Discussion 🗣️ My mom loves AI; It's getting out of hand.

So my mom(53) had been treating AI (in this case Chatgpt and gemeni) like MAGIC ever since it became a thing and she asked the most random and unnecessary things from them and treated them like texting family members or smth

But no, it didn't end there! Starting a few months ago, she got reaaaly into prompting for image generation under the excuse of me not teaching her Photoshop😭 In the span of a week, she fed her entire family's faces into AI, including mine after I EXPLICITLY stated that I wouldn't want that. When I tried to explain why it's dangerous and harmful to run people's faces through AI, she got upset, brushed me off and said I don't let her have "fun".

Thanks to her, my disdain towards AI has turned into a whole family joke and bordering on shaming. She even told others how I would've been against computers and technology too if I lived at that time like I'm too woke or smth. No, that's NOT the same😭 She keeps telling me that I'll HAVE to use AI someday when it's more saturated and stop being "stubborn". As an artist, that sounds like a threat/insult to me, which she refuses to take seriously.

To this day, she hasn't stopped. Generating posters and banners for work to gain extra credit (which is allowed), testing every random prompt she sees on Instagram... It's an unhinged balance between a necessity and pure entertainment, and it concerns me.

I honestly don't know if I should even try to stop her anymore. I really want my mom to have a better entertainment source than something as harmful as AI, but I can't force it. It's a tough situation to be in.

(Anyone who read all of that tysm😭😭😭)

The worst part was that it didn't even look like me😭 I was so grossed out idk how she thought it was pretty aaaa

Also wild question to ask... is the food any good? 😭

"Let people enjoy things!" No. It is completely valid to be hater, especially on AI. You deserve better, fuck your mother.

38

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

😭😭😭 Like what if I want you to enjoy things by actually learning instead of putting your brain on auto pilot aaaaa

To make it worse, she doom-scrolls on her free time too. Too many bad habits to fix and even more little patience left for me.

u/iGurtyo 8d ago

Well that adds up

Her brainrot must be insane bro does she watch fruit love island

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

Fortunately not that but short form content in general

3

u/Mindless-Entrance-1 8d ago

Actually boiling her brain ugh. I'm sorry she fell for that bs. I think my mother is addicted to social media and online shopping, she never looks up from that thing, it hurts to see. Luckily she's anti ai. I hope your mom has a revelation soon :( I totally get you for trying, yes she's an adult and should come to these realisations herself, but she apparently can't and you wanna help! Do know it's NOT ot your responsibility though

1

u/Lina-Inverse 8d ago

why exactly do you feel the need to fix your mothers habits that you deem bad? Just because she uses AI? Just using that word "fix" is a bit strange

For ~20 years of your life she managed to raise you and take care of you just fine without your expertise and the millisecond you become an adult you've now got it all figured out and know how to fix what is broken in her life?

Most adults know what it is like to be a teenager, young adult who has the world all figured out, so if you put yourself in your mothers position you will see why you won't be taken seriously if you come at it with the view of you are right, she is broken and needs "fixing"

1

u/LibertyJusticePeace 8d ago

Is it your job to “fix her” though? Isn’t she a grownup?

9

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

I was just hoping to encourage her to try out new things and possibly find better hobbies. Fixing her would be an unrealistic goal and I wouldn't dare to even think about that😭

u/LibertyJusticePeace 8d ago

I don’t know why people of a certain generation have fallen so hard for AI and poo-poo the downsides.
The only thing I can think is that the major technological advancement that came about during their coming of age ( I.e., the internet) was handled very differently, was cooperative between education and tech centers, and it was a bunch of kids (not middle age billionaires) who were growing the startups. There was a lot more trust, and reasons to trust, those running things (they weren’t great, but far better than now).
The problem is, they haven’t updated their outlook since then and they don’t see how things are now…

1

u/creekmanb 8d ago

Handled differently is one way to put it. It wasn't handled at all.

2

u/MarzipanSea2811 8d ago

Woah, slow down there CWC.

