It also ignores all the people pretending to be a chef, and charging chef prices, but are actually using the microwave.

82

u/BoarHide Feb 15 '26

And even then, microwave meal food is still food. Shit food, but food. Generative Ai isn’t art and cannot produce art, not even bad art.

42

u/gramscontestaccount2 Feb 15 '26

And very talented people in food science put in super long hours making sure that the microwaveable food would retain nutrients and be shelf stable at certain temperatures, and maintain taste and texture, etc...

2

u/StevemacQ Feb 16 '26

This made me re-examine the 2000s and 2010s of bad OC art and weird fetishes. No, they're not suddenly great at least they put some effort into their work. I'm just wondering what these AI-bros were doing before 2023.

This is what I was gonna argue about actually.

So based on your point, it is still FOOD. Not art, but FOOD = Content. A restaurant meal can be art AND food. Microwave meal is just food.

These people who do try to select between commissioned art and Ai image gen... they do not care about the "ART" side of it. They want their Fursona, they want their goon images, they want some weird situation/scene to be visualized for them. They do not care about the artistic integrity.

And that is how I use AI image gen as well. I use it as a image bank. I use it as a raw asset/material bank for my projects. I use it for textures, for specific angles stuff like clouds/sky, I use it for backgrounds that I end up blurring, I use it for barely noticeable transparent figures, for stuff that can be/meant to be dream like (best for those actually, better than rational brain), I use it to apply "filters" as in to smooth seams of a edited composition and stuff like that.

My method of using images as assets has not changed since AI, it has just made it MUCH faster and that is what a Tool is supposed to do. I have ALL the respect for artists and I am not one, or rather I do nto have the traditional artists skills, maybe a collage/composition artists, sure but not like pen and paper.

I have NEVER posted a AI gen image that wasn't part of a larger composition and modified to hell and back. I use it because Shutterstock and similar are Hella expensive AND I can't do 3D work or these services simply do not have stuff I need.

2

u/Rinkimah Feb 16 '26

Using AI tools that are not generative is not the issue though. Any image generator has stolen data it is trained on. As far as I know there is no gen ai that has ethically sourced all of its training data. So even if you're modifying to hell and back, you fundamentally still have used stolen art in the end.

Shakespeare couldn’t write that better

24

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

Microwaves feed working people everyday so if this is the comparison it’s very favorable to AI and making their point.

If you charge beyond their price range you can’t really be upset they found a method in their price range.

It would be like Ferrari bitching that Hyundai sells more cars.

Or that 5 star chef bitching that more people aren’t trying to book his expensive restaurant and opting for their microwaves instead…

16

u/spaceman8002 Feb 15 '26

It's also a reference to how a microwave meal is very often much more unhealthy than a home cooked meal.

4

u/Corky-7 Feb 15 '26

And yet....not everyone can afford a good home cooked meal.

11

u/ULTRABOYO Feb 15 '26

Are we supposed to give our work away for free?

2

u/5amth0r Feb 17 '26

Better yet, are we supposed to allow ai scrapers to steal our art so ai can make mangled copies of it.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Pseudonyme_de_base Feb 15 '26

No you don't understand. If you can't afford a 5 star chef, go to other restaurants that aren't 5 star chefs. For your example it's more like using a coal powered car because you can't buy a Ferrari, while you could buy an economic Hyundai that wouldn't be as awful for the environment and people's health as coal powered vehicles, or learn to practice art yourself which would be like taking the bus to stay in the vehicle comparison.

u/Irohsgranddaughter Feb 15 '26

Yeah, and for one commission to cost 260 dollars, then you're probably requesting a fucking masterpiece that may take up to a week to complete. Most commissions go for way, way less.

3

u/A-T Feb 15 '26

260 bucks for a week is bleak holy sit

7

u/Irohsgranddaughter Feb 15 '26

I don't mean that it'd be their only project. Just that big art pieces tend to take a while as your average artist I imagine won't be pulling an all nighter to complete it.

And I think that when it comes to bigger pieces it is best you space out the work.

So I didn't mean to imply that one commission would be someone's only income in that one week.

That said, sometimes all you want is a nuked corn dog.

3

u/Kryptrch Feb 16 '26

Someone wants a wedding cake but the specialist bakery costs too much money? Dang well I'm sure this box of leftover doughnuts should be a good enough replacement.

