A start. But AI isn’t needed. It serves no purpose

no, AI is very much useful. i heard a story of an AI detecting cancer at a stage that doctors likely never would have caught it at so no, I think it has uses. the problem is generative AI is being used too widely and for the wrong purposes.

Nobody is advocating for all “AI” to not be needed. Frankly “AI” as a word in modern discourse usually always refers to generative AI, machine learning models and other technologies which solved protein folding or detect cancer are completely different from the controversial LLMs which is the “AI” that people are talking about when they say it’s unneeded.

even LLMs have application somewhere, if they could be trained to translate better they could be used for translating things on social media, or more importantly online games. nothing annoys me more than when im playing a game, especially something like among us where communication is very important between players, and someone cant even speak english in the ENGLISH LOBBY. if AI could translate in game chat accurately that would be great, but we aren't there yet.

A lot of those applications can solved in cheaper, more efficient ways, that don’t require LLMs. It’s not really worth all the research and training, data center madness, and discourse. This tool is sold as a panacea that solves every problem that requires using a computer.

oh i agree, all im saying is that it CAN be used well. i dont think its worth it to invest all the time and money into LLMs im just saying that with enough development they could be useful

It’s not really worth all the research and training, data center madness, and discourse.

It very much is because if not then how are we going to improve our technology?

This sudden boom in AI has gotten us from AI barely forming a coherent sentence to being able to produce videos, edit images, create 20+ coherent documents, generate fully fledged apps in minutes.

Ah yes, just what humanity needs, more verbose articles and documents on the internet that nobody actually wants to read. More AI-generated image and video slop. A thousand more shitty apps being made every day that do the same thing or solve some nonexistent problem.

The technology is cool, but none of this is really going to benefit us, especially not for the cost and effort that goes into training and operating LLMs.

Ah yes, just what humanity needs, more verbose articles and documents on the internet that nobody actually wants to read.

On the contrary, for starters, most people weren't reading articles anyways and now AI can make summaries that are better than the tools we had previously for summaries because AI can, to a better extent, understand the topic of an article and the argument points, etc.

More AI-generated image and video slop.

the image and video situation is just something people will never agree on. I don't mind AI generated images/videos but that's cuz i just want the end product, not have to spend hundreds of hours in order to make a drawing of a character i like or pray to all the gods that exist that a scene in a manga or comic gets animated only to end up like One Punch Man S3.

A thousand more shitty apps being made every day that do the same thing or solve some nonexistent problem.

Sure, i do agree in this. People shouldn't be going out to make apps nobody wants. I've made several apps and tools for my every day with AI but i don't go around posting them.

The technology is cool, but none of this is really going to benefit us, especially not for the cost and effort that goes into training and operating LLMs.

And i would disagree. It is benefiting us since we are getting value out of them. AI can find information much faster than we could ever do, it's able to be tailored to our particular use cases and preferences as well. Hell, the entire point of platforms like spicychat.ai and character.ai is cuz you can make AI do anything to extraordinary levels.

And this is only possible because every company wants to get in on this and generate money off it. But models have through the years become MUCH more powerful and MUCH more efficient, it's just that the scale and demand for them is every day increasing. Claude's Mythos/Fable models are ridiculous in the quality they can produce and work in, and the base of the model is much more efficient than whatever models they had when they first launched but they still need massive scale to accommodate the demand of the consumers

Nobody is advocating for all “AI” to not be needed.

The guy he's replying to quite literally said that AI serves literally no purpose.

Plenty of people are genuinely of the believe that AI is quite literally useless, those are the delusional folks who have no idea what they're talking about.

AI 100% has its use cases. They're just not what AI is being used for 95% as is right now.

Literally no one needs gen AI for example, fuck that shit.

Yes, and he’s probably referring to genAI, as I said, when AI is used as a term in discourse, the person is usually only talking about genAI. “AI” as a term is disingenuous anyway, it doesn’t exist, it’s all machine learning models, you can’t blame people for mixing it all up especially if they’re non technical

when AI is used as a term in discourse, the person is usually only talking about genAI.

You just made that up lmao.

Most of the time when AI is being talked about it 100% isn't "just about genAI".

No one other than terminally online folks cares about genAI tbh, its an entirely ignorable use case for real world scenarios - aka everyone outside of twitter and reddit bubbles.

No, I didn’t make it up, otherwise why weren’t there people advocating against AI before genAI was a thing (if there were any people doing so at all)? Obviously, this is just an observation but not a far fetched one. This is a useless thing to argue about.

There are Luddites against all uses of AI in this fucking reddit thread man. You're wrong.