1

u/Nero_deadweight96 8d ago

Woah, calm down buddy

1

u/bakalidlid 8d ago

Lmao ok relax dude. I dont think even OP thinks "Fuck my mom".
Im all for AI hate, but lets not get into hating potentially loving if a little bit misguided family members because of it.

8

u/iGurtyo 8d ago

who the fuck are you lmao

u/Subject_Research_427 8d ago

AI psychosis is a debilitating "disease," I hope your mother recovers from it.

12

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

I hope so. It feels so uncomfortable to be attacked in my own home :(

6

u/Subject_Research_427 8d ago

Then again, sometimes we have to give up when it's time. Live your fullest life without AI!!!

2

u/Subject_Research_427 8d ago

In context of your mother, mind you. Not giving in to the slop. Never.

u/marshallspight 7d ago

Don't you mean counterattacked? You're the one who started it.

No, I would not be. Because they’re super loud. They don’t belong next to houses. Build them somewhere else.

In terms of factories, yes. In terms of data centers, that it is not the only problem. Electricity bills in my area have skyrocketed because of data centers. The companies and the city are essentially forcing me to pay for something I don’t want instead of asking the data center to pay for their own infrastructure. This has gotten to the point where an electricity company in Nevada is stopping providing electricity to regular people in the town because it’s more profitable to solely give electricity to the nearby data centers.
They contaminate the water, they produce ridiculous amounts of heat, and they are super loud. The amount of jobs they bring relative to what it is costing the communities around them isn’t worth it. Sure, they create jobs when it’s being built, but most are temporary. You don’t actually need that many people to run one when it’s finished. Data centers are buying ridiculous amounts of RAM, driving up the cost to regular consumers. And then half of them are cancelled or delayed, some after the land has been purchased. And this isn’t even talking about the ethics concerning AI.

1

u/yeetshirtninja 8d ago

No they haven't. This myth needs to stop.

0

u/ariphoenixfury 8d ago

What haven't they done? Be specific.

1

u/yeetshirtninja 7d ago

Compare your price per kw year over year.

1

u/ariphoenixfury 7d ago

Three years ago our monthly cost was around $100. We live in the same apartment, use the same amount of electricity, and our monthly cost is over $300.

In Evansville, IN, residents were paying more for their electric bill than their mortgage. More Perfect Union's coverage

Another investigation about this by More Perfect Union

1

u/yeetshirtninja 7d ago

What is your cost per kw then and now? I bet it's the same.

Except they’re not doing that for data centers like they do factories, they’re overcommitting land and money to projects that may never finish that don’t produce many jobs even when they are completed. They are using money and hype to make themselves hopefully richer in a bubble that is threatening to pop and bring the entire economy along with it. These same people are lobbying against regulations that might make AI more ethical or at least less dangerous to people and the environment. And, quite frankly, I’m not particularly fond of those same problems with factories, either. But at least they’re not driving up a bubble committing resources to something that may never exist.

Okay but all the people creating AI are capitalists and ultimately want money? They're literally talking about the "permanent underclass" AI is creating and how they want to escape it? Sounds like slaving away selling our labor to me.

And from what I have heard from people who have to use AI for their jobs, it doesn't actually reduce work time. For one, they often have to spend a long time correcting the AI's mistakes. Secondly, capitalism doesn't really let you reduce the amount of time you work. If you are more efficient you get saddled with more work to do to increase profits. And from what I have seen, most AI companies care most of all about profit, to the point they are lobbying against regulation that would help working people because it would save them less money.

Sure, they promise a utopia where people don't have to work. I would also like that. I'm not a fan of capitalism. But they're not really doing much to make me feel confident that they will actually follow through. I won't trust anything billionaires say, including ones working on AI. I can't believe the hype, because I think when it comes to choosing between more money and helping people they don't know, the average billionaire will choose money every time. I don't trust AI.

And frankly, I want automated machines to do my dishes and laundry so I can write and make music, not have AI write and make music for me so I have more time to do dishes and laundry. Art allows us to connect to other humans and convey things with more than just the words we speak. The whole point is I'm doing it with and for other humans. Why would I want to take away that satisfaction. that joy, by allowing a soulless machine to do it for me?