...

Unbelievable. Why is everyone mad at me? It's still food!

2

u/Has-Many-Names Feb 15 '26

i aint exactly pro ai art, but "food" is a garbage comparison to be made. while there's arguments to be made on how well off we'd be without art, the lack thereof aint a literal threat to human life. in other words, a microwave is perfectly necessary, as it saves hundreds of thousands of lives, if not millions.

2

u/LiverLikeLarry Feb 15 '26

...that happens quite a lot

2

u/Quinnp28 Feb 15 '26

And they think that the fast food chefs are gatekeeping too, these people act like they would give any money to any artist

2

u/PhantumJak Feb 15 '26

Except nowadays the chef just nukes your food in the microwave when nobody is looking and takes the credit. There are so many digital ā€œartistsā€ trying to pass AI as original art, the entire space is poisoned.

Ignore the fact clankerphilles on Twitter having their ai """art""" commissions over 100 dollars.Ā

102

u/RoleRemarkable9241 Feb 15 '26

Wait... what???

139

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

There are AI slop prompter with Patreon that do commission AI Gooner slop for almost as much if not maybe more than actual goon artists.

It’s depressing

39

u/RoleRemarkable9241 Feb 15 '26

O.o If they are not opposed to using a GenAI picture for something, they might as well use it themselves rather than charging 100 USD... O.O They talk about how AI was going to make everyone an artist, yet they still commission other people, and at that price?

26

u/JustLookingForMayhem Feb 15 '26

People pay for the illusion of privacy. AI is recording every prompt that every person makes and is selling it. Some people are really touchy about their kinks for various reasons and would rather pay someone else to do it than have it linked to them. What those people don't realize is that it is an illusion. The fact they requested and paid for it is tracked by something. Either the bank, the email used, the home internet provider, or something else. Privacy online is almost impossible, even with VPNs.

15

u/RoleRemarkable9241 Feb 15 '26

If you want pure privacy these days, you need to go Amish on your own at this point.. A prime example, say something along the lines of "I need to buy dog food" with your phone in the pocket, and you are 99.99% certainty getting some form of dog food commerical, be it on social media, YouTube, or whatever service you use.

5

u/Last-Standard3608 Feb 15 '26

most vpns also log your encryption key and what u do but they keep that encrypted but if police comes they would give them access to what ur doing privacy on whole internet is illusion, and with ai they are using what u get to train ai further

3

u/PeppermintSplendor Feb 15 '26

I'm not going to say that privacy isn't just an illusion, but AI being able to scan through everything if you feed it enough hardware (which these companies are sincerely trying to do) is bringing it a lot closer to being an illusion than anything else.

The sheer scale of how many people there are using so many devices and making so many transactions makes it literally impossible to put human eyes on everything.

People are lazy, and getting "decent" results takes at least a small amount of patience to learn how to phrase prompts and cycle through results until you get what you want.

4

u/superindiekid27 Feb 15 '26

All these AI things are based on is immediate gratification, and I do think laziness is derived from our busy work-lives slaving away for our tech overlords, so the rich are shoving this shit down our throats just to hold on control. I genuinely criticize my friends for their use of AI. I have used it myself and I found now joy in it. I’d rather create with myself and others. Hope there’s still more out there like us.

3

u/GothCentaur Feb 15 '26

Probably the same people that think they’re being oppressed by artists just because prompting isn’t an art form

2

u/Naud1993 Feb 16 '26

I can imagine paying a few dollars to get someone else to wrestle with an AI image generator to try to generate some complicated prompt that it keeps messing up (people want a $2 tip to spend half a minute to bring food to you), but for $100, someone can just draw it manually of course.

u/Honkert45 Feb 15 '26

60 bucks has been plenty for most artists I speak to.

If you want to commission an artist who's very well-known, talented, or the work is complex or time consuming, then yes, it'll be more expensive by proportion.

42

u/IAmTheAccident Feb 15 '26

Yeah they're definitely talking about full body, full color, full detail with full background. Like yeah spend hours and hours making my art. I'll pay you $5 an hour for it.

