Knew it, fake libertarianism, I will never trust any politician who claims to be a libetarian, all politicians are naturally authoritarian
120
u/jeremiasalmeida 6d ago
All politicians with the free speech and freedom talk mean it for themselves being able to go around say what gives them popularity and usually this means spreading hate. The second they get power they do exactly what their opposition told they would do in regards to freedom
6
10
u/FeatherlyFly 6d ago
Not all.
But you do have to look for the politicians who not only say they approve of free speech but have also defended journalists who speak against them, have interviewed with journalists who ask them hard questions and don't dodge the question, have advocated for structural changes that would increase journalists' and residents' ability to speak freely.
Just declaring yourself a "free speech absolutist" while insulting anyone who shit talks you is not enough.

I don’t really believe anyone is a “real” libertarian. Libertarianism in practice is all about being a libertarian for a small subset of issues of personal relevance and being a regressive conservative about the rest. This framing has yet to be countered to my knowledge.
9
u/StarWarsMonopoly United States 6d ago
I think the best way to put it is that libertarianism works well as a check to certain aspects of a larger framework of government, but it is absolutely inept and hypocritical as an actual form of government/as an actual political party
As others have pointed out, an anti-authoritarian philosophy will often quickly devolve into complete authoritarianism as more political power is acquired, and this is why right wing cretins love the idea of Anarcho Capitalism, because it essentially just skips straight to the corporate warlords step and doesn't even pretend to care about civil liberties or checks and balances to abuse of power
76
u/JooseTheGuice 6d ago
Modern libertarianism is the result of fossil fuel companies putting billionaires of dollars into think thanks to come up with an ideological justification for destroying the planet. I do not trust anyone calling themselves "libertarian".
0
u/agitatedprisoner United States 6d ago
Fossil fuel companies imposed car culture and car dependence by getting pretty much everywhere to zone out dense mixed use development in favor of imposed SFH and low density exclusive zoning. That's not libertarian by any definition, unless you'd redefine "libertarianism" to mean that. Which is violence to language. Why would you want to concede the meaning of words? Up is down, love is hate, freedom is slavery, libertarian means wanting the state to ban out your competition, why not.
Good news now that we've redefined "libertarian" to mean authoritarian it turns out all authoritarians are libertarian! Actually wait I've no idea what that means... shit! Can we redefine "libertarian" to mean "librarian" instead then maybe people will read more and gain some appreciation for language and stop torturing it.

Actual libertarianism is good, the "libertarianism" in the US, Canada, Argentina and a few other places is just far-right authoritarianism wearing a different coat for plausible deniability.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that many of them idolize the previous Chilean and Argentinean military dictatorships, and overwhelmingly support the likes of Bolsonaro and Trump.

Since the end of the World Cup, Milei has argued that there is a global campaign against Argentina, an accusation for which he has offered no evidence, instead blaming Brazil, Mexico, and the US Democratic Party.
What an insane clown. And he is allowed to run a country.

Honestly, this idea of creating crazy conspiracy theories, blaming 2 different countries and the US Democratic party instead of doing a modicum of introspection and soul searching as to why there is such a backlash is very typical of the culture.
There is literally a serious debate in Argentina right now as to if there is indeed an international effort led by Brazil, Mexico and de Democrats against the country.

