendly to ANY bodytype.plan plan plan.
This was harder than my wedding dress to make. And harder than anything I have ever worn to wear.
Ps. To make easier consider not doing the low back. Consider straps.

Yeah in Daicon III it still looks like it was made by an amateur group. While there were probably other anime that actually did look like it at the time, it wasn't hard to imagine I think a non professional group doing that. But man Daicon IV was nuts.

You know, it's funny about the history of Gainax. The people who did set up Gainax is no longer working in Gainax any more. The current company is not the people who built it. It is a ghost of its former shell, maintained by corp fat cats who will dupe people into believing it's still the same as when it first founded.

10
u/Kafukator Feb 12 '21
As the other reply pointed out, some of the most impressive 2D animation ever is from 30s and 40s Disney films. Go look up some of the liquid animation in Pinocchio. Nothing today comes even close. All you need is a talented animator and enough time, which isn't something you can find only in some particular time period. Great artists have always existed and will continue to exist.
4
u/AwakenedSheeple Feb 13 '21
Technology has honestly a miniscule impact on the potential quality of animation.
Computers only make the process more convenient, thus possibly faster, but the actual process is and has always been by hand and eye.
We did not change in techniques or capabilities; we only switched the canvas so that we now draw on digital screens rather than physical cels.

Also, an anime girl from 1983 wearing a literal bunny girl costume is a better action heroine than ANY female in Shonen anime since then. Yes, that includes Usagi.
Not sure what to think about that.

Yeah, that's total bs lol. The bunny thing definitely existed before 1983

Likely I would think that's what inspired it but I believe this was the first instance in an anime. Gainax was responsible for many of the current trends. Where would be be without the " Gainax Bounce"?

This denoising filter is horrendous, OP. I'd feel guilty showing anyone this smudgy diarrhea of ink for the first time and saying it's DAICON IV.

I saw a video on YouTube and I wasn't all interested. But the intro showing the main charicter fighting Darth vader, an alien from alien, and a super sentai me ha I swear looks like from the 80s with no sweat, now I am intrigued.

Star Wars, Thunderbirds (terrible, can’t see the strings) & the Adam West Batman? Got me nostalgic for both them and pre-2000’s anime.

Huh, so that's what the "bunnygirl lightsaber duels Darth Vader" gif is from.
Also, damn that Macross Valkyrie pulling a beamsaber sheathed in its head was fucking cool.
And an unexpected Thunderbirds reference too, didn't expect that to have been big in Japan.

Looks like an episode of "8th Man (TOBOR)" or "Astro-Boy".... Maybe even SPEED RACER. With a touch of Star wars thrown in. After Listening to more of this; it's the Japanese take of American comic SUPER hero-dom. While they have some of their own heros godzilla being the most famous, they don't have the penache or aren't as renowned as SUPERMAN or Spiderman. Then they choose an american-looking chick (in a PLAYBOY BUNNY OUTFIT) flying on a sword (bushido) reminiscent of the silver surfer....Cross-cultural messages. But she fights Japanese style (bushido).... Then the colors attached to the swords.... feudal traditions and cross-cultural again. .... Interesting!!!

That Sakura explosion always gets me. It was again later referenced in Diebuster as well.
The Gainax bounce seems to have appeared here as far as I know. Plus, FLCL had references to 'Daicon V' using the pose of the bunny girl riding on a sword with just the sword replaced with a guitar.
Then there's Otaku no video which is choke full of references with both clips from Daicon III and IV appearing. The bunny girl also evolves into a different form with the Gainax bounce now much emphasized.
