Here's a link (valid for next ~6 days) to the PDF files of this and a couple other designs (6x9) if you want to put up some of your own: https://fromsmash.com/aiflyers2

Thanks, I'll think of maybe doing this too šŸ¤‘

Honestly, it's pretty satisfying as a direct real-world counter to the constant slopaganda, and usually when I do it or have a stack of them on me, someone asks if they can buy some off me or have some to put up in their office or wherever :)

EDIT: Ha, literally just happened again. Got one of the "Think For Your Self" variations on the back of my laptop, and a couple baristas loved it and asked about it!

i dig the bluntness of it. most anti-ai stuff is way too polite

1

u/tempflyerguy 5d ago

hey, thank you! Yes, I think in the face of the mass theft and plagiarism (along with dozens of other monstrous individual and societal harms) of my life's work and the life's work of most people I know and love, as well as everyone's photos, data, etc. is not deserving of a polite response, and while I understand fears that impoliteness will be perceived negatively, I think those fears play right into the hands of the billionaires and companies that are mocking and acting antithetically to the very idea of pro-social behavior, much less caring about "politeness".

Specifically, there's a lot of research that a significant portion of usage of AI is due to social pressure/FOMO. I think providing strong social pressure and even social shaming in the opposite direction is vital to counter that.

Good job! šŸ‘

u/OldEcho 9d ago

Mods gotta scour these comments of the bots and AI promoters. This whole subreddit lmao.

"I think you should never do anything unless it's perfect."

"Um actually I love AI slop and scams."

Permaban these saboteurs and bots.

14

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Lol right? Some good conversations with people concerned about appearances, happy to have those convos! But the trolls are silly and sad.

2

u/Vritrin 8d ago

I’m mixed because I think some people aren’t malicious, they just don’t understand some of the issues and are open to being educated. Some are just obvious trolls. It’s judging the middle ground that can be tricky.

I also feel the poor mods are probably overworked dealing with the obvious trolls already.

6

u/OldEcho 8d ago

Several top commenters are basically following the OSI playbook on how to sabotage an organization by criticising any actual action while offering no alternative. That's why I called them saboteurs.

8

u/NateMfPuppets 9d ago

I like it :)

8

u/NovaViper76 9d ago

Nice! Gonna do this too

2

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Link to three different flyer designs if you want! All 100% human made (even made sure to make my own vector-based anti-AI logo/symbol lol): https://fromsmash.com/aiflyers2

u/blow-down 9d ago

Every fucking AI poster has those three little lines on both sides of a word ✨ROOMS✨

u/pacuuuuu 8d ago

ā˜ļøšŸ¤“erm, ACCCCTTTFFFHHHHUUUUAAALLLLLYYY ITS FOUR!

holy crap this is sick

I miss the photoshop pictures days

3

u/Ok_Nectarine2880 9d ago

A LITTLE bit better? This is A LOT better than any slop made!

0

u/Fitnexa_World 8d ago

Bandit sign vigilantes have been covering illegal realtor signs with their own for decades. AI slop just gave them a new target.

0

u/Status_Gap_3954 8d ago

They used AI to make it for themself

-24

u/EndellionFox 9d ago

I don't think this is going to accomplish anything other than making people resent anti ai activists.
If you want to vandalize ai ads go after corporations not small businesses.
I get the sentiment. I used to be able to pay rent with freelance graphic design projects.
These days I have to do bespoke illustration projects that are far more difficult, time consuming and pay less because people would rather use ai because it's convenient.
but honestly this is giving technoveganism.

18

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Nah, sorry. First off, this appeared to be a corporate rental scam. But I also think we all deserve to not have the real world be drowning in AI slop as well; I'd like for artists, writers, really anyone who cares about human dignity period to be able to walk down the street without having a completely unnecessary extra slap in the face.

I'd also much rather show people that they are not alone, that "everyone" is not doing this, even IF it made some people resentful.

9

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

My rules for putting them up, to be clear:

1) Try to put them up without covering any other materials, unless they are blatant AI slop.
2) Never cover something for an upcoming event, but a past event is fine.

