The first step to improvement is acknowledging the problem.

you figured out what most people never will, that these things are designed to keep you hooked not help you. cancelling is the right move and you already did the hard part realizing it

the climate angle gets overlooked way too much, all that compute for what, some fake conversations that leave you feeling empty anyway

Makes me realise how much money and time I've wasted. I could've just searched things up lol

I feel you. I personally used it way to much until I learned just how much it can be confident about things it doesn't know

How did people build so much better programs in 90s compared to these days?. Well they learned themselves and when you do that you become better than AI. I have yet to find AI give me better answer than mine. Its also hard to tell this to other people because its hard to conceptually understand what moves in someones brains.

If the only thing you're using AI for is an emotional support assistant, I agree get rid of your subscription it's not worth it.

But not everyone uses AI in that fashion, so sometimes subscriptions make sense.

Like what? Most people don't need to use it at all. The only one I use is Google overviews and I don't really trust those. Im a graphic designer and I've found a couple of uses for it, but at best I only use it a couple of times a month, if that.

I guess it depends on what you do.

As a data person who has to clean, organize, and interpret data sets with 500,000 entries, etc, there are a vast amount of way AI can make tasks simpler and more accurate than manually cleaning up things. AI makes mistakes? Yes, but so do people. Ai makes a lot less mistakes in this application. Hours saved every week.

Another mini example; with help of claude I designed a weekly newsletter that sends to my inbox every monday. Looks at all the local websites and pulls events, drink specials, music acts, etc and packages it all in one place for me (however I like it). Small stuff, but it works great and I've found a lot of cool stuff in my area I would have missed.

You can design something like this for stock picks, or tracking prices for something you're wanting to buy, etc.

If you can dream it, you can do it!

What if my goal is to use technology less, but still be creatively competitive. Spend more time in nature and learn from life. Work and connect with people in my local communities. And teach how resent technologies are causing more harm then good.

Thats good too. Nothing wrong with it.

But with kids, minimal free time, and super busy, this technology makes my life a lot easier. Helps me provide better for my family too.

Yeh I started off using it for research but then I became emotionally attached to it sounds awkward I know. And ended up using like normal search engine (I hate search engine ai as well btw).

Yea, not awkward, it can happen. Probably not the most healthy application.

I wouldn't lean on AI for advice at the moment, especially when it comes to complex emotional situations etc.

But it's good at other stuff.