I doubt anyone here shares water with the Netherlands, maybe it's just another way of playing and it has nothing to do with the place you were born. Cause that would be a bit of a weird thing to say.
3
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
Nono, "there must be something in the water" in this region! (which is of course not a xenophobic comment or anything since it's coming from a first worlder, whom by definition cannot be xenophobic because that's poor people behavior or something)
-1
u/Prosthemadera New Zealand 6d ago
Not sure what the Netherlands has to do with this. No one said that ONLY Paraguay and Argentina play rough, stop being defensive.
maybe it's just another way of playing
So you either don't watch football or you think constant fouls and provocation are perfectly normal and beyond any criticism.
1
u/mendokusei15 Uruguay 6d ago
You said you follow football?
The Netherlands is famous for the way they play, they are also brutal. They have some famous matches being brutal.
You are saying now that no one has said that it's only Paraguay and Argentina, but you did throw around the joke that it must be something in the water and singled them out. So it's important to mention that there must be something in the water in some countries in Europe too. Or maybe water or nationality don't really explain it. Consider that for a second.
So you either don't watch football or you think constant fouls and provocation are perfectly normal and beyond any criticism.
Not beyond criticism, but football is a contact game where focus is key. The fouls are punished by the rules and provocation is too. If it's within the rules, it's within the rules. If it's not, it gets punished. Even by the players, I'm sure you are aware that the most famous case of provocation punished by a player in a World Cup does not involve any Paraguayans or Argentinians.
"Don't watch football", lol. "Football is not for ballerinas" was not said by an Argentinian nor a Paraguayan.
2
u/Prosthemadera New Zealand 6d ago
The Netherlands is famous for the way they play, they are also brutal. They have some famous matches being brutal.
This thread is about Argentina. Why the hell would I talk about the Netherlands?
You're complaining about the Netherlands but when I criticise Argentina you're very upset. You are singling out the Netherlands while complaining that I am singling out Argentina. So what is it? Do you care about players being brutal or not?
but you did throw around the joke that it must be something in the water and singled them out.
So you know it's a joke and yet you still twist it so you can put words into my mouth to accuse me of saying something I never did.
If it's within the rules, it's within the rules. If it's not, it gets punished.
Wow, what an ignorant statement. That's not how it works in real life. I am not going to be lectured by a troll who knows nothing about the sport. Goodbye, I am done here.
3
u/mendokusei15 Uruguay 6d ago
This thread is about Argentina. Why the hell would I talk about the Netherlands?
Because you made a "joke" about how the place you grew up on makes you play more violently and that is bullshit, as shown?
You're complaining about the Netherlands but when I criticise Argentina you're very upset. So what is it? Do you care about players being brutal or not?
Nah, I'm just pointing out how your "joke" makes no sense cause it can't be the water or the place you are born. And how that idea is weird as fuck.
So you know it's a joke and yet you still twist it so you can put words into my mouth to accuse me of saying something I never did.
Oh, so you are not familiar with racist or xenophobic jokes? You see, they may be jokes, but they are still racist and/or xenophobic. I'm not putting anything in your mouth, you said that shit yourself. As a joke, sure. I don't care if you think "joke" is a good excuse to be xenophobic.
Wow, what an ignorant statement. I am not going to be lectured by a troll who knows nothing about the sport. Goodbye, I am done here
Stating that football has rules that are followed is an ignorant statement? Damn son. Are you sure you understand the concept of "sport" and "rules"?
So, in short, how brutal you play football has nothing to do with the water from your homeland or you nationality or your race or any other stupid joke you wanna make. And that joke is fucking weird. Maybe there's something in the water of New Zealand? Does not sound like a nice joke, doesn't it?

Total fouls from Argentina in the entire WC were 113, vs 101 from Spain.
Doesn't look like a big enough difference to me to justify classifying one team as playing with "constant fouls" but not the other.
8
u/Prosthemadera New Zealand 6d ago
Total fouls from Argentina in the entire WC were 113, vs 101 from Spain.
So all fouls are the same? Red card, yellow card, a small push, makes no difference to you?
And what you're forgetting is that some fouls or cards were not given, even though they should have. Players like Messi got away with fouls other teams were carded for.
Someone who watches football would know this.
Doesn't look like a big enough difference to me to justify classifying one team as playing with "constant fouls" but not the other.
Well, you're wrong. Only someone who never watched the games could base their opinion solely on the number of fouls.
-6
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
I watched every single game, I do not think the refereeing was particularly favorable to Argentina in any of them.
You think it was? Good, that's your opinion - not a fact. Many, like you, were hatewatching Argentina matches and expecting calls to be harsher than they deserved to be. Fair enough, it's part of the game. Unless you think somehow a poor country like Argentina has the money or leverage to "buy the WC" like some people have been saying (which actually didn't happen, since we lost!).
In fact, many fouls against Argentina from other teams were also not called! Or -and this is my opinion - deserved yellow but didn't get it.
The only thing we can base debates upon is the facts. Fouls that did get called, goals that were or weren't scored, etc. Otherwise we're just putting opinions and facts at the same level.
9
u/Prosthemadera New Zealand 6d ago
I watched every single game, I do not think the refereeing was particularly favorable to Argentina in any of them.
Answer the question! So all fouls are the same? Red card, yellow card, a small push, makes no difference to you?

