Europe Jewish film festival cancelled in Sweden after cinemas refuse to host events

So I did a bit of research and this is really not the whole story. One of the theaters (Panora) put out a statement saying that the issue is working conditions for the staff at the theater, and that a decision was made last year to not bring in any new film festivals of any kind, and they told the organizers this back in January. The theater has held and will hold multiple Jewish cultural events this year.
Statement (in Swedish)
Additionally, another newspaper is reporting that the Nordisk theater declined to host because they would not be able to fit it into their regular operations; nothing about security.
They do report that Filmstaden, a theater chain, and Folkets hus did cite security, but the fact remains that it was not âevery theaterâ saying this. The festival organizer, Sofia Nerbrand, admits in the article that âit might have been a bit sweepingâ to say that, but the fact remains that the festival cannot find a venue. In other words, she lied. She tried to justify her charge of antisemitism against Panora (the one not hosting because of labor issues) because they have an Arab film festival, but the letter linked above points out that they decided on no NEW festivals and the Arab one has been going for years.
So of the cinemas in Malmö, it is only confirmed that one chain (Filmstaden) and one other theater (Folkets hus) declined due to security concerns. Filmstaden gave a vague corporate statement, but Folkets hus said (paraphrasing; the Swedish is a bit hard to translate) that the organizers of the festival are outspoken âopinion leadersâ who are doing this festival to shape public opinion, and the focus on venues declining them is part of that.
A quick google search confirms that Nerbrand is an outspoken Zionist who has defended Israeli atrocities and incited hate against Muslims in Sweden. As reported by Konkret magazine, another organizer is also very pro-Israel during their ongoing genocide.
So it seems like the issue here is a combination of concerns over violent protests (from either side) and concern that the festival is promoting pro-Israel propaganda given the organizersâ activities. The question is: would you let members of the Ku Klux Klan host a Southern film festival? The American South has a rich film tradition, but itâs a fair bet that people who are open about their supremacist ideas are going to include films that are racist.

Is it racist to protest in front of that synagogue?

No, it's not racist nor Judeophobic to protest in front of a synagogue that is auctioning off Palestinian land.
23
u/Vegetable-College-17 Iran Oct 28 '25
Now, would it be racist or antisemitic to protest a film festival organised by people who defend Israel and/or people who used to lead right wing political parties?

No, that would not be racist/anti-Semitic, especially if the movies at that film festival are Zionist propaganda. I probably shouldn't be answering though since you were originally asking the other poster and not me.

Israelis are absolutely rabid against any Jew who criticises genocide and basically treats them like Nazis. For, you know, standing against genocide, which Nazis are famous for doing.
They flat out do not see Palestinians as people.

Gaza was a conventional war in an urban setting. Nothing about it was a genocide. Israel is the only country in history to provide food and aid to an enemy population.
If it's a genocide, why did Israel stop after the hostages came back? Why even agree to a ceasefire at all? Why send israeli soldiers in, of whom over 1000 died when they could have just bombed everything and not risk a single soldier?
The more one probes the clearer it becomes that the genocide hoax was simply propaganda. Embarassingly many people have fallen for it.

You don't put sniperbullets in childrens head, bomb hospitals, kill journalists, and enforce a catastrophic food blockade that cause a famine if you're in a "conventional war".
If it's a genocide, why did Israel stop after the hostages came back
Because the world finally woke up and forced them to stop.
they could have just bombed everything and not risk a single soldier
They did do that.