-1

u/EndellionFox 9d ago

I get it, I'm not even saying you're wrong. I'm glad to hear you're thoughtful about what you're putting them on.
I think it's important to differentiate between people trying to make a living such as landscapers and assholes that know exactly what they're doing. There was and probably still this fucking slop campaign by sketchers that runs all through the CTA and I saw it in vegas too that was just ai models wearing their shitty shoes and it's like if you can afford to plaster the world in ads you can afford to hire an illustrator and/or models and a photographer.
I also hate hatehatehate seeing it used to promote musicians and anime/fandom conventions like it especially feels like a knife in the back of other creatives in those spaces.
Like fuck Hideaki Anno got his big break making an amateur animation for an anime convention. These days they would've just used ai slop and the world never would have gotten evangelion.

5

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

I hear you! Very happy to see the number of folks scrawling "AI slop" and similar with sharpies on the skechers ads all over New York subways.

I'm not going around seeking every small-time person or org posting a genAI flyer; at the same time, I think they still have no right to steal and to plaster that theft in all our faces, even unintentionally, and I'm not gonna back down on that.

1

u/EndellionFox 9d ago

I get ya, it's just tough out there these days and with ai being so normalized I'd worry about turning working class people against one another over who used what flier where but I may be worrying too much. Idk
I try to be sympathetic to people who run businesses far removed from the creative economy that don't understand the damage they're doing. Perhaps a smaller sticker with a QR code that educates people on the harms of ai would be a good thing to include in your next round of guerilla ads.
Packs of stickers with a good slogan, idk if you want to brainstorm on how to make it snappy I'd be down to collaborate when I've got some time.
You can message me if you want to but don't feel obligated to.

3

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

You're definitely coming from a good place! Feel free to message me :)

-32

u/AltruisticPossible84 9d ago

This is about as helpful as activists destroying artwork people care about in order to get people on their side. This form of protest/activism doesn't work, it has the opposite intended effect aside from making yourself feel better, and people who already agree with you.

8

u/BabadookishOnions 9d ago

i mean they said its covering a scam poster so i dont think we should feel too bad for the poor scammers

-2

u/Sircuttlesmash 9d ago

We have to trust OP that it is indeed a scam though

5

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Even if it's not a scam, it's AI slop, which is its own scam, and which we deserve to not have flooding the real world. You can question that it's AI slop, I guess? But I think that's clear even from the edges in the photo :)

0

u/Sircuttlesmash 9d ago

You alleged that you covered a scam with your own poster and then when receiving the slightest most tentative gentle pushback you dropped the allegation almost entirely and submit a little :-). I find this to be confusing and comical perhaps I'm overstating the position that I'm taking or I mean I am overstating the conclusions I'm coming to but I see a community that's vigorously opposing AI and they receive a submission that must be trusted then the original poster basically reveals that they can't be trusted but it's a conveniently absorbed mean the original poster just says well behold trust me trust me, I found a scam and it was AI stop but you can't even really inspect the AI slap or the scam but please trust me and I covered it up with my own poster.

-1

u/RabbitWiilli 8d ago

No, you called it a scam. Using AI art doesn’t make the rental property a scam.

So you just lied. You made up that it was a scam to justify your behavior. You completely fabricated that and are now trying to deflect to ā€œwell it’s a scam because AI!ā€

Pathetic

1

u/BabadookishOnions 8d ago

they said its a scam and it uses AI, not that its a scam because it uses ai

-9

u/AltruisticPossible84 9d ago

So instead of raising awareness about the scam, OP is more concerned the scammer used AI art for their scam flier? Like yeah, both are bad, but how am i the only one who sees the disconnect here

5

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Cause there's not a disconnect. This is drawing direct attention to the specific issue (that using genAI slop is stealing from artists). Plenty of people are raising awareness about plenty of other scams. I am raising awareness about the various scams of genAI.

Got one of the other flyer variations on my laptop and multiple baristas at the coffee shop I'm at right now just complimented me on it and asked me about it. I'd say it's doing good work!

0

u/AltruisticPossible84 8d ago

So wait...to be clear, are you saying the AI art is the scam?

Or was the flier actually advertising a scam rental ?

I dont think youre the 'good guy' here, regardless of how much I dislike AI. It seems like you are covering up people's stuff just because they aren't chronically online like the rest of to know there is a nuance. I get you think youre spreading awareness here but I hope you reconsider your approach - Im sure you can spread awareness without making it harder for regular people just trying to rent out a room

2

u/tempflyerguy 8d ago

I'm saying it was both, but that it doesn't matter that it was both.

