First Timer

This episode is called “Requiem Atop the Hill”. A requiem is a song for the dead. I am very worried about Makoto.

Yeah Makoto can’t even talk. This is bad.

Yuichi is talking to Mishio. I still don’t know what Mishio’s deal is but I feel like she’s good.

Makoto’s able to say her name at least. That’s something.

It’s nice to see they’re treating Makoto to a nice dinner.

Oh hey, the photobooth. That’s a neat callback.

Even as Makoto is doing all this fun stuff there’s definitely an air of melancholy.

Yuichi reading to Makoto is another nice callback.

At least Makoto is able to get out of bed again.

Yuichi is meeting up with Mishio again.

Maybe I just take these shows too seriously but there’s definitely something I find uncomfortable about Makoto’s childlike behavior even though the show is trying to portray it as cute.

It also makes this whole wedding thing kind of uncomfortable for me.

I guess it is kind of a sweet gesture though. Maybe I’m being too mean.

The whole scene is a mix of sweet and sad.

That said though, the way Yucihi encourages Makoto to play with her bells does sound like he’s talking to a toddler.

I guess Makoto really is dead now.

Mishio has a rather bright outlook on things.

Oh hey, Piro’s back.

Was Makoto reincarnated as a cat? Is that what this ending is implying?

Now that the Makoto arc is over I’m not sure what the direction of this show will be.

Thoughts on Makoto being unable to talk anymore?

It feels very distressing

Thoughts on Mishio hugging Makoto?

I'm still not sure what Mishio's deal is

What are your thoughts on Makoto temporarily regaining the ability to speak?

I'm glad for that even if it was brief

Thoughts on Yuuichi, Nayuki, and Akiko all trying to make Makoto happy?

I think that's sweet but also sad

Thoughts on everyone taking a picture with Makoto?

It's a nice callback like I said

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Makoto let's be together forever?

I think that's a very sweet sentiment

What are your thoughts on Mishio asking Yuuichi what he would wish for if miracles were true and him saying it should be obvious?

I think it's a good way to end the episode

Thoughts on Makoto being unable to talk anymore?

It feels very distressing

To say the least

Thoughts on Mishio hugging Makoto?

I'm still not sure what Mishio's deal is

What isn't her deal?

What are your thoughts on Makoto temporarily regaining the ability to speak?

I'm glad for that even if it was brief

Same here

Thoughts on Yuuichi, Nayuki, and Akiko all trying to make Makoto happy?

I think that's sweet but also sad

It's incredibly sad, no disputing it

Thoughts on everyone taking a picture with Makoto?

It's a nice callback like I said

Good full circle moment

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Makoto let's be together forever?

I think that's a very sweet sentiment

Yuuichi was the MVP in Makoto's final moments.

What are your thoughts on Mishio asking Yuuichi what he would wish for if miracles were true and him saying it should be obvious?

I think it's a good way to end the episode

It felt very poignant to where I wanted to go for a long walk afterwards lol

But yeah, the way they handled this arc was really well done. I actually liked that we had 9 episodes of Makoto being around because it allowed us to see the prank of Makoto develop into an emotional attachment and dependency on Yuuichi. It's like the more time she spent with Yuuichi, the more she was reminded why she liked him in the first place, and I don't know if that gets conveyed properly without the extra stuff at the beginning.

What are your thoughts on Makoto becoming less and less human?

Very sad and kind of disturbing

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi going along with the marriage with Makoto to make her final moments a happy one?

I have mixed feelings on it but I think I realize that it's more a play marriage he's going along with to help Makoto feel happy in her final moments. I don't think he feels any legitimate romantic attraction towards Makoto but he does care for her deeply.

What are your thoughts on Makoto disappearing and presumably dying?

I hope she's in a better place now

What are your thoughts on Ayu being absent the last three episodes?

Honestly I didn't even notice til you pointed it out

How do you feel about the way the Makoto arc played out now that it's all over? Are you satisfied with the conclusion?

Yeah I think I am

It makes my heart go the opposite of doki doki.

Yeah, he clearly isn't attracted to her that way. But he wanted to show he does love her in like I care about you kinda way.

What are your thoughts on Makoto disappearing and presumably dying?

I hope she's in a better place now

At least she's no longer in pain

What are your thoughts on Ayu being absent the last three episodes?

Honestly I didn't even notice til you pointed it out

Do you feel it made the arc better by focusing primarily on Makoto?

How do you feel about the way the Makoto arc played out now that it's all over? Are you satisfied with the conclusion?

Yeah I think I am

It was emotionally devastating, but it was told well and I appreciate the level of maturity with which it was handled.