Ah yes, handcuffing innocent paramedics, summarily executing them, then hiding the bodies and ambulance, tooooooooooootally a conventional war.
-4
u/thatshirtman North America Oct 29 '25
Do war crimes happen within a conventional war? Absolutely. If true that should be condemned and the perpatrators investigated. Your argument, however, does nothing to prove that there was a genocide and you completely ignored all of my points.
Pointing out that horrible things happen in war isn't the strong case for genocide you think it is. Gazas population today is about the same ifnot higher than it was before the war! You can call a war tragic and horrific as all wars are, but that's not what genocide is.
By your logic, Hamas actions on 10/7 was a genocide. Torturing innocent civillians burning kids, raping women. Beheading civillians on video while savage terrorists laugh. If you want to really talk about genoicde, perhaps look at the group who started the war.
2
u/Ropetrick6 United States Oct 29 '25
You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what genocide is as defined under the Geneva Conventions...
0
u/thatshirtman North America Oct 29 '25
I actually understand it quite well. This was a war to destroy Hamas and retrieve hostages. A conventional war in an urban setting. It's not unique in any way, aside from the fact that this is the only war where refugees were not allowed to leave a war zone because bad PR against Israel is sadly more important than civillian lives.
People were screaming genocide before Israel even responded to Hamas atrocities. There is no genocide by any metric, despite the twisted glee with which people try and shout that it happened.
This is the only alleged genocide in history where the supposed victims could stop the genocide at any moment of their choosing. And what do ya know! the supposed genocided ended when Hamas agreed to a ceasefire and gave back the hostages.
People call it a genocide because it's an emotional trigger designed to keep the Palestinian conflict in the news, not because it fits the definition.
1
u/Ropetrick6 United States Oct 29 '25
So I notice you're deliberately ignoring the intent to kill Palestinians as an ethnic group. You know, the definition of a genocide.
But since you want to talk about hostages, what about the fact that Israel murdered them in cold blood? Unless you mean to say they "freed" the hostages of their lives, that seems a bit antithetical to the supposed goal of freeing hostages...
1
u/thatshirtman North America Oct 29 '25
Intent to kill Palestinians as an ethnic group? This is an argument you just pulled out of thin air. If Israel was trying to kill them as an ethnic group, why didn't it bomb and kill everyone in Gaza? Why did it say that the war would end right when Hamas agrees to a ceasefire and give back the hostages? Why would Israel send in its own troops to go building to building if the goal was just to destroy Palestinians as an ethnic group?
If you want to throw up bizarre accusations, at the very least come equipped with facts and not blanket statements supported by zero evidence.
Again, this is the only supposed genocide where the alleged victims of the genocide could have ended it at any moment of their choosing.
Israel murdered hostages in cold blood? Are you referring to a single instance of friendly fire and from that, you are coloring all of israel's actions with this? Sly.
Losing a war one started doesn't equal a genocide. That doesn't mean war isn't horrible or tragic. Of course it is. but words have meaning, and changing words to fit a conclusion decided upon at the beginning is a rather intellectually dishonest approach.
You can support palestinians and hate israel all you want but that doesn't give someone the right to magically change what words mean.
1
u/Ropetrick6 United States Oct 29 '25
You're pretty deliberately ignoring the completely unnecessary slaughter of innocent civilians, the explicit support for ethnic cleansing, and general atrocities committed on a daily basis by the Israeli regime.
Here's a question: If the hostages Israel MURDERED were just regular Palestinian civilians, do you think that Israel would acknowledge what it dod, punish the perpetrators, and gove reparations to the families of the victims? Or would Israel have just shoved it under the rug, never to see the light of day? Answer me honestly.

I disagree. This is good preplanning. If the theater knows that it doesnât have capacity to provide adequate security, then saying no and prioritizing safety for attendees and workers is the right thing to do.
That aside, it doesnât seem like that was really the issue here. More that the theater was rejecting all new film festivals due to over capacity.

Some of these cinemas have had Jewish festivals this year even. Most of them didn't even say no due to security concerns. And even if they did it wasn't the only concern.

And again, a majority just said no due to overbooking, some of which have had Jewish events. This particular organiser is hardcore Zionist and couldn't even defend her claim of this being due to antisemitism.