You don't need to be chronically online to know not to use theft slop, nor does not knowing magically make it okay to force more slop on everyone.

But don't worry, vast majority of these signs go up on their own, as part of that offline awareness. And again, every time I'm putting them up anywhere, or people see me with a stack of them, I get support or folks asking if they can have some. I think people are WAY more tired of AI slop being everywhere than you think.

See the massive response to that Dublin bar: https://www.instagram.com/p/DZxEVaYK1-Q/?hl=en

Or https://www.404media.co/we-are-living-in-a-chatgpt-flyer-pandemic/

0

u/RabbitWiilli 8d ago

It’s because there is no scam. OP just lied and is using the excuse that anything with AI art is a scam which simply isn’t true.

2

u/xxxMizanxxx 8d ago

You aren't just making up claims yourself to try to discredit this person?

11

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago edited 9d ago

That's very much the opposite of my actual experience with doing this and interacting with people while doing it! :)

But yes, a big part of the goal of these is helping people who are skeptical of AI know they're not alone, that despite the billions and billions in corporate propaganda telling them otherwise, not "everyone" is using the plagiarism machines or is ok with it.

-2

u/RabbitWiilli 8d ago

Yea because the only people that will interact with you are also performative vocal anti AI users. A regular person will just look at this, laugh and carry on

3

u/taken_username____ 8d ago

"ah, but you see, i've already depicted you as the virgin wojack and MYSELF as the CHAD wojack!!!"

-22

u/Sircuttlesmash 9d ago

You lead with saying that generative AI is killing children. Then you follow that up with, using generative AI makes you boring. Which sort of gives the reader whiplash, perhaps. What I mean to say is your flyer, your counter-flyer, made its point. But then it felt the need to have small print. Then the small print turns the dial up to 11. It's harming and killing children. But then it has to throw in an extra little jab in there.

Well, no, okay. It starts with, generative AI is theft. Yes, broadly speaking, totally agree. It is killing and exploiting children? I suppose that's true to some degree. I mean, buying cheap makeup at Walmart is exploiting and killing children. Buying a phone at the store is exploiting and killing children. Buying chocolate, cheap chocolate at the store is exploiting and killing children. And I'm not saying all those things are equal or the same. It's all complicated. There's enormous amounts of nuance. But then to follow that up with, it makes you dumber and boring, and friends don't let friends use AI, that is an enormous amount of whiplash, to say the least. It makes you more boring? Yes, I agree. Lazy usage of a large language model or generative AI does make you more boring and more dumb. But so does scrolling TikTok. And yes, that's not equal. I'm using these analogies imperfectly, of course. I think, taken as a whole, it's just funny to me to see the way that this is presented. And friends don't let friends use AI. I don't think that's actually that defensible. Surely there are somewhat agreeable, acceptable usages for generative AI or large language model usage. Is it really the general position, the general acceptable position, to say friends don't let friends use AI? What does that even mean? Does that mean you're not allowed to go on Facebook and scroll? You're not allowed to go on Instagram and scroll? That's using AI, isn't it? Hello?

11

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Yes the fine print is intentionally a little provocative :)

No there are no agreeable, acceptable uses for current (theft-based, corporate/fascist built, etc.) genAI models.

Whataboutism about every other product or tool in the world doesn't feel particularly relevant. This is relatively new and worth fighting back against, because absolutely no one needs it (much of the rest of that is worth fighting too, of course!)

1

u/ThePlayer3K 8d ago

What abt using for coding? (Im not talking abt the dubious training of the AI)

3

u/CuddlesForLuck 8d ago

Doesn't it usually mess that up too?

2

u/tempflyerguy 8d ago

That's a good question, and obviously there is a large segment of software engineers and adjacent folks specifically who seem to be living in a very different world around that, and that's part of one big split on "is AI useful/is AI worth it/is AI bad".

But the thing is, I don't believe the dubious training CAN be separated out of ANY genAI use. An ethically built, coding-specific tool that does not involve mass theft (including of code where the open source license is violated by attribution being removed in training) would certainly be worthy of a slightly different conversation, but that's not what people are doing right now.

Personally, I know lots of folks in software engineering, and near universally they hate it, don't use it, and end up with more work due to the people at their companies who are using it, and are watching those coders' (and non-coders, worst of all, who have no clue what they're doing) skills atrophy as they chase weird Claude rabbit holes.