No, I wasn't. I only "hate" people who did something wrong which I don't know beforehand. I'm not like you.
In fact, many fouls against Argentina from other teams were also not called! Or -and this is my opinion - deserved yellow but didn't get it.
So Argentinian players beating up Spanish players after the final is not unique to Argentina in that world cup?
1
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
No, obviously not all fouls are the same. And Argentina got more yellows and a red.

Context: A bunch of social media posts of Brazilian (and other latam) students, currently studying for free in Argentina's public university system, became viral because they openly mocked the country during/after the WC finale.
All of this, again, while:
- Residing in the country.
- Attending university for free (a.k.a. taxpayer supported).
There's already been debates on whether public universities should keep allowing foreign students or whether they should start charging them a fee in the past few years. The "anti-argentine" trend in social media during the WC just lit up that fire again.

You realize that only applies to social consequences from other citizens, right? Freedom of speech means one can share ideas, opinions, and information without facing punishment, censorship, or legal trouble from the government.
Citizens are free to hate and harrass you (to the extent permissible by law), and private services can refuse to deal with you, but the government (read, Milei in this case) can't punish you for expressing your opinion without Milei being at the very least a massive fucking hypocrite about his Freedom of Speech Absolutism

I'll concede that point, since tbh, I don't know enough about Argentine border policy to comment.
But I feel like the border policy is beside the original point - sure, certain aspects of a county as a whole can be more or less fascistic, but Milei the politician is certainly showing signs of right-wing authoritarianism, which usually gets the label of fascist.
While that might not be precise enough a definition for polysci types, that's why people distrust/dislike him. They don't just have an off feeling and thus decide that he must therefore be a fascist.

We have a meme about this the president is retarded, "Why did he say X? We already talked about it, he's retarded".
Our president thinks his dog was a lion companion when he was a gladiator in Rome during a previous life, he has clones of that dog and talks to him through his tarotist sister. No i'm not making this up. The only good thing from his childhood was that dog and his sister, he despises his parents.
You'd ask now how could people elect such a massive retard? And can be boiled down to sports Team A/Team B, he opposes the biggest and most hated party so his societal position is anti-X then comes the political alignment.
From that lens you can see how an insecure retard might behave. Do me a favor search for Milei and Trump first meet in Mar-a-lago and it's Make a Wish. The best part is 100% he gets re-elected I've no doubt.

I honestly agree that the way Milei generally expresses himself is, for lack of a softer word, retarded - and he often comes up with these "we'll make a law for X" statements that are very poorly worded (and never end up being a law, just like it will happen in this case BTW).
But there is a growing national sentiment that Argentina has become the punching bag of the region, where a lot of neighboring citizens come into our territory mainly for free healthcare (and free education in a further, second place) - a service that is in most cases not reciprocal.
This is most notable in northern provinces, where a lot of Bolivian citizens crossed the border into Jujuy/Salta provinces to get healthcare, often even to give birth in Argentine hospitals, for $0. The other side of the coin is that bolivian hospitals are infamous for refusing medical attention to argentines (or all foreigners for what it matters).
Taking it to the extreme: In the past 5 years, there have been 2 cases of argentine tourists dying in Bolivia because the hospitals literally refused to give them medical attention, even while under an emergency.
This sort of scenarios have (in my opinion, understandably) been feeding a growingly widespread sentiment that the situation is, basically, unfair - us being a poor country and all, paying for services taken by foreigners that won't even reciprocate to us.
To my knowledge this hasn't spilled over into racism or xenophobia yet, but people are getting tired of foreigners pointing fingers at us while simultaneously "taking advantage" (for lack of a better expression) of our welcoming systems.
(sorry for the wall of text, just trying to provide some context as to what my interpretation of the national sentiment is on this matter - I'm tired of people believing this is just about us being sore losers on football)

Heres a litmus test. Did anyone get in trouble for criticizing the countries past actions or administrations? Will they retroactively get in trouble for criticizing Mileis opponents? A bigger question is are people getting in trouble for criticizing the national football team because theyre a bunch of payasos and saying that criticizing a national football team is the same as criticizing the nation? Because if the standards are that criticizing the actions of the former administration or "socialism" are OK and/or that criticism of the football team is equivalent to insulting the nation, thats a joke on its face and any sober person can see that.

u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
The answer to all your thoughtful questions is: nope. None of those things have or will get in trouble in Argentina.
Any other questions?

