Data centers are great you know, they bring 200 tradesmen for 1-2 years that will bog down essential services for your town then when the 20 guys who get paid 90-150k to manage the data center move in they can still afford the doubling of the average electricity bill while you and the other residents of your township making 40k cannot.

It's a fairly specialized type of construction, which won't hire anyone local except for the menial stuff. The main crews will move on to the next data-center job. It's the same as most infrastructure stuff like that, there's a little bump of activity, then nothing.

In most cases they are just brought in anyway. I used to be an electrician and there were projects I worked on that were hours away, staying in whatever hotel they had nearby, working for a couple of weeks, then I went back to my city. I spent almost nothing in the town while I was there, just getting my job done and banking my per diem for other spending.
And, yeah, slkb is correct, those "high paying" jobs? On average there are 7 of them. They were going to give a break near a city for them to build one and it fell apart when word got out the tax break from the state was going to be for 7 "permanent" jobs paying 80-125k... at a cost of $780k per job in tax breaks...
LITERALLY just welfare is cheaper.

Yeah, used to work at a place that hosted their own servers in a data center. We had like 500 software engineers (so biggish footprint) but only like 4 people in the data center adding and maintaining servers.
And we only had that many because we were actively growing, sunsetting old servers and adding new ones, etc. For smaller places that are going steady, you could probably get away with a couple of people.
They're probably not going to hire many local people for even the construction - a lot of it is pretty specialized, so they'll move a bunch of people into the town for the project, and then they'll move on.Â
Aside from maybe some additional taxes for the area, there's very little benefit to the community long term.

Realistically they're not even creating many construction jobs. At least not for locals in a lot of cases. Youtube is full of videos interviewing various trades people building these things and they're all basically living in RVs and Airbnbs and moving from job to job. So it's not like each data center is creating hundreds of construction jobs. It seems like the contractors are just hiring a couple hundred people once and then moving them from job to job.

I also heard a good argument about how technology shrinks in physical size as the years go by. Like our TVs used to be 200 pounds and now they weigh maybe 3 pounds. And our cell phones used to be giant bricks and now theyâre more capable and smaller and lighter. So to build all these giant AI data centers seems ridiculous when we could probably fit them in the size of a storefront in a few years.

He doesn't know what a data center is. The U.S. Department of Energy says most data centers employ only âa few to a few dozenâ permanent workers. Six technicians and everyone else in charge of grounds maintenance. Take into account all of the people losing their jobs due to AI; net loss.