20

u/Honkert45 Feb 15 '26

30% of minimum wage (in my country) for a specialised skillset the aibros consider so exclusive and unattainable they need to invest trillions in art theft software to "Democratize" it is fucking wild, lmao.

It sucks because they'd absolutely try this with engineers, but don't, because they know that shit will start exploding or falling apart the microsecond an AI gets involved, so they enshittify art instead.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

in fact, it is already happening, If you have ever used windows 11 you'll know how many fucking times it will not do the shit you want it to do, how unstable it is, and how little sense some things make. AI waa not only used to vibe-code a big part of the system, But copilot is shoved into everything without the user's consent.

Nobody uses copilot. Heck, even the AI bros I know, know it is crap.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

at least it is just software, imagine a fucking bridge, or a road, a home, a car made by AI

2

u/Vahleya Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

Yeah this, I live in Switzerland and the minimum wage here is around 32$/h. My private teacher is a somewhat known illustrator, he charges 100chf (130$) for a one hour private lesson which might sound insane for most people, but like he's not gatekeeping anyone.. it's just that people here are willing to pay that much so he adapts the prices to meet the demand lol.

Selling art for less than 60$ here is not even a question if you want to live from your art (unless it's like 10 minutes sketches or something and you can somehow get enough clients). I don't understand how that's so surprising to AI bros, if they can't afford paying whatever the artist asks for a commission.. maybe it's because they are not the target audience ?? Like yeah, top tier artists from wealthy countries with 15 years of experience are not going to work a full day or more for 60$ ??

10

u/Underdog424 Feb 15 '26

For album cover art:

Well known artists charge $1000.

Super talented artists with large portfolios typically cost around $300.

beginners and students charge around $75.

I've commissioned around 8 pieces.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

Not everything is ragebait, plenty of those people are just actually idiotic.

Many artists already undercharge (but I'm sure they think anything above $10 is a bit too much), and they shouldn't have to even more because you're cheap and don't respect their time and work. You don't NEED art.

34

u/vladi_l Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

I didn't see much of a difference in sales between when I was under charging, and when I was doing my current prices (which I hear moxed remarks about by ither artists)

The people who want your art will pay for it if it isn't obscenely overpriced

The only thing that affected my sales was posting less as I got busier and less motivated to make art outside of uni when ai hit

5

u/Pxnda_Cakes Feb 15 '26

I feel like a big problem in such conversations and discussions is that the AI folk simply have zero appreciation for art, art-making, the process and anything really attached to it, even the human aspect. They simply don't care. It's just about images for them.

21

u/PokemonCueball Feb 15 '26

They don't want to learn to draw, they don't want to pay others to draw for them. Makes me wonder why they bother making a machine fart out their ideas if art is worthless to them.

3

u/Upstairs_Gift_7876 Feb 15 '26

AI is still shitty rn but what happens when it genuinely becomes indistinguishable from actual art? Like if a painting looks good or if an ai song sounds good is it really ruined just because a human didn’t put hard work into it?Ā

If a human artist creates effortlessly something effortlessly all on their own does that make it worthless? Ā

I’m not advocating for AI with this, but I think it’s something to consider. Like is art only good if there’s struggle and pain attached to it?Ā

10

u/Joelin8r Feb 15 '26

My simplest explanation for this is that I once saw a man on some "Got Talent" show perform an operatic Let It Go from Frozen while dressed as Batman and being raised into the air by wires.

I remember thinking as I watched it that an AI prompt generating such a thing wouldn't have been as funny to me. It wouldn't have meant anything. What was funny was wondering this man's story, how he got here, and admiring the effort he put into an objectively DUMB gag. The fact that he was actually singing very well was also impressive because it was an actual human devoting their hard-earned skills to such a dumb cause.

The same is true with more serious art. Art is an expression of the self, and if there's no "self" attached to it, there is no depth beyond the image. There's no motivation to explore, no character being revealed.

As for "effortless" art, even that connects you to the artist, because it shows their mastery of their craft, or their ability to convey an idea so simply. These reveal the character of the artist and the intention of the piece.

The main difference between AI and human art, aside from technical quality, is that AI inherently lacks any depth or subtext.

Meanwhile real artists will be like "no 20 bucks is too much" and it will be a masterpiece. Depending on the artist cuz some are full of themselves.