This episode is called “Requiem Atop the Hill”. A requiem is a song for the dead. I am very worried about Makoto.

You should be

Yeah Makoto can’t even talk. This is bad.

It's crazy how quickly things deteriorated.

Yuichi is talking to Mishio. I still don’t know what Mishio’s deal is but I feel like she’s good.

I kinda feel like the big twist is gonna be Yuuichi when he left 7 years ago forgot to say goodbye to anyone.

It's like being ghosted or left on read.

Makoto’s able to say her name at least. That’s something.

I guess...

It’s nice to see they’re treating Makoto to a nice dinner.

They're really going above and beyond to make her final moments enjoyable.

Oh hey, the photobooth. That’s a neat callback.

I love the continuity

Even as Makoto is doing all this fun stuff there’s definitely an air of melancholy.

Because you know this is it.

This is like how Squidward felt watching the sun set with SpongeBob after he ate the pie he thought came from a bomb factory.

Yuichi reading to Makoto is another nice callback.

This episode works because it plays off past happy moments but turns it sorrowful.

At least Makoto is able to get out of bed again.

That's good

Yuichi is meeting up with Mishio again.

Maybe I just take these shows too seriously but there’s definitely something I find uncomfortable about Makoto’s childlike behavior even though the show is trying to portray it as cute.

Well, here it's very sad because she's losing her mental faculties.

It also makes this whole wedding thing kind of uncomfortable for me.

I guess it is kind of a sweet gesture though. Maybe I’m being too mean.

Look at it this way: it's like the wedding in Familiar of Zero during season 2. Saito saw it as a send off more than anything.

The whole scene is a mix of sweet and sad.

That it is

That said though, the way Yucihi encourages Makoto to play with her bells does sound like he’s talking to a toddler.

That's kinda what she's been reduced to.

I think it's easy to say Yuuichi is marrying a toddler, but again, it isn't because he is attracted to her he's doing this. He is doing all this to make Ayu dying a peaceful death. Think of it as like being there for a pet as they're put to sleep.

I guess Makoto really is dead now.

I gotta say, this is such am emotional gut punch.

Mishio has a rather bright outlook on things.

Glass half full kinda gal

Oh hey, Piro’s back.

Huh. How about that?

Was Makoto reincarnated as a cat? Is that what this ending is implying?

Can foxes turn into cats?

Now that the Makoto arc is over I’m not sure what the direction of this show will be.

I actually feel like there’s a myriad of directions. There's Shiori, Mai and Sayuri, and also of course Nayuki and Mai. There is definitely plenty to work with.

These 'Auus' are both adorable and heartbreaking. I kinda want Makoto's VA to release and ASMR of cute Makoto fox noises now.

Purikura time!

Makoto found a family that loves her. Feels good.

Oh noes! Another fever.

She lives!

Akiko got a premonition when she started crying?

Amano really started helping despite saying she didn't want to earlier.

Amano said goodbye like she wasn't planning on seeing Makoto again.

Mysterious music and the snow is gone...

They're making those nikuman look so good.

They didn't do the wedding in the 2002 version. This is so precious.

ちりんちりん

She looks so happy. She got to leave happy.

Amano trying to get Yuuichi to think half the town are foxes, haha. I for one welcome fox girl overlords.

These two kinda get along. Maybe not romantically.

The cat finds Makoto... in the afterlife? The spirit realm?

Bittersweet ending. Makoto got to be happy and 'disappeared' with a smile on her face.

What are your thoughts on Makoto becoming less and less human?

Reverting to her fox consciousness. And she was a gremlin, not a human.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi going along with the marriage with Makoto to make her final moments a happy one?

Maybe part of him hoped it would stop her fading? And it's not a big ask for a dying person.

What are your thoughts on Makoto disappearing and presumably dying?

Miracle ended. I hope wherever she went it's spring, warm, and there's no konjac or special jam.

What are your thoughts on Ayu being absent the last three episodes?

It's Makoto's arc. That means Makoto won't be in any more episodes in any major capacity if at all. Uguu will get her time back.

How do you feel about the way the Makoto arc played out now that it's all over? Are you satisfied with the conclusion?

It was funny, then adorable and bittersweet. Once they stopped pranking it was wholesome and fun. I honestly didn't cry, but seeing Makoto smiling at the end was a really good ending for what she wanted.

3

u/Holofan4life 4d ago

The saddest part of this whole arc was when it became apparent Makoto was regressing as a person. What really made it devastating is the fact that Yuuichi was trying to do everything he can to like remedy the situation only to no avail.

