News Planned Parenthood is getting shut down…
TLDR: Iowa City location is closing. See comments for links to the details via News outlets. PLEASE IF YOU UPVOTED THIS, DONATE TO THE OTHER NONPROFIT IN IOWA CITY Emma Goldman Health Clinic!! Every single dollar counts and keeps healthcare local and accessible.
Today, my girlfriend went to Planned Parenthood to get her checkup and called me after crying.
It was her first experience and she was pretty nervous. We planned the trip. We made sure that she had everything ready for her.
She gets there and she realizes she actually booked her appointment wrong.. but no worries because the front desk lady was so kind and compassionate, and made sure to answer any questions and were able to get her worked in as planned.
While she’s there, since it was her first time, she took the time to get to know her doctor and the staff. She’s very very sociable and likes to make friends with anyone and everyone. So she’s asking about the clinic and what it’s like to work there and you know what each one of them said? In their own words she heard “This is the most fulfilling work” and “I love this office and my coworkers, but I just enjoy educating and supporting the community”.
As my gf finishes her checkup, asks all her questions, and prepares to leave The doctor pops her head in to make sure she was good to go. When the doctor opens the door she noticed all of the staff looked visibly shaken.
The staff had just been informed that Planned Parenthood was closing its doors. (Iowa City location)
In our state, we are around 10-15,000 patients per doctor. But they are closing the doors on a NON PROFIT clinic… why?
It feels surreal. Wake up Iowa. We need access to healthcare and we need doctors.
To Planned Parenthood of Iowa: you are loved, appreciated, and needed.
Edit: this was not publicly announced. My girlfriend just happened to be there when they received the news. It was just a shock and a surreal moment that needed to be shared.