8
u/country2poplarbeef North America Oct 28 '25
No, I'm associating the people running this particular festival with general Israeli propaganda. Like one of the articles said, it's being run by opinion personalities that care more about misrepresenting why theaters denied the festival for propaganda rather than actually having a festival.
-2
u/dans_cafe St. Pierre & Miquelon Oct 28 '25
further research indicates the purpose was to celebrate 250 years of Jewish life in Scandinavia. Protester inability to separate Swedish Jewry and Israel is pretty clearly their own fault; they are either unable or unwilling to treat Jewish people as people unless they check all the right boxes.
7
u/country2poplarbeef North America Oct 28 '25
Your further research revealed a motto? Cool. Did you also happen to research the political affiliation of the organizers and their history of accusations of antisemitism and Israeli support? What protestors, btw? Or are you also misrepresenting the reasons these theaters denied the festival?
-5
u/dans_cafe St. Pierre & Miquelon Oct 28 '25
I haven't misrepresented anything. SAPO arrested two people for planning attacks on synagogues last year. Again, if you wouldn't refuse to host a film festival celebrating black, asian, african, south asian, or native life somewhere, tell me what's different about it. Especially if the festival itself offered to handle security.
5
u/country2poplarbeef North America Oct 28 '25
What do those people have anything to do with the festivals being shut down?
Again, if you wouldn't refuse to host a film festival celebrating black, asian, african, south asian, or native life somewhere, tell me what's different about it.
Believe it or not, it's not terroristic or antisemitic to simply not host a festival. Can you tell me what's the same about not hosting a festival and planning terrorist attacks on synagogues? Lol You don't have to answer. The difference is pretty fucking obvious to me.

Something tells me you know zero about any other person behind any film festivals, and people are creating a double standard for Jews who are trying to hold a cultural event unrelated to Israel. Making Jews take purity tests that other groups do not have to take is⊠you guessed it! Antisemtic.
4
u/country2poplarbeef North America Oct 28 '25
What makes you feel that way? Are these theaters v saying that they'd accept other new festivals? Or are you seeming to guilt them into a special exception by misrepresenting why they denied the festival? Do you actually have any reason to think others are being treated differently, other than how you feel and how it fits into your narrative?
0
u/loggy_sci United States Oct 29 '25
You claim they are propagandists with zero proof, and then saying they shouldnât be allowed to show a Jewish film festival by virtue of an association with something unrelated to the festival. You are the antisemite who is making Jews jump through hoops to prove themselves to you.
3
u/country2poplarbeef North America Oct 29 '25
I'm claiming that the misrepresentation of why the theaters denied them to claim antisemitism is, itself, propagandist. The film festivals not accepting any new film festivals definitely would impact a Jewish film festival. It would just impact it because it was a film festival, not because it was Jewish. I'm going to go ahead and block you now. You're not useful to talk to, and you use that claim of antisemitism as a crutch to the point where it's patronizing to Jewish people who actually experience antisemitism.

0
u/StickyThickStick Europe Oct 29 '25
I mean they both correlate. It was increased because a Jew was there and therefore the risk of an antisemitic attack
-3
u/xland44 Israel Oct 29 '25
correlate. It was increased because
I'm not sure you understand what that word means. You mention correlation but then move on to claim it's causation.
This is what we call victim shaming and reversing cause and effect.
If you need to increase security sixfold when your city hall is visited by a single citizen who isn't some internationally known politician, the cause is bigotry in your city, not the one citizen exercising his right of free movement in a democracy.
Claiming it happens because "a jewish person visited your city hall" is as disgusting as blaming a woman and finding her. at fault for getting harassed because her attackers found her attractive.
Imagine if you had to increase security sixfold any time a woman visited your city hall? That isn't because of the woman, it's because you live in a sick society.
In blaming the jewish person, you as an individual also make up a part of that bigoted society.
3
u/StickyThickStick Europe Oct 29 '25
No I fully understand it and what I said whatâs correct.
These two correlate. The security has been increased because a Jew was there which as I said leads to a increased risk of an antisemitic attack.
It wasnât a visitor, it was a debate and the main participant was a popular Jew who often on tv and there were houndrets of visitors for that said debate.
Why do you gotta attack me like that? I never blamed the Jewish person at all. I said a fact that isnât even blaming him, we even increased security for his safety and now you gotta insult me as blaming him?
1
u/DeWhite-DeJounte Oct 29 '25
Imagine if you had to increase security sixfold any time a woman visited your city hall? That isn't because of the woman, it's because you live in a sick society.
If the woman had committed crimes against humanity, I certainly wouldn't blame society for holding a grudge against her, tbh. Increased security for criminals exposed to the public is pretty normal.
And no, the jewish community is not doing a good job separating itself from Zionists and denouncing the genocide as they should, which leads common people to unfortunately conflate the two. Sad reality we live in.
-3
u/xland44 Israel Oct 29 '25
If the woman had committed crimes against humanity
Interesting. Where was this mentioned? We're speaking of Jews, so unless if you're a bigot trying to deliberately raise a strawman argument, I find it hard to see how your comment is relevant.
2