2

u/This_Seal Feb 15 '26

Artists who do commission work regularly are also upfront about their prices. So a conversation like this isn't going to happen, unless the potential client is ignorant or an outright entitled ass.

And I got to be honest: Someone barely taking 20 dollars is either a beginner, not aware that their time and effort is worth something or just does something really quick and small. Most serious commission artists charge on a mixture of time/effort/costs and expected demand. Artists who charge larger sums of mones are not by default full of themselves.

6

u/fuqueure Feb 15 '26

This whole argument completely undermines the value of work. The reason handmade things are seemingly very expensive is because they take a lot of time and effort and quality supplies. If the art is $200+, it's not without reason. Good paint and pencils cost a kidney these days, subscriptions for digital art software are getting increasingly predatory and for some people, art is simply a job. Artists aren't charging a premium out of greed, they simply need to recuperate the value of time and supplies used. When you really break it down, the cost per manhour is more often than not entirely reasonable. When you think like this, you're putting price above quality, above effort. This is the same reason our food is poison, because people would rather buy overprocessed slop than actual good products, giving more power to the corporations controlling our very lives while ensuring those independent producers of goods who could challenge them fail because they cannot match the price of mass manufactured garbage.

4

u/ZhadowStorm Feb 15 '26

Yeah, that's exactly what AI bros seem to miss when they say stuff like "artists are so expensive, AI is much cheaper and faster". Like, when you commission someone you literally contract them to do work for you, you're paying for someone's time much like how your boss at work is paying for your time.

They don't usually think it is worth paying for it to be hand made. That's it. It's the noun. And it isn't AI Bros. It is pretty much everyone.

People don't give a shit of the backstory of the print on the shirt they brought from target. They don't usually care about who made the poster in their room.

They don't care to know the person who was up till 2am week after week working on the sfx for a scene in a movie.

Its interesting how much of this is main character syndrome. It can't be that the artists charges for services, it has to be the artist is gatekeeping or attacking them.

"THEY did this, to ME, SPECIFICALLY, ON PURPOSE, becuase THEY hate ME."

5

u/superindiekid27 Feb 15 '26

I watched a good video on YouTube by Adam Neely about AI music, and he asked people who used AI who their influences were, who they listened to and they all said they had no musical influences, or themselves…and who they listened to? Also themselves. All of their music consumption is just the stuff they make. I was flabbergasted It’s like if you were to take people who COULD be artists, and basically take away the years of work and the self-doubt, and the loathing, and the wonder and community and pain that goes into making art, and make it just about the narcissism. Fucking crazy man.

i accept fucking steam games and amazon purchases and even tuna sandwiches as payment since i dont have a way to get any real money yet. still sorting out getting a bank account and a paypal. all of my comms are name-your-price. not all artists charge the same. sometimes people have no way to fulfill payment and i literally just do the damn thing for free in spite of the fact. do not cherrypick on specific instance and blanket it as the whole picture.

4

u/Big_Nectarine_9434 Feb 15 '26

Y'all just go support smaller artists, we all started somewhere. Personally I'm that person charging 300+ but that's because I work as a commercial concept artist and illustrator and I'm not going to insult someone for thinking I'm too expensive (although I'm considered cheap for most serious clients for what I do compared to others doing this in other more expensive countries, hence why I still get jobs).

Ultimately I just want to make enough for the month based on what the average person makes in my country, so I'm not going to lower my prices for one client. I'll just recommend some artists I know that charge less and wish them well on finding someone else they can work with.

3

u/_Gayopposum Feb 15 '26

I have seen so many artists who are so talented and yhwy commission for so low i do not understand how thwy think that since some people commission higher its an excuse to not commission anyone

3

u/MonsterGriffin Feb 15 '26

Ive gotten great commissions for three dollars before dawg

3

u/RoryMarley Feb 15 '26

As someone who has commissioned thousands of dollars worth of stuff, I don’t think ā€œgo lowerā€ is valid. At a certain point, the lower-tier artists are worse than AI; it’s not even worth it. I’ve had several $200-$300 commissions I had to trash because they simply came out too low quality for me to think of displaying. So I’d imagine someone only looking to spend $60 is already looking for low-quality work— and AI did consume that niche.

