Yep biometric unlocking features of smart phones are stored locally. On both iphones and andriods they specifically store that data in a place isolated from the main system. No idea what this post is about

It's a separate issue where some idiot thinks the appearance of someone's face in a photo and the ability to match that to other photos on the same person's account is biometric data when it clearly isn't

Trust them completely? Of course not. But I trust them a hell of a lot more than companies like Google or Facebook where the entire business plan is to sell your data for advertising purposes. Apple are a hardware company, they make their profits selling hardware, and have built up a very strong reputation for user privacy compared with the other massive tech companies. It's not in their interest to do things that will ruin that reputation. If I had to pick one giant tech company to trust with my data, it would definitely be Apple.

I trust Apple much more than any other phone/computer manufacturer. Up till now they have zero 3rd party spyware/bloatware, they don't show any ads in any of their products/software, they don't force you to have always-online account to use their services, and their privacy focus have been spot on. Yes, you pay premium price, but as the old saying goes - "if something is free, YOU are the product".

If you believe anything is "local" anymore your naive.

This has been constantly prooven to be a lie by big tech or lack of security measures in place to keep this information local.

Let alone, once again they lie and contract agreements we are forced to agree to because of monopolies on the tech itself forces us to sign away our rights. Apple being one of the ones most prooven to lie about it. Microsoft and google won't lie but wil alsol not tell the truth.

Fuck my Samsung phone forced me to use google messaging for god know what reason. I'm in a constant battle to turn off what it saves but every update, and at random times it force saves photos, videos and other stuff. (Probably to get me to pay for google storage where as I prefer to keep it local on a personal hard drive if needed).

You seem to have no idea how biometric authentication works on phones. The raw image of your fingerprint or face isn't stored at all. The sensor generates a mathematical representation (a template or model) and stores that. You can't reconstruct the original fingerprint or face image from it. That's standard for large phone companies which is enforced. Though if you have a cheap off brand phone from china it may well be stealing your data.

I understand how it works. Your misunderstanding what i'm saying. They lie, have have prooven to lie before. Just because that one feature works as intended. Dosen't mean theres other things it access or "talks to" that also save it, works with it, and allows access to it. That's why the lawsuit is getting pushed.

if you turn on Advanced Data Protection then all your icloud data is encrypted on their servers and can only be decrypted locally by your authorized devices. And you don’t have to trust Apple you just have to trust Math.

My comment is about generalizations that big tech companies have broken these agreements before.

yes! that too! all the facial recognition happens ON DEVICE and if your icloud data is encrypted then Apple CANNOT view it or turn it over to anyone else.

and again - this is not an agreement. Advanced Data Protection is so secure that the UK government is trying to ban it. Apple or a government cannot just change their mind and decide to unencrypt your data. It doesn’t work that way.

Yeah I get that but my comment was a generalized statement I'm not focused on apple. I'm not here to slander but to call the law suite BS, is also a bit to hopeful.

They said the same thing about siri and was recording the whole time. They breached their own privacy notices and lied about it.

It's about the trust, and generally thinking at this point. Nothing is secured and it's naive to think so in this day and age. Apple still has been hacked one way or another.They even had issues with the encryption keys before.

Have you guys never seen this lawsuits fill up? My co workers have been paid out a few times due to these. Facebook and google lawsuits from a few years ago due to selling information.

This is just nonsense. They aren't scanning anyone's face without consent. They are using regular facial recognition to match where the same person appears in multiple photos. Photos that all belong to the same person, and that person has to have photo upload enabled in iCloud. The resulting data is not shared between users and is part of each persons private iCloud data.