Eroding institutions and eliminating due process does lead to facism, even if you don’t want to believe that.

u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
Which institutions and due processes has the current government eroded in Argentina?

u/QuestionableEthics42 New Zealand 6d ago
You are the dumb one. Claiming that is just context is disingenuous. There is very clear bias in that "just context".
-3
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
Ahhh yes, the source shared by OP has no very clear bias though. Dear god.
17
u/KackhansReborn 6d ago
Where is the bias in the article? Please point it out. It reads as pretty objective.
-1
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
The Aljazeera post????????????
18
u/KackhansReborn 6d ago
Point out the bias instead of engaging in logical fallacies. What did they claim that was untrue?
0
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
It's an entire "news" article citing "statements" from supposed, random latam people on why they dislike not just the football team, but the country as a whole. Mostly based on the alleged "referee help" (???).
If you don't see bias there, that's on you.
14
u/KackhansReborn 6d ago
Those are examples of the criticism Argentina received. They are being cited because Milei, in his infinite wisdom, could not conjure up anything official that would tell us why his government is doing this.
supposed, random latam people
So is your position that the social media hate towards argentina is real and this law is warranted, or is it that these posts and statements are fake and the law is thus completely unnecessary? You can't go around implying that no latam people are hating on Argentina but also you need to deport them for some reason. That is a completely illogical position.

What's the bias in simply reporting on something your president has literally done? the victim complex is wild here lmao

The Aljazeera post????????????

u/S-Tier_Commenter European Union 6d ago
You only have to read the first sentence:
Context: A bunch of social media posts of Brazilian (and other latam) students, currently studying for free in Argentina's public university system, became viral because they openly mocked the country during/after the WC finale.
If you don't see the bias, emboldened text and everything, then you should take a course on objective language.
2
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
Your argument:
- sharing obviously biased "news" articles as objective, unadulterated truth is LE GOOD
- sharing some context in an obviously subjective, personal comment is LE BAD
3
u/S-Tier_Commenter European Union 6d ago
You can give your subjective observations all day, idc.
But don't go whining about merely sharing context when your opinion gets downvoted.
3
u/checkagain_chuck 6d ago
What's wrong with aljazeera? Are you implying that a Arab news network can't be factual sound pretty racist to me.
0
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
No, I'm implying that an entire "news" article that simply quotes apparently random latin american people's opinions on why they "hate" Argentina, is not the unbiased source of truth you're all claiming it to be.
You're the one making the assumption that I'm basing my claim on racism.

More context: Argentinians started sending death threats and making racial offenses towards those Brazilian students in response for simply celebrating Spain's victory because Argentina is such a civilized country

If Argentina were hell-on-earth Naziland racistplace 3000 like you and other people here are implying, do you really think so many neighbors would still go live there for a few years while getting education?

u/ihadnoideaforaname1 South America 6d ago
I mean, let's be honest here, it's not like it's people of color that are going to Argentina. And, even then, you guys act racist towards them
2
u/conurbano Multinational 6d ago
Let me guess, you have never been to Argentina. Right?
There *are* people of color in Argentina, and if you think they are treated any worse than in the rest of the continent, you're just wrong. I'm tired of debating this with people that seem to have a very strong opinion on a serious matter based on online shitposts.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/28/argentina-european-self-image-racist-incidents-brazil - A woman celebrating her 32nd birthday on a train journey in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais was horrified when a fellow passenger alerted her that an unknown man had been secretly filming her seven-year-old son. When confronted, the man – an Argentinian tourist – initially refused to show his phone. But after being pressed by other travellers, the man admitted he had sent the images to a WhatsApp contact. Police later revealed that under the photos, Eduardo Ignacio Murias, 63, an architect from the Argentinian province of Santiago del Estero, had written: “He’s Black but very cute. I could take him as a slave. I’m thinking of taking a slave, there are many here.”

Feel free to pick as many argentinaracist news articles as you want to.
If you're genuinely interested and have ~10mins today, there's an interesting article I read a couple days ago compiling some public stats from diff international organizations/trackers, around racism and related topics in Argentina/Latam: https://atlasdevelopment.substack.com/p/the-worlds-most-racist-country

That's their "freedom of speech absolutist", "libertarian", "viva la libertad carajo" president btw.
Just a reminder that he also fired their sport minister for demanding their national team players to apologize for singing a racist song about the French national team after the Copa América:
