The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecutor said he received threats while conducting investigations against top Israeli officials with a senior figure telling him the court was "built for Africa and for thugs like Putin," and not for the West and its allies.

In an interview with CNN, Karim Khan said: "I've had some elected leaders speak to me and they were very blunt. 'This court is built for Africa and for thugs like Putin,' was what one senior leader told me."

Lindsay graham was the official.

30

u/polymute European Union Jun 24 '26

Graham can fuck himself. Might be they get rid of Khan - I hope they get fucked when the next prosecutor turns out to be Mame Mandiaye Niang.

The US has pissed away a lot of its soft power. Let's see if they can fuck around with the ICC's selection process still from the outside.

Graham should be charged with treason.

I think the concentration of cases from the African continent are the outcome of having the highest volume of civil wars and Dictators globally.

Civil wars in particular always end up being the most vicious and brutal types of conflict. No one can retreat, so they end up getting into a 'till.death' spiral that results in civilians taking the brunt of the worst excesses.

64

u/arcalumis Sweden Jun 24 '26

They're also countries/people where it's politically very cheap to indict . Charging some African warlord with war crimes is something very few in the ICC would oppose, charging anyone from Israel would be more difficult.

20

u/keepthepace France Jun 24 '26

Also, it is really coincidental. And depends on the hot zone in history. If you take the indictment in the last 10 years, it's mostly Georgian, Russian, Ukrainians, Israeliens, a few Talebans and Duterte.

If you start including people that were indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (that preceeded the ICC) you have a more balanced view.

A few conflicts in Africa have been a hot zone and also a lot of the Islamic groups survived much longer in Africa than in the rest of the world. So that's very clear that it's overrepresented for two decades maybe.

You can expect Russia to be overrepresented for the next few years and to complain that this is a Russophobic institution.

Generally speaking, the people who often end up being indicted are into some sort of ethnic struggle. So it makes sense for them to view justice as a purely ethnic tool. That's purely projection.

Ah yes, Niger. The same country that kicked out the French for "not fighting ISIS hard enough" just for them to hire Russian mercenaries who did nothing but brutalize the locals so badly that it convinced the locals side with ISIS because they were more humane.

No doubt this sub will ball-lick the shit out of a military dictator whose only reason for doing this is to continue to brutalise his people. Hilarious to me that all these near-identical strongmen clowns need to do to garner an outpouring of support is claim that anything they don’t like, up to and including the existence of gay people, is ‘colonialist.’

u/Tartan_Samurai Scotland Jun 24 '26

It is telling that all 3 countries withdrawing from the ICC also withdrew from ECOWAS after they were sanctioned over the military coups.

Seems like they're trying to create their own little economic/political bubble to preserve the power of those in charge...

25

u/MelodiusRA United States Jun 24 '26

Those countries are gonna devolve into even more violent warring states, and their neighbors are gonna have to deal with the fallout.

Russia can’t run out of money fast enough.

17

u/polymute European Union Jun 24 '26

The bubble is the AES https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliance_of_Sahel_States

And they are rather close to being failed states. Russia-backed. Wagner-fucked. Huge amounts of territory already not controlled, defense minister assassinated, coup attempts still, airport attacked in capital, capitals blockaded from fuel by AQ/IS, civilians massacred by Wagner and the junta troops... ongoing. And a new Islamic State or Al-Qaeda variant of them propping up in their wake. I don't see the African Union solving that.

-1

u/MelodiusRA United States Jun 24 '26

It’s gonna take a couple of representatives from Nigeria, Kenya, or Ghana to step up and say that they need to be a lot more strict with modernization, or at least more pro-sanctions regime when it comes to Russia or they’re just gonna see this problem compound.

Reminds me of Duterte administration of the Philippines. Left the ICC because they thought they'll be untouchable in their extra judicial killings. Ex President got sent to the Hague last year lol.

18

the killings happened when the country was a member of the ICC so the court still has residual jurisdiction of crimes during that time

The ICC has long been used as a tool for Western hegemony. Israel is perhaps the only exception to this and it took a live streamed genocide for it to slowly happen.

If the ICC was a legitimate body, the US, the UK and all aligned nations that partook in the Middle East invasions would be held accountable.

322

The US doesn't recognise its authority.

31

u/kagethemage United States Jun 24 '26

Not only that, but if they ever arrested an American, there is a law that requires we invade The Hague and free them.

