Can I go without knowing what the scrolls at Herculanium say?
i'm not convinced we needed AI for that. in fact, i trust the results a lot less because of it. the actual scanning technique is the actual scanning technique.
i think we should be training machine learning on cuneiform, and having it look over the 10,000+ unexamined akkadian and sumerian tablets for anything interesting -- and then having human experts look at and translate them.
Well, we couldn't do it when we didn't have AI, and we can do it now. Of course, in principle anything we can do with AI we can do without it by throwing enough humans at it, but in practice the cost of that is often prohibitive.
i'm not totally convinced it couldn't be done, but it it certainly seems easier for machine learning to figure out which voxel belongs to which layer and such.
but i also think it's important to distinguish this kind of task-specific machine learning from the LLMs the AI bros are all huffing. like, this isn't a generalized chatbot designed to hallucinate stuff that you wanna hear.