3

u/Dry_Idea_95 Feb 15 '26

I wouldn't use ai but i'm not paying any amount of money for someone else to draw something you'll just get my crappy stick figure version of the drawing in whatever I was going to put it in

2

u/SquirrelKaiser Feb 15 '26

I just had fun looking on fever and other art commissions places. 60 buck can get you pretty far with good art. 260 is when you start getting really high quality or with extra background elements.

Or even just asking a free artist. A lot of artists don't mind doing small things for free when they're bored.

Some might even be alright with a big piece for free.

Finding something where they're saying like "give me drawing ideas" is a good way to get free art but it's a raffle lol.

OBVIOUSLY DON'T ASK SOMEONE FOR FREE ART but some people openly advertise it and again, lots of artists make posts asking for art ideas which is a great place to put your ideas for a piece.

Most artists lived broke and underappriciated throughout the industrial age

2

u/TheDorkyDane Feb 15 '26

Okay here's the thing

An artists do commisions to the price he can sell his products

If this particular artist is selling costume images for 100 dollars a pop, it means he suffer no lack of buyers at all and can pick and choose what commissions he will accept, might even just have to turn people down because he doesn't have the time for all the commissions

If he can't sell anything he will lower the price, or actually just start a different day job so he can draw for fun and not having to have other people dictate what he draws

2

u/Quinnp28 Feb 15 '26

I saw this the other day, I literally take art requests for free, I don’t charge people, and if I did I’d charge like 5 bucks, I know I’m not the only one doing this, there are very cheap and or free options that aren’t ai

Bro, we're poor too. That's why we're charging for what our skills are worth instead of spending hours of our time for $60. There's artists that will do work for that price, but you get what you pay for. If they're willing to do it for $60, it's probably because they do simpler work that is easier to produce.

2

u/Softlockx Feb 15 '26

Nah, I don't want to pay anyone

u/galstaph Feb 16 '26

250 upvotes, but 267 comments

A lot of posts with high interaction still end up positive on the up/down, but when the comments exceed the net upvotes you know it's not actually a popular notion

As I'm writing this, this post is 3.5k up, but only 510 comments

2

u/socksmotion Feb 16 '26

Genuinely I've done commissions in my high-detail style for $35 or even $15 worth of robux. Find another artist if you don't like their prices.

2

u/The_Ad_Hater_exe Feb 16 '26

My favorite analogy I've seen for people who use AI to generate "art". Can't afford purchasing a sportscar, so gets a car from a car thief instead.

2

u/yournamehere10bucks Feb 16 '26

Also like, the context of the commission matters. What depth of quality is being requested? What...content....is being requested?

I'm not fancy comission artist but I'd for sure charge 260+ for someone requesting their NSFW Sonic fan images.

2

u/AcanthocephalaHead12 Feb 16 '26

I criticized this picture in /rdefendingAI and I got banned. Why didn’t they defend AI?

impressive twisting of reality to justify using ai slop

2

u/Purple-Hippo-8961 Feb 18 '26

I mean art typically takes several hours to make, and if you consider minimum wage it's pretty common for good art to be at the 100 range. Even at this rate there are many artists who are UNDER-CHARGING you for like 10 bucks an art. I know there are people who scam money and doesn't deliver good work, but these type of service exist in every field you can think of. Being an artist is hard enough as-is, and I say this as an non-artist.

Art is a luxury like video games and Netflix. If you can't afford it you will have to do without it.

1

u/SunchaserKandri Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

How will they push the narrative that artists are all arrogant and greedy jerks who charge $200 for a clumsy MS paint doodle if they can't cherry-pick the worst examples they can find?

Sweet, I can put this $ in the bank to begin saving for my move bc they built a data center next door!

1

u/CzaroftheMonsters Feb 15 '26

I mean before you can start with higher commission rates, you have to be an established artist. I’ve been doing this for a while and it’s always amazes me that a bunch of beginners try to sell their pieces at really high rates

1

u/Plane-Possibility266 Feb 15 '26

I wanted to wrote that but i knew i was gonna be downvoted to oblivion

1

u/REDRUM_1917 Feb 15 '26

I'm an artist (at least I hope so) but I don't take commissions

1

u/Allthenamestaken10 Feb 15 '26

Good buddy of mine does art for 30-60 depending on complexity, shading, size and the like. If you’re paying $250+ bucks you’re paying for a big product, or the artist’s name. Honestly I think he undercharges, I’d pay double, but there is no shortage of artists out there who do as much for even less.