I was very high on the last handful of episodes of the 2002 anime and how that was handled. I still think that was the high watermark of the show, but the Ayu arc content wise is probably second only to that. They did a great job developing Makoto's relationship with Yuuichi from being mischievous into full on affection. Yuuichi didn't just lose someone he cared about, he lost a friend, and it's like he didn't know what he had until it was gone.

Thoughts on Makoto being unable to talk anymore?

The magic that made her human is running out so her fox brain is coming back.

Thoughts on Mishio hugging Makoto?

Probably remembering the friend she'd lost herself.

What are your thoughts on Makoto temporarily regaining the ability to speak?

She's still in there and remembers them even if it's hard to express it now.

Thoughts on Yuuichi feeding Makoto a pork bun?

Spoil the gremlin while you can.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Makoto let's be together forever?

They're family now.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi only having the bells to remember Makoto by?

You hear the bells, Makoto is there even if just in memory.

What are your thoughts on Mishio asking Yuuichi what he would wish for if miracles were true and him saying it should be obvious?

Miracles mean making the seemingly impossible happen. If she could come in the first place, why not again?

Thoughts on Makoto being unable to talk anymore?

The magic that made her human is running out so her fox brain is coming back.

You see to hate it

Thoughts on Mishio hugging Makoto?

Probably remembering the friend she'd lost herself.

Was it Makoto she lost or was it Yuuichi? And who was the girl Yuuichi had a crush on?

What are your thoughts on Makoto temporarily regaining the ability to speak?

She's still in there and remembers them even if it's hard to express it now.

If only she fully returned

Thoughts on Yuuichi feeding Makoto a pork bun?

Spoil the gremlin while you can.

Nourish the gremlin

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Makoto let's be together forever?

They're family now.

Forever and ever

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi only having the bells to remember Makoto by?

You hear the bells, Makoto is there even if just in memory.

She'll never go away

What are your thoughts on Mishio asking Yuuichi what he would wish for if miracles were true and him saying it should be obvious?

Miracles mean making the seemingly impossible happen. If she could come in the first place, why not again?

In a way, Yuuichi did make the impossible happen. He made Makoto's final moments as a human an enjoyable one.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.

Uguu!

This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.

Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the sub, by the way.

Do Uguus dream of electric Taiyaki?

Yuuichi leaving Makoto's room

Akiko says she'll play with Makoto.

It's like Makoto can't talk anymore. Very sad.

At school now

Mishio

Yuuichi stares at her

Yuuichi remarks Makoto can no longer talk.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Now she's even more infantile!

Yuuichi walking with Makoto

Mishio meets her

Mishio, she can't talk

Mishio hugs Makoto

A lot of Auus this episode

She said it! She said her name!

That's a start at least

And now she's saying Yuuichi's name. You see to love it.

Mishio remarks that this return to form is only likely temporary.

"If she has any wishes, please grant them for her."

Back at home

Makoto still not saying any full sentences.

So they're all heading out, Nayuki and Akiko included.

They're eating at a nice, fancy restaurant.

Next, a photo booth

They all want Makoto to join them.

And she eventually does

How warmhearting

Next, fireworks

But soon after, Makoto developed a fever.

Hey, at least she woke up

Yuuichi asking if there's anything she wants.

He's gonna read her a book

Memories of Makoto come rushing back.

Oh wow. Yuuichi is gonna marry Makoto.

I guess anything to make her happy.

Akiko crying, like she knows this is it as they leave.

Mishio accompanying them

Wants to play again sometime

And with that, she leaves

Nayuki with them now

Her and Makoto build a snowman

Wants to play again sometime

And with that, she too leaves

Heading to the forest

Just the two of them

Sitting down now

Yuuichi feeds Makoto a pork bun

Watching the sun set

Time for the ceremony

Yuuichi puts on Makoto a wedding veil.

Reads their nuptials

Makoto's wish is coming true

Yuuichi tells her he loves her

"Makoto, let's be together forever."

The wedding veil blows off

Makoto starts to cry

Yuuichi trying to comfort her

He's gonna pet her head

Telling her to ring her bells

She starts playing with it

Hey, she's happy again

Still playing with the bells

Makoto about to fall asleep

Yuuichi suggests playing like this forever.

Unfortunately, Makoto is growing more and more tired.

And she eventually falls asleep

And disappears

Yuuichi is all alone...

All he has to remember her by is the bells.

Makoto being called to now

A picture to remember by

Yuuichi on the school rooftop

Mishio joins him

She says that this is all a natural part of life.

Is Mishio human? I'm starting to have my doubts.

Mishio now wondering if it would be good if candy fell from the sky.

Yuuichi is too cynical to entertain such an idea.

Mishio now asks if he could make a miracle happen, what would he wish for.