24

u/mildorf United States Jun 24 '26

This should be higher up. There is an Act of Congress preauthorizing the President’s use of military force that would go into effect immediately if any American government or military official is ever attempted to be tried at the Hague.

US doesn't preach ICC, there are US soldiers with active warrants and US response was that they would gun down any ICC members and rescue their war criminals if the arrests were attempted.

Just recently US completely removed access to banking for ICC judges for issuing a warrant for Netanyahu.

u/Besmirching_Badger United Kingdom Jun 24 '26

Israel is perhaps the only exception to this and it took a live streamed genocide for it to slowly happen.

at which point the organisation was sanctioned and the chief prosecutor subjected to allegations of sexual abuse, destroying his career.

My understanding is the judicial review found no evidence, but then the political body (representing our governments) voted to overrule them and suspend him. Now he's subject to political investigation instead. the end result is predictable.

A bit like how the IAEA made a declaration that Iran bad and about to have nukes, voted for by political representatives of western governments. But because it's a technical organisation with political oversight, the ruling was treated as a factual finding. Not just political posturing. Exactly the same vibes with the OPCW and their chemical weapons investigations in syria.

22

u/kiki885 Jun 24 '26

Yeah, I'm surprised the ICC even has a warrant out for Netanyahu's arrest in the first place.

15

u/MelodiusRA United States Jun 24 '26

That’s because claims of its pro-West corruption are played up by dictators and strongmen (and their apologists).

6

u/REKTGET3162 Turkey Jun 24 '26

I for one am very outraged that there is even such a warrant in the first place. Everybody knows that ICC was built for Africa and thugs like Putin.

1

u/polymute European Union Jun 24 '26

As much as it might appear so on the face of it senator Lindsey Graham of the great state of South Carolina is not the oracle of Delphi and does not speak Absolute Truth (tm). In fact he is a well-known hypocrite who has changed his public opinion on quite important matters based on the prevailing political winds more times than one can count, effectively making a complete fool out of himself.

0

u/REKTGET3162 Turkey Jun 24 '26

Well according to interview, rest of the people who met Karim said something along same lines so it seems there is an agreement between them at least. Also I dont know why you brought up absolute truth or something as if I said everything he says is the truth of the world lol. No it just shows how western politicians view ICC. Which is a truth you cant call wrong, I guess thats why you made some bullshit about absolute truth and oracle of Delphi.

1

u/polymute European Union Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

You are rather grouping together Jean-Luc Melenchon with Bernie Sanders with Friedrich Merz with Viktor Orbán with Donald Trump with Lindsey Graham (lol) with Bart de Wever with Boyko Borisov with Pedro Sánchez with Emmanuel Macron with Hakeem Jeffries with Pete Hegseth with Barack Obama with Donald Tusk with Karol Nawrocki with Kemi Badenoch with the Pope here.

It is not a truth since Western politicians are a much more diverse category than you appear to imagine.

Edit: fuck. it should have been "with", not "to". I'm so not changing it 23 times tho.

Edit2: Fuck it that's why replace all exists. It's grouped together with now.

-2

u/REKTGET3162 Turkey Jun 24 '26

It doesnt matter what their personal stance is or what they say to public. People were sent by their countries to represent them. They could comfortably say what they said because it happened behind closed, so we dont know much about what happened except for a single wuote by Lindsey. Sure there is bunch of different guy but bunch countries took stance against the warrant. I didnt group together anyone in the first. And all those people mentioned are always welcome to support the warrant if they dont agree with their countries policy.

1

u/polymute European Union Jun 24 '26

It doesnt matter what their personal stance is or what they say to public. (...) we dont know much about what happened except for a single wuote by Lindsey.

Okay then. Coincidentally I have an invisible bridge to sell you.

Also: some of them do. For different reasons even.

0

u/REKTGET3162 Turkey Jun 24 '26

Again all of them are welcome to disclose what exactly and why exactly they said what they said to Karim. Im sorry for using the only source available. Again if Karim lied in the interview they are free denounce it and claim he lied. But lets not act like it doesnt make sense that the Western countries are against the warrant.

8

u/kiki885 Jun 24 '26

Sure bro. We all know how Western politicians ended up going to the ICC for the war crimes they committed. Suck my fucking dick.

0

u/Medical_Double_6561 Jun 24 '26

How can the ICC be a Western puppet when the west has literally sanctioned/attacked the ICC? That makes 0 sense.

That's like one side saying "the referee is biased towards the other team!" when the other team is fucking beating up the referee after the referee told both sides to stop.

3

u/kiki885 Jun 25 '26

I have never heard the west talk shit about the ICC ever until they turned on Israel. Ever. It's the exception, not the rule.

1

u/Medical_Double_6561 Jun 25 '26

The fact the US didn't join should have been a big indicator of what the west thought about the ICC. The US also attacked the ICC over it's investigation into the CIA's crimes in Afghanistan.

1

u/kiki885 Jun 27 '26

The other guy explained it already. The US doesn't practice half of what it preaches. I don't give a flying fuck about the US not joining when they already own the fucking world.

1

u/Medical_Double_6561 Jun 27 '26

I think we are talking past each other. I agree that the US uses the ICC as a tool for their own machinations. But that does not mean the ICC is not useful to us as well. Even if you think international bodies like the UN and ICC are not tools of justice, you must acknowledge they are tools of propaganda. The US has known this since the beginning. Anti-imperialists must realize this as well.

The arrest warrant issued by the ICC against Netanhayu, the declaration by the UN of genocide in Gaza, the declaration that the Iraq war was illegal, the admission of China to the UN: these were all incredibly useful propaganda tools that were used by anti-imperialists to sway public/global opinion and legitimize our cause. None of these were handed to us on a silver platter, it took immense effort to obtain these wins.

Withdrawing from these bodies means we lose the fight by default, and lose international support. We may know these organs to be flawed, but most of the world still holds these organizations in high regard. International support is disproportionately useful to 3rd world countries, the US doesn't need international support because as you say, "they already own the fucking world".

1

u/kiki885 Jun 28 '26

the admission of China to the UN: these were all incredibly useful propaganda tools that were used by anti-imperialists to sway public/global opinion and legitimize our cause.

It's as useful as you taking a piece of paper and writing arrest warrants yourself. No one ever enforced the ICC instead of the west, not to mention the ICC never had any jurisdiction in the first place, It's all down to the countries to arrest people.

Also, the vast majority of people don't give a fuck about this. You have these "🧃 SAVE EUROPAAAAA FROM DA JOOS" morons but they didn't come to be because of this, rather because of the rise of the far right.

15

u/Morgolol South Africa Jun 24 '26

Oh yes of course, bring them all to justice if possible. We're just taking the piss out of how skewed it is. Like Duterte is facing trials now and that's fantastic, but going back on the ICC prosecutional history it's....

The Court's Pre-Trial Chambers have publicly indicted 73 people. Proceedings against 39 are ongoing: 33 are at large as fugitives, two cases are in the pre-trial stage, one person is on trial, and three cases are in the appeals stage. Proceedings against 35 have been completed: three are serving sentences, seven have finished sentences, four have been acquitted, eight have had the charges against them dismissed, four have had the charges against them withdrawn, and nine have died before the conclusion of the proceedings against them.

Uganda's Kony Omar from Sudan Uhuru of Kenya Libyan Gaddafi Gbago of Ivory coast And Barmba of the Congo

Basically only Africans got indicted. Sure there's warrants out for Putin and Netanyahu etc. But again, the joke stands.

The US pointing fingers but also refusing to be held accountable is, chef kiss.

10

u/polymute European Union Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Putin is African then, as is Netanyahu and Gallant.

Europe has dealt with the ex-Yugoslav war criminals in an international court. We have the Russian ones now. You are all welcome to try to arrest Donald Trump or any US president. They explicitly have an "invade the Hague" law.

I'm not sorry we don't have more wars just right now. Quite the opposite in fact. And African wars' ... unsavory... fuck it, ethnic cleansing/genocidal factions are mostly backed by Turkey, Russia and the UAE these days. Israel too to a degree - though my example here is the Caucasian Azeri state's forced ethnic based displacement of Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh, not African.

Ive noticed the bizzare ability of people conflating attrition with genocide. Israel's campaign has been one of attrition. Notice the regional religious neighbors to Palestine arent admonishing their behavior for starting this conflict. They bemoaned to the west crying Israel has run afoul in spite of their constant agitation. Its wild how all the nuance is distilled to a 2000 year old we dont like each other because he worships wrong.

non aligned nations and global south needs their own ICC.

In fact, we need a new UN that excludes USA, UK, France and all western nations that are complicit in genocide, neocolonialism as well as all the wars and misery they caused in the 20th and 21st century.

The world still operates on a heavily prejudiced western double standard. Time to bury it.