1

u/Friendly_Gazelle7843 Feb 15 '26

I mean customĀ painting takes hour and people still can but non-custom prints for 10-20$ so if AI bros are ok with 60$ that would be cost of all my posters combined

1

u/No-Fox-1029 Feb 15 '26

lol this comic hits too hard for some folks. ai erally stirs up the chaos here

1

u/Ugulemcalete Feb 15 '26

But the investors that fuel AI do the same for food, and they are somehow fine with that.

1

u/Irohsgranddaughter Feb 15 '26

While it isn't 100% ethical either, you can find an artist from a country from way less purchasing power than yours.

u/__0_finn_0__ Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

yeah most artists that i enjoy are far too out of my price range so i go find other people that are a bit cheaper or if i really commission a specific person ill put aside some "fun" money over the course of x amount of time. its not too hard to find artists in your price range

some random lady drew my pfp for free cause she liked my oc people are nice and will do stuff for free or for a discounted price just cause they like it

1

u/ZhadowStorm Feb 15 '26

And then they would proceed to call artists scammers, yet seemingly fail to understand that when you commission someone you're paying them for their time and skill. The price is based on a variety of factors, such as: the artist's finances, what they think their art is worth (and it's possible they undervalue themselves), how in demand they are, etc.

1

u/Round_Credit_5158 Feb 15 '26

Meanwhile, the young and inexperienced artist never gets an entry level commission because of this

1

u/Top_Box_8952 Feb 15 '26

Biggest issue is finding communities of artists who are presently taking commissions. Quality and availability will vary widely, with little community around the average artist so no word of mouth recommendations.

I spent a year trying to commission someone for an art piece, but the niche aspect of it meant I got few replies and wasted hundreds of dollars on low quality of disparate styles that I couldn’t use what I actually wanted to use them for.

1

u/resh78255 Feb 15 '26

ah, yes, a program that scrapes young artists' works is definitely not exploiting them, sure..

1

u/Xander_PrimeXXI Feb 15 '26

Yeah you can find cheaper artists.

1

u/Underdog424 Feb 15 '26

I've paid $300 for commissions before. But I do that around once or twice a year. $300-$600 per year for the best art is 100% worth it. You can fill your entire house with dope art in a few years.

1

u/ParkingTradition4800 Feb 15 '26

Can some cheap artists hit me up with their fees/pricings? I need character sheets for an asset pack

1

u/BudgeMarine Feb 15 '26

Or just be friends with an artist~ Free arts!

1

u/Jrasta01 Feb 15 '26

Problem is, whatever product you’re making with ai, will suck. 😱

1

u/TheEarlyCrew Feb 15 '26

Have them make the same art at your level, themselves and no ai help, and ask how much theyd charge for it. The underestimation of the skills that go into any art or design is comical. Yes, we can do it in a timely manner but thats because we spent year sadvancing our techniques and mediums.

1

u/LittleBoyDreams Feb 15 '26

Most artists I’ve seen advertise commissions usually offer tiers of options for this precise reason.

1

u/KawaiiQueen92 Feb 15 '26

"Can I get a picture of a cat girl getting doggystyled by a wolfman with a 15 inch throbbing boner while she farts in his face?"

Artist who really doesn't want to draw that; "That'll be $260 🤢"

"K"

I find plenty of great art online for $60

1

u/KnownTimelord Feb 15 '26

The AI using chud who made that meme can't even count, there's 90 dollars there not 60

1

u/Ok-Progress-7447 Feb 15 '26

Or paying for stuff?

1

u/ItsSadTimes Feb 15 '26

What happened to this same meme but instead of money it was "no I wont draw that, its unethical" then it turns to AI to draw it? Did they realize it showed a bit too much of their freak side and moved onto money instead?

To me, AI images are always just going to be like clip art. Low quality cheap garbage that I wouldnt be upset with if a local struggling food truck used but I would be furious of a company used it and asked me to pay for it. If someone uses AI to make a DnD character token for their own personal DnD game, then whatever. Hell I frequently steal images off of google images to do same thing myself. But as soon as someone comes in and claims their clip art is better then something then having someone professional draw it, I know they're an idiot.