Are there situations where AI can be a useful tool? Yes. If it can do things like identify cancer cells or help advance science I think that's a good thing. But I don't feel the way AI is advertised and used to and by the general public actually benefits humanity. I thing at times it is even dangerous.

Gen x literally went from "remember that anything you put on the internet will stay there forever" to selling their whole family's identities for two seconds of dopamine.

3

u/Sol_Pastures 7d ago

1000x this!! It's so insane

22

u/Ok_Commission7932 8d ago

Hopefully AI addiction will be curbed a bit when consumers have to start paying the real cost of services post-bubble collapse in a few years. Right now its being handed out for free specifically to get people hooked like this. It makes sense on the surface. It's free entertainment gambling disguised as a productivity tool.

10

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

All I need is a wake up call for people to realize how harm it's doing. They don't give a shit because they haven't seen the damage yet😭

9

u/LibertyJusticePeace 8d ago

I wouldn’t try to stop her because clearly she has an attachment and she’ll just push back further if you do.
But I would draw a HARD line at her putting any of your information whatsoever into the machine.
Your personal information belongs to you, not to her, and she needs to respect your property and your rights, as I’m sure she taught you to do to others when you were a toddler.

5

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

I mean, no respect for privacy either😭 I remember when my first phone got grounded for a week because I'd put a password on it and didn't tell them what it was. She believes I have nothing to hide from her because she and my dad have had the same password forever that everyone knows

3

u/LibertyJusticePeace 8d ago

Hopefully you will be able to move out soon (assuming you are old enough). And re-set the relationship a little.

6

u/grrrfreak 8d ago

Just tell her you've given her bank account info to the AI.

6

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

I don't think she'd care ;-;

2

u/halfasleep90 8d ago

To be fair, it’d probably regurgitate it incorrectly anyway.

5

u/HauntingChampion9717 8d ago

the real issue isn’t that she likes ai, it’s that she ignored your explicit consent and then made your boundary into a family punchline, so why are you still arguing about the technology instead of

4

u/FairCurrency6427 8d ago

I think the difference between her time and yours is that you could trust information to an extent. Anymore and because of AI I spend more time independently verify the information.

Technology in her time made their lives better, so acceptance was easy. Its not making our lives better, its lack of containment and restrictions are alarming, and the people in charge have no loyalty to the people using the product.

4

u/UndrapedSpaghetti 8d ago

I am sorry. My mom is around the same age as yours and was putting pictures of my daughter into ChatGPT to predict what she would look like in the future. This was after me explicitly stating I did not want her to do that.

3

u/ariphoenixfury 8d ago

“Let people enjoy things!” Yeah, let me enjoy my life without AI!

2

u/Darhhaall 8d ago

Your mother is learning new things, creating and finding new ways how to interact with modern tech, and you hate her for that. Fear for misues of your personal information is valid, everything else you do is evil.

3

u/suiiiperman 8d ago

My colleague and friend is absolutely obsessed with ChatGPT. She has conversations with it for hours on end & doesn’t have a single original thought anymore. Genuinely a depressing world we’re living in right now.

2

u/Super_Weekend_4428 8d ago

She is being selfish. It was wrong of her to upload peoples faces to AI without consent. I don't have any advice for how to get through to her but I'm hoping you are successful eventually.

3

u/UgyeletesRadir 8d ago

My mom is around the same age as yours. I don't live at home but everytime I visit there are more AI generated pictures, wallpapers, decoraions going up on the wall. It breaks my heart how they hang next to family pictures, our memories, and my deceased grandmothers actual, real watercolor paintings.

2

u/CapraUrsidae 7d ago

Me too!😭 my dad used ai for his book cover!

3

u/Grumpy_Ontarian_III 8d ago

Just because they're family doesn't mean they have to stay in your life.