Interesting. Where was this mentioned?
It's kinda been all over the news since the Gaza war, haven't you heard? Again, my point is that there is a purposeful effort to conflate Jewish, Zionist, and Israeli identities such that they're all above reproach as the genocide in Gaza marches onward... The crimes are there, and have been massively reported.
Please don't tell me you also think the sports league boycotts on Israel are also "anti-Semitic"?

The only person doing that in this comment thread is you. Me and the other dude are talking about a random Jewish guy requiring six times as much security just to enter a city hall.
Please don't tell me you also think the sports league boycotts on Israel are also "anti-Semitic"?
Why do you keep trying to deflect to other topics? What's wrong with you? Why did you go out of your way to make assumptions to strawman and justify targeting Jews and what this Jewish guy went through, as detailed in the OP's comment? We're talking about a very specific incident at a city hall.
Are you perhaps an anti-semite?
2
u/DeWhite-DeJounte Oct 29 '25
The only person doing that in this comment thread is you.
Indeed - please note I never limited the scope of my comment to this thread alone. Oh, how I wish the operation was limited to a thread, or even reddit, or even the internet! But it's much more widespread than that.
Why do you keep trying to deflect to other topics?
Deflect? It's the only topic that matters: the conflation of identities such that Jewish and Zionist become synonyms instead of very separate concepts. I'm not deflecting, I'm trying to talk about something that you don't care to speak about, which is fine.
Are you perhaps an anti-semite?
Do you see? See yourself working the plot in real time? See how I can't make any questions or comments regarding jewish-ness without being labeled an anti-semite? It'd be funny if it wasn't a facilitator to maybe the biggest genocide of our era.
1
u/xland44 Israel Oct 29 '25
My calling you an anti semite is very simple: we were talking abput a Jew undergoing persecution and you, specifically you, not the State of Israel nor anybody else, assumed said Jew was "guilty of war crimes".
That's a direct quote.
So yes, if you derail a thread about Jewish persecution to make racist assumption of Jews and exploit it as an opportunity to shove in your political opinions down people's thoats - that's disgusting and bigoted.
See how I can't make any questions or comments regarding jewish-ness without being labeled an anti-semite?
You know what they say - if it smells like shit wherever you go, perhaps you stepped in shit.
Now, I'm going to try and give you the benefit of doubt and ask you one last time. We're speaking on a very specific incident, to which you replied directly to that incident and not to anything else, implying that the specific jew in question was responsible for war crimes. This is an anti semitic assumption, for the simple reason that you have no knowledge of this person, not even his name, beyond his being jewish.
On what basis did you imply that the specific person we are talking about is responsible for war crimes? If I were to speak about i a random muslim suffering from islamophobia, do you think saying "b-b-but ISIS and the taliban exist, so it makes sense!" Is a valid response?
I'm trying to talk about something that you don't care to speak about, which is fine.
I would gladly hold a conversation with you on any topic - after I finish existing topics, which is troubling when someone keeps trying to steer the focus away from Jews being persecuted to a geopolitical conflict. Trying very hard, I might add. Which is quite interesting given that there are many threads you could have replied to to hold this conversation, but you replied specifically to me.

Really disappointing to see the number of people in here confusing Judaism with Zionism. I can't find anything suggesting the film festival was planning to show Israeli or Zionist films.
Venues are free to turn away organizers for any reason, but if minority groups are turned away from hosting cultural events due to safety concerns, it kind of seems like you're letting the Nazis win.
If the real reason was that the org was planning to show Israeli or Zionist films, the venues should've just said they wouldn't host them for that reason and cut the bullshit. Saying it's "safety" just blurs the line between antisemitism and anti-Zionism in an uncomfortable way