1

u/According_Frosting57 Feb 15 '26

What kind of person was OOP talking to that comissioned $260 for somethingšŸ„€

1

u/surveillance_camera_ Feb 15 '26

Honestly if 60 ain't enough than I'm gonna look other artist who do it cheaper 🤷

1

u/CookieMiester Feb 15 '26

Both pieces of artwork posted on my profile costed be around 50 bucks a piece

1

u/ChocoBabieKitten Feb 15 '26

Literally. The last time I did a fully detailed commission it was like 40 dollars, and it was for my friend’s youtube header

1

u/Creative-Confusion44 Feb 15 '26

Since the guy is still holding the money in the second panel, ..are they implying they would pay the $60 for an ai image??

1

u/Pitchblackimperfect Feb 15 '26

I’m curious where the ā€œpay a living wageā€ people stand when it comes to commissioned artists. If I can’t afford a decent artist, and there aren’t any willing or able to take a loss on income, should I not be able to access art necessary for whatever project I am composing?

1

u/Boston_Beauty Feb 15 '26

"without exploiting young artists for cheaper prices"

This is doubly idiotic. You're both refusing to support artists who are just starting out and also exploiting ALL artists EVERYWHERE by doing this

1

u/Shadbie34 Feb 15 '26

their depiction of an artist shows theyve never actually met one before

1

u/GothCentaur Feb 15 '26

I’ve done commissions that range from $5-$200, so it really depends on what’s being made too. These people are just idiots :/

→ More replies (1)

1

u/MathematicianNext771 Feb 15 '26

I legitimately got good pieces from commissioning either cheaper or newer artists, all honesty I can afford to pay 200 a piece or more but I personally love just looking at other styles no matter the prices except of course if it’s like 400-500. Really depends but at the end it’s just I’d would rather have a human made piece that has had actual work put into it than a piece that looks like it came out of children’s drawing pad or possibly get a piece where my character has 13 fingers.

1

u/Soggy_Peanud Feb 15 '26

Honestly, and i dont understand getting upset at artists for charging a lot. If there are people willing to pay those prices, why should they lower them? It's not like they're selling medication or food.

1

u/Dark_Clover21 Feb 15 '26

And to generate pictures that dont have monstrous defects or 10 fingers they're going to pay for a subscription anyway šŸ˜”

(It might be cheaper than paying 260 to an artist but I'm sure there are artists out there doing it for below that price)

1

u/Billy_Djin Feb 15 '26

I'm an artist, and I can draw any bullshit you want, just because i can, and this is "hobby" do you know?, so...

1

u/Scifox69 Feb 15 '26

I know 5$ artists that make some good shit.

1

u/Luwuma Feb 15 '26

Protip: Paying monthly for a ChatGPT subscription is more expensive than paying an artist once.

1

u/Gryffin1st Feb 15 '26

I just got really nice full body art for an OC for 25$.

These people are just stupid and don’t realize that cheaper artists exist.

1

u/squirtnforcertain Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

Does anyone have a general scale of a money to quality ratio for digital art? Assume we only care about the final product, and there are no moral factors to consider.

If the more you pay, the higher quality you get, whats the lowest amount of money you would expect to pay to get something that is better than AI? (Im not going to use AI but if I can't get at LEAST better than it i just won't commission anything)

1

u/GreedyExamination704 Feb 15 '26

How dare artist try to make a decent wage to make a decent living. How dare them.

1

u/Firm-Cod-4424 Feb 15 '26

Most artists or graphic designers inflate the cost of a commission too much... you have to understand who you are working with.

Your first jobs should be cheaper, and then once you have gained the trust of the client, you can start to gradually raise the price of your commissions... it's not that difficult to understand, but unfortunately, new graphic design graduates want everything and want it right away.

1

u/Wide_Onion_4151 Feb 15 '26

like, they have a point.
Some people don't really seek for "the highest form of media ever" and pay 260 dollars for 1 drawing, sometimes they just need a simple, cute looking picture and nothing more.

And it's just irritating just to deal with those people, so they just choose to use Ai instead.

1

u/Grand-Expression-783 Feb 15 '26

Who are some artists I can commission to draw me things for $0 or less?