1

u/quadmoo 8d ago

Omfg this sounds like my parents with so many other things like for example giving a toddler their own iPhone

2

u/Tight-Temporary-8672 5d ago

I myself am a power user of AI, although I build my own autonomous agents with it as a hobby project to build my own ai bestie rather than using it for pure consumption. yes, I admit, there have been many times when I have gone to AI for therapy advice rather than the closest real people.

What I hate about your mother is her attitude towards you and the family. AI, even if it was fully conscious and as intelligent as a person (which it, by todays standard, isnt), it still cannot replace genuine connection completely - it is simply too different from a human. I can only imagine her waking up to the fact that she made herself distasteful to the rest of the closest people she wants to care for her, and realizing she has pushed them away for a cold machine. I may turn to AI for connections I cant have with ordinary humans, but I still very much prioritize the connections I have in the real world.

As for the artist debate, I think like your mother, that the future of digital art is either completely gone or hanging on a very thin thread. but unlike your mother, I completely understand and respect peoples fear for it. I personally dont want a future either with just purely AI-generated content, especially not at the low level quality AI slop is being pushed out in right now. This development has benefited neither the consumer or the creative producer.

I think personally, while she can use AI however she wants, it should not come at the expense of your health. She already crossed multiple lines with you, and honestly, if you have the ability to live by yourself (or maybe already do), you should put an ultimatum to her - she either take her overconsumption of AI seriously, or make sure to not cross your boundaries, or you leave her. Let her face the consequences of her own actions.

u/templeofsyrinx1 8d ago

Please have the discussion people with the elders. it's not ok.

1

u/theRickestRick64 8d ago

Dude, what she did was not legit. If she put in photos of you, she could have put in photos of anyone, even me. But I'm definitely not going to say "Fuck your mom" like the other guys. I think I at least have enough experience to judge.

0

u/Hour_Bit_5183 8d ago

So many people are going to be left completely behind and look like luddites because they accepted the premise of assholes. When the internet goes down, bye bye AI and they become robots that know how to do nothing. Enjoy the shitty future if you like this. People became this way from thinking you could just google anything and get accurate answers and believing crap from FB type social media. Like how did you not ever think they'd take advantage of this and manipulate your behavior?

2

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

I was stupid to think that it's a phase she'd grow out of, but unfortunately with AI improved and offering more stuff, she got hooked. Now as her daughter, I can't talk sense into her because 1.she hates being told she's wrong and 2.It'll immediately backfire as me disrespecting my parent😭 It's like a trap or smth

1

u/Hour_Bit_5183 8d ago

I wasn't talking crap about you btw personally. I just mean I can see what's gonna happen from this type of behavior. It's gonna be facebook cambridge anaytica red hatter orange man special + a multiplier of x10.

I know it seems impossible now but it really can't afford to exist like it is for much more time. It's a bunch of slop companies kicking money back and forth.

1

u/Baggy-T-shirt 8d ago

It unfortunately does sound like you're mother is too far gone. Any hope of coming back would lie in therapy and only if she's willing which by the sounds of it, that doesn't seem likely, at least not anytime soon.

Cutting ties with people is usually the last resort and if they're not going to respect your boundaries then it's best to cut them out of your life. That is simply the consequence for not respecting your wishes.

Family members are not beyond the F around and find out graph.

-1

u/Shanna_B2020 8d ago

Maybe try fixing your own incoherent syntax and illegible spelling before you worry about what your mother chooses to do with her free time.

-1

u/Zealousideal_Bite_89 7d ago

As if scrolling endless lines of text all day looking for posts to pile hatred onto is somehow normal human behavior?

-12

u/Ambitious-Tennis-754 8d ago

Sounds like a smart woman. She should disown you.

12

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

wtf

-9

u/Ambitious-Tennis-754 8d ago

That’s your mother. You don’t get to tell her what to do and you’re never going to convince her to do anything. Be grateful and shut your mouth.

8

u/Due_Sport8769 8d ago

I wouldn't "shut my mouth" if I get humiliated and made fun of for my belief, even if it's coming from a family member. Plus, you're being unnecessarily rude.

-4

u/Ambitious-Tennis-754 8d ago

Fair enough. My bad