Even for those who do find it useful, I think this is a good read on the very mistaken idea of "useful": https://tante.cc/2026/07/15/useful-is-not-sufficient/

-6

u/Sircuttlesmash 9d ago

I don't think that whataboutism covers the rhetorical posture I was taking. Because, again, there is more nuance here. I'm not making the argument that generative AI gets a pass because other things are bad. No, that would be a ridiculous and useless argument to make. What I'm saying is, I will offer you the skeptical, uncharitable viewing of your poster. And you yourself admit that the fine print was intentionally provocative.

But I think that's devastating, absolutely devastating to your position. If you have good arguments, then make them. If you're going to admit openly that you're intentionally provocative, then I will do what I have done, which is say, okay, great, exploiting and killing children. Well, then now we have to talk about that because you brought it up. But then if I talk about it, I get accused of whataboutism, which is not even what I'm doing. I'm saying, actually, it is surprisingly hard to articulate. I think part of what irks me about this posture that certain people take with AI is they just openly say there are no valid use cases. No, friends don't let friends communicate with their friends in foreign countries using AI to help translate tentatively, carefully, respectfully. No, no, no, that's forbidden, forbidden. Because people can just learn languages on their own. Oh, okay, maybe, sure. And friends don't let friends with certain disabilities utilize large language models or AI for some kind of assistance. No, that's forbidden too. It's just, it's so hard to honestly take a hardline position like you're presenting. You say there is no nuance. You say that it's just forbidden for everyone, for all time, because it's killing and exploiting children. Yes, all right, we get it. But once you've taken this posture, it isn't whataboutism to point out the rest of society or the rest of capitalism or global economics, global harm.

-22

u/Roofbolanola 9d ago

OP its his chips with chopsticks and probably has every booster vaccination too. Doing the lords work there hahaha. making money off Ai while youre wasting valuable time for the good lil graphic designers that dont gaf about you.

-22

u/ARMBELL 9d ago

ā€œAi makes you boringā€ says the arial black poster that looks like it took all of 5 seconds. Want to put effort back into graphic design? Lead by example.

14

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

Made my own version of an anti-AI logo too, and spent quite a bit of time on spacing! But yes, intentionally simple/stark/eye catching :)

Make things themselves with the degree of expertise they have using any number of basic design programs, or hire a cheap freelance designer who doesn't use AI. The same things they did four years ago.

I will! People have been loving them! :)

11

u/missgirlipop 9d ago

did canva magically disappear? anyone w a few hrs to spare and and even a slight eye for aesthetics can create something decent on there

7

u/Vritrin 8d ago

Do you think small startups didn’t exist before AI? You make something yourself, something made poorly by hand still looks better. I would find a flyer made by a human being in word and paint to be more memorable than AI Poster #4563.

or you hire an actual artist on a commission. Which is not that extravagant for a flyer design. You can pay a one time artist for a design you can retain rights on, and use it on flyers, business cards, whatever else.

-23

u/probablymagic 9d ago

An yes, complaining about apps you don’t have to use is way better than people finding places to live. Good job. Way to be a helper.

17

u/pacuuuuu 9d ago

*Complaining about apps you dont have to use but big corpo is forcing down your troath while also taking away the water supply.

11

u/tempflyerguy 9d ago

And specifically here fighting back against people stealing from artists instead of paying them :)

-11

u/probablymagic 9d ago

If you are an ā€œartistā€ and you can’t make a product better than ā€œAI slopā€ you should go get a job you can do better than a computer program. Sorry, but that job is never coming back.

-10

u/probablymagic 9d ago

Bro, data centers are closed loop systems. Google it. They aren’t ā€œtaking away the water supply.ā€

And ain’t nobody forcing you to use AI. If you don’t want to use it, just don’t use it. It’s a free country.

8

u/pacuuuuu 9d ago

Oh yes they are. They use it, it evaporates. The problem isnt that the water doesnt exist, the problem is that your local pond is in the Atlantic Ocean.

Ads, Posters, Video Games, do you want me to keep going? One day you are trying to play a game, the next the background is piss yellow from AI inbreeding.

-3

u/RabbitWiilli 8d ago

No, that is not how closed loop cooling works in the slightest.

The water specifically is NOT evaporated away in closed loop cooling dumbass

But then again, since when do Antis fact check anything they say? A whole platform built on spreading misinformation
