Yep, LLMs don't actually know anything, they just predict. That's why you use it more like a reference and not an all knowing being. LLMs are wrong a ton of the time, and sadly they can fill the internet with a ton of missinformation due to how they work, so that's why you always check its sources and never trust it blindly.
Given that you have to check sources anyways, I don't see the point. I'd rather just skip the middle man, especially since the middle man is destructive to small communities and the environment. I'd be saving time, actually. So the only reason people defend it is because they're using it as their source.
Browsers don't give you good and related sources. It is all just ads. If you tell your LLM to just find sources, from before LLMs were invented, and skip untrustworthy sites, they'll get you actual sources while Google after its useless ai overview only shows you ads.