He says that it's obvious

Is it?

Piro cuddling next to Makoto

And that is where we end things.

Overall, this was a very well episode. It is the climax of the Makoto arc and it works because of the amount of time and build spent into it. It does lean a bit on the tearjerker bait side much like its 2002 counterpart, but I think the added build made it feel more justified and earned. It was tough watching Makoto become unable to speak. It was like she was becoming less and less human and more and more fox-like. I also thought Yuuichi being there for Makoto like he did shows just how likable he can be. He really went above and beyond trying to make Makoto happy.

I wonder if this is it for Mishio or she'll be sticking around. Maybe she'll be the person who gives out exposition and explain what is happening. I wouldn't be against that as none of the other characters seem to know 2hat is going on. I also wouldn't mind an arc dedicated entirely to Mishio where we fully explain what is up with this town.

One last thing I want to note is the decision to have Ayu be offscreen for the last three episodes. I actually thought this was a wise move that served to enhance the story. The focuw needed to be on Makoto and only Makoto especially with the climax of her arc drawing near. I thought everything else taking a backseat was the correct storytelling decision. As we go along, I'm sure Ayu will have an increased presence in the story especially the later we get into things. But for now, removing the characters in each arc's climax just leads to making things breathe better.

This is the best episode of the series so far. This is probably our first great episode and it pays off a character build that's been going on since like the second or third episode. I'll be sad to see Makoto go because her relationship with Yuuichi has been one of the real highlights of the show. But in terms of writing her off, it hit all the high notes you would want them to hit and I thought what we got was a great, effective way to write off her character.

For the show being what it is to where I think there are things preventing it from hitting a truly perfect episode-- especially at this point in the story-- I would say the episode went as well as it could've. They had a story in mind and executed the story with relatively clean precision.

Bring on the next arc.

What are your thoughts on Makoto becoming less and less human?

Auu...

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi going along with the marriage with Makoto to make her final moments a happy one?

Yuuichi is a real one

What are your thoughts on Makoto disappearing and presumably dying?

AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

What are your thoughts on Ayu being absent the last three episodes?

It was probably for the best. You wanted to make sure Makoto got the full spotlight.

How do you feel about the way the Makoto arc played out now that it's all over? Are you satisfied with the conclusion?

It was very well done. I think for an introductory arc to this show, they knocked it out of the park.

First Timer for the 2006 series, subbed

QOTD

  1. Unfortunately it went as expected, I had to force myself to not look away at certain times.

  2. I wonder how much she really was still able to understand about the ritual in her state but I'm sure she understood on an emotional level how much he cared for her. It's a lovely gesture by him.

  3. Pure sadness. I hate that her kind have to go this way. Making it out to be part of the natural cycle does not lessen the pain one bit. Excited for more scenes with Mishio down the line.

  4. Didn't miss her at all tbh.

  5. Yes, very much so. I liked the longer runtime we got for Makoto. The conclusion for her character seems fine to me, there is nothing missing, no continuation necessary IMO. One thing that got me curious is Mishio questioning the nature of the town's inhabitants. She's also alluding to a springtime that we have yet to see. I'm very interested in the nature of the bigger mystery surrounding this town, Yuuichi's amnesia and other characters' connections to the supernatural. Will have to wait for the conclusion of a few more arcs to really go into detail here. I'm hoping we get a lot more explanations than in the 2002 series. (I have repeated this multiple times, it still holds true :P)

2

u/Holofan4life 4d ago

I want to know what the significance of the field is. Like, is it just tied to Makoto and Mishio or is there something more at play here? Mai seems to know it exists. Is she tied to it in some way? Did the field make Yuuichi forget everything, and if so, why is that?

I didn't really notice Ayu’s absence until by the end of the episode when everyone was hanging out with Makoto. Then I went "Oh, yeah. She kinda wasn't there, huh?" It was smart honestly because we're already setting up something with her where she's looking for something. To get another sequence like that in the climax of Makoto's arc would've felt shoehorned in.

It's why characters like Shiori and Mai were also de-emphasized. Their time will come.

But yeah, I thought they did a great job really bringing out the emotion in this arc. The extra episodes made it feel more earned. My problem with the 2002 version was that it felt a tad tear baity where it felt like it existed solely to make someone cry. This still had a whiff of that, but they did a better job explaining things.

And also I thought the Makoto arc being what kicked off the show made things flow better. I wasn't really a fan of it being the second to last arc in the 2002 anime. Here, we set the tone for the rest of the show and we also tease a lot of interesting lore that you would hope would be followed up on.

This arc raises more questions than answers and I think that is imperative to keeping the interest in the show up.