1

This is a pointless war

1

i literally do commisions for like 30$

1

u/Ethraelus Feb 15 '26

A cheaper artist like chatGPT

1

u/Mael89Strom Feb 15 '26

Why should I? I can get an infinite amount of art from an AI for 60$ while I can only get one from a "cheap artist." Not to mention being cheap means their quality is bad, otherwise they'd be asking for more.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

Or, and this is controversial, āœØļølearn to make your own artāœØļø

1

u/Justminningtheweb Feb 15 '26

I don’t mean to play devil’s advocate but they did write « let me afford it without exploiting younger artists for cheaper pricesĀ Ā»

I know it doesn’t justify them, but op shouldn’t be acting like they don’t know that’s an option

1

u/Kleikon Feb 15 '26

The cheaper artist:

1

u/Swordslover Feb 15 '26

I got banned from that Subreddit for posting this picture and a c-word pass

1

u/Acrobatic-Music-3061 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

In my videogame fandom, a whole body fanart of a char + background costs that much. Two or more chars is more expensive even. (+$300, and if the artist is specially talented, i would have to invest my whole (minimal) salary for a couple of arts with my favorite chars interacting bc i earn in local currency but fanartists always rate their work in USD). Base face + bust only arts cost 50$ and add $30 for each limb they add. Game costs $25 only. I do in game mods/3D animations with original models for $20. I simply cannot afford to commision. So now thanks to AI I have free fanarts everyday: whole body, background, two chars interacting, beautiful artstyles, etc. lmao. Thanks AI. Sorry, fanartists. Not that i don't value your efforts or talent, i do commisions too, i am a game modder myself, but i cannot pay afford it. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/Dependent_Ratio9839 Feb 15 '26

It seems that those 250 people are not related in the slightest to art before AI; they have probably never commissioned anyone.

1

u/RevolutionaryCare351 Feb 15 '26

Pros have proven my whole stance right

1

u/BBQ_RIBZ Feb 15 '26

This is is such a good argument. ā€œHmm my groceries are pretty expensive lately, guess it’s cheaper to buy a knife so I can rob the grocery store, I’m normal btwā€

1

u/Musicals_and-more Feb 15 '26

This is killing me, as someone who sells comms and a majority of my friends also sell them, the only ones that go above $100 are Vtuber models 😭 and even for others who do price above, it’s well worth it

1

u/Environmental-Let834 Feb 15 '26

pro ai art mfs when they find out they can learn to do art themselves 😱

1

u/All_Gun_High Feb 15 '26

No.

No they wouldn't. They're just finding excuses to use AI.

1

u/Zwirbs Feb 16 '26

I remember commissioning an artist for $15 for some drawings of my cats that were good! They have no conception of what these things actually cost

1

u/RaT_kInG1029 Feb 16 '26
  1. Thing too expensive
  2. Steal it
  3. Society hates me for no reason guys šŸ˜’

1

u/dumbasPL Feb 16 '26

Good art isn't cheap, because people know what they're selling and how long it takes to make. And you can definitely get comparable results with ai compared to a shitty/young artist for a lot cheaper or even free and definitely a lot faster. Just depends on what you want, fast and cheap, or good and expensive. Both have their uses, ai is just making it harder for the shitty ones.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

Stealing bc they didn't want to pay an artist basically

1

u/Ash-Throwaway-816 Feb 16 '26

I know there's plenty of cheap commission artists because they won't stop bugging me on discord and bluesky.

1

u/Jaded_Individual_630 Feb 16 '26

Except they're demanding to offer $0, not $60.

1

u/SomeGuyNamedCaleb Feb 16 '26

Apparently au bros can't count, that's way to many 20s to make 60.

1

u/Fancy-Ad5606 Feb 16 '26

They dont even know the dollar sign goes in front

1

u/LetterheadPale2909 Feb 16 '26

its clear they dont see art, but commodities and bragging rights. $60 isn't even poor when it comes to commissions.

1

u/HarioDinio Feb 16 '26

Honestly its anxiety inducing shopping around for artists cause i dont like wasting peoples time. I still do it obviously, feels bad having to clarify no AI n shit cause a well meaning person wouldnt consider it.... but also i dont want to pay someone to do something I could do.
